Report on Giving 2021–22 2

DEAR BRYN MAWR COMMUNITY,

Thank you for the extraordinary generosity you demonstrated during the 2021–22 school year. We are humbled by your support and bring you this Report on Giving with hearts that are not only glad but overflowing with gratitude!

Each year the Report on Giving gives us the opportunity to reflect on all that we have accomplished during the last school year. After almost two years of gathering remotely, we were excited to welcome so many of you back to campus for events such as our Visionary Leaders fall reception, parent programs, student concerts and productions, and Alumnae Weekend. The chance to connect with so many of you in person at these events certainly was a highlight of our year.

Your philanthropy allows us to dream big on behalf of our students and faculty. The Fund for Bryn Mawr remains our highest fundraising priority, as it provides immediate, flexible support for the educational experience of Bryn Mawr students each and every day. In 2021–22, 1,446 alumnae, parents, grandparents, employees, and friends contributed $1,589,024 in unrestricted gifts and an additional $156,008 in restricted gifts to The Fund for Bryn Mawr. Unrestricted gifts to The Fund for Bryn Mawr allow us to hire exceptional teachers, support the ambitions of every student, and provide experiences that advance our longstanding mission of inspiring passion for intellectual curiosity.

We are especially grateful this year to have received the largest outright gift in school history. Through a bequest to Bryn Mawr, Susanne Eck Higinbothom ‘49 and her late husband William donated $2.5 million to Bryn Mawr to support the expansion of student services in the Middle School, as well as to fund renovations and updates to the existing Middle School spaces. You can read more about Alexandra Chissell ‘98, our new Middle School Learning Specialist, on page 9, to see how this generous gift will impact today’s students.

Thank you for investing in Bryn Mawr. Your support makes a tangible difference and assures that we continue to inspire our students and equip them with the necessary tools and skills to lead considered and consequential lives. We are thankful and proud to be part of this extraordinary community.

Report on Giving

2021-22

The Board of Trustees welcomed four new members during 2021–22. Here, they reflect on the year’s school‑wide theme With Hearts That Are Glad

SANDRA Y. CHO, MD ’92, P’26, ’28

“Over the last few years it has made my heart glad to know that, despite uncertainty and change, Bryn Mawr has risen to the challenge and stayed true to its mission. I was reassured by its outstanding response to the worst of the pandemic. I have also witnessed a deep focus from leadership, staff, teachers, students, and parents grappling with how to create a more inclusive school community. I love that the students have role models who demonstrate the exact kind of resilience and ethical decision-making that Bryn Mawr aims to instill.”

NICOLE FOSTER ’02

“What makes my heart glad is that even as we keep pace with ever-evolving technology, academic standards, and the challenges of everyday life, what has not changed about Bryn Mawr is the feeling of home it brings. And while stepping on campus can create that sense of home, it is more than that. It is a home where everyone extends a helping hand, where differences are celebrated and encouraged, where it is expected for you to be bold, to challenge, to always ask why, but most importantly to live out loud. A home where your mind, body, and spirit will always be enough. And as a larger community we extend that sentiment wherever we go. It is that feeling of home that is even more powerful and impactful than all accomplishments we have achieved along the way. It is what we do for each other and for others that makes Bryn Mawr timeless and holds a special place in my heart.”

KIANA HEBRON ’95

“What makes my heart glad about Bryn Mawr is that we consistently and collectively lean into the work required to make our community a more equitable, inclusive, safe, and loving one. I am proud to sit on such a diverse board of dynamic individuals who are deeply committed to the mission of the school and maintaining our legacy of continued excellence. I am especially happy when I visit campus, as a visible, active alum, and see other Black girls frolicking about, feeling confident and empowered with a stellar education, supported by meaningful friendships and top-notch faculty and staff. It makes my heart so full in the moment that they realize that I am them, and they are me.”

TOM SPIES P’94; GP’27

“What makes my heart glad about Bryn Mawr is, at day’s end, a smiling cheerful greeting from my granddaughter with stories that tickled her imagination.”

CLASS OF ’49 ALUMNA LEAVES HISTORIC BEQUEST

A generous $2.5 million bequest from the estate of Susanne Eck Higinbothom ’49 and William Higinbothom—the largest outright gift in Bryn Mawr’s 137-year history—will support the expansion of student support services in the Middle School and help fund some renovations to the existing Middle School spaces.

“With this gift, Susanne and Bill wanted to ensure that all students feel supported, known, and encouraged, particularly in their middle school years.”

