A Message From The Head Of Secondary, Mr Davis A Message From The Assistant Head, Ms Cooper Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 A Message From The Assistant Head : Sixth Form, Mr Oakes Sixth Form Newsletter Dates For Your Diary

MR NIGEL DAVIS HEAD OF SECONDARY I truly hope you enjoy reading this term’s newsletter; I know as parents we tend to flick straight to our child/children's year groups - but I would really recommend that you also look through the other year groups as well - to get a flavour of the incredible opportunities that are offered to all BSAK students. And please read to the very end - to the section of important dates for term two - as you can see, there is a huge amount going on next term too!

What strikes me as I read through the newsletter, is the amount of awareness raising the school does helping our students learn about and understand many things that will touch upon their adult lives; to prepare them to cope, and to contribute, as well as they can. This, added to the incredible range of opportunities, provides the ingredients of an amazing school experience. However, it is important to thank you, as parents - without your support and encouragement, then their attendance at these golden moments would be impossible.

A special mention to the UAE's National Day celebration at BSAK - every year the school community, from 54 different nationalities, comes together to celebrate the country in which we live - its journey, its successes, and its future. We are all truly blessed to call the UAE home.

It has been a wonderful term - one that has seen many high profile honours bestowed upon us as a school - with outstanding reports and 5 UAE ‘Best School’ awards.

These are wonderful to achieve, and we obviously feel that BSAK deserves the reputation it has within the Middle East and beyond; but honestly, the reason why staff stay is because of the enjoyment that they find in working with your children they are an absolute joy.

MS NICHOLA COOPER ASSISTANT HEAD Dear Parents, Earlier this term I wrote to everyone about how

important regular exercise is. In this terms Newsletter I wanted to share with you the outcome of Pink Day and go into a little more detail regarding the mind and body connection and how we can use this to improve mood.

PINK DAY AND “MOVE FOR MOVEMBER” CHALLENGE Students showed exceptional dedication and generosity towards Pink-tober, dressing in all shades of pink and raising over 7,000 AED for breast cancer awareness. BSAK also hosted an optional breast cancer awareness talk for young ladies from Year 9 and above. This was an incredibly successful workshop where students were given an opportunity to ask any questions they had regarding prevention, symptoms and risk. They also had the opportunity to feel different textures and consistencies and to identify the difference between soft and firm, and regular and irregular. This is directly relevant for self-examination of breasts and is an important skill to build on. We discussed symmetry and size also being important in examinations, and used different fruits to help demonstrate the differences.

In November, the students continued their dedication to raising awareness for health causes by participating in the "Move for Movember" 60-mile challenge. This initiative highlighted the importance of men's physical and mental health.

These awareness days have been supported by educational content within registration sessions.

MIND AND BODY CONNECTIONS In the assembly we discussed how sayings such as “having butterflies in your stomach” to describe being nervous and “being sick to the stomach” when discussing disgust, are rooted in Science.

For reference this is the assembly I used with Years 7-11 last term, it introduced them to the Mind Body Connection which is the link between a person's thoughts and feelings and their physical wellbeing.

When faced with negative emotions it is important that students know they can harness their mind-body connection.

Emotions do affect your physiology

In the short term holding on to negative emotions can cause an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, a decreased immune response, and fatigue. It can also affect you psychologically leading to things like self-sabotage, overreaction and decreased self esteem. In the long term it can increase risk of heart disease.

By taking part in physical activities they can promote increased wellbeing. These physical activities do not need to be huge, in fact one of my favorite suggestions is to …

Simply turn on their favorite music, shut the door and jump around. For those that aren’t keen on that idea there are further strategies, such as progressive muscle relaxation, that can be used.

MR MICHAEL EDGAR HEAD OF YEAR 7 I am extremely proud at the way the Year 7 cohort has acclimatised into the secondary school. This was most recently evident during our Year Group ‘Team Building and Outdoor Education’ Trip to Khorfakkan which was a huge success. I hope you enjoy the photos which give an insight into some of the activities we have been participating in this term.

YEAR 7 KHORFAKKAN TRIP

MISS EMMA HAND HEAD OF YEAR 8 As we bid farewell to the first term of this academic year, it's with immense pride and joy that we reflect on the incredible journey we've embarked upon together. Our Year 8 community has truly set the stage on fire, showcasing a dazzling array of talents, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.

