SUE SADLER HEAD OF SCHOOL
DEAR BRYN MAWR COMMUNITY, Thank you for the extraordinary generosity you demonstrated during the 2022–23 school year. We enthusiastically share with you this year’s Report on Giving, which contains stories of the impact and opportunities your philanthropy supports for students and faculty at Bryn Mawr. What a year it has been! Together, we launched our ambitious new strategic plan, Bryn Mawr, Beyond; renovated Middle School spaces and the turf field, claimed three championship titles, restarted global programs, welcomed our first cohort of students in Bridges at Bryn Mawr, and celebrated Bryn Mawr’s ranking as the #1 college prep school in Maryland and being named a 2023 Top Workplace. None of this would be possible without the loyal and spirited generosity of alumnae, parents, grandparents, employees, and friends. We are thrilled to share that we have surpassed our goal for The Fund for Bryn Mawr, doubled giving among our employees, and established the Daisy Society to recognize and honor our most loyal and dedicated donors. This year, our collective community contributed $1,642,004 in unrestricted gifts and an additional $180,498 in restricted gifts to The Fund for Bryn Mawr. Also, compared to last year, we increased our overall number of donors from 1,446 to 1,514 donors! We are especially grateful this year to have received a leadership gift to help permanently endow the Dorothy Clayborne Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color. You can read more about that program from one of our Clayborne Fellows on page 9 to see how this generous gift is impacting today’s students. You can also read more about how our endowed faculty funds are supporting a new signature program for fifth graders on page 50. Your gifts are truly making a difference! Thank you for making Bryn Mawr your philanthropic priority. We are grateful for your support and engagement, which allows us to hire exceptional teachers, support the ambitions of every student, and provide experiences that advance our longstanding mission of preparing young women to lead considered and consequential lives. On behalf of everyone here, thank you!

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WELCOMED ITS NEW MEMBERS IN 2022–23 The Board of Trustees welcomed six new members during 2022–23. Here, they reflect on the year’s schoolwide theme UP and were asked: What lifts you UP?
KARLA AGHAJANIAN P’26 (PA PRESIDENT): It’s the positive relationships! For 13 years, my daughter has nurtured relationships with friends, faculty, teammates, coaches and mentors, and is now seen as a mentor to younger students. It gives me great hope for Bryn Mawr’s future.
ERIC BROTMAN P’28: What lifts me up is the energy on Bryn Mawr’s campus, the way students blend academic excellence with joy, and the tremendous sense of community not only among students, but also their families. As a BMS parent for eight years now, I’ve had the privilege to watch this amazing group of girls grow into remarkable young women with unlimited potential. And now as trustee, I have experienced the dedication, commitment and drive that each member brings to the board and look forward to working together to lift Bryn Mawr even higher in the years to come.
ELIZABETH HIMELFARB HURWITZ ’93, P’26,’31: I get my lift from those moments when the Bryn Mawr classroom meets the world. The other day, I took my fourth grader and two of her Lower School friends to the Baltimore Museum of Art, and they stopped to examine a mosaic. Almost at once, their little mouths dropped open, and they began squealing, “Tessellation! Tessellation!” A Bryn Mawr geometry lesson had spilled out of the museum, down Charles Street, and all the way to the ancient Near East.
JASMINE SHAH P’34: What lifts me up about Bryn Mawr is walking around campus and feeling the energy—from the teachers’ passion for education and genuine care for their students’ well-being and growth; to the administration’s forward-thinking commitment to equity and inclusion and relentless drive to achieve excellence; to the camaraderie and love the students have for one another; and finally, to the extended Bryn Mawr community and the sense of being part of a large, close-knit family.
EMMY MATHEWS WACHTMEISTER ’07: It lifts me UP to see my Report on Giving 2022–23
daughter’s excitement in the Little School as she goes to Bryn Mawr every
4
day. As a parent, it’s the best feeling to see her happy, learning new things, and already building a foundation for a considered and consequential life.
KATIE WALSH P’34, ’36 (FACULTY REP): Bryn Mawr lifts me up daily because I’m surrounded by people working to be their best selves. Students, teachers, leaders and staff all work with energy and focus for the benefit of not just the school, but for the larger community. I feel lucky to be surrounded by so many thoughtful, motivated individuals, who aspire to grow intellectually and in kindness.
WELCOME RHONDA SMITH WRIGHT ’95 CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2023-2026
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST HOPE FOR BRYN MAWR AS THE INCOMING CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES? My greatest hope is that we continue to inspire philanthropy among our Bryn Mawr community and secure this campus and unique academic experience for generations of girls to come. The school is so much more than it has been and/or even what it is today. Like all of its students, the potential for greatness is endless.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BRYN MAWR’S GREATEST STRENGTH? Aside from providing an excellent academic experience and community of artists, athletes and thinkers, there’s an ability that Bryn Mawr has to connect and bond individuals. I feel it deeply in my Class of 1995, but also now, as an alumna with others I did not know as a student or with whom we were not even students during the same years. And while the enduring campus has landmarks, like the Graduation Garden and owl gate that most students can easily point out, even the Bryn Mawr Online students have bonded in a joyful way that seems uniquely Bryn Mawr.
Rhonda Smith Wright on her graduation day in 1995
AS AN ALUMNA OF THE SCHOOL, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AS A STUDENT? Paper-thin daisy cookies and lemonade on Founders Day, lemon sticks on Gym Drill day, and one could always count on fresh, sticky baklava at the Fourth Grade International Bazaar. Hearing my friend and classmate Tameika Lunn ’95 sing “One Moment In Time” at our eighth grade graduation, the day we received our class rings and having them turned 95 times. It’s pretty difficult to distill eight years into one memory, but there’s nothing like food and a classic Whitney Houston tune to make a lasting impression.
TELL US ONE THING THAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE ABOUT YOU. As an Upper Schooler, I unsuccessfully auditioned for Dayseye. But as a young alumna when I’d return for Thanksgiving Convocation and Dayseye alumnae were invited to join the stage to sing “Jerusalem,” I would sneak in with the altos and sing my pitchy heart out (although those who know me well will not be surprised by that at all).

