LETTER ... it is not always so easy to see the wonderful things that are right in front of us, like the old adage goes “Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest for the trees.”

As the New Year is finally upon us, I can’t help but feel excited about all the potential that 2015 has to offer. BSCENE is celebrating its 15th year of publication and fourth as a monthly magazine. My family is happy and healthy and even my beloved Dallas Cowboys are in the playoffs. Yes, I suppose there is a lot to be grateful for as we collectively kickoff 2015. But, it is not always so easy to see the wonderful things that are right in front of us, like the old adage goes “Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest for the trees.” The coming year forces us all to take a step back and examine where our lives have been and where they are going. Over the holidays, I, like most parents, ran up and down the store aisles hunting for that specific gift my children were hoping for this Christmas. Kids today have a plethora of toys and gadgets that would make my childhood self, turn green with envy. I honestly think none of us truly realize how lucky we are. And, sometimes it takes a story that comes to us to remind me of this fact.

away from home than ever before and was a staunch reminder of just how fortunate my family and I are. See, Matthew (or Matt as most of us know him) just returned from Uganda, Africa. He came back with such an amazing array of photographs I could barely hold my excitement or desire to share them with our readers. But, it was not just the quality, the lighting or technical know-how it took to generate these pictures, but the subject themselves that moved me so. Capturing the beauty of the souls that live in such immense poverty is worth a thousand words. Read Hogan's story about his journey to Africa and why his heart and passion have forever changed.

LETTER For some reason, on this very day, every single year, we believe that when the clock strikes midnight, Cinderella will get to keep her slippers. HAPPY NEW YEAR! What is that saying? Out with the old and in with the new ... or something like that. The holidays have passed, and it is all too real. The "week-after" guilt has set in, and those wretched decisions you made weigh heavy on you, literally. Maybe indulging in that extra slice of peanut butter fudge pie (or the whole pie, in my case), eating endless handfuls of puppy chow and devouring those three batches of sausage cheese balls ... let's not talk about it anymore ... this is embarrassing now that I think about it! While I may not be proud of the choices I made during the holidays, the new year is here. Time to wipe the slate clean, so to speak. For some reason, on this very day, every single year, we believe that when the clock strikes midnight, Cinderella will get to keep her slippers. The psychological affect the changing of the calendar year has on us is undeniable. I often wonder why waking up on New Year's Day I felt refreshed and driven to make the most out of the year ahead. That renewed vigor is also what leaves 92% of us unsuccessful in achieving our New Year's resolutions. I would compare it to that feeling you get when you fall in love. It is perfect and you hope it lasts a lifetime. However, sooner or later the newness wears off and your dedication and desire to put 100% into your relationship is a commitment you either choose to strive for or give up. New Year's resolutions are no different. You must be fully committed, no matter how tough it gets, or you will choose to give up and simply put it off until next year.

that it is a modern tradition. However, it dates back to 153 B.C. January originated from the mythical god of early Rome named Janus. It has been said that Janus had two faces, affording him the ability to look behind him while also looking in front. It was on December 31st that the Romans envisioned Janus looking back on the year ending and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time for the Romans to forgive enemies for troubles of the past and make resolutions for the new year.

Kelly Laine Haney KHANEY@H3-Media.com

The Romans would yield gifts and make promises to Janus, maintaining hope that he could forgive them for their wrongdoings of the previous year and bless them in the year to come. Thus, the New Year’s resolution was born! So your slate is wiped clean and you have all of 2015 to look forward too. Take the time and think about the goals you set for yourself and determine your commitment level before you get started. New Year resolutions not your thing? No worries, we came up with 51 ways to perfect your inner foodie in 2015. You have to eat anyway so you might as well commit to trying something new in the kitchen! a thousand words Article By: Tami Spencer

the photography of Matthew Hogan

With the new year often comes the expectation of new beginnings. We all make some sort of resolution, whether formally or informally, that we will do something different, something better in the new year. For many, it’s a decision to take better care of their physical bodies; work out more frequently, eat healthier and give up bad habits. For others, the desire for change goes much deeper than the physical and rests in the soul, a longing to live life from a place of greater purpose, to fulfill a calling that will satisfy our longing for a greater sense of meaning in our daily lives. For Matthew Hogan, this new year’s resolution came a little bit early when a trip at the end of November, to shoot photographs and video for a missions organization in Africa, became the catalyst for a redirected career and a new life passion.

