WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AT BSAK
A very warm welcome to this, the inaugural and slightly delayed, Abu Dhabi Young Musician! We are absolutely delighted that so many young musicians have chosen to take part in this week-long Festival of Music, particularly as we emerge from the pandemic which has been so catastrophic across the globe. It is of enormous personal pride that, despite all the challenges we have faced over the past few months, we are able to deliver what will be a truly momentous week of music-making in which musicians of all ages and abilities can share their love of music and their passion for performing. Yes there will be nerves, there will be disappointment, there will perhaps be some controversy (if experience of similar competitions is anything to go by), but let us not forget that for over two years now, musicians have simply not been given a stage on which to perform. Now is that chance to shine once again. This competition is a celebration of music bringing together young musicians from across the emirate of Abu Dhabi as well as their parents, teachers and supporters, developing links and friendships (and possibly rivalries?) which may last for years to come. From an initial concept, I am excited to see how the competition will develop in the coming years; I am confident that it will grow and evolve further to meet the needs of our young musicians as they progress through their school careers. I would personally like to thank all those who have had faith in this project over the past year and have enabled it to go ahead this week - the BSAK SLT, the organising committee, music teachers from across the city, our sponsors and our adjudicators. A special mention must go to Karen Mowat who has undertaken so much of the administration behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the competition. Finally, the most important people for whom this competition has been established - the musicians themselves; they and their teachers have worked through such challenging conditions over the past two years and have overcome so many hurdles to produce performances which, I am sure, will be of a phenomenal standard. Each and every competitor will represent their school or institution with pride and we are looking forward to witnessing their talents. Our esteemed adjudicators will provide thoughtful and insightful feedback on every performance and it is our hope that every single competitor will enjoy the experience and emerge from it an even better musician. Good luck to everyone involved this week - let this Festival, a true celebration of music, begin!

Ever since I was exposed to the vibrant and colourful realm of music, I have been transfixed with the electric guitar. From Hendrix to May to BB. King, all were able to transform a mere few pluckings of strings to an entire voice of their own, a unique squeal of delight as their fingers danced across the frets. Naturally, it has always been a fantastical dream to become even a fraction like these legends, and after 6 years playing in several Rock bands and a Jazz band, I am still gobsmacked at their revelry. I adore the guitar; it is an instrument I could never never tire of tinkering with, even when I am old and grey.

ALL ABOUT OUR
ADJUDICATORS MAYSSA KARAA
is the Artistic Director at Berklee College of Music’s new campus in Abu Dhabi. Berklee is known as the world’s pre-eminent institute of contemporary music, dance and theatre. She is also the Artistic Director of the Dubai Expo 2020 all female “Firdaus orchestra” initiative under the patronage of AR Rahman. With her captivating multi-octave voice and persuasive cross-cultural message, the vocalist and songwriter defines a new era of musical inclusion. Her songs tell of a journey connecting her origins in the ancient land of Lebanon to her adopted home of Los Angeles, California. You may identify the classically-trained singer’s voice from the hit film American Hustle, where her Arabic version of the Sixties classic “White Rabbit” was a standout track on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack album. She recently had a song produced by Oscar winner Indian megastar AR Rahman which rapidly climbed the charts in various countries and hit No. 1 on Apple Music India. Her full-length English solo debut album “Simple Cure” includes songs ranging from piano-based simplicity to epic electronic orchestration with a unique blend of American pop and middle eastern influences. International families might identify her as the ambassador of Sesame Street (Middle East edition: “IftahYa Simsim”) through “The Arabic Alphabet Song” that generated over 30M YouTube views so far.
