“…Now my son, I know that skiing is for dinosaurs, and old people, as all 13 year old kids would tell you. I would like you, to explain to me, what it is that so enthralls you, about strapping on a two by four with rope, and go flailing, with reckless abandon down a hill.” Excerpt from “A Skiing Poem” by Jim Vaughn. hether you are a dinosaur, old person, kid, or kid at heart, flailing down a hill with reckless abandon, or the panache of an experienced skier, the slopes at Bryce are the place to be. The entire family can enjoy 8 beautifully-groomed ski slopes, appropriate for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Skiers can hone their skills at the nationally-known Horst Locher Ski School or enroll their children in the SKIwee or
Mini Rider programs. These programs cater to children ages 4 ½ to 8 years of age. In SKIwee children learn the basics of skiing. Mini Rider teaches kids age 6-8 basic snowboarding skills. Both are half-day sessions taught by experienced instructors. There are also skill improvement lessons for adult boarders and skiers, adult racing clinics, weekend mountain adventures with Junior Superstars, and of course, NASTAR racing events. Slopes with 1/3 of the runs designated as beginner, 1/3 as intermediate, and 1/3 as advanced, give Bryce a distinct advantage over other ski resorts in the area. Our family-friendly slopes can accommodate everyone, at all levels. Information on the SKIwee and Mini Rider programs as well as private and group lessons can be found on the Bryce website (www.bryceresort.com) under the Winter Sports tab.

makes us stand out is our ability to introduce snow sports to young and old in a caring, meaningful way so that they stick with the sport. Q. I think the ownership that our leadership team has within their businesses; there seems to be nothing that someone won’t do to try and make their operation better. I could not think of a better group to work with. Q. What has been the most rewarding experience you have had to date? A. The sheer passion of our guests and members has been absolutely fanShenandoah County, Virginia tastic. I’ve worked at places with many stakeholders but the incredible part here has been the volunteerism. Our weekend Ambassador Program is a great example, where we have members taking part of their weekend and Bryce Resort picking guests up at their cars with ski equipment, kids, and clothing, shuttling them to the ticket windows and ski school while talking about what a great place this is for them to enjoy. Say What?
But they are most tangibly sensed in the village of Orkney Springs; in Basye itself, on Bryce Mountain, the hills beyond it and to the west of Resort Drive; and at Lake Laura which, as it happens, receives a good part of its waters from Orkney Springs. It is a gathering basin. A holy stoup, indeed. It makes one think about ‘quickened waters’. “Lake Laura can be thought of as the main basin of the waters of its neighboring village, the area around it, and of a network of surface and subterranean sources. It is physically connected via Big Stony Creek and other waterways with Orkney Springs. A century ago Orkney was famous for its healthful, ‘restorative’ waters and its seven or eight unique springs. The underlying karst terrain of the region, which is not really mapped out, makes it highly probable that subterranean streams, possibly the ones which fed the springs of Orkney Springs, are also ‘talking to’ the surface streams that flow into Laura.” If you are interested in learning more log on to http://basyevortex.com and get the whole story. But, whether you believe in vortexes or not, it does make you Say What?
Do you know about the Basye Vortex? As excerpted from The Basye Vortex website, Page Hanes, editor. “There is something about the energy in this place. I’m serious. Someone ought to look into it scientifically.” -- heard at a spiritual retreat at Orkney Springs, VA, 1995. “…Basye is a hamlet in the Appalachian foothills of Virginia, very near the West Virginia border. As is the case with Sedona, AZ and Asheville, NC, two other vortex centers, Basye and Orkney Springs are places to which people are drawn without being able to say exactly why. “Basye itself was named after the family of William Bryce’s wife, Martha, and there begins an interesting part of the story. Because the name ‘Basyé,’ generally agreed to be of French background, is also a French word, it affirms what people believe to be the purpose of vortex energy in general: ‘basyé’ means ‘threshold,’ ‘sill,’ or ‘portal’. “Today, contemporary ‘Basye-Bryce Mountain’ (as it appears in census reports), together with its sister Orkney Springs, is on the global map of what are referred to as psychic energy centers, or spiritual vortexThe Dock at Lake Laura es. And the open secret within this is the largest baptismal stoup in North America, Lake Laura. “Vortex energies in general, palpable to psychically sensitive people throughout the Basye area (oddly enough, visitors especially), are not experienced by all. 18 • Bryce Resort