As a full-time photographer for the past seven years, 31-year-old Hogan focused most of his time and energy on the most lucrative of photography ventures, shooting weddings and special events. He enjoyed the flexible schedule that his career afforded and was inspired by friends in the industry who reported making six-figure annual salaries focusing on wedding photography. Taking pictures and creating video had always been a passion for Hogan, so doing work in the wedding and business industry was somewhat fulfilling and definitely enjoyable. But there was always an inner tug that left him desiring more. Growing up in the church, Hogan became a Christian early in his life, but admits it wasn’t until the last three years that he became serious about pursuing his faith more deeply. About that time, Hogan auditioned for and joined the Crosswalk Band at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. He explained that with becoming a part of the band and church, his life began to turn more towards eternal pursuits and away from monetary gain. “I’d rather live a long life that has meaning than a short life that was just lived for myself,” Hogan expressed. With that realization, Hogan began looking for opportunities to use his skills as a photographer and videographer, to give back. His work focus shifted from the mainstream wedding opportunities towards working with small non-profits and missions organizations, to help them create media content that would powerfully and effectively convey their purpose to the public. He spent time in Seattle with a friend, who had recently moved to start a new church in the largely unchurched city. He helped create videos and photos that could be used to spread the word about the new church’s presence. He then joined the Tyler-based non-profit SKAD, touring with the leadership and recording content to help the faith-based youth, outreach program spread their message of providing support and assistance to youth who often feel alone in their struggles. Hogan also lent his creative talents to Louisiana-based Xtreme Missionary Adventures, a missions organization that provides short-term, international mission opportunities in nine countries around the world. While all of these projects moved Hogan closer towards his passion and purpose, it wasn’t until he accompanied a group from Parental Care Ministries to Uganda that his life was completely changed. On November 21, 2014, Hogan boarded a plane to Uganda, Africa, along with a small group of missionaries headed up by the organizations executive director and Tyler pediatrician, Dr. Mark Barret, MD. Ten days later, Hogan returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a heart that had been forever changed by his encounter with the orphans of Uganda. On the flight home, Hogan attempted to express the magnitude of his experience while it was fresh on his mind, recording the following thoughts in his journal:

