Patron’s Message I was very proud to be asked to take on the role of Patron of the British School Alexandria following my arrival in January.

The British School, Alexandria plays an important role in promoting British education in Alexandria, strengthening educational, social and cultural ties between Alexandria and the UK and helping to represent Britain in this wonderful Mediterranean city.

I enjoyed meeting staff, parents and pupils at the School Bazaar in March and was very grateful for the warm welcome afforded to me.

I congratulate the school on completing another successful year and I look forward to supporting BSA and fulfilling my new role to the best of my abilities in the year to come.

Chair of Governors Foreword As the British School rolls on into its fourth decade, it still manages to retain the youthful enthusiasm of the pupils who give it such life. It is an exciting place to be involved in and provides much to be proud of.

The pursuit of academic excellence continues and this year two of our students received the highest IGCSE marks in Mathematics in the world, two others were top in Business Studies and History in Africa, and yet others had the best results in different subjects in Egypt and Alexandria.While the individual students are to be congratulated, so too is the teaching staff and indeed the entire School community for creating an environment where such achievements can be realised.

Of course, a school is not just its exam results, and the BSA is committed to developing students with well-rounded life skills.This year we have seen the launch of the Student Leadership programme, which has proven to be extremely successful, with students from both the Senior and Prep departments participating. Our new Cleopatra Campus for KS1 students is not just additional classroom space, but also features a vegetable garden and a turtle pond. For the first time ever the BSA sent a team to the COBIS World Debating Competition in Malaga, Spain, where the team made it through to the quarterfinals against very stiff competition. The Science and Humanities Field Trip to Cyprus was another first that allowed for the essential combination of education and life experience.

And there is so much more to relate, from sporting events to theatrical performances‌.

Behind the scenes somewhat, we have conducted a major review of governance structure and have doubled the number of active governors, thus providing extra capacity to support the BSA in all its endeavours.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank all the students, staff and parents for making the school year 2016-2017 such a success, and we look forward to working with you all in the cause of education and progress.

Principal’s Message We aim to be a school where students excel in their learning and are prepared for life and leadership.

This year we are fortunate to have lots of excellent teachers in the school, right the way through from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form. We also put an emphasis on the continuing professional development of our staff. This year has seen a major training initiative for our Teaching Assistants together with the introduction of a Teaching and Learning Community to further develop teaching methods and a range of training relating to the use of Google Apps in everyday teaching.

We now have our new campus, Cleopatra, for our Year 1 and Year 2 students which is fully functioning complete with turtles and tortoises.

We have much improved library facilities managed by two librarians. Although there are still several hurdles to be overcome, the possibility of a new school site for September 2018 is now looking more hopeful.

We have made changes to the curriculum including “Mastery Maths” and “Personal Goals” in Primary, together with the new Enrichment periods and a greater choice of courses in Senior. In Primary we have a new assessment system based on where a child is, in relation to curriculum objectives, either “Emerging”, “Expected” or “Exceeding”.

Our Student Leadership group has really taken off and they successfully led our first “Spirit Week” which sought to further develop harmonious relationships and wellbeing within the school.

We believe in the importance of the BSA interacting with the local community. We have been involved in a range of charity work and fundraising including working with local orphanages, providing equipment for a hospital in Shatby, and raising money for Red Nose day which supports children’s charities world-wide. We are also working with local schools to develop English Teaching in collaboration with the Institute of Education, part of the University of London and a summer school in July for local children.

We currently have our largest ever Sixth Form with Mr Rudd having been appointed Head of Sixth Form in January to further develop this expanding area.

A measure of the success of our Sixth Form is the number of students going to a range of top class Universities both in Egypt and abroad.

I look forward to the opportunities that the new academic year will bring for BSA and building on the success achieved in this current year.

Pre-Prep School "It always seems impossible until it's done" Nelson Mandela.

That's it, another year complete in Pre-Prep and what a wonderful year it has been! We started out in August full of anticipation and excitement for the year ahead and looking forward to all the fun learning planned for the year. We are now able to look back on that year with pride and accomplishment and lots of fantastic memories! Themed days, sports days, fundraising events, trips, plays, class assemblies are some of the highlights of our year but of course the biggest highlight of all is to see all the progress each child and class has made throughout the year.

I am very lucky to work with such a wonderful team in Pre-Prep, people who continue to make it the wonderful place that it is, people who continuously give 100 % and more to ensure the children are always the centre of everything we do; for that I want to say a huge "thank you" to all our teachers, teaching assistants, security, cleaners and of course Ms Lama our school administrator!

Foundation Stage 1 Red

Halloween FS1 Red have had such a marvelous year and have done so many fun things. Halloween was such a great time for us as a class. The children really began to gel as a little family and we all had such an amazing day. We all dressed up in spooky and kooky costumes to celebrate this creepy time of year.We visited the other FS1 classes and joined in with lots of exciting and interesting activities, such as making spiders, feeding a scary monster, catching marshmallows from a spooky potion without using our hands, exploring the texture and smell of pumpkins. Then we shared lots of delicious food that the children had brought in for their friends. The scary cupcakes went down particularly well! It really was a fantastic day where we all had an amazing time and our friendships were consolidated on this wonderfully spooky day!

