Motor Racing

can be important

On .Sunday, No.vember 2, 1'9:69, thousands of 'cars, trucks, vans, motor cycles and even pedal cycles transported near.ly 20,000 sports fans to Guyana's South Dakota Racing Circuit at 'I'imehr i. These sports enthusiasts made their p il gr image to Timehr i to witness the Guyana Motor Racing Club's presentation of the first ever Commonwealth Caribbean motor racing championship. It was easily the biggest ~ crowd ever to ·attend a motor '. race meeting and the principal attractions were Arnold Poole (substituting fo-r his more famous brother Alec Poole) and Mike Crabtree. These two outstanding British drivers of world renown were to match ski1ls with drivers from Antigua', 'I'r inio ao , Bar-bados, Venezuela, the USA and the Iocal contingent. The appearance of theseillustr ious competitors on the Timehri circuit was rnade ,p.os.s:ble through a fine .gesture by B.O.A:C. in can, junction with the management of the Pegasus Hotel who sponsored the Br-itish ·aces .and timed the opening 0.£ what is now Guyana's outstandlng hotel and tourist ceritr e, to co-incide with the GMRC's presentation o.f the 'grandest' .and most excitrng meeting ever held in Q)1yana.' . Poole, Crabtree and the Antiguans; Mike Tyrell and-Jack Tii;p,p performed magnificerrtly and justified the faith and .goodw il l of their sponsors.

The spontaneous suppor t given by the record breaking crowd was an indication that Guyana's sport ing 'public will give unstmted support to or ganisattcne that are honest, .progressive and are willing to go. to the limit to provide the paying public with the best perIor me rs. T-od-ay, motor racing is one of the best (if not the ihest) or ganiscd spo rts run in Guyana. The rea s on is simple. Motor racing is run by an Executive Cornrni ttee of eff'ic.ent, dedicated, selfless m en, who, .be.c ause 'of their devotion to the ga.me they Iove , have helped this sport to make remarkable strides in a few years. The Improvement of this ever-expanding sport has m ade such an impact on fans that cr-owds of seven to 10,00.0 attend local meetirigs and this year's international meeting is expected to attract over 25,000 spectators. Taking a quick look to the history of the GMRC one discovers that in 1959 the Br itish Guiana Moto-r Racing Club was form-

Tourist

attraction By JOHN NESTOR ed by a small .group of motor cycle lovers .and that No. 6,3 Beach on the Corerrtyne was the venue of the first race meeting. This became a regular week-end exercise and the young speed aces from. the 'city rode to the Corentyne on Satur d ays and matched skills on No. 6-3 beach, on Sundays. Someone discovered that Atkinson Field had a borniber dispus.al cir cu.t that offere d a more so.lid surface and a better atmosphere Ior developing the aport so the venue b ecams Atkinson Field. There were also speed fanatics in the motor car section iand in 1957 the Br-itish Guiana Courtesy Car C1Uib came into :being. Their exercise took the form of Slp,eed trials and dexter-ity tests and set the stage for the merger of the two clubs, and the sponsoring of the first motor rear and motor cycle race meeting in the Eastern Car ibbean. It was autorna tic that these two groups would [oin forces and form one body for the promotion

of motor radng in Guyana and quite soon the GUY>3 rn a Mo.tor Racing Club became a reality. Since then the spor-t has <progressed by leaps and bounds. The G.M.R.C'sciub house is a very modern structure, built primar ily through self he'sp. It has been transformed into a beautiful architectural bus ldi ng that fits into the atmcsohere of motor racing Iike a well made glove and even now, militant members trek to the dub every Sunday to do carperiter ing and br icklaying to Iurther 'mp!"ove the appearance of the building and its surroundings. The GMRC plan a com pr ehe ns.ve programme each year and this includes the Iprama:tion of several local meetings that help to gear the local riders and drivers fOT the two big International meetings ar路a路und Apr il-May and October-November. This also he lps to ma.n tain E1Pe.ctat-O:r interest which is increasing with every meeting. The Antigua contingent made their first .appear.ance in 19'6-B and were so impressed with what they saw that they formed the Antigua Auto Sports Club. They were back for the last mee tirig and their top driver Mike Tyrell established a laip record of 1 min. 2,3.4 sees. in his Ford U2, while winning two events. This success encouraged them to send a team to compete in the United Kingdom, last year. Tr inidad and Barbados have always sent top teams to take :p路art part rn tk~J"":2eting's and have had reasonable success a aa inst the 10路cal competitors. 'I'hese teams are usually acccmpanied by a ccnl in-

How safe a driver

By SAfETY MEASURE

I I! ,

YOUR car can be a pleasure or a killer (ugly word but neverthele::;s true) and it is up to you to mak.a it one or the other. Don't be embarrassed. Take a look at yourself and ask silently: Just how safe am I behind this steering wheel?

One routing answer, usually with false mcdestv is, "Well, I rnay net be tr;e best in the world, but ... ", followed by an account of how well yOU handled yourself under axtr ernely difficult circumstances the other day. Few (~ÂŁ us ever admit failings when it comes to handling a car. Once in the driver's seat you are exhilarated with the Iee ling that you have conquered a powerful mechanical adversary-in the meantime forgetting that in the hands of a careless or inexperienced operator-v-an automobile becomes potentially a death dealing weapon more lethal than a pistol or a Remington. In Guyana last year 163 perIost their lives on our roads and the year before 137. The same grim statistics are reported all over the world and it is reliably reported that more people die each year by road accidents than by rail and alt other forms of transportation together.