I’m going to try not to ramble here, but it’s proving to be quite difficult. Uganda, Africa. Say those two words to me a few years ago, and they’d hold little weight. My life was pretty normal, repetitive and care free. Wake up, go to the gym, edit a few pictures, return a few emails, hang out with a few friends, sleep and then repeat with careful pre-calculation. As a 31-year-old Caucasian male, I had an easy life. I thought that I had a pretty good world view from the pictures, movies and stories that I had watched, heard and read, all while reclining comfortably in my airconditioned apartment, but God decided to abruptly turn my world inside out. As I’m sitting on my return flight, thousands of feet in the air, somewhere over England, I can’t help but think about how my heart is no longer with me. In less than a week’s time, my entire life changed. I know a lot of people blindly throw sayings like that around in today’s culture, but I’m no longer who I was a week ago. Talking normally comes quite easy to me, but for some reason I’m at a loss for words currently. It’s difficult processing such a magnificent, huge reality-altering experience like this. That country. Those kids … those smiles, hugs and laughter. They had so little, yet their faces burned brightly with an over-abundance of joy like I had never before experienced in my short little life. Uganda, Africa. Home of over 2.2 million orphans. Over 50 percent of this nation’s current population are UNDER the age of 15. Let that soak in for a moment. While driving from village to village, I continually saw countless kids sitting around in the dirt, wearing clothing that looked as if it had been worn for ages, falling apart at the seams, far from the comforts of our washing machines. It seemed as if the villages were almost run by the kids themselves, as they were who we mostly saw throughout our daily interactions. In 2008, Pastor Emmy and Supermom Nnyanzi decided to make a change after God stirred in their hearts a desire to do something. While he and his wife lived in poverty when this calling arose, the least bit certain as to how God would pull off what they felt moved to do, they knew one thing: Something had to happen. Fast forward to today, and where there once was nothing, there are now 5 schools. There are now 70 churches. There are now 2 farms, 1 medical clinic and 1 baby house, which was just launched. There are over 1800 kids, who if not for Emmy’s vision from God, would probably be out on the street with kids of their own. These kids who were missing the love and care of their biological parents that a lot of us are used to having now have a place to call home. Parental Care Ministries was officially born. During that week, we visited multiple schools multiple times, as my perception of this world got ripped ever so quickly from my hands, and was gently replaced with the grasping, tiny fingers of countless loving children as they wanted nothing more but to be loved. To feel acceptance. To feel cared for. I don’t get overwhelmed easily, but this blew the roof off of what I was expecting when signing up for this trip. I HAD to do something. I HAD to bring back images of these faces, even if no image could fully represent just how amazing these little lives were. Flying home, I feel an undeniable calling from God, for the first time in a while ... Uganda is now a part of my life. I never thought that I’d say that, but God works in funny ways. When you let go of what you think your definition of life should be, mountains move. Perspectives change. LIVES change, starting with our own. I decided to create a gallery to show you all these little faces that fully changed my little life within the period of one little week far, far away from the comforts of my home. I’ve shot close to a million pictures throughout my life, and zero affected me like these did before now. While they could never fully convey what it’s fully like to be there in person, I hope that you enjoy these images as much as I do. -Matt Hogan, November 30, 2014 Cont'd on pg. 19

Parental Care Ministries was founded in May of 2008, by the Barret family, after a sequence of mission trips surrounding orphan care led to Uganda and to the small orphanage that local Pastor Emmanuel Nnyanzi and his wife had started with the profits of the sale of their own home. Since that time, the organization has worked to improve the conditions and resources available to the school and help grow their ability to influence and assist children in the area. In just seven short years, Parental Care Ministries has helped to expand the ministry from a single orphanage to include improvements such as a new school and teaching resources, banana plantation, tilapia farm and clean water. The organization also offers support to more than 50 rural Pastors in the area and provides the opportunity for financial sponsorship of individual children. Another focus of the organization is to circulate the gospel message throughout BS CENEMAG. COM

Africa. Recently, they have made great strides in advancing this goal by obtaining access to radio broadcasting opportunities, where “Pastor Emmy” has several hours a week to preach and teach on-air. The expansion of the stations frequency is a priority project for the group and they have made several breakthroughs recently that have resulted in the wider availability of the Pastor’s message to rural areas of Uganda. The November trip marked the 45th mission trip to Uganda for Parental Care Ministries. As Hogan mentions in his writing, he came back particularly inspired to share the images he had captured in photographs during his trip. He has been in the process of assembling an online photo gallery that will help to convey the mission and ministry of Parental Care Ministries in Uganda. He is also working to assemble a coffee table book of images that he

plans to sell in order to raise funds to further support the organization. Hopefully, he would like to participate in another trip to Africa in the spring. Beyond his next trip to Africa, Hogan is unsure of what the future has in store for him, but he does know that he is no longer satisfied to live a life that is not fully committed to a greater cause than himself. The faces displayed in his photographs not only captured the heart of Parental Care Ministries, they also captured the heart of Hogan himself and inspired him to rethink his future to expand his career and life goals to reach beyond himself. His desire is to focus on ministry and how he can best serve others, a message he hopes will be transmitted to everyone who views the subjects portrayed in his photography.

