2014-2015 TRANSITIONS
2014-2015: Transitions
Who will it be?
Dear Friends,
Originally from Chicago, Israel Getzov is no stranger to central Arkansas. Mr. Getzov has led impressive collaborations with dance companies, choruses, and outstanding soloists during his tenures as conductor of the Conway Symphony Orchestra and the Tianjin (China) Philharmonic, and as former associate conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He is also music professor at the University of Central Arkansas, and many will recognize him as the host of “Izzy Investigates,” a weekly radio program on KLRE 90.5 FM. “What an opportunity to make music with the talented performers of the LRWS! “ he says, “I look forward to sharing my excitement for music and vision for a new direction with the entire Little Rock Wind Symphony community.”
As we enter our 22nd season, the Little Rock Wind Symphony prepares for its future in a significant way. This past spring, we launched the process of securing the LRWS’s next Music Director with the formation of a Search Committee and announced this summer the three candidates being considered for the position—all of whom will serve as guest conductors this season. The Search Committee is very excited about this slate of candidates! They have diverse skills and experiences, and have demonstrated exceptional talent and leadership with a proven ability to provide a performance experience of the highest caliber. Each has potential to bring a unique, new direction for the orchestra with the promise of continued growth. Join us this season of transition as the LRWS’s next Music Director is chosen to help envision the future of wind band music in our community. I look forward to seeing you at each concert!

Preserving the Wind Band Tradition
A Missouri native, conductor Timothy Oliver has been recognized for his artistic and collaborative efforts at Arkansas State University, where he is the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Wind and Percussion Studies. Collaborative efforts are a fundamental tenet of his artistic vision. He states, “I strongly believe in the interactions and collaborations among artists, and I will work to continue existing relationships and facilitate new musical collaborations with the LRWS.” Dr. Oliver has diverse experiences with repertoire and programming. “One of the many elements of this position which I find attractive is the type of repertoire the LRWS has been performing recently,” he says, “and as Music Director, I would like for this type of programming to continue and expand and evolve to meet the needs of our audience, musicians and venues.”
During the one year Kentucky native Shaun R. Popp has been in Arkansas, he has established himself with local musical organizations as well as Henderson State University where he is the Assistant Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Education. His infectious enthusiasm for conducting has him leading the university’s Symphonic Band plus a community orchestra and the traditional music at First United Methodist Church in Bryant, Arkansas. Of his application for this position, Dr. Popp says, “Through my previous experiences, I have discovered that community musicians, often having careers in music and in other fields, bring very unique passions and outlooks to music making. While each member's perspective may be different, most players embrace the benefits of lifelong music participation. The opportunity to be associated with the outstanding musicians in the Little Rock Wind Symphony would be a rare privilege.”
