Patron’s Message This has been another exciting and successful year for the British School, Alexandria.

The highlight of the past year for me was the October Gala Dinner which was held in the Consulate Garden and which was a great opportunity to meet many of the parents, teachers and supporters of the School.Thanks to the Friends of the School and everyone else involved in organising such a successful evening.

BSA continues to provide British education to a very high standard and I am impressed that it remains one of the most sought after schools in Alexandria. I look forward to continuing to do what I can to support the School to further its success.

Chair’s Message I am extremely more proud that 2018 will always be remembered as the year in which our establishment became formally recognised by the Egyptian authorities. The Protocol that we signed has given the school a solid footing for years to come, marking out the BSA as outstanding among the other International schools in Egypt and allowing us the freedom to determine our own curriculum, teaching methods, management structure, fee structure and staffing.

Another significant event is that The School Board of Governors has signed the deeds for a new school site which will not only give us more space, but also the opportunity to provide the school with the most up-to-date educational facilities and equipment in a building and environment more fitting to the history of BSA Our school would not be so outstanding without the continuous pursuit both of academic excellence and allowing each and every student to fulfil their potential. I should like to take this opportunity to extend sincere thanks to our hard-working and committed teaching staff and, indeed, the entire School community for creating an environment where fantastic achievements can be realised and where all our students can thrive. Thank you too to all of those who work all year round enabling our students to realise their dreams and aspirations. Also thank you for the team spirit which motivates us all to keep going, and to keep believing and supporting the British School of Alexandria.

Principal’s Message I am pleased to report another successful year at the BSA. Our students achieved an excellent set of examination results and, in particular, we congratulate those students who were the recipients of a range of international awards. The school has gained in popularity with an increasing number of students applying which we believe reflects the continuing successes of the school. We also continue to develop our provision for the development of the whole person as you will see from the numerous different activities that are evidenced in this year book.

Two particular milestones worthy of special mention are the gaining of legal recognition by the Ministry of Education and acquiring a new site for the school. In December, at a reception with the Minister of Education, we signed a protocol between the BSA and the Ministry following several months of negotiation. This will allow students to take Ministry examinations in Arabic, as well as IGCSE and AS and A levels, and gives us a much firmer legal footing.

In January we signed a contract for a long-term lease for a new site for the BSA which was the culmination of over a year of searching for somewhere suitable and was followed by lengthy negotiations. The site is in a prime position in the centre of Alexandria, opposite Shalalat Gardens, and will enable us to have the whole school under one roof with much improved facilities. The building is an historic one, originally built towards the end of the nineteenth century, and our architect is currently working on the interior design of the new building, ensuring that we retain its historic features.

We are preparing to implement a scheme used by a number of high profile international schools called “High Performance Learning” which will be launched at the start of the next academic year and will support the aim of achieving “Excellence in Learning and Preparation for Life and Leadership” for all our students.We will also be building further on a number of developments that have been initiated this year, including changes in the way we teach English and phonics in Primary school.

Finally, I should like to thank all our staff and governors for their hard work and commitment which have resulted in another successful year for our students. I would also like to thank our parents for all the support they have given to the BSA. Success breeds success and we anticipate another very exciting academic year, 2018 - 2019.

Pre-Prep School

Head of Pre-Prep School I am once again delighted to write a few words at the beginning of the Pre-Prep section of the Yearbook.

Summing up a year in a few words is very difficult. One of the joys of working at BSA is the wide variety of amazing things that go on throughout the year, from the amount of progress and attainment the children each achieve, to the wonderful trips, events and charity days. I think some of the highlights of Pre-Prep this year were the amazing performance of Aladdin and our Pre-Prep Fun days.

But my favourite memories will not be the same as your memories. I hope reading through this book will remind you of the people and events that have made this year special to you – perhaps it was your Class Assembly or a trip to Cairo or a House Competition or Whole School Event day or simply new friends that you made during the year. Walt Disney once famously said " You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it takes the people to make it a reality ". Nowhere is that truer than at BSA. I cannot begin to thank enough the teachers, the students, the parents and all the Pre-Prep team who make it possible for us to experience together the spirit of this unique school.

Sadly, at the end of every school year, it is the nature of international schools that a proportion of our teachers and some students will be leaving us. To you, I extend my special thanks and best wishes. I hope your memories of BSA are happy ones and that the future is bright for you, and also that you know you have helped make the school the place it is.

We are scientists!

FS1 Red had a fantastic time during Science Week.We made lots of predictions about which objects would float or sink, and were able to sort them into two groups. We also filled different containers, including rubber gloves and bowls, with water and small objects.

We put them in the freezer to see what would happen and the next day we found they had frozen so we explored different ways to help them melt.

We loved exploring magnets. We tried to find out which objects were magnetic around our classroom and which ones we could move to the top of the cup.

Our Creative Year This year we have enjoyed being creative using various materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, paint and much more. We have made collages and used recycled materials to make models on various themes.

BSA participated in the COBIS Art competition on the theme of Mother Nature, as did many other international schools. Although we did not win, we had lots of fun in the making process. FS1 Blue explored the different textures of clay, making their own version of Mother Nature. We have learnt about the meaning of nature and natural objects versus artificial things. We had great fun looking for natural resources and creating our pieces using the tree as a canvas.

We have some wonderful artists in the making at BSA!

Under the sea!

There's a commotion in the ocean: the dolphins are squeaking, the jellyfish are jiggling and the lobsters are clippety-clapping and snippety-snapping. During our under-the-sea topic, the children developed their own role play area, adding their own sea creatures created with shapes. They enjoyed learning the names and features of the different sea creatures. We read the ‘Rainbow Fish’ which taught us the important lesson of sharing.

We sang different water rhymes, such as “Row, row, row your boat” and “1,2,3,4,5” and began developing our awareness of rhythm and rhyme.

Learning Through Play in the Early Years What a wonderful year we have had in FS2 Red! We have had so many different highlights it is impossible to just mention one. However, one of the most important things that we do in the Early Years is to learn through our play, as play is essential to further children’s skills. It is the most powerful tool that we have to develop our future engineers, artists, doctors and scientists, to name but a few! This year we have designed shields, using different materials and thereby developing our motor skills as well as our imagination.