SOilS

Ironically, many of these accidents can be prevented with just a little care, effort, time and a spot of '2xtra cash. A manual is provided when you buy a vehide. Spare some time and go

.,

OV0i' the details. The exercise may save a life (probably yours). Even your little pocket diary gives you pointers on the basic things that even a moron can tackle. You don't have to be a mechanic to check your tyre pressure, brakes, blinkers, and So on.

Outdated legislation must unfortunately take much of the blame for the sad state of affairs on our roads. Our traffic laws are more suited to the era of the tram car and horse-drawn carr iage than to the problem of today when large numbers of various types of .vehicles create congestion on the roads. A move must be made from the top in an effort to arrest the carriage and indiscriminate slaughter taking place. In short the laws must be rid of cobweb and brought up to date .. Today's bad driver - providing he dossn't kill anyone is can sid ere d a big joke. The afferider, who outwits a traffic cop, attains hero status. Speeding earns a few raised eyebrows and at worst a ticket or light fine after a brief and soon forgotten c-ourt appearance. The drunken driver -Road Enemy 'No. I-has yet to experience the rigorous laws faced by his counterparts in other countries with their Br-eathalisers and what not. Too often a case flops because petent

expertly

S In 0 kin g exhausts are frowned upon but yet nothing is done to carry out a rigid check for faulty brakes or dangerously smooth tyres. "The onus for keeping a vehicle in a roadworthy condition is on the driver," a Traffic Officer said recently, But that is infinitesimal consolation for the relatives of those whom the driver may have maimed or killed. Better roads allow drivers to go that much faster, vehicles are selling like hot cakes but the root cause of most of the accidents is the incompetent driver who is getting partners every day. A standard check before you rnovc off is a must and if you have the kids along, a double check is compulsory. Make use of all available safety devices . . . they are not luxuries. One illustration of how costly a simple lapse can prove, occurred not too long ago when a couple put their darling Penny in the back seat and forgot to rell up the windows. Three-year o ld Penny couldn't resist putting he-r tiny fist out to touch all those nice people. Joe Nocare, looking for a quick pick-up, like the road hog he was, missed the car by the thickness of his paintwork, but he didn't miss Iittle Penny. The couple was unhurt, the car undamaged, but they were no longer parents.

In

a

m,an's world By SHARON' YOU could say that Zalaika Raharnan, in her MGB sports car, is a woman un .a man's worfd, For she is .a racing enthusiast, and motor racing, one of Guyana's most po.pula r sports, is regarded as alrncst vexclusive ly UIP a man's alley. Zalaika did not allow this to keep her 'Out. In f,act it served as extra, encouragement to her, for she would have liked to have 'been Guyana's fir, sit;,woman driver. This was not actually so, as Jan Correia, seemed to. have had the same idea, and the March 19'67 meeting saw both of them making their de'but in Guyana's racing world. Za'la.ka's first taste of the .spor t certainly acted as as-pur. She raced again that October and again in 19'69,and although she had little success she had improved a great deal. What first put the idea of meter racing into Zalaika's head? "Well, my brothers were always very keenori racing. They gave me a lot of encouragement. so I thought, why not give it a bash?" she told me. "But," she went en, "a real errthusiast should have two cars if he or she intended to go in ser iouely for racing. There's need to tune the car before each race, which is quite expensive, then af ter racing day it has to, be brought back into road trim." There is certainly no shor.ta,g'e of women -driv,ersvn Guyana's roads, so it is rather surprising

WESTMAAS that 'more have not shown interes.t, in trying their luck on the track. Zalaika thinks that maybe "they can't afford it," or els-e perhzips their 'boyfr iends or husbands may clbject. :She' herself faced a Iit.tle such opposltion from her father before her, first race, ibut as she had kept it to herself that she was actually taking ;part, until the very day of the vmeeting, it was then too late to stop her! However, as she 'continued to race and showed no ill effects, her parents .qutckly accepted it. . Another factor that might '!perha'-ps be holding women back is that they ;oftenhave little technical knowledge of engines. Zalaika admits that she herself is not interested 'enough in. engines 'as, someone who races ought to be. She' can tell when something .is wrong, but 'Often cannot identify the fault or correct it herself. Such lack of-, technical knowledge is probably quite discouraging to potential racers. A race exclusively for women, Zalaika thinks, would definitely ser ve as an encouragement for mo-re of the fairer sex to enter. Zalaika f.riished the pleasant Interview by saying that she thought many women, would like to have a' t.ry at motor racing. All they re al.ly needed, was that extra push. "If my brothers hadn't been 'pushing' me, she declared, "I'm sure I myself wo-uld not have been there among the men."

!IT would be difficult far me to. remember exactly when I became interested in mo.tor cars, motorcycles and motor racing generally. All I know is that it was a very long time ago and I have been extremely interestd ever since. Indeed I was able to. identify the make of car without seeing it by listening {OJ; the be'atbf the engine, Many enjoyable hours wer~ . spent locked away in so;til,~ roorn or more frequently the to ilet with a basin and an old bro ornstick , The !basill" served as the steering wiheel, and the broomstick the ,gear lever. Va-rious engine noises were simulated using my mouth. I must have spent two: or three years of my young Iife going through the motions Qof'driving a motor car and riding a motorcycle. As I grew a- Idttleolder most of my spare time ham school was spent v iaiting the vardous garages Inspecting motor cars and cycles that were there for sale, There were not many makes of motor cycles of which BSA side valve was the most popular. I can remember quite rclear-: ly my first OPP(H1;unity to ride a pnotorcvcle. There was ll- parson living two doors from where I bived who. :o.\vned a 250 c.c. side valve BSA.