Foundation Stage 1 Blue

Pistache Bakery In term 2 FS1 Blue went on a trip to Pistache Bakery. At the bakery we met the chef who showed us how to make cupcakes. He mixed flour, eggs, milk and baking powder together with a noisy electric whisk. The chef helped us to make our own Gruffalo cupcake.

We covered the cupcake with chocolate icing and sprinkles. We carefully added the Gruffalo’s orange eyes, sharp teeth, green wart and terrible tusks that were made from different coloured icing sugar and chocolate. We also made a witches broom lollypop and a Room on the Broom biscuit. We took all our treats home and they were delicious!

Foundation Stage 1 White

Our Julia Donaldson topic This Year FS1 White have had a great journey through different stories.

We especially loved sharing books by Julia Donaldson. We began by reading "Monkey Puzzle" which helped us think about how our mummy is always there for us and enjoyed laughing at the different animals that butterfly tried to match to the monkey. We created lovely paintings and drawings linked to the stories and even wrote a thank you letter to ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. We were feeling squashed and squeezed when we read about the old lady complaining about the size of her home.

“What the Lady bird Heard” was one of our favourites as we joined in with mixing up all of the animals voices to trick Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len.The cats said “OINK” and the goose said “NEIGH” then the duck said “QUACK” the thieves would never be on the right track!

Calling all Dinosaur lovers!

FS2 red became amateur paleontologists during our Dinosaur topic this year. We researched that the oldest dinosaur fossils found on earth were from 228 million years ago which is certainly much older than our parents or grandparents! We enjoyed looking at what the world was like before us humans ever existed and looking at the various types of different looking species that existed back then!

In order to understand the lifecycle of a dinosaur, we made our own baby dinosaur ice eggs to show how small baby dinosaurs hatched out of their shells and then grew up into large, strong dinosaurs who roamed our earth! To hatch eggs, we witnessed the ice slowly melt but also had fun smashing the eggs open outside to rescue the baby dinosaur inside!

We learnt that dinosaurs are either carnivores whom only eat meat, herbivores whom only eat plants or omnivores whom eat both meat and plants in order to help them grow big and strong. When dinosaurs eventually became extinct and ceased to exist, we learned that we can learn lots about what dinosaurs may have looked like by studying the imprint of their bones into mud, sand and clay. Using salt dough, we got our hands messy to make our very own dinosaur fossils. We tried to guess and identify which dinosaur fossil we could recognise looking at the different features and size of each dinosaur. Super reasoning and collaboration skills were showcased and lots of fun was had by all our class!

Foundation Stage 2 Blue

Superheroes FS2 Blue loved learning about Superheroes in Term 2. We worked very hard painting a superhero mural in the roleplay area so that we could use our imagination to be superheros, driving the supercar and saving our friends! We also made our own supercars using junk. First we planned and drew our supercar then we chose our junk and stuck it together. We painted our models and decorated them to make them look amazing! We ended our topic with a Superhero Day where we all wore our favourite heroes costume. We had a lovely day playing football, parachute games, colouring and getting our face painted with the rest of FS2.

Foundation Stage 2 White

Turtle Talk Did you know that in Cleopatra Campus you will find a special habitat where terrapins and turtles live? It was designed by our wildlife experts, Mr Germain and Mr Wynne, as a learning resource for the children – and it is amazing! During the Spring term, FS2 White asked if they could visit the turtles as part of their topic work. Mr Wynne, who works in Cleopatra Villa, offered to lead the session. As you can see from the photos, we had a fantastic time! First, we were introduced to the turtles, Susie and Maximus. Susie was sleeping in her little cave and Maximus was tucking into a breakfast of cucumber and carrots.

Mr Wynne allowed us to gently stroke Maximus’s shell to feel how bumpy and hard it was. We had a good look at his head, his four legs and his little tail. Then we were introduced to the terrapins. They love to swim and can hold their breath for 10-5 minutes under the water.

They eat special fish pellets as well as the bugs and larvae they find in the water. Mr Wynne gave us magnifying glasses so that we could look closely at samples of pond water and see the larvae wriggling around.

He told us the terrapins love to escape from their enclosure if they can, and crawl over to the sand pit. They remind me of the turtles in Costa Rica that drag themselves up onto the beach and lay their eggs in the sand!

The children in FS2 can’t wait until next year when they will be moving to Cleopatra Villa. They will be able to help take care of the terrapins and turtles and see them every day!

Year 1 Red

Hide and Seek In Year 1 Red this year one of the things we have learnt is how to write instructions. We learnt that instruction writing is very important as it is used in texts like recipes and games.

One of the instruction texts we wrote was "How to play Hide and Seek" First we had to go into the playground and play it so we could find out the numbered steps.

When we played it, we came back to class to discuss what we would need to write. Then we looked at some numbered steps cut up and had to put them in the right order, Finally, we wrote our own set of instructions using time connectives, bossy verbs and numbered steps clearly laid out. We had lots of fun!