We have created games as a group, inventing our own rules. We have also “gone wild� in deconstructed role play where we used boxes and lots of different materials to create and develop storylines. We have also recreated different roles such as being a pilot. We are constantly learning and having a marvelous fun at the same time!

“Happy times are never ending when we’re playing and pretending�

FS2 Blue have had a fantastic, fun-filled year. We enjoyed having a deconstructed role-play area where the children could use their imagination to turn the boxes into anything they wanted! The children made trains, space rockets, pirate ships, race cars, reading dens and more!

The children were also able to think of other props they could use to make their role-play experience even better. It was lovely to see the children working as a team and getting involved in a role-play narrative together.

International Day Discoveries FS2 White learnt about Cambodia during International day. We met children from a school in Cambodia by using video links.

The children taught us how to say ‘Sousaday’ which means ‘Good Morning’. They also taught us the names of many colours in their language. We looked at different types of transport, buildings, animals and food and we talked about how things are different or the same as in Egypt.We found out that some people in Cambodia like to eat bugs and spiders but we choose to make banana biscuits instead of eating spiders! We also made beautiful lotus flowers which grow in the Cambodian countryside.

Creativity and Fun Learning Experience Year 1 Red have been very creative in their ideas across the curriculum this year. The children learnt essential fine motor skills and shared experiences of using different types of media to design or present their work. In Science, they studied the topic of seasons through the year. The children made a ‘nest’ for the spring season after watching how a weaver bird builds their nest. They designed their own 3D flowering plants in collage and labelled the different parts of the plant. In topic, the children looked at countries around the world and chose India to copy patterns and print designs.

On activity days, Art work was based on themes, such as Halloween, International Day and World Book Day.The children made a skeleton based on the story ‘Funny Bones’ and made story hats and speech bubbles. In continuous provision, the children used Maths 2D shapes and building blocks to make designs or links to their topics. They used drama to show characters and explored new stories with play. They even collaborated with Year 2 to perform the winter term play, ‘Aladdin’.

Through creative challenge, the children learnt teamwork and communication skills. They learnt to discuss and evaluate their work and had a fun learning experience through creativity.

Maths in Year 1 Blue In Maths this year the children have been doing a lot of different practical activities and using a wide variety of resources to support them with their learning.They have learnt about 2D and 3D shapes and the children came up with a lovely idea to help identify 3D shapes: they decided to hide the shapes in playdough and ask the other children to guess what shape was hidden inside by only feeling it.The children also enjoyed using the peg boards and cubes to help with their addition and subtraction.

The children also liked to work outside and we used the climbing frame to learn about position and placement. The children have had a very fun year learning about Maths and have clearly enjoyed taking part and working hard.

Swimming Lessons Year 1 White were thoroughly delighted during the summer term to take part in weekly swimming lessons at the Alexandria Sporting Club. A first for many!

All the children worked very hard and made huge amounts of progress.They developed in confidence and independence, both in and out of the water. Many children progressed to be able to swim the entire length of the pool, not an easy task for at any age. They also enjoyed a wide range of water confidence and water safety games, whilst at the same time encouraging and supporting each other to do their very best.

We are really looking forward to our swimming lessons next year!

Fish Mummification In Year 2 Red, we have had a wonderful year. The highlight of the year was our Ancient Egypt topic. We began by learning about mummification where the children had a chance to mummify a fish. We took the insides of the fish out, wrapped it in bandages and bathed the fish in salt.After that the fish was buried in a tomb for two weeks. When we dug it up, it was a little bit smelly!

As a way of completing our topic, we went to the amazing pyramids of Giza and Sakara in Cairo.The children had lots of fun and really enjoyed the day.The treasure hunt at the Sakara pyramids was exciting and we found a statue of Imhotep and the feet of Djoser. In the afternoon, we spent our time looking at the pyramids in Giza where we learned many interesting facts and had the opportunity to take lots of photos. During this day, the children were a credit to BSA and behaved brilliantly. We arrived back exhausted but excited to tell our parents all about our day in Cairo.

Red Nose Day This March we held a range of fundraising events for local charities to celebrate the British charity event, Red Nose Day.We celebrated with a bake sale in each campus where parents donated cakes to sell at school, and we held a Talent Show for Years 1 and 2 to show off our skills for sponsors. All children and teachers came dressed in fun accessories to celebrate too! Altogether we raised LE17,713! I want to say a HUGE thank you for your support and effort today to raise an amazing amount of money for charity this year. This event is always enjoyed by children and it is a great chance for everyone to get involved and work together!

The Adventures of Year 2 White We started the year by exploring the galaxy with our Space topic.

We learned all about astronauts landing on the moon and made some delicious space sandwiches, before moving on to taste some of China’s culinary delights as we studied our first Geography topic of the year.

Next we ventured off to a whole new world with our winter production of Aladdin. We helped Widow Twanky run her launderette and explored the Cave of Wonders while belting out our favourite song; ‘Just Three Wishes.’

Our Ancient Egypt topic was by far the highlight of the year. From mummifying fish to designing our own sarcophagus and getting to go all the way to Cairo to see the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We know all the steps, so be careful or we will make a mummy out of you!

The summer term started with a mystery as our classroom was transformed into SATs Chief Morgan’s Secret Agent Training Camp. We completed lots of secret missions and challenges, won lots of prizes and we are now proud to say we are Super Secret Agents.

After all of these adventures we are ready for the summer holiday and we can’t wait for the next step on our journey as we move into Year 3!

Head of Prep School As another year comes to an end, it is a time to reflect and for students to feel really proud of all their achievements and learning throughout the academic year. There have been so many memorable moments.

A key memory, I believe, for all staff and students would be the Prep School play,‘The Button Box’.

Students excelled in their singing and dancing skills and Year 6 particularly enjoyed preparing for their key roles in the production. Everyone did a fantastic job!

It has also been memorable for me seeing great student progress, especially in students’ reading throughout the school. The joy students have expressed when reading books for pleasure and enjoyment has been priceless!

This year we wanted the children to become better at incorporating the six learning goals in their daily learning and also for them to understand what it is like to be good students in all subject areas such as PHSE and the creative subjects. This has certainly been achieved.

It is sad to see Year 6 leaving us but we look forward to welcoming the current Year 2s in August. I would like to wish Year 6 the best of luck with their transition into the Senior School, the start of a path to becoming young adults.

