~~~"~ over the intervening 45 years the story of racing machines has been one of the great improvements in science and technology but also one of ingenuity, determination, hard work, and ohen great bravery. Machines which have raced at South Dakota range from the humble "Norman Nippy" 50 CCtwo-stroke moped of the late '50s to the lire-breathing 3 litre Porsche 911 olthe Puerto Rican .team in 1974, to the 5 litre "Beast", built in Guyana and driven in anger by Eric Vieira to tWo successive victories in 1970 and 1971. There have been many examples of ingenuity. The meticulous engine building by Johnny Tyrell, his constant search for newer and faster parts, his meticulous attention to detail (and his brilliant riding) made him a constant champion in the '50s and early 60's. Johnny used to build his Honda 250 motorcyde engines upstairs in his house on the proverbial kitchen table, where everything was of operating room cleanliness. The Seibs brothers set a standard for high engineering and preparation with their ParkSpeed Minis in the early 70's, to such an extent that the cars came to the circuit in resplendent white, won their races and went bock home on the trailer without any repairs or rebuilds being necessary. Terry Angoy who drove the ParkSpeed Minis was equally brilliant and meticulous. Philip DeFreitas built his Central Garage Viva to the highest standards of the day, using Tecolemit-Jackson fuel injection and revving the Vauxhall 2 litre engine to 9,000 rpm where it produced better than 200 BHP. Butthe absolute king of high¡tech and high intelligence was undoubtedly Sam Cyrus who was behind every important victory, local and foreign in the 1970s and early '80s. Once, when the English team could not get their Escort (which had just token the British Saloon Car Championship) 10 run well at South Dakota, Sam insisted on putting a different grade of Spark Plug into every cylinder. This was an unheordof piece of effrontery. Butthe Escort went out on full song, making
175 Middle Street, Georgetown Tel. 68462 Experience the best of Caribbean cuisine in a breezy,
&1toett beautiful music, and won its race. When the bewildered English mechanics asked Sam why he had done such an unusual thing he said, "Eh,Eh, you don't wake up feeling the some way every morning, so why should every cylinder use the same plug when he ain't feeling the same way?" Behind the casual banter lay the best engineering mind that Motor Racing has seen in Guyana. Sam knew engines, suspensions and tyres, and before that he was one of the mast feared saloon car drivers, racing the Vauxhall VX490 on two wheels through the Gooseneck. The decades of the 80's and '90s have seen the arrival of high-teth, the spectacularly loud and fast Mazda Rotaries of Ray Rahaman and Andrew King, the screaming custom-built reciprocating engine of Jad Rahaman's Escort, and the unbelievable power of the 750 motorcycles. High-technology has taken the rev limit of For¡mula One engines from 11,000 rpm to 17,000 rpm, while the biggest story of all, tyre technology, has made the impassible possible. It is said that you cannot lose a 750 motorcycle unless you are lliilll' putting the power to it in a turn. Ifyou are running out of road just lean it down lower! If the technology and engineering have improved by leaps and bounds, skills and bravery have always been a part of South Dakota. Forty five years ago, Roy Chabrol, racing a BSA Gold Star at high speedon the long circuit won his race with one leg stretched out behind him on the saddle, having broken his foot-rest in a fall earlier in the race; and the sight of Andrew King or one of the Rahaman brothers approaching the Clubhouse Bend like a guided missile, the car shuddering and protesting, wisps of blue smoke from the brakes and tyres, reflexes and nerves tested to the limit, will always inspire awe and admiration for decades to come. TRIBUTE TO Alfred Chen came out on the motor racing scene in the early seventies at Vernam Field and raced competitively under the auspices of the Jamaica Motor Racing Association, an organisation that was founded by his friend, Hilary Jardine. He was the first Jamaican to have brought into this country a fully modified Tube Frame Ford Escort that caughtthe full attention ofthe Vernam Field patrons. At that venue, he raced several times and successfully against greats such as Billy Blackledge, the late Cornel D'Oyen, Peter and Paul Moodie, Leslie Ashman, Neil Gore, George Sherwood, David Kerr and Richard Machado, to name