Susanne Eck attended Bryn Mawr from kindergarten through her graduation in 1949. Her nephew, Eben Eck, says his aunt’s Bryn Mawr days were an “important part of her life, and among her happiest times.” In recognition of this extraordinary gift, the North Building, one of the anchor buildings on Bryn Mawr’s 26-acre campus, will be renamed the William and Susanne Eck Higinbothom ’49 Building.

“Susanne spent her formative years at Bryn Mawr and felt very connected to the Bryn Mawr community while she was a student and throughout the rest of her life,” said family attorney Jon Eisner, who worked with the Higinbothoms for nearly 20 years. “With this gift, Susanne and Bill wanted to ensure that all students feel supported, known, and encouraged, particularly in their middle school years, as it is a time of remarkable academic, social, and personal growth.”

Susanne was a member of the Ex Solo Ad Solem Society, a group of generous donors who have included Bryn Mawr in their estate planning as a meaningful way to leave a lasting legacy while ensuring the school’s mission reaches the next generation of students.

“It is our profound honor to carry out the wishes of the Higinbothoms and preserve their legacy at The Bryn Mawr School,” said Sue Sadler, Head of School. “This generous gift reflects the lasting impact that Bryn Mawr had on Susanne’s life, the support she felt from her teachers and classmates, and above all else, the Higinbothoms’ deep belief in the power of a transformative education.”

Report on Giving 2021–22 8

MEET THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING SPECIALIST: ALEXANDRA CHISSELL ’98

Thanks to a transformational bequest from the estate of Susanne Eck Higinbothom ’49 and William Higinbothom, Bryn Mawr is expanding student support services in the Middle School. Alexandra Chissell ’98 is returning to Bryn Mawr to take on this new role. Tell us more about your new role.

As the new Middle School Learning Specialist, I will be supporting students, grades 6–8, in the areas of math and English via one-on-one consultations, appointments, small group instruction, and homework labs. I’ll also be co-teaching Bryn Mawr’s Study Skills class.

What brought you back to Bryn Mawr?

My dear friend Farah Hinds Evans ’98, P’19, director of student support services and Upper School counselor, reached out to me about joining her team. She knew of my experience working as a special educator for Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) and my passion for supporting all students in achieving academic success. After 17 years with BCPS, I am excited to be returning to my alma mater and supporting Middle School students in increasing their personal agency so that they may confidently achieve their academic goals.

What inspires you about working with middle schoolers?

Middle school is an exciting time because students are becoming critical thinkers, learning to express themselves, taking on more responsibilities, both at home and at school, challenging preconceived notions, and exploring their identity.

What are your goals in this new role?

My hope is to support Bryn Mawr middle schoolers in achieving their academic and individual goals, making learning fun and building a groundwork that will support them in their future academic and life experiences. In my experience, achieving excellence is more likely, more sustainable, and more rewarding, when balanced attention is paid to one’s emotional, mental, physical, social, and spiritual needs.

HONORING A LEGACY: ANNE POTTER ’72 AND THE BLAIR D. STAMBAUGH AWARD

Blair Stambaugh was one of the youngest headmistresses in North America when she came to Bryn Mawr in 1973, but that didn’t stop her from paving the way for big achievements. During her tenure, Bryn Mawr established the Little School, formalized coordinated classes with Gilman School, developed a sound financial foundation, and focused on building a strong community through alumnae outreach. On the occasion of Stambaugh’s departure in 1980, the Board of Trustees created an award in her name to recognize the member of faculty or staff who has contributed the most to the overall welfare and well-being of the school community.

During Ms. Stambaugh’s term as headmistress, Anne Potter ’72 served as Bryn Mawr’s alumnae director, which helped launch her career in development and fundraising. As a member of the Ex Solo Ad Solem Society and inspired by her personal and professional connections to Blair, Anne decided to direct her planned gift towards the Blair D. Stambaugh Award.

“Blair had the foresight to create a development office and gave me the opportunity to learn fundraising and alumnae relations, connecting graduates to the school,” Anne said. “I chose to support this existing fund in Blair’s honor as it allows me to celebrate within her lifetime her contributions to Bryn Mawr, mentorship of me, and our friendship.”

Since 1981, the Blair D. Stambaugh Award has been given annually at Founders Day. The 2021–22 recipient, Dean of Students Emily Fetting ’02, was honored for her “extraordinary combination of unparalleled organizational skill and deep personal empathy” as she takes part in countless activities and groups on campus in her role.