I am excited to be here next year working in the school with wonderful students, staff and parents and I would like to thank the brilliant members of the Prep team for all their hard work this year.

Trip to Fagnoon One of the highlights taken from this academic year involved our trip to Fagnoon. We had such a great day out and completed so many fun-filled activities.

Our day began with us painting tiles, which we found very tricky as we had to stay in between the lines.We then had a go at making our own flatbread.

It turned out perfect as we had listened well to all the instructions given.

After cleaning ourselves up, we were allowed to use the climbing facilities made of wood and rope.

We managed to climb all the way to the top and encouraged each other to face our fear of heights! Before leaving to go home, we planted a mixture of herbs and fed the animals some hay!

It was such a wonderful day and an experience to remember.

Marvellous Maths in Year 3 Blue We have worked extremely hard in Maths this year and, as a result, we have made excellent progress with learning new methods, working with larger numbers and most importantly enjoying our Maths lessons. Here we are putting some of these Maths skills to good use by using a variety of practical, mental and written methods to help us get to the answers. Mr DC has been hugely impressed with our independence and ability to work with our friends in Maths lessons which has, in turn, improved our ability to use these skills and help us solve all kinds of different Maths problems.

The Six Wives of King Henry VIII Year 3 White’s class assembly was one of the highlights of our year. In our topic lessons the children had lots of fun learning all about when the Tudors ruled England.

As we were also learning about play-scripts, we wrote and then rehearsed a play-script entitled ‘The Six Wives of King Henry VIII’, which the children performed brilliantly in our assembly.

In our English lessons during the summer term we have been writing adventure stories based around the picture book ‘Tuesday’.

Year 4 Red Highlights The best things about Year 4 have been English lessons, which have been a lot of fun. I also really enjoyed Science when we built circuits during our electricity topic.

We are all looking forward to Sports for Life and can’t wait to go on our last trip of the year.

Year 4 Blue Highlights There has been lots going on this year for Y4B. The children have been working hard across the curriculum, especially in English and Maths.The focus has been on improving reading, writing and mental maths. They have made great progress in all these areas and the children should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Y4B have also enjoyed studying science, learning about digestion, electricity, states of matter, sound and categorising different types of animals. The culmination of this was Science Week which was enjoyed by all.

In Topic they have studied Vikings, rivers and mountains, as well as the development of railways.

Lots of time was spent preparing for the production in Term 2 and everyone danced and sang superbly, entertaining the other children and parents alike. The production was enjoyed by everyone, audience and participants alike.

Over the last year, many of the children in 4B represented BSA at football, swimming and singing at different events, both here in Alexandria and Cairo. They displayed great manners and sportsmanship and were a credit to themselves and the school.

So the end of another year is upon us and it will be with more than a little sadness that Mr Galloway says goodbye to 4B. They have been a lively class, full of fun and a fair bit of mischief, but for all that they have been a wonderful group of children to teach. A class that I will remember for a long time and I wish them well going forward in their schooling.

Year 6 Blue

The UK Trip Whilst some were over in London, the rest of us stayed back and participated in some awesome activities. It was a week filled with murder mysteries, puppet shows, dancing and baking! The cookies we made had many salivating across the school. We used unique ingredients to suite our peculiar tastes. Once completed, we held our own little bake sale and donated all proceeds to charity.

We also conducted our own science investigation where we delved into the world of animals and the way their adaptions work in their particular environments.

A special thanks to Ms Rabab and Ms Hania for making this a great experience for all!

The UK Trip Our exciting trip this year was of course our experience in England. We stayed in an outdoor activity centre, taking part in lots of exciting activities including fencing, a giant swing, aeroball and canoeing. We also spent a day visiting London, where we had various tourist experiences, including the London Eye, the Thames river cruise and of course visiting a sweet shop. We were also lucky to see the London half-marathon being run, so we cheered on some of the racers. Our other excursion was to Stratfordupon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare. We sat at the top of a tour bus and saw all of the sights of the beautiful town. We visited a toy museum and ate fish and chips, a traditional English food, in the park. We finished the day by visiting an indoor rainforest and seeing lots of animals.

It was a wonderful trip and one that created many long-lasting memories!

Head of Senior School This year has seen a number of initiatives as we strive to give our students more and more opportunities. Our Tuesday enrichment programme has been extended to include self-defence, dodgeball, public speaking and COBIS science preparation. Extended curriculum days are now in their third year and have become an established part of the school year. In addition, there have been workshops on gaming addiction, on-line safety, the science of cooking and sports leadership and also trips to the Catacombs, the Odium Tiny, El Alamein, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria harbour and Pharco pharmaceuticals company. Visits to local orphanages and to City Centre to investigate people’s shopping habits have also been popular The creative arts are an important part of the curriculum and this year we hosted a Murder Mystery event which involved participants from five other local and Cairo schools. Not only did our younger students participate in the day but a number of our Sixth Formers had performed in the video clue clips used. The Senior School production this year was Aladdin and was a showcase for our students’ dramatic skills.

Our Sixth Form continues to grow and become a more established part of the Senior School. This year we had the largest number of students so far, with some of them joining us from other schools. We introduced the Sixth Form university preparation course and students learn practical skills vital for university life. In addition, we have set up a mentoring scheme whereby our Sixth Form students visit the Prep School to take part in a shared reading activity. The students also had the opportunity to go on an overnight team-building trip to Cairo which had a focus on leadership skills.

In the Spring term, we were very lucky to have a presentation by a guest speaker about the world-wide refugee crisis, with a particular focus on Syrian refugees. Students and staff consider giving to charity very important and throughout the year there have been a number of bake sales, sports events and a charity walk to raise money for local good causes. One of the best supported appeals was that for donations of formula baby milk for local orphanages and the response was overwhelming. Bambi Day is now an established part of the calendar and our students love to give their time to entertain less fortunate local children.

The school moving to a new site is a great excitement and our students were asked for their views – they had some diverse suggestions ranging from a swimming pool (the most popular) to a trampoline to a pet in each room. Although some of their requests will not be fulfilled, having a new “home” is an exciting prospect.

I would like to thank all staff members in the Senior School for making this another busy, yet very fulfilling, year. I would also like to give my very best wishes to any students who are leaving us for the next stages of their educational journeys.

