TERM 1 CURRICULUM MAP Year 1


WATCH US GROW ENGLISH

MATHEMATICS

English this term will have both a reading and writing focus. We will be reading the texts ● The Lion Inside ● The proudest blue ● The storm whale, ● Aesop's fable The Boy Who Cried Wolf

This term we will be re visiting concepts taught in Reception as well as extending and introducing new mathematical concepts.

Our writing focus will including poetry and setting descriptions. We will also focus on the following skills: Forming lowercase letters and digits 0-9. Hold pencil with a comfortable grip. Begin to understand which letters belong to which letter families. Match lower and uppercase letters. Use a capital for their own name. Use personal pronoun I Compose a sentence orally before writing it. Begin to use capital letters, full stops and leave finger spaces between words. Phonics and spelling will be revisiting Phase 3 phonics, moving onto phase 4.

SCIENCE The science focus this term is Plants and Seasonal Changes. Our plant topic will include Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees ● Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees. ● Observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants ● Find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy. Seasonal Changes the children will learn: How weather can change across the four seasons and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies dependent on the season.

Number/ Calculation ● Count to / across 50 ● Count in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s ● Identify ‘one more’ and ‘ one less’ ● Read & write numbers to 20 ● Use language, e.g. ‘more than’, ‘most’ ● Use +, - and = symbols ● Know number bonds to 10 Geometry & Measures ● Use common vocabulary for comparison, e.g. heavier, taller, full, longest, quickest ● Begin to measure length, capacity, weight ● Use language of days, weeks, months & years ● Recognise & name common 2d and 3d shapes ● Order & arrange objects

ART AND DESIGN In Art this term we will be focusing on drawing skills. The children will learning to use a variety of different shading and drawing techniques. They will also explore colour mixing with paint and re-create “Sunflower” using painting skills learned. In DT the children will be learning about structures. And use a variety of materials to make free standing structures. The children will also learn about healthy food and learn how to chop, peel and grate different fruits and vegetables.

MUSIC Focus on action songs, rhymes and chants and being able to keep a steady. Exploring pitch, listening to high and low sounds using tuned percussion instruments. In the second half of the term learn about some of the instruments of the Orchestra through Saint-saens Carnival of the Animals. Sing some festive songs towards the end of the term.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Gymnastics this term will focus on mat work. Children will experience and learn a selection of balances, jumps and rolls, then look to link the skills together while building a gymnastics sequence.

HUMANITIES

History this term will focus on changes the children can remember. We will be creating personal timelines, looking at different toys the children play with as they get older and looking at how the UAE has changed over the last 50 years. Geography this term we will be looking at map skills. We will use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.

Fundamental Movement Skills this term will focus on the transferable skills such as running, skipping, jumping and dodging. Children will then look to apply them to small sided games.

ARABIC (NON-NATIVE)

Swimming this term will focus on water confidence and stroke development.

We will be learning new vocabulary, focusing on masculne and feminine. Using this knowledge, students will be able to introduce things and ask ‘’what is this?’’

MORAL EDUCATION As Year 1 is a new to the children, we will work on helping them adjust their behaviour in different situations, and take changes of routine in their stride. We will focus on the importance of playing cooperatively and taking turns with others. We will also talk about the importance of other people’s feeling and encourage the children to be sensitive to these and form positive relationships with adults and other children.

Students will be introduced to Arabic letters ‫د‬،‫أ‬،‫م‬،‫ب‬،‫س‬،‫ و‬with short vowels.