YEAR 8’s IN OLIVER!

The highlight of the term was undoubtedly the spectacular school production that left us all spellbound. The creativity and dedication displayed by our budding actors, backstage wizards, and musical maestros were nothing short of awe-inspiring. It was a testament to the vibrant spirit that defines our students.

Our very own Sam Boucher led the show as Oliver.

The excitement didn't stop there! Our formidable house competitions brought out the competitive spirit in everyone.

Whether it was on the sports field, in the classrooms, or during various challenges, the students’ passion and teamwork shone brightly, creating an electrifying atmosphere throughout the school - from lip sync and tug of war to the Rock, Paper, Scissors showdown.

HOUSE COMPETITIONS

term Year 8 have taken part in HYDRATION This a 4 week hydration challenge CHALLENGE as part of our MELS physical and Mental health module. Students have been keeping a hydration log and monitoring how much water they are consuming daily. Each week they reflect on this as a class to see who is meeting the daily requirements. Hopefully students will see the benefits that drinking water has on their overall health.

MUSIC CONCERTS

YEAR 8 LEADERSHIP TEAM Well done to our Form Reps: Ahmed (CE), Rayana (GR), Naser (HY), Shrishti (PH), Elise (CH) and Advay (PE) who is also our Year Rep.

SPORT CHAMPS

We are looking forward to seeing what work you do for Y8 this year.

Music echoed through the halls as our talented musicians took center stage in multiple concerts this term, showcasing a variety of different talents.

And let's not forget the adrenaline-fueled sporting fixtures and tournaments this term.

From being crowned the U13 ADISSA champions in netball and football, two Swim Gala wins, crowned champions in the rugby DC 7’s and a successful string of cricket victories,

the students’ sportsmanship and dedication were truly commendable this term.

As we look back on these exhilarating experiences, we can't help but feel a sense of pride and anticipation for the incredible journey that lies ahead. The first term of Year 8 has set the bar high, and we know that together, we'll continue to reach new heights of excellence. Here's to the fantastic start we've had, and to the countless more memories we'll create as we navigate the exciting adventures of Year 8!

MISS LEAH HUNKIN HEAD OF YEAR 9 It's been an amazing Term 1, and we are proud to share some of Year 9’s fantastic achievements over the past few months. They've had a fantastic term, and we look forward to the opportunities and experiences that await them. Have a fantastic holidays and a great Christmas to those who are celebrating.

We started Term 1 by coming together to celebrate World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, October 10th. BSAK’s student led Mental Health Committee, including Omar Omar and Harry Lewis in Year 9, organised a series of activities for the rest of the Secondary School.

YEAR 9 STUDENTS DAZZLE IN ‘OLIVER!’ To top off an amazing term, Secondary School students delivered a sensational performance in the production of "Oliver!" The talent and hard work displayed by all involved was truly exceptional, and the show was nothing short of spectacular. Well done to the many students from Year 9 who were involved.

MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZAS

Year 9s continued to demonstrate their musical talent this term.

As always, the KS3 annual LipSync competition was an event filled with energy, creativity, and talent.

In October, some of our talented students had the privilege of performing at the opening of the NBA event at Etihad Arena, which was a truly remarkable achievement, and throughout the term we experienced many Year 9 students performing in our weekly Friday Jam.

Well done to Phoenix who were the winners in the KS3 category, followed closely by Hydra and Chimera. Congratulations to all the students who participated.

TASTER DAY

As always, it's inspiring to witness the passion and dedication Year 9 put into their musical pursuits.

This term, Year 9 embarked on the journey of exploring their GCSE options including participating in the GCSE Taster Day in November. This was an excellent opportunity to experience subjects that they do not currently study but could choose for their GCSEs. It was great to see Year 9’s active involvement and enthusiasm in this process.

The initial straw poll deadline has passed, and we look forward to supporting students as they make their final decisions in Term 2.

MR SONNY ZIMMER HEAD OF YEAR 10 I have really enjoyed finding my feet in terms of working with our brilliant tutors to support our wonderful Year 10 students. I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking to so many parents so far, and I look forward to continuing working with such a supportive parent community. There is so much to reflect upon already, and I fear I will only scratch the surface of Year 10 achievements to date. From continued academic excellence to deep co-curricular involvement, and outstanding success in sports and the arts, Year 10 continue to blow me away daily.