Reflections of Year 7 What a first year in Senior School we have had! We have managed to pack in so much in such a short time.

We have all enjoyed the many opportunities to take part in lots of different activities and trips.

As well as our amazing Iberotel trip and trip to the Catacombs in the first term, we went to Carrefour on a Geography field trip. It was quite nerve wracking having to ask complete strangers about their shopping habits but the visit to the food court made it all worthwhile.

The school production this year was Aladdin and it had a good number of Year 7 students involved in all types of roles, from acting to the sound and lighting crew. It was a big commitment but we really enjoyed it.

A big highlight for us were the dish parties which we had in a number of subjects such as English, French and History. Any time we can combine learning with food is always going to be something we remember. We also enjoyed our swimming lessons and we want to thank the PE department for this continuing opportunity.

Throughout the year a number of us were involved in raising money for charity as part of the COBIS Sustainable Development competition. One group raised money for supplies for a local school and another group raised money for a children’s cancer hospital. We had to organize and run bake sales and run a stall at the school bazaar which was stressful but fun. We got a lot out of helping others and it has helped with our personal development as well.

All in all, we had such a great time this year and we would like to thank all our Senior School teachers for their effort and patience with us!

Year 8 Pyramids Trip As part of the History curriculum,Year 8 took a two-day in April to visit the Cairo pyramids. The students visited all three pyramid sites, starting with Saqqara, the earliest of the pyramids, then Dashur and finally Giza pyramids. For many of Year 8, it was their first time to visit these historic sites and, for the daring, there was a chance to go inside two of the pyramids.

The students also learnt about who built these pyramids, when they were built and the reasons for their construction. In the evening we attended the fantastic Sound and Light show.

Other highlights included a water polo match and camel riding. All in all, it was a wonderful trip!

Year 9 Highlights Year 9 have enjoyed a busy and engaging academic year with a wide and varied curriculum to explore.

Particular highlights this year have been the various projects set in Art by Ms Parr, Science Week and the Kafr Abdou field work activities with Ms Cartmell.

In Art Year 9 used a pirate and treasure hunt theme to produce sketch books using a variety of artistic techniques from biro drawings to drip painting. As anend-of-year project, they studied a series of pictures, paintings and drawings of Alexandria and developed their own series of postcards portraying the beauty of our city.

For yet another year, the Science department wowed our students with a range of activities during lunch time, and showed the subject’s ability to gross out, fascinate and educate. These activities ranged from Mr Rawoot’s dissection of a rabbit, Mr. Ahmed showing the awesome and destructive power of fire and a series of challenges that encouraged our students to use their scientific mind and truly think like a scientist.

Year 9 students also completed a field work activity in Geography with Ms Cartmell where they explored various environmental issues and problems right here in Kafr Abdou. This activity involved students questioning locals on what they feel our local environmental issues are and how we can work as a community to solve them. As well as this, students had to analyse the amount of litter and dog poo in our community!

In English our Year 9 students were exposed to a variety of classic literature with students falling in love with Lennie and George from ‘Of Mice and Men’ and looking on in despair as the tragic events of Shakespeare’s classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’ unfolded before their eyes.

As well as having fantastic academic subjects,Year 9 were treated to some amazing extra-curricular experiences. In March, the Year group donned their pirate attire and headed off on the Nile Cruise, exploring various historical sites between Aswan and Luxor. A small group of students headed to Marsa Alam with Ms Terry and Mr Ahmed to gain their PADI diving qualifications and explore the beautiful marine life of the Red Sea. To top off a year of extra-curricular activities, Mr Rudd led the year group to El Alamein to witness first-hand the memorial sites and cemeteries of the Commonwealth and German forces who died in the battle for North Africa during WWII.

Year 10 Highlights The jump to IGCSE, with its high expectations and workload, has been a lot for the Year 10s. While some have thrived, others have found it a very demanding year.

“We’ve had our ups and downs with most teachers.

Year 11 Highlights The focus for Year 11 this year has been their IGCSE exams which, according to the different inclinations of individuals, were always a long way in the future or just around the corner. To say that all the students reached the end goal smoothly would be to stretch a point, particularly with the stresses of Business Studies and ICT coursework.

Whoever thought coursework was a good idea? Not many students that is for sure.

However, with much hard work from students and teachers, everything got finished and hopefully the August results will be a fair reward for all the efforts and we can all look back on a job well done.

With so much course content to get through there was not that much time to relax although the History students had a great day out at the Sadat Museum in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The highlight, according to the more culinary inclined, was Mrs. Jackson treating them all to a drink at Mecca Juice Bar!

Our Wonderful Year The Sixth Form students have all excelled this year with the effort implemented and attainment achieved in their choice of subjects, as well as the work that they have put in to acting as positive role models for the rest of the school. Under the guidance of our Head Girl, Head Boy and House Captains (a new role in the Sixth Form), they have run social gatherings such as the Halloween Disco, led school sporting events and highlighted what mature students they have become, with even their cooking skills improving!

The students conducted the Prep School Reading Scheme, acting as capable mentors for younger students in terms of developing their reading fluency and comprehension.

They also went on a fantastic overnight leadership trip where the students showcased their teamwork skills during an exhausting but very enjoyable paintball tournament!

The Sixth Form is certainly turning into a great area of strength for the school and we look to this continuing next year!

El Alamein Commemoration Seventy four years ago there was a terrible battle at El Alamain, near the north coast. Many young soldiers died and the entire site is now a cemetery and museum. A lot of the graves are simply marked "A Soldier" because their identities were not always clear.

As usual,The British School of Alexandria took part in this important ceremony which was also attended by soldiers and embassy officials from many different countries. Mr John Casson, the British Ambassador to Egypt, gave the opening address. The Prep School Choir gave performances of three songs throughout the day and these were enjoyed by everyone attending. A poem about the battle was also read out by BSA students.

The ceremony, which was held on October 21st, was also attended by a number of BSA teachers and parents, including Mr and Mrs Blakebrough.

All in all it was an important and memorable day.

International Day We had our annual International Day on the 23rd of November. As usual it was a very successful day and parents in FS and Prep got a chance to see an impressive range of costumes from around the world with not only students, but also staff, participating.

I would also like to thank the Friends of the School for all the dishes from different countries that parents produced for our students - it is easy to forget the number of nationalities that we have in the school.