Super Chefs In Year 1 Blue we have had plenty of opportunities to become chefs this year. We have planned and made lots of tasty dishes including a juicy fruit salad, a deliciously healthy vegetable soup and tastiest of all, some super sweet rocky road. We used chopping skills to prepare all the ingredients and mixed all them all together to make these delicious things. But best of all we got to eat all of the tasty food when we had finished. So if you need some delicious food look no further than Year 1 Blue.

Teamwork

Together everyone achieves more !

The children in Year 1 White have been following their personal goals of cooperation and communication to work successfully as a team throughout the year.Teamwork is such an important skills to learn and the children have understood what amazing things can be achieved by working together in all subjects.

Teamwork has been displayed by the children in many different areas of the curriculum. We worked together in Maths to sort numbers; estimate and measure the length of objects. In English, we became experts in different topics related to Seasons and shared information and ideas. In Topic, we worked together to make super Seasonal Art using different media. In ICT, we became human robots to be programmed and given instructions by our friends.

Year 2 Red

Outdoor Learning This year has seen Year 2 Red take a leading role in helping to develop and use Cleopatra garden area.

It started in the Autumn term, when we planted a range of fruit and vegetables. The first things that we planted were potatoes.

These started as seeds on our balcony and then when ready, were planted in our planting beds. In the Spring term, we turned these into crisps and ate them.

Year 2 Blue

Red Nose Day For Red Nose Day this year, we tried to ‘Make our Laugh Matter’ so we all came into school dressed in funny accessories. In FS, we had lots of fun and we had a bake sale where teachers got busy baking cakes! We also made a large art mural to decorate our outside area and did some funny dancing! In Years 1 & 2, we also had a bake sale where we donated homemade cakes and we made our own in class. Parents were invited in and we had a range of activities such as face painting, Pin the Nose on the Teacher and Zumba! We also had a sponsored talent show where we showed our hobbies and skills to our friends. It was so much fun and altogether in Prep-Prep we raised 13,238 EGP!

Year 2 White

World Water Day “When I’m brushing my teeth and having so much fun, I never let the water run!”

In March this year we celebrated World Water Day. In class we learnt all about how in some countries in Africa, not far from where we live in Egypt, some children have to walk miles and miles to get water for their families. They use this often dirty water, to have a shower, to drink and to cook. We are very lucky!

When we are at home, all we have to do is go to the bathroom or to the kitchen and turn on the tap and we have clean running water to use. We learnt about how we need to look after the water we have. For example when we brush our teeth we can turn off the tap in between to avoid wasting extra water.

All the children in the Cleopatra building had a water race in the garden.

We used some water which had been left behind the day before in the classrooms to fill 6 cups. Each class had a cup of water to carry during the relay race. Our class weren’t the fastest class, but we were one of the winners as we were able to complete the race while saving water. In the end we had the most water in our cup. Hooray!

Prep School

Prep School It has been another successful year in the Prep school with lots of exciting events and trips that have taken place. One of the highlights was the Prep play ‘The Keymaster’. All students excelled in showing their acting talents and their singing was fabulous too.

Year 3 & Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the ranch where they were able to complete different art and craft activities. Year 5 really enjoyed their overnight trips to Cairo and the Sports4Life camp and Year 6 had a fantastic time in the UK at the PGL camp. Students have learnt to become more independent and this shows in their increased confidence. Our Prep school ‘Fun Day’ is also another highlight of this year as it was full of fun and laughter for all.

As the year comes to an end I would like to take the chance to thank the students for their hard work and dedication towards their learning. I am very grateful to work with such wonderful children and I know the rest of the staff feel the same.

I would like to thank the parents for their continued support. Last, but by no means least I would like to thank teachers, teaching assistants, adminstration and campus staff for their hard work. Without all of these people we wouldn’t have been able to create memories and exciting opportunities for students.

I look forward to working with you all again next academic year and welcoming the new Year 3.

Highlights The year 3 Red curriculum is full and varied and we’ve had a very busy and exciting year developing our learning in lots of different ways. In English we’ve looked at a wide range of Fiction and Non-Fiction texts, one of our favorite stories which we studied in depth was ‘The Day the Crayons Quit.’ The children enjoyed writing lots of letters to Duncan expressing their various feelings about how they were being treated and why they wanted to quit. The children were able imagine their own humorous conversations with the crayons and share it within their writing.

In Maths, we have worked extremely hard to develop our problem solving and reasoning through activities such as, worded problems, finding all possibilities, working systematically and patterns. We experienced things in lots of different contexts and the children enjoyed the many opportunities to talk about each one. As a class we developed our artistic skills through the Artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, who is best known for her paintings of magnificent flowers. The children enjoyed observing, discussing and experimenting using different types of media in order to create their own.

Our Science experiments were always fun, especially when learning about forces. A highlight of this is when we decided to do a class experiment to see how different surfaces would affect how far a toy car could travel. The children had an amazing time and could explain why things moved differently.

Year 3 Blue have had a fun filled year with lots of learning in the classroom as well as through trips and special fun days. They enjoyed trips to Fagnoon and Rouqayah’s Ranch where they learnt a range of skills such as clay pot making, bread making, planting crops and much more. They had great fun bonding with their classmates on these trips which made them all become good friends as a year group. Year 3 also enjoyed lots of fun days at school in which they got to dress up and enjoy themselves whilst learning lots and lots. Their favourite days included International Day as they got to learn about lots of countries all over the world as well as enjoying some nice food from different countries. They also had a great time getting active on Red Nose Day as they were motivated to raise money for people who were living in poverty all over the world. It has been a great year for both the pupils and the teachers and they all have lots of great memories to look back on.

