A
s fall gives way to winter, the calls come in with increasing frequency … “When do your slopes open? Do you have snow yet? Can I make a group reservation for snow tubing? When can I enroll my children in ski school...?” What makes winter so different? There are a lot more people around all at once rather than the steady flow during the rest of the year. There are tons of kids running around in ski boots (the thundering herd), as well as piles of discarded, misplaced, or lost mittens, hats, socks (huh?) all over the lobby, restrooms, and restaurants. The personalities are different, too. That’s why winter and ski season is so much fun! VARIETY! Who comes to Bryce for winter activities? Well, people of all ages from all over the tri-state area (DC, its not actually a state although they
Bryce Resort
would like to be…), MD, & VA and even some from West Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania). The resort is well known as a very family friendly destination with lots to do that is open to the public. The attraction? Bryce is a four season resort – open 365 days a year. We never shut down during “shoulder” seasons. As a four season resort there is something going on all year – one can play golf all year long if there is no natural snow. Just check for frost delays. The unique thing about the resort is that you can ski, snowboard and tube in the “back yard” and golf in the “front yard” on the same day – weather permitting. Where else can you do that? Let’s begin with why the skiing and snowboarding is so great for all levels of aptitude. There are eight beautifully groomed slopes – one-third rated beginner, one-third intermediate, and

one-third advanced. There is full snow coverage on the slopes because of the state-of-the-art snow guns. Snow-making is a science – yes, it is real snow. The only difference is that it blows from huge guns that loom over the slopes, rather than soundlessly falling from the sky. It is beautiful to watch – snow is made during the late night/early morning hours. The slopes are lit and the snow blows at an incredible rate for hours and hours. It is most beautiful at dawn. Bryce also inaugurated a new quad lift last winter (for a total of 5 lifts) allowing lines to move faster and eliminate
log jams at the bottom of the slopes. The new lift can move upwards of 1800 people per hour up the 500-foot vertical rise. Skiers can hone their skills at our nationally-known Horst Locher Ski School or enroll their children in the Kinder School & Ride programs. These programs cater to children ages 4 to 7 years of age. In Kinder School children learn the basics of skiing. The Ride program teaches kids age 67 basic snowboarding skills. Both are half-day sessions taught by experienced instructors. Class size for Kinder School ranges from 2 to 8

children per instructor. Ride classes have a maximum size of 5 students. There are also skill improvement lessons for adult boarders and skiers, adult racing clinics, weekend mountain adventures with Junior Superstars, and of course, NASTAR and Collegiate racing events – more on that in the interview with Doug Grayson – a tease to keep reading! If you are not a skier there is snow tubing which anyone can perfect – sit in the tube and fly down our 800’ tubing lanes. There are group discounts, so it is a perfect activity for Church groups, school groups, or a bunch of friends getting together for some fun. After all the skiing and tubing no doubt you are hungry. Bryce has several options – from the most casual to the more formal. The Fireside Grill is the most casual. Snow bunnies of any age and gender can order various din-
ing selections from breakfast sandwiches to burgers and dogs to pizza. It is fun to grab a hot chocolate and sit by the indoor circular fire pit or snag a picnic table at the base of the slopes to watch the skiers and boarders. The

Copper Kettle Bar & Lounge offers a more comprehensive menu, plus it has a fully-stocked bar. The atmosphere is warm and cozy; there is a huge fireplace, and the décor is eclectic – lots of antique posters, skis, snowshoes, game boards, skates – just look up toward the ceiling and at the walls. Both the Fireside Grill and Copper Kettle are open seven days a week. No reservations taken – you may have to wait for a table for a few minutes. The main dining room – The Restaurant @ Bryce is casually elegant – linens and votives on the tables, gorgeous fireplace and a view that will stop traffic. Ask for a table at the windows and watch night skiing. The Restaurant is open Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday Brunch is served (only during ski season) – reservations are a must during ski season. What don’t we have? A hotel. That does not mean that there aren’t accommodations. There are several hotels within 20-30 minutes of the resort and local real estate companies that have private homes, chalets, townhouses, and condos in a rental pool. Several timeshare companies work with local management companies that oversee their accommodations as well. Racing at Bryce Resort Doug Grayson on the race course at Bryce Resort.
A
n Interview with Doug Grayson, Marketing Director and Race Manager at Bryce
Resort.
When did you first become acquainted with Bryce Resort and how? I started working for Bryce Resort as a ski instructor at 14 years old. I worked part-time during my early twenties while running a ski shop in Northern Virginia. Eight years ago, I returned to Bryce full time as the Coordinator of Winter Children’s Programs and started working in Race Operations under Bill Nimmo. When Bill retired, I was promoted to Race Manager and I have been running races for Bryce ever since. This 12 • Bryce Resort
past winter, I was also given a new role as Director of Marketing for Bryce Resort but I still plan on working with the Race Department as much as possible!
Did you learn to ski at Bryce? I grew up in Northern Virginia, so the resort my parents took us to was Liberty in Pennsylvania. I was three and a half years old when I started skiing but my parents took us to several different resorts throughout the area as we (my brother and I) grew up. In my junior racing years, I raced at another resort, but my brother raced for Bryce during his junior racing years.