Christmas Gift Box Collection We had a very successful gift box appeal at Christmas with lots of boxes wrapped and filled in Senior School for local orphanages.

This year we decided to wrap the boxes in coloured paper to make them extra bright and cheerful for the orphans that received them.

Almost every student participated in the wrapping and, what some lacked in wrapping skills, they certainly made up for in enthusiasm!

We are sure the children who received the boxes really enjoyed them.

Pre-Prep Christmas Productions Foundation Stage put on a lovely musical assembly, they all looked wonderful in their costumes and for the first year ever, we had no tears.All children did a wonderful job! Another big Thank You to the Foundation team for preparing all the children for their performance, certainly not an easy task!

Our KS1 Winter Performance this year was 'Aladdin'. A huge thank you to all the KS1 team who worked above and beyond for the 5 weeks prior to prepare the children as well as all the props and decorations.

Happy Halloween!

We had a brilliant Halloween fun packed day. The children in FS1 made some spiders, decorated some biscuits using Halloween coloured sweets and painted their hands and made some bats. The children all brought a special dish to contribute to our lunch and it was all very yummy!

We have also had both our Halloween disco organised by the School Council for the Senior School and Halloween days for Primary with some amazing costumes.

Music Concert At the end of last term we had our Music concert which was very impressive.

Performances by students included violins, drums, singing and piano and I would like to thank all our peripatetic teachers who were involved in putting on this event.

Prep Production 'The Button Box' This year’s Prep school play was ‘The Button Box’. Students excelled in their singing and dancing skills, they have also painted the backdrop themselves and did a great job.

Year 6 particularly enjoyed Drama and preparing for their key roles in the production. Everyone did a fantastic job!

Nile Cruise Our annual Year 9 Nile Cruise took place in March this year and, as usual, was a resounding success.The students had a wonderful time taking in the sights of Upper Egypt while sailing along the magnificent River Nile.

As well as visiting all the major historic sights, the students also enjoyed dressing up in traditional costume for the galabeya party on board the boat and bargaining in the souks of Aswan and Luxor.

Computer Science Week We have celebrated computer science week in Prep and Pre-prep, giving all the pupils the opportunity to complete coding and computer programming activities. It was great to see so many skills being demonstrated across the range of activities. Pupils from FS1 all the way to Year 6 have shown excellent programming skills, there are definitely some future computer programmers at the BSA. For those interested in completing more computer science activities there are hundreds of links and games available on the hour of code website: https://code.org/learn Students in Senior School have been using Google Cardboard and VR apps to look at how VR can change our lives and potential uses for it in the future. Students were making 360 walk throughs of where they live and where they come to school. Y10 students gave Y8s a lesson on using BBC Microbit Computers, which was really fun. Students Yassein, Lina, Mohamed, Mariam and Bahira demonstrated good Computer Science knowledge as well as great leadership skills in planning and delivering a lesson using technology new to the BSA. Finally Y5 students came over to my classroom in the Euclid building to refresh their knowledge of binary numbers and create webpages using HTML.

Science Week in Primary Science Week (22nd - 26th April 2018) was a great success in Prep and Pre Prep. Each year group adopted a theme around which to plan learning, and every child experienced some hands-on or practical work.

The week started with all children in Years 6 -3 seeing a presentation on six Egyptian scientists who changed the world.

A good number of Prep children entered the competition “A famous scientist and their contribution to science”.

The range and diversity of scientists was impressive, with women and countries featuring across the year groups. Some of the scientists that children researched included Mary Anning from UK, Dr Deborah Persaud from Guyana, astronaut Sally Ride from USA, Prof Hatice Altug from Turkey and Professor Stephen Hawking.

Children in Year 6 investigated electricity by asking questions such as “How does the length of the wire affect the brightness of the bulb?”.

They also used parallel circuits to make model houses with working electricity.

Year 5 looked at differences between the park and the local streets to raise awareness of the issue of rubbish in our city. Year 4 investigated sound and an example of their work included discussing how the thickness of a rubber band affects the pitch of the sound.

Year 3 had great fun with with light, colour and plants and this included a shadow investigation, separating colours and learning about the different types of seed dispersal.

Year 2 designed a suitable habitat for their animals. Year 1 designed and made weather vanes and used them to investigate the weather here in Alexandria. They also been worked collaboratively in English lessons to research famous Egyptian scientists and create non chronological reports.

FS 2 did some fair testing, mixing different liquids and exploding paint! They used ramps to investigate how far a car would travel and FS 1 investigated freezing and melting.

At the end of the week, parents and families came into school to see all the learning in which the children were involved. It was very encouraging to see so many parents in school.

Science Week in Senior School The second week back after the Easter Holidays saw Senior School celebrate Science Week with a flurry of activities. With the current emphasis round the world on “fake news”, Ms Carvalho’s assembly and a series of Form Time activities focused on how we can use the methods of science to help separate fact from fiction.

In Science lessons themselves all students undertook special investigations over the week. Year 7 looked at how a sinking ship would be affected by the saltiness of the water. Years 8 and 10, meanwhile, looked at how to design effective parachutes before launching them from the fourth floor of Euclid.Year 9 looked at the diffusion of blood through water and debunked the myth that sharks can smell blood from long distances.

During lunchtimes enthusiastic crowds came up to the labs to see each of the sciences demonstrate how they could be fun. Mr Rawoot dissected a duck, to equal gasps of fascination and disgust. Mr Ahmed celebrated Chemistry by setting fire to lots of things, including several students! In the Physics department Mr Bostock came within a few centimetres of destroying his daughter’s iPod with a dropped kilogram of metal, whilst Mr Asif challenged the students to become engineers by building tall structures using just spaghetti and marshmallows.

Running throughout the week were a Science Quiz for Year 7 and a model-building competition for all Year groups.

The Science Department is currently debating who were the most fervent contributors to the week from amongst the students. A lucky few will be invited to a special BBQ hosted by us, the Science team, where we will discuss all things geeky!

Primary Book Week Book week 2018 was a hugely successful week which focused on poetry and performance. All children in Prep and Pre-prep learnt a poem by heart, with the older children performing their chosen poem to their year group and, using specific success criteria, assessing each other. Children then voted and the best of each year group recited their poems in our Book Week assemblies.Alongside the recitals, many competitions took place, including ‘guess how many books are in the library’, a design a bookmark competition and an extreme reading photo challenge.

