TERM 2 CURRICULUM MAP Year 6


ENGLISH:

Book study – How to Live Forever by Colin Thompson, Skellig by David Almond Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. Genres – Explanatory text., autobiographies, extended third person narrative (adventure stories), news reports, poems that create imagery. Spelling -words ending -able, -ably and ible/ibly; homophones, words with the /i/ sound spelt ie after c, words ending -ance, -ancy, -ant, -ent,-ence, ency, homophones. Grammar – punctuating direct speech; simple and progressive forms of the past tense, use third person when writing a story, use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time, place and cause, use modal verbs and adverbs to express degrees of possibility, use a variety of punctuation (bullet points, full stops, capital letters, colons and commas to mark a clause or separate words in a list). Speaking & Listening – Performance poetry- vary intonation and volume to convey meaning, use body language to deliver impact.

MATHS:

Ratio – pupils will learn to use ratio language and how to scale a ratio up or down by multiplying and dividing. Algebra- Pupils will be introduced to algebra for the first time. Beginning with 1 and 2 step function machines they will begin to form expressions to express these. Decimals- building on the pupils knowledge of place value from term 1. Children will learn to understand numbers with up to 3 decimal places. They will learn to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 100. Decimals will be linked to our work on fractions and pupils will learn to convert decimals to fractions. Fractions, decimals and percentages- Pupils will explore the link between fractions, decimals and percentages and their equivalents. Area, perimeter and volume - Pupils will explore finding the area of triangles and parallelograms. They will learn to find the volume of a cuboid using centimeter cubes. Statistics - Pupils will learn to draw and interpret line graphs and pie charts. They will then use their addition and division skills to calculate the mean average in a variety of different contexts.

HUMANITIES:

Physical Processes - Describe and understand key aspects of physical Geography including Mountains, Volcanoes and Earthquakes

SCIENCE:

Circulatory System - identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function. describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans Advanced Circuits- associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the Circuit. compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram

COMPUTING: Code.org Coding and debugging

ARABIC (NON-NATIVE): Pupils will learn how to discuss what sports and activities they do in their free time with more detail and confidence. Revision of prior topics such as days of the week and connectives will help students give more informed responses. Telling the time will be covered in the latter part of the term.

MFL:

Spanish Students will embed the topics of numbers / days / age / months and birthdays and will continue to learn about the wider Spanish-speaking world. Cultural focus: La Fiesta de San Fermín.

MUSIC:

Samba Drumming Pulse and rhythm, polyrhythms and ostinato patterns Samba drumming and Stomp Group composition and performance


PE:

In games, the boys will take part in Football, while the girls will take part in Netball. They will develop their skills in isolation and apply into competitive situations. In PE, the students will continue to Swim as well as Gymnastics. They will develop fundamental skills such as rotations and balances and put them into routines.