a few, as well as many racers from overseas. . After the demise of circuit racing at Vernam Field in 1980, he wanting to continue his racing career, single handedly and at the controls of his bulldozer built the Dover Raceway Track. He together with Patty Wong, Junior Lincoln and Richard "Dickie" Crawford established the Motor Sports Jamaica Limited and in December 1989 on a newly paved 1.6 mile track, held the first circuit race meet that experienced the largest crowd ever to attend Dover Raceway. Since then, Dover Raceway has been providing and continues to provide excitement and entertainment for thousands of Jamaicans thanks to his philanthropy and love for motor racing. Alfred also raced at his backyard track, the famous Dover Raceway, and was a force to be reckoned with as can be testified by David Summerbell Jnr., Peter Rae, Chris Issa, Peter "Bull" Thompson, Steve Sirgany and his close friend Gerald Rhoden among others. He brought lots of exotic racing cars to the island that raised the eyebrows of many and lifted the standards of racing not only in Jamaica, but also in the Caribbean. It was Alfred Chen and Hilary Jardine who revived the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship Series, thus enabling David Summerbell Jnr. to be crowned the Caribbean Champion and Jamaica the Champion Country in 1998. Wanting to help the people in his area, he gave up competitive racing and entered politics and in the short stint in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) established himself as someone with great potential for high office in that organisation. His leadership quality could have made a difference to the people in his constituency. Alfred will undoubtedly be missed by the many people in his constituency that he served and especially the Motor Racing fraternity in Jamaica and the English Speaking Caribbean. On behalf of all avid Motor Racers and fans, we express our sincere sympathy to his farnilv and relatives.
ATTENTION ALL SPECTATORS!! o
Unofficial motorcycle racing was being done by a group of enthusiasts who love the sport and would race along the SeawaliNlissengen Road, and the long stretch at Thomas Lands, when Sergeant Bram, Sergeant Williams and Inspector Claire of the British Guiana Police Force Traffic Department was not around Names like late Roy Shabrol, Eric Vieira, Neil Savory, Desmond Basil, Malcolm Andrade, Max Jardim, Alfred & Alvro Gouveia, Mario Mendonca, Mark Steele, Noel Foster, Herman & Eddie Danrade, Peter Jardim, Hashim Hack, Yusuf Ali, Roddy Toochung, Joe Mendes, David Foo, Trevor Mendes, Hillary Jardine, Dennis Ferreira, Naz Sabga, Gary & Ivor King, Dennis Fletcher, Jackie Gouveia, Joe Gouveia, Henry Fitt and many more. Most of the above names traveled to Sixty Three Beach, Courentyne, every Easter weekend to part take or follow the boys who were racing. At that time the East Coast Road was two strips of cement along the middle of the road and red burnt earth on either side of the road. By the time you arrive at Rosegnol, you were covered with red dust from head to toe after several hours of riding this long, very rough terrain. Whenever you got a chance to get on to the cement strips, as this was as high as fourto six inches above the red road, you would. try to stay on as long as possible playing chicken with the on coming vehicles, but that was partofthefun. The British Guiana Motorcycle Club was started in 1956 by Eric Vieira and Mark Steele Mark's father Mr. Hector Steele was President, Mark was Vice President and Eric Vieira was Secretary. Neil Savory was Treasurer and Hillary Jardine was a Committee Member. B.G.M.C.C. held its first meeting on Sunday 17th November1957 atthe Bomber Dispersal Circuit, Atkinson Field. The participants were: Stanley Bernard, Johnny Lee, N. Perreira, I. Chang, C. DeSouza, V. DeAbreu, Johnny Terrill, David Chin-A-Loy, Max Jardim, Noel Foster, I. Ram jon, Dennis D'Carnbra, V. & L. DcAbreu, Mike Brassington, Joe & Frank Gouveia, Vernon Ranchrejee and Lloyd Ferreira. The second B.G.M.C.C. meeting at Atkinson Field, was on 20th April 1958 sawtorthefirsttime two entries from Barbados; Clarence Hill and Walter Johnson. And from the U.S.A. Norman IIlsey, who won the 125 cc class on a N.S.U. Johnny Terrill won the 250 cc class on a Husqvarna. Noel Foster won the 350 cc class on a B.S.A. And Roy Shabrol won the 500 cc class on a B.S.A. Joe Gouveia's double victory on an Itom. In 1959, a new set of bikers were seen along with some ofthe old chaps listed above.