The children took part in these competitions with vigour and some amazing artwork, plus hilarious photos were sent in.

Each child also chose their favourite story and created a story hat to promote it. School council judged the winners. The competition was tough and the hats looked phenomenal when all worn to assembly.

Thank you to all the children who took part and parents who supported them. I think we definitely have some future poets in our midst!

Creative Arts Week We had our Creative Arts week at the beginning of June for the whole school. In Pre-Prep we shared lots of good ideas with Miss Evans on what we would like to do for art week. We wanted to do some Ramadan Art so we designed our own shape mosques by looking at different mosques.

In Senior School, students have attended workshops at lunchtime and have designed some amazing portraits for this special week.

Diving Trip “The Diving Trip is literally one of the only must-go trips in the BSA. Not only is it the most fun, but also it combines hard work and amusement together.You get to dive, which is like a portal to another world seeing all the different fish and other types of sea creatures in their natural habitats living their normal lives. Even with the twister, I enjoyed this trip even more than the Nile Cruise (and not because after the tornado we got upgraded to the largest suites they had). So, in my opinion, I think that the diving trip was the best trip until now, and I’d recommend it for everyone in the BSA.” Moustafa Abdelaal, Year 9 “Adventures, awareness, peace, tranquility and relaxation...The Diving Trip was a trip to be remembered throughout my life, getting to see a new world and experience the life of a fish. Learning the way to survive and learning skills and how to adapt these skills and use them in the worst conditions. Moreover, the magnificent underwater scenes will stay with me forever. I can’t wait to dive with my family now!” Fadel Tahio, Year 9 The Diving Trip was the best trip and it was really a true life-changing experience that I will remember my entire life. The trip got even better when the sandstorm happened because it was like living through an adventure. The diving itself was amazing - a unique experience to remember.We also got our Open Water Diver’s License that will give us the chance to dive again in the future. Model United Nations The BSA has participated in two MUN Conferences this year. Students have represented a range of countries and considered issues that have global significance. This has included; nuclear disarmament, gender inequality, treatment of guestworkers and resolving the Rohingya refugee crisis. In the process of attempting to find resolution to these problems, delegates have learnt about the workings of the United Nations, team work and public speaking skills. They have made new friends and had a lot of fun. “MUN made me feel curious about the issues that are happening around the world. It also boosted my confidence through public speaking. Sustainable Development Goals Competition This year the BSA had two teams participate in the COBIS Sustainable Development Goals Competition. The aim of the competition is to encourage students to develop as global citizens, by making a difference in their local community, and enhance their leadership skills. Each team focused on a UN Sustainable Development Goal and raised money to help an organisation in Alexandria working in that area. All the girls who participated, worked hard and learnt a lot in the process.

The teams raised money with a variety of methods; bake sales, stall at the BSA Spring Bazaar and even hosting a party. They were very independent in arranging these events and adapting to meet the challenges they faced.

They raised LE1800 for a children’s cancer hospital here in Alexandria and raised LE 4800, which was used to buy resources for a government school in Ezbet El Saydin.

The Leadership Programme This year has seen some outstanding candidates take up the leadership challenge. We took a slightly different route to the previous year and focused on the creation of leadership seminars, each with a different theme. Students completed activities based on communication, teamwork, public speaking, conflict resolution and increasing motivation.

The students have done admirably and following these seminars, came up with their overall project for the year during a weekend workshop. They have created a Student Voice website, similar to an online newspaper, detailing events that have happened during the school year, conducted polls related to students directly and we aim to keep this going into next year and beyond. Congratulations to all for working so hard!

Maths Department Maths around the world Maths week gave an opportunity to students to explore Mathematics in a context not usually explored within the classroom. During Maths week we explored Maths from different cultures and backgrounds.

On each day of the week we looked at a different continent and picked an ancient aspect of Maths and explored its wonders in today’s world. Students are offered numerous enrichment opportunities which were aimed to increase the enjoyment and participation of the subject some of which are detailed below.

Sunday - Europe On Sunday we looked at Greek and Roman mathematicians and how their work influenced the world we live in today. In particular, the Greek philosopher Pythagoras whose theorem read that there is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. It states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Students also researched the complex system of Roman numerals and how it was used to solve mathematical problems during Roman times and how it has continued to present day.

Monday - Asia On Monday students were given activities based around Chinese and Indian mathematical techniques. An example is Vedic Mathematics which is a unique technique of calculations based on simple principles and rules, with which any mathematical problem can be solved mentally. Some of these techniques emerged from ancient China and India.

Students also explored The Chinese Method, also known as the stick multiplication method, which uses sticks to solve multiplication problems.

Tuesday - Africa On Tuesday we looked at the history of ancient Egyptian mathematics and how it was used thousands of years ago. Students learnt how ancient Egyptians multiplied numbers, including 2 and -3digit numbers, and used unit fractions to solve some everyday problems. We also investigated patterns that lead us to believe that ancient Egyptians may have unknowingly used a form of binary numbers to help them multiply. It is fascinating to think how binary numbers originating thousands of years ago are used in our computers today!

Wednesday – North and South America On Wednesday we explored how the Mayan civilisation constructed a very sophisticated number system and used it for astronomy and calendar calculations. This subject is a must for the enthusiastic star gazer.

The students were enthralled by this system and eagerly asked a plethora of questions about this topic - there will be no excuses for getting any dates wrong now!

Thursday - Islamic Mathematics In the final day of Maths week we created beautiful Islamic patterns using mathematical skills. Students used geometric shapes to construct their own Islamic patterns and then colour them in. The students thoroughly enjoyed this tactile approach to Mathematics and they were able to visualize patterns and sequences which was fantastic for visual and kinesthetic learners.

Games around the world During lunch time students were given an opportunity to try several different board games which are played in specific countries in the world such as Jirig from Mongolia, Nine Holes from England, Dara from Nigeria, Trique from Colombia and Achi from Ghana. Students had to use critical thinking skills and essential problem-solving attitudes while gaining an appreciation for world cultures.There was great participation and these clubs where students and teachers pitted their wits against each other. Sorry teacher, the students won!

