TERM 3 OVERVIEW

Year 2 - Term 3

ENGLISH

In our reading lessons, we will use the following books as our class shared text this term. We will use the texts for predictions, inference and summarising. We will look at how dialogue is used in a text.

● Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World.

● Aesops Fables

● Fantastic Mr Fox

In our writing lessons we will write character descriptions, recount from personal experience and write a non chronological report. Through these pieces of writing we will consolidate our knowledge of punctuation, noun phrases, adjectives writing in chronological order.

SCIENCE

This term we will revisit out Learning about Plants and Bulbs. We will learn about what plants need to survive, we will plant our own seeds and use our knowledge to care for it.

We will also revisit our learning about Animals including Humans. We will notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults, find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air) and describe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene.

MATHEMATICS

Fractions

● recognise parts and wholes

● recognise a half, a quarter, a third and three quarters

● find a half, a quarter, a third and three quarters

● understand unit and non-unit fractions

● count in fractions up to a whole

Measurement: Time

● revision of time to half past.

● tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour.

● draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

● know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day.

● compare and sequence intervals of time.

● read, understand and gather information from a calendar

Statistics

● make tally charts and tables

● interpret and draw block diagrams

● interpret and draw pictograms in scales of 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

Position and Direction

Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement including:

● movement in a straight line

● distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise).

Order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences.

COMPUTING

This term we will learn how to search for websites effectively using keywords and how be safe online. This will include recognising the importance of keeping personal information private, identifying where to go for help and support when we have concerns and understanding that the information we put online leaves a digital footprint.

In addition to this, we will be using our research skills to create a digital book using the app Book Creator.

MORAL EDUCATION

In term three, we will be learning about ‘Relationships’, including building trust, dealing with conflict, problem solving and celebrating others. We will also be looking at ‘Changing Me’, where we will focus on life cycles in nature and how to deal with change in preparation for our transition to Year 3.

ART AND DT

HUMANITIES History

This term we are focussing on significant people in History. We will learn about the late Sheikh Zayed (Peace Be Upon Him) and his vision for the UAE. We will learn about how his vision shaped the future of the UAE and the impact this has had on our lives today.

Geography

We will use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map. We will then use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features.

Children will focus on Textiles and Collage in term 3. They will use stencilling techniques to achieve different effects and learn to manipulate fabric and yarns by poking, pulling, threading and weaving. Students will use drawing tools such as chalk in different ways and on different surfaces and learn to combine materials to create colourful and textural effects.

In 3D work, students will apply techniques of joining, cutting and constructing. They will select modelling materials for their properties and use to create a sculpture from a sketch.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SWIMMING

The children will have the opportunity to develop fundamental skills related to striking and fielding and cooperative games such as throwing and catching. While swimming, the children will continue to develop their stroke proficiency and water based skills. They will also begin to develop their water safety skills, such as floating, travelling and the water safe position.

MUSIC Bucket Drumming Karate

This term we will be trying to collect as many karate belts as possible in our bucket drumming course. This unit will help improve rhythm skills, group playing and develop both fine and gross motor skills.
