With innovation as a central theme in architecture and pedagogy, the Bryant Academic Innovation Center is a groundbreaking facility destined to become a new prototype in academia.
Designed by the nationally acclaimed educational architecture firm of EYP Architecture and Engineering, the Academic Innovation Center’s unprecedented design concepts will create a forum for innovation in what we teach and how we teach it, advancing future generations of teaching and learning. As a crucial component of the Bryant Builds program, the largest facilities initiative in Bryant history, the Academic Innovation Center will become Bryant’s academic centerpiece. The building has been designed to provide unprecedented flexibility, with light-filled collaborative spaces that advance remarkable new models of experiential learning and new learning modalities. With tiered and flat classrooms, spaces for group work and large gatherings, and abundant real-world and virtual resources, the building will inspire new levels of educational excellence and foster unique learning opportunities for students in both the College of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences.

For more than 40 years, the Unistructure has been the primary academic building on Bryant’s campus. Constructed in 1971, the Unistructure has undergone extensive renovation over the years in order to maximize the square footage available for instructional space. Our growing student body requires additional academic space, however, and innovative pedagogies demand an innovative facility. The University’s 48,000 square foot Academic Innovation Center (AIC), which will provide two-stories of instructional space including new classrooms, will open the doors to innovative methods of teaching and learning. 1

The second floor of the AIC will feature six additional classrooms offering both tiered and flat floor configurations, and multiple breakout rooms for student use. On both floors of the building there will be open lounge seating as well as small group study space. Classrooms will be outfitted with smart technology including projectors, whiteboard surfaces, audio system, wireless projection with lecture capture and multiple videoconferencing capabilities, and flexible furnishings that can change from class-to-class supporting various innovative lecture modes, group setups, and individual work. This learning space enables all students to connect multiple devices (phones, laptops, tablets) and share content, view data side by side while interacting with other students. Students’ collaborative and project-based learning will be enhanced by light-filled classrooms with modular furniture, wireless monitors, writable whiteboards and writable glass walls.

Bryant recognizes that academic spaces can have a significant impact on student learning, success, and retention. A world-class academic facility is essential to reaching Bryant’s full potential as a vibrant, 24/7 community of scholars. A committee of faculty and academic leadership informed the design of the Academic Innovation Center, providing insights of daily use and emerging pedagogical approaches. The Bryant faculty are now continuing their efforts and preparing for the new AIC space through a recently announced Fellows Program, which prompts faculty to explore and develop best practices around “Innovative Pedagogy in an Active and Collaborative Classroom.”