A NEW MILESTONE FOR THE DOROTHY CLAYBORNE FELLOWSHIP FOR ASPIRING TEACHERS OF COLOR Bryn Mawr is one of the most diverse independent schools in Baltimore, with 49.5% of students identifying as students of color; however, only 28% of faculty identify as people of color. It has long been a priority to diversify the teaching faculty to better reflect the various identities, experiences and voices of the student community. “Having a diverse faculty is important not only to students of color but to all students on our campus,” said Head of School Sue Sadler. “We recognize that excellence and diversity are synonymous.”
“We recognize that excellence and diversity are synonymous.” –Sue Sadler, Head of School
In that spirit, the Dorothy Clayborne Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color was launched in 2020 to help grow the number of faculty of color both at Bryn Mawr and at independent schools around the country. Now in its third year, four fellows have successfully completed the program, with one joining the full-time faculty at Bryn Mawr and two fellows teaching and coaching this academic year. Fellows have worked in Lower, Middle and Upper School divisions in a range of disciplines, including English, music and physical education. In addition to classroom work, fellows are involved in arts, athletics, clubs, diversity, equity and inclusion programs and service learning.
Report on Giving 2022–23
“We talk about windows and mirrors a lot,” said Tynaya Quickley, Assistant Director of the Lower School and lead Clayborne Mentor, “We talk about them a lot in literacy and books, but we also want students to see that in person. The more we help teachers of color see that they are not just needed, but wanted in these schools, that will directly impact all students in what they see and believe every person can be.”
8
The idea of representation is what resonated with leadership donor Dr. Mira Kautzky ’88. “Bryn Mawr literally never doubted that a girl could do anything because they do everything on campus. They lead clubs, they are the head of student government, the head of everything is a girl. It gets into your subconscious, you don’t doubt that it’s possible, because you’ve seen it. It is just as helpful when you see role models, leaders of color, running the school,” she said. Dr. Mira Kautzky ’88 and her husband Dr. Keith Flaherty pledged a gift of $500,000 to The Clayborne Fellowship. In making their generous gift, they challenged our Bryn Mawr community to step up and match it with an additional $500,000 to fully endow one Clayborne Fellow. A group of donors contributed a total of $400,000 and the remaining was contributed by the full Bryn Mawr community this fall. Ms. Sadler said, “It’s especially meaningful that our full community—alumnae, parents, employees, trustees and friends—united in support to endow this important initiative. The Clayborne Fellowship increases opportunities to introduce young teachers of color to independent school careers and, most importantly, opportunities for students to learn from teachers who bring diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to independent school classrooms.”
MEET ASHLEY JOHNSON
CLAYBORNE FELLOW AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER Ashley returned in 2023-2024 to Bryn Mawr for a second year serving as a Clayborne Fellow for Aspiring Teachers of Color. This year, she’s teaching two sections of sixth grade English. Here, she shares what she’s learned from her experience and how it’s prepared her for future success. What would you tell someone who’s never heard of the Clayborne Fellowship? This fellowship really transcends being a passive observer in a classroom, watching someone teach, and taking notes. I did very little of that, even from the start. My mentor, Katie Walsh, made it clear from the beginning that we were working together, and I am so grateful to her for that. Last year, I got to teach and learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment. I have gotten to take advantage of really incredible professional development opportunities that have helped me grow personally and professionally. This fellowship is specifically for aspiring teachers of color but it seeks to cultivate above all a sense of strong inner knowing, knowledge exchange, and community-building that transcends classroom work entirely. This program has changed my life in so many ways, and I am so much better for having been given the opportunity to explore myself and my work in this space. What is the biggest thing you learned through the Fellowship last year? There are meaningful experiences and valuable knowledge that I bring to my work that I can incorporate into my lessons, into my work outside of the classroom in the greater community. Learning to be confident not only as a teacher but as a person, generally speaking, entering a new profession in an unfamiliar environment, was a very important part of my journey last year. This year you are teaching independently; what will that be like? I am teaching two sections of sixth grade; though I’ll be working with two other teachers in the Middle School, they will largely be my own classes. I’m expected to create my own lessons, meet with students individually, and grade and evaluate student work and progress, among many other responsibilities. What initially drew you to Bryn Mawr? I was drawn to Bryn Mawr specifically because of what I felt was an authentic environment, one that practices what it preaches on every level. I felt this was a space for true growth, as a professional and as a person. What goals do you have for this year? Inside the classroom and out! I really want to continue to cultivate inner trust and confidence and practice that both in the classroom and in my roles beyond it as I work with the Middle School groups MOSAIC (Making Our School An Inclusive Community) and the Black Student Union. I also want to continue to build connections that will carry me into my work beyond Bryn Mawr. What has been a benefit of the Clayborne Fellowship? I am confident that my work at Bryn Mawr will continue to prepare me as a professional and nourish me into a stronger leader, and I feel strongly that this community supports my and my colleagues’ successes.

FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT: TWO ALUMNAE SUPPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATIONS Middle School students returned this fall to bright and refreshed common spaces and a new building name, Higinbothom Hall, thanks to the generosity of two Bryn Mawr alumnae. Following a $2.5 million bequest from the estate of Susanne Eck Higinbothom ’49 and William Higinbothom last year—the largest outright gift in school history—Bryn Mawr expanded student support services and made plans to renovate existing Middle School spaces. The school collaborated with alumna architect Patricia Rhee ’90, partner at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects in Los Angeles, who generously donated her time and talent to developing the concepts for the refreshed areas. In doing so, Rhee said it was important to preserve the feelings of “home, coziness and tradition” she felt when she was a Bryn Mawr student. The Middle School now features modern gathering spaces, collaborative work locations, an interactive whiteboard wall, and plenty of nooks where students can relax and recharge on the first and second floors of their building. “This is a full-circle Bryn Mawr story that highlights the power of our

multigenerational community,” said Sue Sadler, Head of School. “Thanks to
12
the generous philanthropy of our alumnae—both through an extraordinary bequest and incredible professional expertise—the everyday lives of our Middle School students will be enhanced and enriched.” In recognition of the bequest, the North Building, one of the anchor buildings on Bryn Mawr’s 26-acre campus, was renamed the William and Susanne Eck Higinbothom ’49 Hall when it reopened this fall.
The photos that appear on the front and back cover of this report were taken at the dedication of Higinbothom Hall in September 2023.
Q&A WITH PATRICIA RHEE ’90 Patricia Rhee ’90 is an American Institute of Architects Fellow and Partner at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects in Los Angeles, where she has practiced for more than 20 years. She generously designed the new Higinbothom Hall spaces pro bono as a way to give back to Bryn Mawr. How did you get involved with this project? I first met Sue Sadler when she was on the West Coast several years ago and we stayed in touch. Two years ago, during my appointment as the Kea Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland’s architecture school, I was able to visit Bryn Mawr for the first time since graduating. Being on campus brought back so many memories; it was a nice feeling of homecoming! I was happy to offer any advice for projects on campus. How did your own Bryn Mawr experience inform your work on this design? I lived far from Baltimore when I was a student, carpooling with several others, including Katy Dallam ’73 who was our driver and my dear advisor. I often had to wait until 5 or 6 p.m. before heading home, so I got to know the campus well during that time, roaming the beautiful grounds. Bryn Mawr’s campus, with its historic buildings and set within a leafy residential neighborhood made a deep impression on me that I recall now as an architect designing campuses and campus buildings. A fond memory from my time at Bryn Mawr is the way students made use of the nooks and crannies within the existing campus and buildings. We’d hide away in these “in-between” spaces or use them to hang out with a few friends. I loved these idiosyncratic spaces on campus and seeing how they exist to this day. You really carried that forth in design too. Yes, that feeling of “home”—that’s something I remember distinctly from my Bryn Mawr days. The classroom where I had French with Madame Brecht in the Garrett Building—facing the lawn, its grand wood double-hung windows with sunlight coming in, red geraniums in the window box and a fireplace in the room…there was a feeling of coziness and tradition at the same time. I think that is a quality within the