very 20 minutes the walls are raised in a habitat house and one more person is given the gift of a home. This year, we celebrate the anniversary of an organization that not only builds homes, but community and hope throughout East Texas. Twenty-five years ago, Smith County Habitat for Humanity was founded by volunteers who wished to help create decent, safe affordable housing for low-income citizens. Its mission statement remains, "Seeking to put God's love into action. The volunteers at Smith County Habitat has changed the lives of those in need as well as those with a desire to serve, bettering Smith County with their hard work and giving hearts. "I used to love thunderstorms, Deanna Harrison, Director of Development at Smith County Habitat for Humanity, recalls. "I loved thunderstorms and cold nights with a roaring fire in the fireplace. After working for habitat, my love of thunderstorms is tempered by the knowledge that when it rains, it rains inside the homes of many low-income families." Harrison has served with habitat since February 2010 and has witnessed the tragedy and triumph that comes with such a giving position. “Now, during bad weather, I sometimes wake up in the night praying for those who have rain coming into their homes or are using the burners on their stoves just trying to stay warm. It is impossible to work with habitat and not have it change your life."

“Being the hand of hope that reaches out to people who truly desire to stand up and move forward in their lives - that is the spirit of Habitat for Humanity,” Taylor claims. In their signature program, habitat volunteers, staff and donors build modest homes in neighborhoods where decent housing is scarce. Through building and selling the homes, habitat makes homeownership possible for families who cannot afford a traditional mortgage. The homeowners work hard for their homes and put in a lot of hours helping to build their own home as well as the homes of other habitat families. "Our homeowners know this is something they did. We just provided the opportunity and support that they needed in order to make it happen,” Harrison says. Individuals apply for the habitat program and are selected based on the level of need. BS CENEMAG. COM

In addition to the building and selling of homes, Smith County Habitat has a ReHabitat program and a ReStore program. ReHabitat is a critical repair program. Most of the critical repair projects are for low-income seniors, veterans and people with disabilities who need an extra hand. The ReStore Home Improvement Center is open to the general public for the sale of new and used items that have been donated by generous businesses. All profits from ReStore sold items help to fund habitat's work throughout Smith County. The habitat's programs demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ while focusing on shelter, advocating for affordable housing, promoting dignity and hope and supporting sustainable,

Smith County Habitat has obtained great success and recognition for their work and efforts to provide decent housing for those in need. This August, Smith County Habitat received the “Affiliate of the Year Award for Rehabilitation” at the annual Habitat Texas Conference. “Now during bad weather, I sometimes wake up in the night praying for those who have rain coming into their homes or are using the burners on their stoves just trying to stay warm.” for Humanity Smith County, and know that I play a small part in helping the organization grow and change lives,” Waletta Taylor, Director of Operations and Finance with Smith County Habitat, expresses on what the 25th anniversary of Smith County Habitat means to her. Taylor's inspiration for habitat comes from her personal background. She has seen firsthand how a good home can transform a life. "I was raised by a single mom with an eighth grade education, who was thrown into a situation where she had to raise six children by herself,” Taylor tells of her childhood. "We didn't ask to be in that situation. We didn't want to be in that situation. We didn't desire to stay in that situation. It is because of this that I understand what it means to need a helping hand, if for nothing else to simply stand up and move forward." A family was sent into Taylor’s life that embraced her family with their love, friendship and assistance. Through this, Taylor's family was given the opportunity to grow and live successful, productive lives with giving hearts. "Being the hand of hope that reaches out to people who truly desire to stand up and move forward in their lives - that is the spirit of Habitat for Humanity,” Taylor claims. Habitat gives opportunity and hope for a brighter future to those who desire it. The memorable experiences that come with working for habitat are endless. "I love what we call ‘Wall Raising Day,’” Harrison says. During the first day of construction at the site, volunteers raise the first two walls, set them into place and the homeowner climbs a ladder to drive the first nail into his/her new home. It is the beginning of a brand new future. “Another moment that I love comes about three or four months after the ‘Wall Raising Day.’ The habitat staff and new homeowner meet at the title company and the homeowner signs the documents to receive the key to their new home. The tears of joy flow freely!” The years with Smith County Habitat for Humanity have been filled with life changing moments for Cont'd on pg. 26