COCURRICULAR

Year 10s have continued to excel in their sporting endeavours so far this year.

We’ve had our very own Millie and Grace involved with the Under 19s rugby team, Year 10 girls leading our U15 netball team to 3rd place at BSME and 2nd place in the ADISSA league, and Year 10 boys helping our three U15 football teams to strong performances in their ADISSA leagues.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

One reason our league success could not be replicated at BSME for U15 football was due to the sheer volume of Year 10 involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

Nearly 80 students have begun working towards the Bronze award, many have begun the service element (including Farida, Dougie and Zaki helping yours truly with U13 football training!) and they went on their first expedition to Al Khatim desert in November.

Many of our year 10s have had the opportunity to speak to experts this year such as staff from University of Waterloo Mathematics faculty (from a selfish, Maths-centric point of view, this workshop was amazing!) and a virtuoso violinist in Timothy Chooi. Many more unique opportunities will come up this year and I urge Year 10s to continue getting involved.

YEAR 10’S IN OLIVER!

Congratulations to all Year 10s involved in our fabulous school production of Oliver! I unfortunately missed the show due to illness, but the reviews I have heard have made me very sorry to have not caught it myself. You should all be commended on not only an electric performance, but the huge commitment you undertook to reach such high standards. Well done!

Year 10s have now begun their GCSE studies in all courses now, and it has been great to hear how positive students have been about their courses to date. Coursework for many has begun in earnest, and I’d urge all students to ensure time is utilised effectively and if there are any issues please approach your subject teachers for further support.

YEAR 10 ACADEMICS

Other subject achievements to date have included Murray and Millie securing awards in the UKMT Senior Mathematics challenge, a test designed for Sixth Form students. Along with Navu, Murray also secured a CREST awards in Science.

WORK EXPERIENCE

As well as hitting the ground running with GCSEs and CCAs, students are being provided with a holistic BSAK experience this year which includes a week’s work experience in June 2024.

All students should have completed their CVs, have a completed Parental Consent form via the parent portal and should now start approaching companies to secure their placements.

A special shout-out to Harry Shepherd for being the first Year 10 to arrange his placement and complete all necessary paperwork.

MRS SARAH NORAY HEAD OF YEAR 11 As well as preparing for the challenges of their final exams this year, Year 11 continue to contribute to the BSAK community in many different ways and also focus on their personal wellbeing.

The term has been packed full of exciting House events. Something that brings a smile to everyone's face and always shows the brilliant community spirit in BSAK.

HOUSE COMPETITIONS LIP SYNC & TUG OF WAR

BSAK SEVENS

Again, many sporting highlights this term, with a particular shout out to the girls under 19 Rugby team who did brilliantly at the recent BSAK 7’s, with the help of some of our Year 11 superstars. The girls played up an age group, with lots of the girls new to contact Rugby this year and some new to rugby altogether!! Their commitment and effort was exemplary.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION

Congratulations to all the talented Year 11’s who starred in this year's school production Oliver! Your commitment to excellence in performance and your enthusiasm really shone through on the stage and I am so proud of you all!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

A particular thank you to Emma Jones who not only starred in the production but also created all the artwork for our stunning programme this year!

A brilliant few days in the desert where students were put through their paces at Fossil Rock on their practise for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. It was an extraordinary test of endurance and resilience and one that showed their brilliant comradery and ability to empathise with one another. A huge well done to everyone on the expedition, you should be extremely proud of yourselves for what you achieved. Good luck for the assessment in February.

MOCK EXAMS & FORTHCOMING ETERNAL GCSE’S Congratulations to the Year group for conducting themselves in a really mature manner in the recent Mock exams. Results of which will be published at Mock results day on Friday 12th January. As mentioned previously, these will be used to inform the Sixth Form team of possible options each student could be offered for next year and will be important data for the one to one meetings with Mr Oakes during the parent consultation days in late January.