Highlights Year 4 have had an exciting and fun packed year. We have developed our academic skills through hard work and creative projects. We have worked hard to develop our personal goals such as cooperation and resilience.

The puppet workshop was our Christmas treat.We were very lucky to have Artopia come into school to show us how to make Father Christmas and Snowman puppets. It was fascinating to see the skill required to carefully glue together the various parts and to make sure the puppet still moved.

The students had great fun making these and then selling them at the Christmas Bazaar.

Water Aid is a charity which provides safe drinking water for people all over the world. We thought this issue was very important to us especially learning so much about water in our topic and about water scarcity in Egypt and other African countries. So we put ourselves in the shoes of thousands of children who have to walk miles every day to get safe drinking water. We walked around the field over 10 times carrying water buckets, trying to not spill any.

It was very hard!

Finally, we had an awesome trip to Rouqayah’s Ranch. The ranch is a beautiful organic farm where we learnt how to care for cows and horses; make delicious bread and grow different crops.The Highlight of the trip was the homemade shepherds pie and chocolate cake!

A great trip was rounded off by a thrilling ride in the donkey cart.

We can't wait to go back!

Highlights Our second trip this year was another sleepover trip to the Sports 4 Life centre in Biet El Wadi. We stayed over for 2 nights and the year 4 children joined us for 1 night. The main focus of this trip was to encourage cooperation and communication skills with each other, which links in with our PHSE learning goals. We took part in a range of games and activities including a zipwire, high ropes, low ropes, capture the flag and dodgeball.

We also watched videos about respecting each other and had time to reflect on how to be the best we can possibly be with each other. It was a lovely trip and we all took a lot from it.

An area we have all worked on this year is improving our art skills.

We have explored a range of materials including watercolours, oil pastels and clay. We have explored a range of techniques including collage, kinoptic art and complementary colour blocking. Arguably our greatest piece of artwork this year was our Picasso-inspired collage mask. We spent a lot of time designing, building and evaluating our work. Well done year 5!

Highlights What an amazing time year 6 had in the UK! Many activities were designed to improve teamwork. The children had to work together to paddle canoes, combine their muscle strength to lift each other on the giant swing, work together to build a seaworthy raft (well, to try to build a seaworthy raft, it’s a good job we are all such strong swimmers in year 6!) and cooperate to create their team’s robots for a robot war contest.

Other activities were designed to build confidence. The children encouraged each other to push their limits to climb, abseil, zoom down a zip wire and jump off a very wobbly platform to swing on a trapeze.

All in all Year 6 made the most of this fantastic opportunity to put their learning into practice in another country, a long way from their comfort zone and they have created memories that will last a lifetime.

A group of pupils in Year 6 worked on a fantastic set of projects. We baked delicious chocolate chip and oreo cookies, we designed attractive packaging for them and sold them to Year 5 pupils. We used our imaginations to design and create an exciting lunar theme park-we then used our creative and artistic skills to make a detailed model of the park! We also produced some fantastic pieces of art work on canvas inspired by the Dutch artist Mondrian. Our favourite activity was baking the cookies and them getting to eat them!

Senior School Yet again the school year has been one full of success and interest, with the students being offered more and more opportunities. In the June 2016 examination series, two of our students gained the top IGCSE Mathematics mark in the world, which is an unbelievable achievement; we also had two students who gained the top mark in Africa, one for GCSE Business Studies and one for GCSE History (the latter student also gained the top mark in Egypt for IGCSE Geography).

All of this is a reflection of both our students’ fantastic work ethic and also the level of teaching that they receive.

There have been more trips offered to the students this year, one of the highlights of which was the combined Geography and Science trip to Cyprus.The students stayed in a field centre where they were able to have first-hand experience of what they have been learning this year at school. Another first for the school was the opportunity to go to Malaga, Spain to take part in the COBIS Debating Tournament, a tournament which is only offered to 12 selected schools from around the world. In addition, eight of our students went to the Model United Nations conference in Cairo to meet and debate with other students from both Egypt and other countries.

An initiative that has been started this year is the Leadership Programme which enables selected students from all phases of the school to develop their leadership skills together. As part of this programme, the students have been on weekends to both Rosetta and Wadi El Natrun to take part in team-building activities and to develop their skills and have also done presentations in school assemblies.

Extended Curriculum Days are now in their second year and continue to develop. During these days, students have been on trips to various parts of Alexandria, as well as doing school-based activities. The older students had the opportunity to do a First Aid course and they now know how to deal with any medical emergencies.We continue to develop the creative sides of our students and this year we had a successful production of the play Bugsy Malone and also a musical evening.

In summary, 2016-2017 has been a very successful year and I look forward to the challenges and achievements of the coming year.

Highlights Year 7 ABe have had a really exciting and busy academic year. There have been a variety of events and trips that they have been involved in, such as sports day, the football tournament, the international day and the Carrefour trip. As part of their history project they also visited one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa.