Finally, the mother posted that the doctor had come in and said to them, “You can go home now.” When Harrison read that sentence, tears came to her eyes as she focused on the word “home.” Now, because of Smith County Habitat, he was not only going home but that he was going to his own room in a safe, decent home. This concept was only a dream a few years earlier. Later that same day, this little boy had his mother post his own message for the Facebook world to see saying, “Thank you for my cool home.” After completing some major repairs on the home of an elderly veteran, he told Habitat, “Thank you for giving me back my heart.” Another couple told their staff, “We can hold our heads high again,” after Habitat worked to make their home wheelchair accessible and gave them a new roof. “Our ReHabitat program is all about restoring not only a home, but the homeowner’s safety, hope and dignity,” Harrison says. "Sometimes I begin to get grouchy over what I want to do in my home or things I wish I had, but cannot afford. Then, my mind goes to the individuals I have visited, who live in extremely dreadful, sub-standard living conditions. I immediately ask God to change my selfish thinking into that of gratitude. We are so blessed,” Taylor says. “Stability” is a word that is heard often from homeowners with Smith County Habitat. Owning a home gives them the stability that they need to move forward. With a stable home, homeowners and their families are able to continue on to reach their goals. “I recently spoke with a single, female homeowner who proudly informed me that her son had gone to college. He was the first in their family to earn a degree,” Harrison recalls. “Another homeowner stopped by my office to let me know that she herself went to college after becoming a habitat homeowner and earned her degree.”

This August, Smith County Habitat received the “Affiliate of the Year Award for Rehabilitation” at the annual Habitat Texas Conference. Jack Wilson, CEO, received the “Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh Leadership Award” for his work in developing the ReHabitat program. It is not only the hard work of Habitat's selfless serving employees that attribute to the organization's success, but the support of the East Texas community that drives them forward. "We absolutely cannot fulfill our mission to eliminate substandard housing in Smith County without the faithful support of our donors and volunteers,” Harrison expresses, of her gratitude for the loyal members our community that allow Smith County Habitat to continue on their mission to transform East Texas. “We thank God for all

of our donors who support us. Every gift they make to H abitat is an investment in people’s lives that will reap dividends for generations to come.” So, what is next for Smith County Habitat? “Right now, our goal is to make more of an impact through our ReHabitat Critical Repair program,” Harrison states. “The housing needs of low-income families in Smith County are enormous, so we want to figure out a way to

complete even more projects as well as increase our new home production.” When thinking of Habitat’s 25th Anniversary, Harrison says the words “blessed” and “gratified” come to mind. “The fact that we’ve reached our 25th Anniversary is a testimony to those within our community who believe in our work and support our effort. We are looking forward to the next 25 years and trusting God to guide us!” B SC EN EM A G.COM

betterway to treat atrial fibrillation.

And it’s only available at ETMC. If the symptoms of atrial fibrillation (a-fib) are keeping you or someone you love from living life to the fullest, the ETMC Cardiovascular Institute can help. Using an advanced ablation device called a cryoballoon, Dr. Raul Torres-Heisecke is able to better manage the symptoms of a-fib. Bringing the first cryoballoon to East Texas required, in his words, “a significant commitment” of resources on the part of ETMC. But the benefit to East Texans with a-fib is just as significant: “Last week, a lady who was crippled with atrial fibrillation and who underwent ablation about a month and a half ago came to my office, and she was crying. She gave me a hug and she said, ‘Thank you for becoming a doctor, because you gave me back my life.’ And I couldn’t say anything else after that – just ‘Thank you.’” This is advanced heart care that changes lives. And it’s the heart of ETMC’s commitment to you. “Atrial fibrillation is scary. Patients feel afraid. But that’s why we’re here. We have the means to help them.”