Science Department Science plays an important part in all of our lives and knowledge of its processes and applications can be experienced in many different ways. This year, we have strived to give students rigour and challenge in their understanding of the syllabus, whilst also giving them numerous opportunities to experience science outside the classroom.

During our first Extended Curriculum day of the year, we visited Pharco pharmaceuticals company.

It was a great opportunity for our Sixth Form students to observe how Science is applied on an industrial basis, and the different techniques that are implemented to produce various medicines.

Watching hundreds of pills being produced per minute was fascinating!

In the summer term Extended Curriculum day, we rejoiced with our Year 8s in our love of food. We looked into the importance of hygiene in the food industry, the chemical reactions that make food so tasty and we finished off by cooking a feast!

This year the Science Department has made a special effort to engage with the wider community.

We visited a local orphanage for whom the Science team and the 6th form student body raised money and purchased various food, clothing and sports equipment items. The generosity of our pupils and their parents was awe-inspiring and I am sure we will continue to support these institutions in years to come.

I must take this opportunity to thank all the Science Department staff who shared their passion, enthusiasm, and time with our students. A special thank you also to our examination classes who have worked extremely hard this term and I am sure their determination will be rewarded with excellent exam results.

Modern Foreign Languages Department The MFL department has been busy again this year. In the Senior School pupils have enjoyed watching French films with subtitles in English, thus improving listening skills in French and reading skills in English!

Pupils studying German have enjoyed reading a novel in German. Pupils have developed their language skills through competitions and games and their ‘working with others’ skills have improved through using Kagan cooperative learning techniques.

Pupils have learning buddies so that they can learn from each other and, after being initially hesitant about this, they now really appreciate how it is helping them to learn. Year 7 loved their French breakfast, as did Year 4 pupils who practised their French by ordering food and drink. Primary pupils have developed their French skills through dance, song and drama, culminating in performances in assemblies. They have also been involved in cross-curricular activities using French in both Science and Maths lessons.

PSHE Department A highlight of this year was the Extended Curriculum Day in which the PHSE and Arabic departments teamed up to deliver a very informative and exciting day of activities for all Year 10 students.

Year 10 was split into two, with one group remaining in school in the morning to take part in two workshops (Gaming Addiction and Internet Safety), and the other group going on an offsite visit to museums and then take part in a global citizenship project on the Corniche.

During the afternoon these groups swapped over so all students had the opportunity to take part in all the activities.

In the Gaming Addiction group, the students learned about the dangers of gaming addiction and the adverse psychological and physical effects this has. They learned that gaming addiction has very similar characteristics to that of substance misuse and how lives become unmanageable for the addict. The students then made a presentation to be used in the future in assemblies to help raise awareness of the grave problem facing many young people throughout the world.

In the Internet Safety Workshop students learned many of the facets of staying safe on-line and were given a presentation about this. The culmination of the presentation and student input led to the second part of the workshop in which they presented their ideas by making a poster or created a presentation using computers. The material produced will also be used in the future for raising awareness amongst the other students in the school about on line safety.

During the off site experience, the students visited two museums and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina where they improved their study and research skills ably led by the Arabic Department. They also learned about sociological, historical and political perspectives which are all embedded in the PSHE curriculum. The experience gave our students knowledge of our local area and the opportunity to interact with many people from the general public, thus improving their social and emotional learning.

The students then took part in a Global Citizenship Project on the Corniche. During Environmental Week earlier in the term the students had been made aware of the devastating effect plastic has on the coastal environment. The students worked unstintingly to remove plastic and other litter from the beach in the time they had and this waste was then disposed of responsibly. The students received many positive comments from the public on the work they had done.

A big thank you for all staff and students who took part in the PHSE Extended Curriculum Day to make it a memorable, valuable, exciting and enjoyable learning experience for all involved.

English Department The place was Heron Hall and ‘Murder’ was the name of the game for the two CIBSA and ISAAA events held in the Spring term. The BSA hosted students from Cairo and Alexandria on both events, including BISC and Schutz. Talented detectives (who in their former lives had been students) from Years 6, 7 and 8 worked in teams to try and piece together clues, make sense of advanced vocabulary and watch video testimonies by the suspects (our gifted 6th Form method actors, who went deeply in role for this) in order to try and crack the case.

The students had a great time working together on a challenging yet fun activity and it was really beneficial for them to work with new faces as well as old, familiar ones.

The question remains, however….Who killed Ms Ann Nonymous? Has the right villain been apprehended or are they still at large? We’ll find out if Murder strikes Heron Hall again!

Physical Education Department It has been a very busy and successful year in PE. We have put in place a new curriculum to give students new experiences and activities to try alongside some of the more established sports and activities. This has included new out of school activities for our Sixth Form Students.

We would like to thank all students who have attended the After School Activities in Sport and all those that attended additional training sessions to help further their learning and prepare them for matches against other schools.

Students have also taken part in highly competitive House Competitions including Multi-skill Circuits, End-ball, Table Tennis, Dodgeball, Volleyball, Basketball, Football and of course Sports Day. Students played with tremendous spirit and really engaged with the competition as they strove to do their very best for each other and their Houses.

Fixtures and tournaments have also taken a prominent role this year with the BSA sending out teams in Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Dodgeball and Swimming. All the teams have done really well and been fantastic representatives of the school, with opponents and other school teachers regularly commenting both on the students’ excellent characters and sportsmanship. Particular mentions should go to the Year 3 and 4 Football Team who, for the first time in the school’s history, won the CIBSA Football event in Cairo – a tremendous achievement by all involved in the team. Our Senior Swimming team also remarkably won all of their races at CIBSA, helping the school to an overall and commendable third position.

The PE Department would like to thank all students and staff for their contributions and efforts in making this a hugely successful year.

Arabic Department The Arabic department has done a lot of hard work to inspire our students to do their best. We have held inter-year group competitions focusing on different branches of the Arabic language. In addition, we fostered our students› general knowledge which helped improve their performance in classes, encouraging them to answer all kinds of unfamiliar questions and to be able to work in teams.

Moreover, we motivated pupils to read more so they could be more confident using the Arabic language in many different fields. We also offered extra revision sessions which helped push their levels forward. They were guided to work in groups of different abilities so they could have a good influence on each other. We achieved useful as well as enjoyable lessons in which we could promote excellence in our students' learning.