One of their highlights of the year was the residential trip to the Iborotel.

The main aim of the trip was to improve students’ teamwork and fieldwork skills. Students took part in different team building activities ranging from the sand castle competition to minefield which promoted communication skills and memory. They also drew a bird eye view of the pool area to consolidate their map and fieldwork skills. Pupils especially enjoyed swimming in the sea and playing ping pong and football.

Highlights Memorable moments from this academic year for Year 7 JBo have included Valentine’s Disco where we danced the night away. Mathew discovered a thing or two about love and Sherif felt the magical rhythms of ‘Sorry’.

The Art / Drama CIBSA in BISC was fun for more than just academic reasons as we made lots of new friends. We also learnt not to judge a book by its cover.

The Iberotel trip had lots of truly spectacular moments. We can’t forget building sand structures with Miss Shaima or Mr Abbot encountering a jellyfish when he went for a swim. Regarding other things that happened on this trip, lets just say… You had to be there.

All in all it has been a wonderful year.

Highlights It has been a challenging and exciting year for Year 7 JRa, fully packed with many events and trips. From sporting events to educational trips there was never a dull moment. The annual football tournament and sports day were extremely competitive and thoroughly enjoyed by all.The highlights in terms of trips for the Year 7s were their residential trips to the Iberotel, where they took their learning outside of the classroom and then stepping back in time to look at the history behind the Catacombs and Pompeii’s Pillar. The Year 7s also have to be commended for their role in the Bazaar, taking a very simple idea and raising a substantial amount of money for charity.

Highlights Valentines Disco – Valentines night was a great opportunity for us to get dressed up in our fancy dresses and suits. It was also a chance for couples to enjoy a slow dance…..LOL! There were nonstop refreshments and pizza and all our favourite songs playing. It was an unforgettable experience and we are all waiting for next year’s event.

Highlights It has been a fun and exciting year. Many activities have taken place within school and outside of school that we have enjoyed participating in. The football tournament and sports day were sporting highlights of the year. Furthermore, visiting the planetarium and watching videos about space was an amazing experience. However, the major highlight of the year must be the Nile cruise trip, which was simply breathtaking – from the beautiful views of history on offer to spending quality time with the whole year 9 group outside of school.These memories will be cherished in years to come, and we are looking forward to adding to this next year!

Work Experience The students took part in work experience at lots of different places. Three pupils worked at an architect's firm called "Heritage"which gave them an ideal sense of how architectural practice is run and an understanding of the production processes behind a design project. It was a great opportunity to speak to architects and architectural technicians in the practice specifically in Alexandria. The students asked them a lot of questions about their career path hoping it would help them get ideas for future aspirations. Work experience also gave them a taster of a variety of different practices which helped the pupils to start developing their own architectural interests. It also gave them an idea of the kind of practice they might want to work for in the future. Overall it was an amazing week filled with exuberant experiences for all those involved!

It has been a very successful and exciting year for all of the Year 10 students in terms of academics, Enrichment Clubs, school trips especially Cyprus trip, and Curriculum Day activities.

The highlight of the year was the work experience week where all students started their first practical step into the real world.

We were immensely proud of the mature and responsible approach which they managed to show during that week. Moreover, we were impressed by the message they have sent to all Senior School about manners through their assembly.

We have been lucky to watch these students growing into young adults over the last 8 years since Year 3 and we wish them all the best in their future.

Highlights This year has definitely been an emotional rollercoaster! We had to step up a gear both in class and out of class. In our determination to succeed in exams, we grew closer together, helping each other through a difficult year with so much expected of us. However, this hasn't stopped us from participating in countless activities such as sports competitions, charity events and school trips abroad and in Egypt. To name some of our most memorable experiences, some of us were selected to go to Spain for the world COBIS Debating Competition.This was an once-in-a-lifetime experience whilst others were able to spend a week in the midst of the Cypriot forest carrying out Geography and Biology research. Both these trips were a great experience and we feel we have benefited so much we would definitely recommend everyone to take part next year!

In addition, our class joined forces with the Friends of the School and took part in the many charity events planned in order to help our community and those who are less privileged. We have thoroughly enjoyed this year and we would like to thank our teachers for their guidance, support and for planning so many enjoyable activities that allowed us to grow as individuals and prepare us to succeed.

Our Successful Year The Sixth Form have been very proactive this year in organising and running school events. They have worked hard to establish themselves as role models for younger students and have led charity events, football competitions and initiated the Prep School Reading Scheme, which have all been very successful.

Perhaps the most memorable event was the Haunted House. For the spring bazaar, they converted the hall Into a labyrinth of tunnels, walkways and staircases where visitors who were blindfolded had to make their way through, all the time being surprised and frankly terrified, in some cases, by the sixth form “scarers� . This was a really successful enterprise in terms of the money raised and which was considered by many to be the top attraction at the bazaar.

Activities and School Trips

El Alamein Commemoration 22 October 2016 Seventy four years ago there was a terrible battle at El Alamain, near the north coast. Many young soldiers died and the entire site is now a cemetery and museum. A lot of the graves are simply marked "A Soldier" because their identities were not always clear.