EXPERT CORNER TODD SMITH, MD TRINITY CLINIC VASCULAR SURGERY

PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE (PAD) Discomfort, pain or cramping in your legs or feet, especially after walking or climbing stairs, is not something you should ignore. It could be a serious, though treatable, condition known as peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which affects one in 20 Americans over the age of 50. PAD is the narrowing or blockage of the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the legs and is caused by the build up of plaque in the arteries. PAD is caused by the same risk factors that lead to heart disease, including smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. PAD most commonly affects blood flow to the legs, and is a warning sign that other arteries, including those in the heart and brain, may also be blocked—increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke. When blood flow is blocked, pain and numbness often occur. This also can increase chances of infection and make it difficult for the body to fight infection. In worst cases, blocked blood flow can cause gangrene. Symptoms of PAD include pain after such activity as walking which can be relieved with rest. Be sure to watch for cramping pain or fatigue in the legs when you move and foot wounds that will not heal or heal slowly. Other symptoms include achy legs or cold, numb or tingling feet. Recurrent leg pain needs to be assessed by a doctor to make a formal diagnosis. Learn if you are at risk; take our FREE PAD Risk Profiler at www.tmfrisk.org.

USA is number 1 on the top 10 Medal winning countries list for the x games and Tyler’s own Morgan Wade has made a major contribution to that fact.

Since 1997, Big Air has been Wade’s big business. The Tyler, Texas native and lifetime resident spent his youth at Noble E. Young Park honing his extreme sports skills

T

he wind was fierce that early June, summer night in Austin, Texas. It was the night of the X Games GOPro BMX Big Air final. As he looked down from above his 80-foot-plus perch, he stared at the tens of thousands of screaming fans below. Letting their energy move him forward, he gunned ahead for the roll-in, flew into a Superman backflip and soared up off the halfpipe, kissing the Southwest Texas sky. Morgan Wade took home the silver at the 2014 X Games. It was at that same competition, in Los Angeles, that Wade took home the gold in 2013. But for those who didn’t know any better and may have simply flipped through channels to catch his jaw-dropping performance–not taking home the gold again in 2014 didn’t seem to bother the 31-year-professional rider. Perhaps it was because of his Texas pride in competing on his home turf, as evidenced by the Texas flag safety pinned to his back during competition. The flag was purchased on a whim at a grocery store for a dollar. The simple, uncalculated action incited instant roars from the crowd as he zoomed and it trailed, making it seem as though he had already won the competition.

Photo By: Ivan Malvido Maybe it was his love-of-the-Lord disposition and his down home southern charm that exuded a palpable sense of appreciation for the competition. Or perhaps, having already won the gold in 2013, gave Wade an opportunity to simply enjoy the ride. Whatever it was, Wade’s winning attitude and overall contagious spirit made him and makes him seem unbeatable. Since 1997, Big Air has been Wade’s big business. The Tyler, Texas native and lifetime resident has spent his youth at Noble E. Young Park, honing his extreme sports skills. A supportive mother and father helped him realize his dream, regularly taking Wade back and forth to competitions, paying for medical bills after many injuries and the fees required for further training, like that of Camp Woodward, a world renowned summer camp specifically for action sports in Pennsylvania. Wade admits that he considers his parents to be his first BMX sponsors.