The Arabic Department in the Primary School had a set of objectives for this academic year in accordance with an international education. We held a number of workshops in which students produced lovely work and showed both their creativity and their understanding of the academic goals.

IT Department This year the IT curriculum has continued to focus on how we can use technology smartly, while the Computer Science curriculum has focused on providing students with the skills and knowledge to build technology that will solve the problems of tomorrow.

Year 7 students have been spending time considering their digital literacy. This has involved increasing their awareness of the dangers they may face online, while also discovering techniques and actions they can take to ensure their safety when using the Internet to advance learning, entertainment and discovery of the world.

The curricula of Year 8 and 9 have seen students developing their programming skills and knowledge through the development of computer programs using platforms and languages such as Small Basic and Python.

The department is currently moving away from just being a place where students use IT, to a place where students can engage in logical and critical thinking whilst also developing skills to resolve problems through technology. All of this opens up exciting possibilities for students next year.

Art Department Here are examples of work that some Year 9 students did in a drawing workshop. Salma Osman did a fantastic pencil and mark-making drawing of shells and Joud Ismail made a bold outline of a seahorse.

Ms Parr Head of Art Year 7 learnt how to make 3D sculpture animals this year and also learnt how to draw from real life, developing their skills by drawing trees and birds. They also learnt about Aboriginal art and artists. All the students tried very hard and I am proud of them.

Humanities Department The department has been firing on full cylinders this academic year. A vast range of academic experiences has left our students buzzing with intellectual excitement.They have been treated to the Roman experience investigating the Catacombs to a beach study on the Corniche, brushing up on fieldwork skills and enquiry processes. We pride ourselves in being creative and always promote the department with pride. whether it’s interactive and attractive wall displays to imaginative pieces of homework like Norman castle design projects and African collaborative presentations. In Environmental Week the students even designed a logo which is now used as the official sticker on all of the BSA reusable water bottles!

The Year 7 students were given the homework task of creating a medieval castle based on the knowledge that they have developed in our lessons.The attention to detail was incredible and the students managed to reflect key features of both motte and bailey and the later stonebuilt castles using a range of materials and ideas.

The Year 9 Geography students have been presenting their research into a hazard caused by tectonic plate movement. They chose either a volcanic eruption, earthquake or tsunami and had to present on the cause and consequence of the event.

Year 8 recently visited the historic town of Rasheed.They found out about its long history dating back to the ancient Egyptians through to present day.They visited Rasheed Museum, housed in an Ottoman building and, Qaitbey Fort, where the Rosetta stone was discovered in 1799.

The Year 8 took a two day visit to the pyramids in Cairo. They visited all three pyramid sites. Starting with Saqqara, the earliest of the pyramids, Dashur and finally Giza pyramids. For many it was their first time to visit them. For the daring, there was a chance to go inside two pyramids and ride a camel.

The Year 8 Coastal Processes Year 8 students visited Manadara beach to investigate and try out field work skills including long-shore drift and beach profiling. The students worked in teams using a variety of Geography instruments to gather valuable data for their studies and further their understanding of coastal processes.

The Year 7 City Centre Shopping Patterns Trip When spending most of the day at City Centre, our students were perfect role models when dealing with the public. The students asked shoppers questions to allow them to get their hands on valuable data for the fieldwork enquiry back at school. Some shoppers refused to answer the questions, giving our students a taste of real-life interactions with the public for later life. I’m sure there will be some excellent projects written using this primary data about shopping habits.

The Year 9 El Alamein Trip In May,Year 9 students visited El Alamein to develop their understanding of a vital battle during the Second World War.The importance of this battle cannot be understated and the students were engaged throughout the trip.

Throughout the visit to the cemetery, war memorial and museum, the students were a credit to the school and added to their local historic knowledge of events that have happened in Egypt.

Friends of School

In early October, Friends of School got off to a flying start with the Annual Gala Dinner hosted by HM Consul General, Wendy Freeman, held in the Consulate garden. It was a fine evening with superb food and entertainment and raised LE28,600 for the Rachid Children’s Cancer Hospital in Shatby, here in Alexandria.

In the middle of November, we held our International Day which was a huge success with a record number of countries being represented. This was followed by our December Shoe Box Appeal, again well supported by students and parents and the boxes were distributed to a number of orphanages and welfare institutions in Alexandria.

A huge amount of work went on behind the scenes to put on this year’s Spring Bazaar and a fun and entertaining afternoon was enjoyed by increased numbers of parents and students.Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we raised LE36,600 to divide between the charities Fairhaven (caring for children with disabilities) and Caritas (looking after street children).

Our ongoing Pizza Days made a profit which is not only put towards organising our various events, but is also used to buy baby formula milk throughout the year for the orphanages Bambi and Radwan.

In the summer term, Friends of School organised the collection of Ramadan packs and also baby formula milk which we distributed to our main charities. We also sponsored Mr Abbott’s project of metal water bottles (and provided the labels) for sale in school as part of our effort to cut down on the amount of plastic we are using in our community.

Friends of School has a dedicated core of volunteers but we always welcome new helpers, however much or however little you can offer in terms of time and effort. Together we make a great team and are very thankful for the support and generosity of parents without whom our activities would not be possible.

Behind the scenes This year has seen the start of a major project for the school, our new BSA campus in Shalalat and is a major milestone that we have been looking forward to for a long time. The new campus will offer more facilities and will accommodate the growing number of students, especially when the three forms in each Year group move to the Senior School.

The Administration offices have moved to a new site, Nefertiti Villa, to give more space in Wilson building to our expanding Prep school.We welcomed a new member to our team in April, Mr Karim Ibrahim, our new Registrar, who has been a great addition.

As usual, I would like to thank all the Administration team for their support and dedication throughout the year and look forward to another successful year at the BSA.

At the school, there is a team of cleaners, security guards, maintenance men, gardeners and messengers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide support to the school.

This year has been another busy one with a number of developments and changes. Over the summer, the team had a programme of maintenance work in all areas of the school in preparation for the new academic year. Then, during this academic year, the team helped with the organisation of several events like the Gala Dinner held in the beautiful Consulate gardens, the annual Bambi Picnic, International Day, the Spring Bazar and Sports Day. This is all in addition to the restoration of the Wilson building, turning the rooms back into classrooms, and the renovation of Nefertiti Villa which now houses the Administration team.