“I love to give back and engage with the Bryn Mawr community because it's like home to me. Nothing feels better than pulling up to the Gordon Building for an Alumnae Board meeting. The feeling of being on campus is nostalgic and heartwarming to me. It makes me proud to be a Mawrtian.”
Report on Giving 2021–22 16
–Toya Hawkins Bell ’95

THE DAISY SOCIETY RECOGNIZES CONSECUTIVE GIVING

Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Bryn Mawr’s success, providing collective and consistent support to ensure the school can carry out its historic mission. In recognition of this important commitment, the Daisy Society was established in 2022 to honor consecutive giving of five years or more. Gifts of any amount to The Fund for Bryn Mawr are counted towards Daisy Society membership. Consecutive years of giving are counted by fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. Donors qualify for membership upon their fifth consecutive fiscal year of giving.

Members of The Daisy Society are among the school’s most committed philanthropic champions who lead by example year after year.

CYNTHIA WILLIAMS BALLARD ’47, P’76

Cynthia Williams Ballard ’47 has many titles at Bryn Mawr, including alumna, past parent (to Holly Ballard Krueger ’76) and former employee of the Admissions Office. She is also a loyal and consistent donor to the school; in fact, Cynthia has been giving back to Bryn Mawr every year without fail since the school started maintaining donor records in 1982, and likely even longer than that!

“I have a lot of connections with Bryn Mawr, and I’ve always wanted to support in whatever way I can. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes it’s less, but it’s what I can,” Cynthia said.

Cynthia was a member of the Admissions Office team from 1969–1991, where she worked with prospective Lower School families. During her tenure, she encouraged families to care “about what Bryn Mawr stands for—appreciate the tradition, the values, and the expectation of each student’s best effort,” she told the alumnae magazine Communiqué back in 1977. It is these tenets she supports each year with her gift to the school.

Cynthia is keenly aware of the benefits of a Bryn Mawr education and believes that “if you got anything from your time at Bryn Mawr, you will want to give back to Bryn Mawr.”

JULIE LIU ’19

Julie Liu ’19 left China when she was just 14 years old, embarking on her own without her friends or family. She joined Bryn Mawr two years later as a junior, jumping into the school community ready to take advantage of all that Bryn Mawr has to offer. As a rising senior at the University of Maryland, Julie has relied on the Bryn Mawr alumnae network while she pursues her goal of becoming a doctor.

“As a young immigrant, I could never have imagined becoming a doctor in the United States without the extensive resources and opportunities Bryn Mawr provided,” she said. “It is Bryn Mawr and all of the alumnae that made my dream of pursuing medicine come true. And it is why I give back to the Bryn Mawr community every year.”

Julie first utilized the alumnae network during her senior year at Bryn Mawr when she shadowed Dr. Meg Gerstenblith ’95 in the dermatology department at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Julie also benefited from the mentorship of Dr. Kate Deanehan ’95 in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital. When the pandemic limited in-person opportunities, Dr. Gerstenblith continued mentoring Julie and introduced her to Annie Wu ’07 who is pursuing an MD-PhD at Hopkins.

These invaluable connections inspire Julie to give back to Bryn Mawr, which she has done consistently since graduation. “Even though the amount of donation we can give back as young alumnae may be small, it has a significant meaning to the school.” Through this support, Julie knows she is helping Bryn Mawr “raise the next generation of students, scholars, and leaders by building an even stronger network.”

know that we value their education. When our oldest granddaughter chose Bryn Mawr four years ago, she asked us to split our gift between athletics and diversity, and we have seen her take tremendous advantage, becoming her extraordinary self: a critical thinker with strong relationships with several teachers, as well as an enthusiastic lacrosse team player. Now a second granddaughter will join, so [we] will be upping our gift!”

ENDOWMENT SPOTLIGHT: ELLA SPEER COLHOUN AND ELIZABETH ATKINSON REYNOLDS FUND Each year on Founders Day, the Bryn Mawr community gathers to reflect on the enduring mission of the school and to thank the dedicated faculty and staff who carry that vision forward each day. Several awards are given annually, and students erupt in cheers for their teachers as the winners are revealed. This past year, Lower School teacher Moneshia Davis was honored with an award from the Ella Speer Colhoun and Elizabeth Atkinson Reynolds Fund. The award recognizes a quality that typifies independent school teaching at its best: a dedication to young people as whole human beings beyond the scope and measurements of classroom performance. Moneshia certainly fits that description. In addition to her work as a Lower School physical education teacher, Moneshia coaches Middle School volleyball and basketball as well as Upper School softball, serves as her division’s DEI Liaison, and leads the Middle Grades Partnership program each summer. “I know that those things matter,” said Moneshia. “I don’t do it for recognition, but knowing that my community sees the time, energy, and effort that goes into each activity makes me know that this community values my efforts.”