MR STEVE OAKES ASSISTANT HEAD: SIXTH FORM It’s been a fantastic start to the year in Sixth Form. Our Y13 students have been working incredibly hard to secure their university places. Universities seem to be responding very quickly to the students' applications. One student received two offers within 24 hours of their submission! Our early entry applications are also showing signs of success. To date, we have 5 students who have received Oxbridge interviews, and a number of students have interviews in the US at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. A number of our students applying to study medicine are also starting to receive interviews, so it’s going to be a busy start to the New Year. I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome two new members of staff to the Sixth Form team. Our Sixth Form administrator, Mrs McGuire, retired back to the UK this year and has been replaced by Mrs Fooks. I’m also delighted to inform you that we have an additional University and Careers counsellor, Mr Schooley. Finally, I’d like to mention that we re-launched our BSAK Oaks platform.

MR GUY SCHOOLEY

If you’d like to join our Alumni as a parent you can do so here. We will be running events for all our Alumni over the next year and it would be great to see you there.

OLIVER! SENSATIONAL SIXTH FORM

SIXTH FORM

In a performance worthy of a West End Show our Sixth Form Students were magnificent in the recent production of Oliver! Huge congratulations to everyone involved.

WELCOME TO SIXTH FORM In September we welcomed the largest number of Year 12 students ever to the Sixth Form at BSAK. One of their first tutor time activities was to take a class selfie.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SIXTH FORM Many of our Sixth Form students have leadership roles in the Sixth Form

SUBJECT AMBASSADORS Our Subject Ambassadors represent their favourite subject working with Heads of Department to promote the subject across the School community. Our Subject Ambassadors attended the Sixth Form Open Evening, talking to Year 11 students and answering their questions about the subjects they represent and they have also begun tutoring younger students that are finding their subjects challenging. Our Biology Subject Ambassadors visited primary to teach the Year 6 students how to do a heart dissection. Both the Sixth Form students and the Year 6s loved the experience.

UAE AMBASSADORS Our UAE Ambassador team this year is made up of two committees; the Events Council and the National Identity Committee. The Events council organise events celebrating UAE culture, traditions and history. The National Identity Committee spread awareness and knowledge of Emirati culture, looking for opportunities to educate the community about the United Arab Emirates. Some of our UAE Ambassadors spoke to all the secondary students during our recent Flag Day celebrations.

HEADS OF HOUSE AND HOUSE CAPTAINS Our student Heads of House and House Captains arrange house competitions and encourage participation across the year groups. They did us proud this term with their brilliant performance in the Lip Sync competition.

PREFECTS Our Senior Prefect Team and Year 12 Prefects are working together to build the sense of community within the school. They will be working with the younger year groups in tutor time, organising events and delivering assemblies. In addition, they will be helping with break and lunch duty for the younger students.

MEDSOC The Medical Society (MedSoc) is for all students aspiring to study medicine. Students are prepared for and supported with medicine applications through a wide range of activities related to a career in medicine. Most recently, the Year 13 students have been taking part in mock interviews in preparation for their upcoming university interviews. They have also been talking about their experiences of the application process to the year 12 students, helping to prepare them for next year.

SCIENCE WEEK

is a celebration of all things science arranged by our brilliant subject ambassadors. Zoya, one of our Year 13 Science Subject Ambassadors, describes the events that took place throughout the week below. "This year's Science Week was an exhilarating celebration of curiosity and excitement, with nearly 200 Secondary students participating in the available activities. From sharing entertaining science facts with peers, to naming as many elements of the Periodic Table as possible, our school's atmosphere was 'charged' with an infectious enthusiasm!

Zoya Year 13 Science Ambassador

SCIENCE WEEK The highlight of the celebration, however, was undoubtedly the Primary and Secondary Science Shows.

Our dedicated Year 12 Ambassadors delighted their audiences - totalling almost 500 students - with the Van de Graaff, 'magic' colour changes, and blue luminol blood testing. I (Zoya) even had the pleasure of acting as the deceased for a murder scene; my drama skills have finally come in handy! In addition, the finales featured homemade methanol rockets that quite literally went off with a bang, along with the highly anticipated return of a crowd favourite: the elephant toothpaste experiment! We sincerely hope that the school has enjoyed the experience of this event, and that our demonstrations have inspired them to further explore the world of science in the future! Zoya, Lora and the Science Ambassador Team"