The Mid-Atlantic and Southeast region are surprisingly strong and not what people would geographically think of when they hear the words “Snowsports Racing.” We compete well against other racers in the area. We also make sure that racing is a fun activity for all of our racers.
Have kids who have gone through the Bryce racing programs gone on to more specialized racing schools, programs? Many racers have moved on to larger, racing-focused schools and training programs in the Northeastern and Western parts of the United States. Through our partnerships with these academies, we are able to evaluate and help progress students that would like to pursue their career further. In addition, many colleges and universities including James Madison University (which trains at Bryce every Wednesday and Thursday night throughout the season, feel free to come and watch) have great Snowsports programs and compete throughout January, February and March for a shot at a National title.

Patsy Cline Exhibition Extended at Winchester’s Museum of the Shenandoah Valley
T
he exhibition Becoming Patsy Cline is the story of local girl Virginia "Ginny" Patterson Hensley before she became music icon Patsy Cline, the Shenandoah Valley’s most globally recognized personality and an American music legend. The exhibit at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has already proven to be so popular that museum officials recently announced it will be held over until July 6, 2014. Acknowledged by many as the most popular and influential female country singer in recording history, Patsy Cline (1932–1963) was the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Despite a career that was cut short by her tragic death at the age of 30, Patsy Cline recorded 102 songs and three, fulllength albums. Her recordings have sold millions of copies worldwide; she has a star on Hollywood Boulevard and her own stamp with the U.S. Postal Service. Patsy Cline also has 22 • Bryce Resort
received numerous posthumous honors and has been the subject of biographies, musicals, plays, and a feature film. Fifty years after her death, the popularity of her hit recordings, such as “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” and “Sweet Dreams,” endures today. Though Patsy Cline lived only 30 years, she spent most of her life in the Shenandoah Valley. There she dreamed of becoming a professional singer and began to realize that dream. Organized by the MSV in partnership with Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc. (CPC), Becoming Patsy Cline uses objects, rare photographs, video and audio recordings, and clothing -- much of which is on firsttime public display -- to illustrate Patsy Cline’s Shenandoah Valley story. The exhibition describes the singer’s family history, examines her early influences, and introduces the people whose support and guidance helped Patsy realize her dream. According to MSV Executive Northern Shenandoah Travel Guide
Director Dana Hand Evans, Becoming Patsy Cline is the most ambitious exhibition the MSV has organized to date. Evans notes that the Museum has wanted to tell Patsy Cline’s Shenandoah Valley story since opening in 2005 and adds that the exhibition has been three years in the making. Becoming Patsy Cline is the first museum exhibition to focus primarily on the singer’s early years. Filling the MSV’s newly redesigned, 2,600-square-foot Changing Exhibitions Gallery, it is also the largest display about Patsy Cline ever presented in her hometown of Winchester. Evans credits the Museum’s partnership with Winchester-based CPC and the support of Patsy Cline’s husband Charlie
Dick and their son and daughter, Randy Dick and Julie Fudge, as key elements in making the groundbreaking exhibition possible. Evans also notes that the MSV received critical underwriting support for Becoming Patsy Cline from Grove’s Winchester Harley–Davidson, Shenandoah Country Q102, and Winchester Printers, Inc. The not-for-profit CPC organization, which owns and operates the Patsy Cline Historic House in Winchester, has provided its extensive collection of artifacts for display in Becoming Patsy Cline. In addition, members of the singer’s family have loaned objects, clothing, and rare photographs to the MSV for the exhibition.

Traditions of Old Hill Cider
D
elicious and natural, familiar and flavorful, the American tradition of hard cider is back in the Shenandoah Valley courtesy of Old Hill Cider, and it’s better than ever. In the early days of this nation, hard cider was commonly enjoyed by many Americans, with as many as 1 in 9 of America’s farms using cider presses to produce the flavorsome beverage. That custom may have changed in the early 20th century with Prohibition, but a growing number of American apple-growers are reviving the tradition of cider26 • Bryce Resort

making, enjoying its delicious appeal anew thanks to cideries like Old Hill Cider. Old Hill Cider is the most recent addition to Showalter’s Orchard in the Shenandoah Valley where The Showalter family has been growing apples on their Old Hill for more than 40 years. Based in Timberville, Old Hill Cider is the Shenandoah Valley’s first such cidery. Cidermaker, Shannon Showalter, crafts ciders in innovative ways that early American cidermakers would be proud to serve and enjoy. Using carefully selected apples of heirloom cider-specific varieties, their artisan hard cider is made from 100% apple juice with no additives or back-sweetening.
