Effective, empowered educators-that’s the theme of
our 2016 Professional Development Conference. But at the Arkansas Education Association, it’s more than a theme; it’s what AEA’s thousands of members strive for in school buildings every day. As a 6th grade teacher and the president of AEA, I hope you use this conference as an opportunity to empower yourself with the tools and knowledge you need to be effective for all students. Our students are counting on us to return to school with new ideas and cutting edge strategies. I am thrilled that you are here and welcome you to this year’s Professional Development Conference. The Arkansas Education Association is committed to ensuring the success of every student in Arkansas, no matter their zip code. This commitment is demonstrated by the variety of workshops we are able to offer this year. These workshops were selected to ensure that we are addressing a wide variety of student needs and meeting them where they are. Our goal is to equip educators with the latest in teaching trends and educational opportunities so that Arkansas’s students can thrive.

This year’s conference has some extra special opportunities. Don’t miss your chance to join us Thursday night for our Rozzell Lecture at the Clinton Presidential Center. This year, we welcome Shanna Peeples, the 2015 National Teacher of the Year, who will discuss The Power of Student Voice in Today’s Classroom. The lecture will be followed by a reception and viewing of the newest Clinton Library exhibit which explores the famous British rock band, the Beatles. The Rozzell Lecture, reception and exhibit viewing is free and open to the public. In addition, conference participants are encouraged to stop by the EdgeHill room at the DoubleTree Hotel to pick up free books to take back to your students. This book giveaway is made possible by the Arkansas Delta Resource Center and Dr. Robert Anderson. I hope you take advantage of all this year’s conference has to offer. Together, we will become Arkansas’s most effective and empowered educators!

THE POWER OF STUDENT VOICE IN TODAY’S CLASSROOM - “When you bring student voice into your lesson, that is when you get a great leap of creativity and innovation,” says 2015 National Teacher of the Year Shanna Peeples of Amarillo, Texas. In this session, Peeples will show how she has incorporated student voice into her instruction to the great benefit of her students – and her teaching practice. Its twin focus on student engagement and teacher leadership is applicable to all levels and content areas. The presentation aims to foster conversation, new ideas and strategies all teachers can take back to their classroom. Join us after the Lecture for a Reception and tour of the newest Clinton Center exhibit: Ladies and Gentlemen… The Beatles!. The Clinton Center’s newest temporary exhibit, Ladies and Gentlemen… The Beatles!, brings us back to the early ‘60s when rock & roll was re-energized— some say saved—by four lads from Liverpool. The exhibit covers the period from early 1964 through mid-1966—the years Beatlemania ran rampant in America. During this time the band affected nearly every aspect of pop culture, including fashion, art, advertising, media, and, of course, music. On display are many Beatles-related pop culture artifacts from the period, as well as correspondence, instruments, posters, photographs, interviews, interactive displays, and an oral history booth in which visitors can leave their own impressions of The Beatles.

About the Rozzell Lecture Series THE ROZZELL LECTURE BEGAN IN 1977 to permanently honor Forrest Rozzell by introducing Arkansas to new ideas and trends in education. Rozzell dedicated 46 years of his life to advancing public education in Arkansas, first, as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and later as Executive Secretary for the Arkansas Education Association (AEA). From the time he first came to work for the AEA in 1939, Rozzell was an architect of almost every public policy that elevated education in Arkansas. His accomplishments include the initiated act of 1948 that reduced the number of school districts from 2,179 to fewer than 450 and gave every child access for the first time to a high school education. In 1956, he worked to push through a significant tax program to raise the pay of teachers and expand
educational opportunities. In 1956, when segregationists were trying to force members of the school board at
Hoxie, AR, to reverse their decision to integrate, Rozzell declared that the board had taken the moral path and deserved the support of the state. The board members took the threats and stood their ground. Hoxie was the first battleground of school desegregation in the South where law prevailed. On Sept. 24, 1957, the day after a mob encouraged by Gov. Orval E. Faubus’ defiance of court orders to desegregate Little Rock schools rampaged around Little Rock Central High School, Rozzell delivered a speech to the Greater Little Rock Federation of Women’s Clubs on American heritage stating, “If you believe in the principles of that heritage - faith in human dignity and equality of opportunity - now is the time,” Rozzell declared, “to show it by example.” Effective and Empowered Educators - 7
