For the past two years, Priscilla Welch has been volunteering as a transcriptionist for the Krupp Library’s collection of World War II letters. Priscilla has helped transcribe letters sent to the Bryant Service Club as well as letters from Professor Judy Litoff’s U.S. Women and WWII collection. She recently completed transcribing the extensive set of correspondence from Saidee R. Leach to her serviceman son, Douglas E. Leach (pictured at right), part of the larger collection of U.S. Women and WWII. The Leach family lived locally, in Edgewood, RI. Saidee Leach’s letters, sent from October 1943 through April 1945, present a highly-detailed example of life on the Rhode Island home front during WWII. Douglas Leach’s book, Now Hear This: The Memoir of a Junior Naval Officer in the Great Pacific War, is avail-

able in the Krupp Library. Priscilla is looking forward to her next volunteer project, transcribing a bundle of letters from Edith Sokol Speert. Priscilla, who has always had an interest in the WWII home front, says, “I feel so lucky to be doing a volunteer job that I just love.” For more information, please visit the Digital Commons at digitalcommons.bryant.edu.

Introducing Andria Tieman Krupp Library is pleased to welcome our new Part-Time Reference Librarian, Andria Tieman! Andria comes to us with varied experience in customer service, libraries and higher education, including work at the Fargo (ND) Public Library, Quinebaug Valley Community College, and Warwick Public Library. We asked Andria to tell us a little bit about herself: How long have you lived in Rhode Island? I moved to Rhode Island three years ago from Fargo, North Dakota (of movie fame) — the snowiest scenes of the movie were shot right outside my hometown! I grew up in extreme northeastern Minnesota and North Dakota, 30 minutes from Canada. It was cold. Favorite place you’ve visited? I can't pick a favorite, but I do have a soft spot for England since I did a semes-

ster abroad there as an undergrad (plus, I love the accents). Do you prefer dogs or cats? CATS! My kitty, Watson, is a genius. Dogs are smelly and overeager. Visit Andria at the reference desk on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings, or contact her at atieman@bryant.edu.

Crash Course: the American Automobile Industry's Road from Glory to Disaster by Paul Ingrassia This is the saga of the American automobile industry's rise and demise, a story of hubris, denial, missed opportunities, and self-inflicted wounds that culminates with the president of the United States ushering two of Detroit's Big Three car companies—once proud symbols of prosperity—through bankruptcy. Pulitzer winner Paul Ingrassia answers the big questions: Was Detroit's self-destruction inevitable? What were the key turning points? Why did Japanese automakers manage American workers better than the American companies themselves did? He also describes dysfunctional corporate cultures and Detroit's perverse system of "inverse layoffs." Along the way we meet Detroit's frustrated reformers and witness the wrenching decisions that Ford executives had to make to avoid GM's fate. Informed by Ingrassia's 25 years of covering the auto industry for The Wall Street Journal, and showing an appreciation for Detroit's profound influence on our country's society and culture, this is a uniquely American and deeply instructive story.