As usual, The British School of Alexandria took part in this important ceremony which was also attended by soldiers and embassy officials from many different countries. Mr John Casson, the British Ambassador to Egypt, gave the opening address. The Prep School Choir gave performances of three songs throughout the day and these were enjoyed by everyone attending. A poem about the battle was also read out by BSA students.

The ceremony, which was held on October 22nd, was also attended by a number of BSA teachers and parents, including Mr and Mrs Blakebrough. All in all it was an important and memorable day.

International Day 17 November 2016 Students celebrated the richness and variety of cultures that make up The British School. This day has proven to be a great success in the past, and this year has proven no exception. Students in Prep and Pre-prep paraded with their national costumes before doing all sorts of internationally related activities in the morning.

In the afternoon, students and staff enjoyed the international food organised by the Friends of the School. Many thanks to all those who supported this wonderful event.

Senior School Nile Cruise

5 - 10 April 2017

Once again the Year 9 Nile Cruse Trip was a great success! The journey started from Alexandria and then we flew from Cairo airport to Luxor. We had the chance to visit amazing temples of Luxor, Karnak and Hatchepsut and we were able to enjoy the sights of the ancient Egyptian civilization. We cruised from Luxor to Aswan taking in the sights of Edfu and Kom Ombo and went through Esna Lock. In Aswan we visited the High Dam, the impressive Temple of Philae located on its own island, the Botanical Gardens and the souq. After five days we flew back to Cairo with all the good memories that will never be forgotten.

Lights, Camera, Action: Bugsy Malone!

27 & 28 March 2017

Term two was an exciting one for many reasons. One of those reasons was that BSA students performed in a production of the musical, Bugsy Malone!

We had a lot of fun working on acting skills, dancing skills and singing skills and the performances were successful with all students involved having a chance to shine. We were excited to discover so much talent here at the BSA and we look forward to fostering this talent next year.

Bugsy Malone is a musical set in America in the 1930s. A mysterious mob led by Dandy Dan is trying to take over mobster Fat Sam's territory.

When the entire gang is splurged and Dandy Dan tries to take over the notorious nightclub, The Grand Slam, Sam turns to Bugsy Malone to help solve his problems. Nothing goes to plan as Bugsy is trying to take his girlfriend, Blousy, to Hollywood. Still, tickets to Hollywood aren't cheap and maybe one last job for Sam will help Bugsy and Blousy get away from this mess forever...

From actors to people working behind the scenes, well done to everyone involved.

Year 6 PGL trip to London

7 - 13 April 2017

We have enjoyed our first day in England! After a long day and night travelling we settled into bed and woke up to a full day of activities and, believe it or not, blue skies and glorious sunshine!! We have tried the giant swing, canoeing, a sensory trail and a climbing wall. We have all pushed ourselves to try our hardest.

We have had another day of confidence-building and teamwork activities today and lots more memories to keep! We have completed a challenging obstacle course, sped along the zipwire, played a combination of trampoline and basketball and built (and sank!) a raft out of wood and barrels. In the evening we had to build something to protect a water balloon - our reward was to throw them at Mr Shanks!

We also had a great time visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. We saw the major landmarks and enjoyed a fish and chip lunch in the park.We also visited an amazing mechanical museum and finished the day at the Living Rainforest, an amazing chance to put our topic learning into context.

Prep & Senior Sports Day 6 & 13 April 2017 Sports Day was a fantastic day for our school. The Alexandria Sporting Club was bathed in early summer sunshine and our students made the very best of the opportunity to run, throw, jump and compete in many varied events. Students, staff and parents alike relished the rerun of our annual sports day.

To all staff, especially our PE team: Mr Haytham, Mr. Eslam, and Ms Basma, a very big thank you for making this such an enjoyable day.

Prep School Production "Keymaster" 2 ,3 ,4 April 2017 Prep School worked incredibly hard this term to produce our all singing, all dancing show of the Keymaster. This was an important part of their speaking and listening work, as well as incorporating music and history.

Thank you to all of the parents who supported the production and another well done to all of the students. Special thanks to Miss Hania and Year 6 for the stunning backdrop and well done to Jada and Kamal in Year 3 whose designs inspired the backdrop and the programmes.

Science Week 14 - 18 May 2017 FS got their hands busy for Science Week. In FS2, we got our hands dirty and predicted and observed the results of our experiment with a variety of materials. We made ice eggs and did an investigation to see how we could get objects out of the ice and we also looked at objects and eggs that float or sink in regular water and salty water.

FS1 loved being mini scientists. We were fascinated by the coloured ice inside rubber gloves and we loved squeezing it as it began to melt. We gave our friends and teachers a shock by touching them with our icy hands! We loved playing with the ice blocks that had toys frozen inside.We estimated how long it would take to melt and we decided the ice would melt faster in the sun. We also experimented with different objects deciding which ones would float and which would sink.

Everybody was fully involved in hands-on science activities, reinforcing the investigative skills children need to become true scientists. It is one of the noisiest and messiest weeks of the year and the children love exploring new concepts in practical ways.

Well done to all of our Super Scientists and thank you to everyone for supporting Science Week.

