2017 AEA E3 Conference Program

Page 1

Empowered educators are the most effective advocates for their students, their profession, and their communities. That’s why our 2017 Professional Development Conference continues to build on this theme. As President of the Arkansas Education Association, I welcome you as we spend two days together learning best practices and new strategies to improve teaching and learning in our state. I would like to extend a special welcome to the early career educators joining us at this year’s conference. It is our goal to ensure that you have the support you need as you launch your career. We know that when early career educators receive the support they need, they perform better for their students and remain in the profession longer. In addition, all conference participants are encouraged to stop by the Edgehill Room at the DoubleTree Hotel to pick up free books to take back for your students. This book giveaway is made possible again through the generosity of the Arkansas Delta Resources Center and Dr. Robert Anderson. Also, do not forget to join us at 6pm on Thursday evening at the Clinton Presidential Center for our annual Forrest Rozzell Lecture. We are thrilled to welcome this year’s lecturer, Jahana Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year. Ms. Hayes has a powerful personal story about the importance of public education and will share strategies to improve your practice as well. Following the lecture, we invite participants to enjoy complimentary entry to the current Clinton Presidential Center exhibits Mandela: The Journey to Ubuntu; and Art of Africa: One Continent, Limitless Vision. To those of you who are already members of the Arkansas Education Association, thank you. We value each and every one of our members and this Professional Development Conference is just one way we work to build the education profession and support the work you do in school buildings across Arkansas every day. To those of you interested in becoming part of the largest, most powerful professional association of educators in Arkansas, I encourage you to visit our membership booth on the first floor of the DoubleTree and find out more about the advantages of AEA membership. Thank you for attending this year’s conference and for your continued

commitment to public education and to your students. It is my sincere hope that this conference provides you with the tools, resources, ideas, and connections to improve teaching and learning in our state. Together, we are Arkansas’s most effective and empowered educators!

CLASSROOM TO COMMUNITY: STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING – Through service learning, 2016 National Teacher of the Year Jahana Hayes expands her classroom walls into the community. Community service projects builds skills and empowerment, and provide students the opportunity to transfer the critical thinking and problem solving skills taught in the classroom into the real world. It also allows students to know the power of being the giver. Students build a sense of increased selfworth and self-sufficiency. This in turn can lead to academic success. Hayes will share best practices for engaging educators to develop plans of their own to expand the network of teachers engaging in this valuable practice.

About the Rozzell Lecture Series

T

he Rozzell Lecture began in 1977 to permanently honor Forrest Rozzell by introducing Arkansas to new ideas and trends in education. Rozzell dedicated 46 years of his life to advancing public education in Arkansas, first as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, and later as Executive Secretary for the Arkansas Education Association (AEA). From the time he first came to work for AEA in 1939, Rozzell was an architect of almost every public policy that elevated education in Arkansas. His accomplishments include the initiated act of 1948 that reduced the number of school districts from 2,179 to fewer than 450 and gave every child access to a high school education for the first time. In 1956, he worked to push through a significant tax program to raise the pay of teachers and expand educational opportunities.

In 1956, when segregationists were trying to force members of the school board at Hoxie, AR to reverse their decision to integrate, Rozzell declared that the board had taken the moral path and deserved the support of the state. The board members took the threats and stood their ground. Hoxie became the first battleground of school desegregation in the South where law prevailed. On September 24, 1957, after a mob encouraged by Governor Orval E. Faubus’s defiance of court orders to desegregate Little Rock schools rampaged around Little Rock Central High School, Rozzell delivered a speech to the Greater Little Rock Federation of Women’s Clubs on American Heritage, stating, “If you believe in the principles of that heritage – faith in human dignity and equality of opportunity – now is the time to show it by example.” Effective and Empowered Educators - 7

SEE YOU THERE! We’re looking forward to seeing you at the AEA Representative Assembly! On November 3rd and 4th hundreds of AEA members will serve as delegates on behalf of AEA members from across Arkansas at the Representative Assembly or ‘RA’.

FAST FACTS: How does the Arkansas Education Association set its priorities? At the Representative Assembly we set our organization’s priorities by votes of credentialed delegate members.

Who attends AEA’s Representative Assembly? The Representative Assembly (RA) consists of delegates representing local affiliates. These delegates are elected by their local association and represent preK-12 Educators, including Education Support Professionals, Student Members, Retired Members, and other member groups.

8 - Effective and Empowered Educators

What is the RA? The RA is the primary legislative and policymaking body of the Arkansas Education Association (AEA) and derives its powers from, and is responsible to, the membership. Various committees, constituencies, leadership groups, and delegates from local affiliates gather to set policy and chart the direction of AEA business. The RA is a democratic, deliberative assembly.