architecture of the Bryn Mawr campus that is precious…it’s the opposite of “institutional.” What do you hope this project brings to the student experience? The goal established by Sue and her team was to create warm, inviting, and welcoming spaces at a variety of scales. Spaces where large groups of students could comfortably gather, but also where one person can find a spot for quiet time or be with a friend or two. Spaces that are as diverse as the personalities that inhabit them. I hope we achieved that. What does it mean to you to be a part of Bryn Mawr’s future? Why did you want to give back in this way? I am eager to participate in Bryn Mawr’s future and utilize my abilities and skills however best I can, not only to make the experience for others as meaningful as it was for me but to show that I believe in what the school stands for. Looking back at the different places I’ve learned at, each place had different things to offer, but I feel closest to Bryn Mawr. The role models, the strong women around me, knowing nothing was impossible—it was a unique ecosystem. My years at Bryn Mawr were formative for me; I didn’t necessarily appreciate it at the time but recognized this more deeply later as an adult when I reflect on my career and community engagement.

“This trip showed me how I could be in the world, not just in the Bryn Mawr or even Baltimore bubble, and I think it made me more excited about leaving home and traveling to more places.” –Beth Hetrick ’23 Each year, The Global Education Program sponsors a range of global education experiences that also include opportunities for service and language immersion. The program instills a deeper understanding of and appreciation for cultures and peoples around the world, as well as providing chances for our students to continue to experience a diversity of opinions, experiences and backgrounds, which is an important part of our commitment to building diversity.

“The Peer Education Program allows for students to connect across grade levels and ages and helps to foster community at Bryn Mawr. Between teaching the younger students during our lessons and running into them around campus, it is gratifying to know that we are imparting important information that will help them to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.” –Olivia Zissel ’24
The Peer Education program provides Upper School students an opportunity to work with younger students to encourage positive relationships and healthy decision-making. The program is supported by the Christopher O’Neil Memorial Fund, created by Tom and Pam O’Neil in memory of their 17-year-old son, Christopher, who was killed in 1992 in an automobile accident involving a teenage drunk driver.

“I realized I had a real passion for ethics and philosophy after competing on the Ethics Bowl team for two years. The Edith Hamilton Scholars Program has transformed my passion into action within my community. I have been able to deeply explore ethics through readings of old philosophers and conversations with ethics professionals that I was able to connect with through the program director, Dr. Alice Waters. While the ability to explore numerous niches through clubs is not necessarily unique to Bryn Mawr, the opportunities in specialization and immersion in topics of interest are an extremely valuable aspect of the school that I will never forget.” –Grace Martin ’23
Inaugurated in 1999, The Edith Hamilton Scholars Program affords Bryn Mawr seniors an opportunity to pursue a unique course of study of particular interest to them while working with a mentor who has expertise relevant to the subject matter. Participation in the program is open to all rising seniors for which they receive neither credit nor grade, in addition to their regular academic courses. Scholars are chosen late in junior year through an application process, and following the completion of their project, each scholar delivers a convocation about their topic.