Prep School Fun Day 25 May 2017 It has been a busy term in Prep with students finishing assessments and finishing off curriculum content in all subject areas. Prep students thoroughly enjoyed the fun day which involved lots of activities including a water fight and face painting. Students were very well behaved and they participated well in all activities.

Marsa Shagra Diving Trip 21 - 25 May 2017 For the third consecutive year, a group of Year 9 students led by Mr Germain and Miss Terry went to Marsa Shagra diving village, near Marsa Alam to take the PADI Junior Open Water Course. The students prepared in class before the trip, watching videos, taking the theory knowledge reviews and doing the swim and float test. In Marsa Alam, they only had 3 days to take the practical side of the course as well as the theory test.

All students (and Miss Terry) passed. The group was really well behaved and discovered a lot about the sea, about diving and about themselves.They saw dolphins, baby sharks, turtles, stingrays and a lot of colourful fish.

Swimming Lessons We were delighted to have our swimming lessons again at Alexandria Sporting Club. We also added Golf to year 8 and 9 curriculum, which was thoroughly enjoyed by students. We worked to a jam-packed, tightly-compressed schedule, filled with fantastic and enjoyable learning environment. This area of the curriculum was chosen to run in Sporting Club to offer an even higher standard of facility and swimming experience for the students.

I would like to thank the PE Department and all teachers for their support and assistance in the running of these events. Also thanks to parents for all their help and encouragement, and all our fantastic students, who really were a credit to the school in their effort, attitude and behavior. I hope this has inspired you all to continue swimming which is a skill for life, not just for summer.

CIBSA The Cairo International British Schools Association (CIBSA) continued to extend its events in both academic and non-academic areas across the year. The prep and Lower School students took part in different exciting events such as: • Creativity Festival • Football Tournament • Science and Technology Challenge • Basketball and Benchball Tournament • Swimming Gala Students had a lot of fun as they were very enthusiastic to get involved in competitions and try hard wishing all the best for their school.

Creative Arts Week Last week was creative arts week and we had so much fun! The children expressed their own thoughts and ideas by producing a range of art work based on different themes.The children worked tremendously hard throughout the week and produced some truly amazing art work.

In KS2 we had an art gallery in the hard court, where the children's art work was displayed for everyone to admire. Year 3 focused on Kandinsky, Year 4 created Aboriginal Artwork,Year 5 developed ideas by drawing their inspiration from water and Year 6 drew their inspiration from fire. The children also had the chance to perform songs with Mr Booth and show their dances that they had choreographed themselves.

Thank you to all of the students, teachers and teaching assistants for their hard work this week preparing the art work for display in our galleries. Another big thank you to the parents for coming in to see the children's efforts.

The Leadership Programme The inaugural Student Leadership Scheme took place here at school this year. We are very pleased to state that it has been extremely successful. A selection of students from Year 5 through to Year 10 participated on the scheme that aimed to develop key leadership skills.

They attended two fun weekends away, combining activities that increased teamwork, problem-solving and public-speaking with useful life skills at an Ecolodge and then through a foundation in Fowa. The aim of the weekends was to empower students to lead a project within the school to improve the school community for everyone.

Although a daunting task for normal people, our students thrived in this situation and put on a very successful ‚Spirit Week›, focusing on anti-bullying and developing friendships. The group planned and led the entire project and should be extremely proud of themselves and how it turned out!

Maths Department Maths week took place between 20 - 24th November 2016 The theme for this year was Maths and Crime.

Maths week gave an opportunity to students to explore Mathematics in a context not usually explored within the classroom. Students are offered numerous enrichment opportunities which were aimed to increase the enjoyment and participation of the subject some of which are detailed below.

Lab coat challenge The Mathematics department and other staff members wore lab coats for a day with a mathematical problem on the back for the students to solve.

Students were asked to find the name of the victim of our mathematical murder. When the students solved the clue they would obtain one or two letters which made up the name of the victim. When they had collected all the letters the students had to rearrange them into the name of the victim.

Code Breaking During the week students were given a form time activity based around codes and code breaking. Students were given four names hidden by using four different types of secret writing. The students then had to uncover these names by understanding how these methods of secret communication work.This gave students an insight into an area of study which plays an important role in modern crime detection particularly in computer related crimes.

Crime scene investigation On Monday and Tuesday pupils embarked on a crime scene investigation to seek and eliminate the suspects.They required to analyse, discuss, predict and come up with facts and a culprit within 2 days.

Daily Puzzle Each day a daily puzzle was set to help pupils see different ways in which Maths could be used to tackle crime Themed Lessons Students experienced themed lessons during the week in different subjects.

Tutor Group Activities All week there were themed activities in tutor time including a prize competition.

Humanities Department The trips this academic year in Humanities were bolstered by the new international trip to Cyprus.

The Geography fieldtrip for the IGCSE students promoted the skills needed for the coastal and urban questions for their examinations.This will certainly be a trip which will grow from strength to strength in the future after its success in March this year.

The Year 7 students were also treated to an overnight induction trip to the Iberotel to polish up on map skills and science and teamwork activities. They also went to the Catacombs to explore local historical fieldwork about the Greco-Roman period. The students started to develop enquiry writing skills when they completed the City Centre shopping investigation this year.