The award winner is selected by the Head of School in consultation with the Division Directors to recognize dedication to helping students beyond the classroom walls.

“We are a school first, but this school also understands that the needs of our students extend beyond the classroom, to helping them find a love of fitness, knowing the importance of teamwork, and helping them be fully prepared for the next part of their journeys,” said Moneshia. “Being supported in my work for them helps me be fully present and excited to help them every day.”

“Our daughters were educated, motivated, and championed by a faculty and staff that we believe to be unparalleled. The passion and enthusiasm that each teacher brings to the classroom creates an environment of ‘joyful rigor’ that enables each Bryn Mawr girl to succeed in her pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts.”

“We are pleased to show our support for our granddaughters by donating to Bryn Mawr. Our daughter selected the school for her daughters because, as an alumna, she felt strongly that Bryn Mawr provides the vital tools to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Bryn Mawr has evolved over the years to reflect the current times, but what remains is its unwavering commitment to strong academics, as well as critical personal support for each individual student when needed. We feel confident that our granddaughters will mature into caring, successful, compassionate, and productive people!”

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: CLASS OF 1996 FUND

Academic excellence may be the cornerstone of a Bryn Mawr education, but the Class of 1996 Fund recognizes the full Bryn Mawr experience goes well beyond the classroom—from the fifth grade trip to Echo Hill to sophomore class rings, to athletic trips and private music lessons. Several endowed funds exist to support non-academic experiences for any girls who may need some extra financial assistance, but the Class of 1996 Fund was established to specifically support Black students if that help is needed.

The fund was created by 13 members of the class in celebration of their 25th reunion in 2021. Planning a major reunion during a global pandemic, coupled with racial justice movements across the country, impacted how the Class of 1996 wanted to direct their gift to the school.

As Michelle Monroe ’96 said, “Scholarships don’t cover incidentals. Say you need new cleats because your feet grew between grades and so soccer cleats that fit in grade nine don’t fit in grade 10,” she continued. “Those small incidentals aren’t always thought of.”

Michelle said inclusion is “a big buzzword right now and inclusion oftentimes at a school like Bryn Mawr is financial inclusion. So if we can do our little part to include everyone financially then we are winning. That is part of the mission of Bryn Mawr, to support girls and their learning and the richness of their experience.”

These Class of ’96 classmates are excited to see the impact of this fund and hope that many in the Bryn Mawr community will join with their support.

Betty and her classmates are inspired by Barbara’s passion and leadership in establishing the Class of 1961 Scholarship. “She’s her own person, she always was. She always had great appreciation for what she had at Bryn Mawr and valued what she got,” Betty shared. “Now she has the means to support today’s students…I hope others join her with their support.”

Hardy Spence ’61 appreciates Barbara’s efforts and recognizes the forward momentum of the school, but also sees the aspects of Bryn Mawr that have remained the same. “The faculty, the curriculum are just excellent and that’s why you go—to learn. I think Bryn Mawr’s value system and encouragement to grow are so important,” she said.

Thank You, Bryn Mawr Parents!

Special thanks to all of the members of the Parents’ Association (PA) Executive Board, Class Parents, and committed volunteers who contributed their time, effort, and enthusiasm to make the school year events engaging for our families. A special thank you to President Sherita Harrison P’22 for completing a three-year term, and for leading the PA with unity and confidence.

With hearts that were glad, our PA worked to provide families with opportunities to participate in the life of the school, both virtually and in person. Together, we made homemade pasta and meditated. We enriched our own scope of knowledge with conversations about cryptocurrency, financial planning, childhood anxiety, and parenting tweens (courtesy of expert speakers). We participated in MLK service work and discussed the structural inequalities of America and other important DEI topics. We showed appreciation for school employees with gifts and treats, and we closed out the year by enjoying one another’s company at our first official social gathering in two years at Union Craft Brewing.

Thank you for your dedication

65

Thank You, Volunteers!

It would not be possible to reach our fundraising goals without the tireless efforts of our volunteers. You make an immediate and lasting impact on the quality of education provided for your daughters and her peers. You ensure your alma mater’s ability to educate girls who are academically engaged, inquisitive, and confident. You all play a key role in helping to create a valuable network for the girls that will benefit them over a lifetime. You help make the Bryn Mawr experience transformative for every student, every teacher, every day.
