WELCOME
THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AT BSAK
It is my absolute privilege and honour to welcome you to the Abu Dhabi Young Musician of the Year Competition 2023. Almost 170 students, from ages 6 to 18 will represent 35 schools and musical institutions from across Abu Dhabi in this week-long celebration of Youth Music. A wide range of repertoire will be explored as our students showcase Jazz, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, Opera, Romantic and Baroque Music, providing a veritable musical feast. We hope that this event will not only be seen as a competition, but more importantly as an opportunity to share and learn from each other, forge friendships and create memories. We also welcome our colleagues, friends, teachers, parents and community to our event and thank you for your continued support and commitment to our young people and their pursuit of Musical excellence.
This competition is not the vision of one person, but a culmination of a vast team of people with a variety of expertise. The ADYM committee is a collective of Music teachers across Abu Dhabi, who have dedicated their time to developing this competition and believe in the growth of Music in our community. This committee has led to the Abu Dhabi Music Teachers Federation, which enables us to support each other through discussions on opportunities for our students, ways of collaborating with each other as well as developing provision for professional development.
Within The British School
Al Khubairat we must thank and acknowledge our exceptional administrators, finance, marketing, IT, housekeeping, security and site teams. We are so incredibly grateful for everything you do for us, which goes far beyond your remit. You complete your work and support us with great pride, commitment and skill. I am also fully supported by my own Music Team within BSAK, which is a team of 19 exceptionally talented musicians in their own right, as well as inspiring and dedicated music educators. These wonderful people have walked by my side and enabled us to not only host this competition for the second year running, but also to provide an abundance of musical opportunities for our students on a daily basis. They are stage managing, organising sound and equipment, writing the computer programme used for communication, supervising students, breathing words of support and encouragement, making themselves fully available for the many last minute jobs which inevitably crop up when planning a competition of this stature. I am truly thankful to them all; the hours that they have devoted to this competition are truly staggering.
We would also like to express our gratitude to our Senior Leadership Team at BSAK who always champion Music and support us in our development and growth. A huge thank you to our esteemed adjudicators who have travelled far and wide to provide insightful feedback and make some incredibly tough decisions. We are truly grateful for your support for this year’s ADYM competition and know that you will guide and develop our performers to the best of your abilities.
I hope that every student will feel proud of their performances and enjoy this opportunity to showcase their talent. Celebrate each other and recognise the journey you have worked so hard to embark on. Enjoy the Music and grow from the experience.