Highlights for Year 8 History students included a visit to Rasheed and the Pyramids. While Geography studies on the Coast and Weather have embraced practical opportunities. In November 2017 we visited the Alexandrian Beach to put our theory to the test.We identified coastal protection measures, measured longshore drift and beach gradient. Students also wrote up their findings on the weather in school, by measuring temperature, precipitation and wind speed in the Heron Garden and on the Roof to see if weather varies in a microcosm.

Business and Economics Department The success and enjoyment that students experience through learning a subject that could directly impact them in the future has led to a very busy year for the Business and Economics Department. The subject is now proving to be more popular than ever, with almost all Year 10 students selecting the subject as an option and that looking likely for next year›s iGCSE cohort as well.

This year, Business and Economics students have mixed theory with practical skills, learning how to run a successful small business in the classroom and then translating this into financial success at the Halloween Disco. Year 11 students were so successful that both businesses made a healthy profit and the experience was greatly enjoyed by all involved.

We have also had guests coming from outside of school to run workshops during the extended curriculum days that have helped to further the business acumen of our students as they prepare for examinations.

French Department Students have experienced a wide variety of different activities this year in French. Some of the highlights of the year with the younger students have included the French breakfast in the prep school as well as learning table manners in French. In the senior school, students have worked really hard improving their verbs and tenses as well as learning about the culture of the French speaking world through different texts and films. At the top end of the school, the exam classes have prepared very thoroughly for their examinations and are hoping to get the grades they deserve. In year 12 for example, they have had to debate the pros and cons of animal experimentation.

Arabic Department To resume the aim of the Arabic Language Department is to enrich students with general knowledge and provide them with more skills and experiences for all levels of study. Emphasis is placed on both reading and writing skills along with useful activities.

In Primary, the Arabic library has been developed, and students were encouraged to borrow books so that the relationship between the students and the books became stronger than it was which led to more confidence in writing.

In Secondary, the writing classes were planned as workshops to reach a better level in terms of the way of thinking and language used.

In order to provide the students with community experiences and to link the curricula with the community and other subjects, trips played a big role. We gave students the chance to visit one of the largest dairy products factories in Egypt (LABANITA) to be fully aware of how these products are made and to see the production lines. The trip was organised between both of the Arabic department and Science department.

Moreover, we organised another trip to Cairo which pleased the students and made them more proud of their country as they went to different places such as pyramids, Al-Azhar Park, Salah al-Din Citadel, Al-MoezStreet and the whole area of Al Hussein.

The trip was meant to show the link between both the Arabic and the Art department.

The third trip was to visit the SWIZA Chocolate Factory to learn about the history of the chocolate industry, its methods of manufacturing, and its health, psychological and social impact on people. It has been associated with the Humanities Department, so we have achieved diversity in the trips to extend the curriculum in order to give the students useful information.

We always hope and work to offer our children the most helpful and enjoyable atmosphere to be able to achieve more.

Friends of School Friends of school had a year full of great achievements and new organisation introduced that added to our charities.

We have started the year with the FOS annual Gala Dinner. Year after year the Gala dinner is perfected with the help and support of our school community. This year the food and entertainment were a delight, everyone enjoyed it and at the same time supported a good cause "El Shatby children's hospital". With the increase in number of our school community, now we are able to add more orphanages to the list for Shoe Boxes and Ramadan Pack.We have Dar El Malika, Caritas , maharam Baic orphanage for boys and the other for girls, Bambi, El Radwan, El Orman and El Affaf. Thanks to students, teachers, FOS and parents in helping us to achieve such a great, noble goal over the years.

We can not forget the Pizza Day every term, students favourite, and of course International Day. Last but not least, the Spring Bazaar was the highlight of the year, girls and boys enjoyed the fashion show, superhero characters but definitely the haunted house was a great attraction. Profit was divided equally between Fairhaven (handicapped children) and Caritas (street children).

Behind the scenes This year has started with the renovation of a new site, Cleopatra, to accommodate Year 1 and Year 2.

Works were done throughout the summer holiday and the site was ready at the beginning of the year.

In addition to the classrooms, Cleopatra Campus has various learning spaces and activities that the students are enjoying; e.g. the music room, outdoor and indoor playing areas, planting area, and a small pond hosting our turtles.

I would like to thank all the admin team for their hard work and support throughout the year.

Looking forward to another successful year at the BSA! Yosra Sheir Head of Administration In The British School there is a team behind the scenes, their work is to make things happen. Our Campus team (Cleaners, Security guards, Maintenance, Gardeners and messengers) work tirelessly to provide support to the school.This year has been another busy one with a number of developments and changes.

Over the summer, the team took the responsibility of maintaining all areas of the school and preparing it for the new academic year as well as preparing the Cleopatra villa for Year 1 and 2.

During this academic year they helped in the organization of several events like the Gala dinner, held in the beautiful Consulate gardens, Annual Bambi Picnic, International day, Spring Bazar and the Sports Day. This is in addition daily work tasks.

Our next move is going to be the summer works in order to maintain the school facilities in good condition and prepare the school for the next academic year.