“I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the Elizabeth Sheridan Sinclair Chair for the Fine and Performing Arts. Teaching in the Bryn Mawr Middle School allows me to guide students who are in the midst of tremendous growth. They’re constantly discovering new physical capabilities and skills. They’re learning how to express themselves through movement. They feel the powerful connection of a group dancing as one. I hope I can instill the love and appreciation of dance in these kids that Mrs. Sinclair instilled in her own children years ago.” –Anne O’Brien, (Dance Teacher, Middle School Dance Company Director and 7th Grade Chief Advisor)
The Elizabeth Sheridan Sinclair Chair for the Fine and Performing Arts was established by the Sheridan Foundation in memory of one of Bryn Mawr’s longtime trustees and past parents, Betsy Sinclair. The Chair honors a member of the fine and performing arts faculty for their distinguished service in their field of the arts.

We hope that our gifts and our unified support of the school will enable the faculty, programming, facilities, and overall student life at Bryn Mawr to thrive—now and for years to come.” –Jane Lancaster and Lisa Warren, Lower School Fund for Bryn Mawr Chairs

LEAPING INTO FIFTH GRADE: A HIGHLIGHT ON SUMMER INNOVATION GRANTS At Bryn Mawr, summer is a time for faculty and staff to reflect, recharge and prepare for the upcoming school year. Each year, employees from across the school apply to be part of Bryn Mawr’s Summer Innovation Grant program, which provides a stipend for collaborative groups to engage in professional development over the summer months. Launched in 2016, Summer Innovation Grants have supported projects including the creation of e-textbooks by Upper School science teachers, developing Middle School’s multidisciplinary program Believing in Baltimore’s Best, several curricular reviews, and the expansion of Student Support Services’ programs and protocols. The program is supported by a group of endowed funds that focus on developing Bryn Mawr’s academic excellence. For the 2022-23 academic year, 16 summer grants were awarded to faculty, including a group focused on developing Bryn Mawr’s new fifth grade program titled LEAP, which stands for Leadership, Engagement, and Academic Preparation. The LEAP year program is designed to be a signature experience for fifth graders to build on their social-emotional and academic skills as they prepare for their next step—Middle School. Bryn Mawr’s unique campus layout and dedicated fifth grade spaces “up the hill” allow girls to experience growing independence as leaders of the Lower School, while establishing relationships and experiences with Middle School faculty and students. Fifth Grade Teacher Katherine Gilbert, Lower School Counselor Debbie Waranch, and Middle School Spanish Teacher Rebeccah Wish have been working with a committee to prepare for the launch of the program this past fall. Ms. Gilbert reflects, “It is my hope that fifth graders will leave this program with very fond memories, more confidence, and a better understanding of themselves as students and human beings.” Students will take part in unique experiences such as a fall leadership retreat, tween-focused leadership and wellness programming, digital citizenship education, the traditional Newbery Luncheon, admissions ambassador programs, and the fifth grade Capstone Play. The mission of the program states: Bryn Mawr’s distinctive fifth grade LEAP program empowers tweens to strengthen life and leadership skills, become positive collaborators and self-advocates, and establish strong foundations for joy, confidence and academic success. Gilbert goes on to reflect that, “It has been rewarding to work with such a talented group to explore what I believe is the best year of Lower School!”

“Cents and Sensibility is an amazing program on financial foundations, and going to New York City was a great finish! The opportunity to visit companies and ask questions about everything from college degrees to big city life. I enjoyed learning about the paths alumnae took in their careers, company culture and city history—especially since I love urban planning and design.” –Meredith Schatz ‘23 With the support of the Howard P. Colhoun Family Foundation, Bryn Mawr Upper School students follow a financial literacy curriculum covering personal finance, from investing and stock portfolios to careers in finance.