Woodstock, The Perfect Destination
O
ne of the oldest towns in the Shenandoah Valley and the fourth oldest town in Virginia, Woodstock is nestled between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the county seat of Shenandoah County, covers 3.2 square miles and its current population is about 4,200. The Town was established by charter in March of 1761 as a part of what was then Frederick County. The Town was originally formed by a land grant from Lord Fairfax, and founded as Muellerstadt (Miller Town) in 1752 after founder Jacob Miller. The Town’s charter was sponsored by George Washington in
Virginia’s House of Burgesses. Woodstock has been the County Seat since the County’s formation in 1772. John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg delivered his now famous sermon at his church located in the heart of Woodstock in January 1776. At the conclusion of his farewell sermon, Muhlenberg threw off his clerical robes to reveal an officer’s uniform beneath and shouted, “There is a time to pray and a

The Chips Fall on Rt. 11 The main chip line at Rt. 11 Potato Chips
Sarah Cohen
S
arah Cohen was really a pretzel person at heart, so when she opened a potato chip business in a small building in rural Middlletown, Virginia in 1992, it was really just an experiment. “We started on the lowest rung in the snack food ladder, and we did it for 5 years before we realized we were making a really good product,” Sarah says. Little did she realize then that Route 11 Chips would become one of America’s premier specialty chip producers. Today Sarah and business partner Mike Connelly operate Route 11 Potato Chips, one of the most well-known brands in the Mid-Atlantic states and Washington, DC markets, and can be found in Cracker Barrel restaurants and Cost Plus stores. Route 11’s new state-of-the art plant in Mount Jackson, Virginia invites food consumers and all chip lovers to visit, taste the product, and learn how potato chips are made. 22 • Bryce Resort
“We like to show people how chips are made. It’s rare to see how something is made today,” she says. Route 11 offers a Fry-Viewing experience. It’s not a tour of the building. Rather, through large glass windows visitors can experience the chip making process. Make sure you call ahead (800294-SPUD) to ensure it’s a chip-producing day. This is especially important for tour groups traveling through the Shenandoah Valley. The viewing is free, and there is free chip-tasting as well. What makes Route 11 Chips special? Potatoes are off-loaded from tractor-trailers.
Shenandoah Travel Guide
“Every chipper has their own recipe,” Sarah says. “Most chips are produced in volume by large producers. They often use the least expensive methods of production.” She says because she loves good food, the Route 11 goal is to make a really good product. “We use the highest quality oils, and that is what gives the chips their unique character.” Route 11’s success almost forced the company out of the business. “We had been in the Middletown location for 15 years, growing slowly each year. Demand was exceeding supply, and there was no place to expand,” Sarah says.
Rt. 11 Chips produced each week, consisting of 8 different flavors, including Lightly Salted, Barbecue, Dill Pickle, Salt & V i n e g a r , Chesapeake Crab, Sour Cream & Chive, Mama Zuma’s Revenge, Sweet Potato and Tabard Farm Yukon Gold. Despite the success of being in national restaurant chains and selected grocery stores, it is the small mom and pop stores that Cohen says are the backbone of Route 11 sales. “Because we are small our chips can have character. Our chips are closer to what potato chips were before they were produced in large volume,” she says. If you can’t get to the plant, you still can find Rt. 11 Chips in The potato frying process your area. Shenandoah Vineyards in Edinburg is the oldest winery in the Shenandoah Valley, and fourth oldest in Virginia. “Shenandoah combines Old World techniques with modern technology to produce a variety of impeccable wines in a peaceful and inviting setting,” says Emma Randell, president of Shenandoah Vineyards. At Shenandoah you can take a tour to see how grapes are grown, harvested, processed, and wine coaxed from the grape into the wine bottle, and made ready to sample. Cave Ridge Vineyards, near Mount Jackson, is a family-owned and operated vineyard which emphasizes the fruit character of the grape using a minimalist approach to its winemaking. “Cave Ridge adheres to sustainable farming practices in order to promote a healthy ecosystem for future generations,” says owner and winemaker Randy Phillips. At Crooked Run Cellars, also near Mount Jackson, grape varietals best suited for the region and growing site have been chosen. “Crooked Run’s goal is to create wine that welcomes people that are new to wines, as well as holding the attention of the seasoned wine drinker,” says owner Jennifer Adamy. “Our growing sites highlight our unique growing conditions, with temperatures, soil conditions, rainfall and wind, producing grapes balanced in sugars and acidity.” “The end result,” she says, “is a wonderfully balanced wine that requires minimal interference from the winemaker.” The vineyards and wineries offer tasting rooms open to the public. We recommend you call ahead to plan your visit. Bryce Resort