Morgan Wade

Natalie Wade

It would only be about four years into his amateur career before Wade qualified for his first professional competition, juggling school and competing at the same time. Enrolled at Tyler Junior College as a graphic art student, Wade continued his studies Monday through Thursday, leaving Friday through Sunday open as designated competition days. But, in 2003, when he qualified to compete in the Holy Grail of extreme sports competitions, the X Games, Wade quickly realized that it was time to make a choice and focus solely on riding. “I decided to take advantage of this and go 100 percent BMX,” Wade explained. “I can always go back to school. School will always be there. So, technically, I’m still on break,” he joked. That “break” has lasted over a decade now and the BMX pro doesn’t have plans to change his direction any time soon. “There are very few people who actually break into the BMX circuit [the way I did]. There are not very many guys who can go without having a regular job and just live off of BMX solely, 100 percent. I feel extremely fortunate and blessed to be one of those few guys,” Wade claimed. As one of the few, most could imagine, the athlete doesn’t have a ton of time to himself. He competes nine months out of the year with November, December and January considered his off-season. But, even during his offseason, he still remains very busy, taking time to give back by heading overseas to entertain the troops through Bikes Over Baghdad. It is a commitment he has been a part of for the last three years. Last year, he also took part in the popular reality television competition, “America Ninja Warrior,” and is being considered again this year as one of 12 competitors asked back to the show by casting.

Moving forward, there’s still much more the couple would like to accomplish together and separately. Together, they want to make an extreme sports park, in Tyler, a reality. The park would give kids a quality resource to sharpen their skills and interest in riding and skating.

Photo By: Alex Jumelin When he’s not working, his time is devoted to his family, in particular Natalie, his wife of more than seven years. Natalie is a force of nature in her own right. As fate would have it, the pair met on the BMX competition circuit. And, in case anyone thinks that she was obviously a spectator in the crowd, she wasn’t. The raven-haired beauty caught the eye of Wade when she was a BMX competitor, albeit with a cute skirt.

Leaving the rest to fate and to the Lord, the relationship grew. “We talked on the phone for hours and I literally hate talking on the phone. But I found that I didn’t mind talking to him. It was nice because we got to know each other in a way that was intimate in the sense that when you have such great distance between you, you come to know someone differently than if you just saw them every day,” Natalie explained. “The biggest thing that impacted me is that Morgan had been a Christian since he was a little guy and I was not a Christian. So he was ministering his faith to me that entire time,” she recalled. JANUARY 2015

No. 41

Six months later, Natalie gathered her belongings and moved to Texas. During the first two years as newlyweds, Morgan’s busy schedule didn’t deter the new Texan. She continued competing, while at the same time, deciding to go back to school to pursue her dream of a career in medicine. Today, while she no longer competes, she’s still in school and recently sent in her applications to attend medical school.

It seems as though the world is this young couple’s oyster. Yet, the Wades don’t take their success for granted and stay grounded through their faith. “We really try to keep that perspective when we have prosperous seasons or in seasons that aren’t as prosperous,” Natalie explained. “We just always try to remember it’s a gift from the Lord. There are things that we do, but we realize it is not solely because of our efforts. We have someone who is providing for these things. We are very fortunate and try to do our best to be responsible with the things that He’s given us; the opportunities we’ve had, the relationships we’ve had and the people we’ve met.” Moving forward, there’s still much more the couple would like to accomplish together and separately. Together, they want to make an extreme sports park, in Tyler, a reality. The park would give kids a quality resource to sharpen their skills and interest in riding and skating. “We need a new facility in a growing part of town that will be more challenging to the kids who skate and ride there,” Wade explained. “Coming from my experience as a professional action sports athlete, if you want kids to get better at something, you build something that is way above their skill level and they learn how to ride it. Now, when I say way above their skill level, I don’t mean so hard they can’t ride it. I mean something that they’ll be capable of doing bigger and better stuff on, but that beginners can still have fun on. But we need something that’s geared toward the whole spectrum and not just the beginner.” Planning is already underway and the couple is busy working to continue gaining local support through grassroots efforts. The professional BMX world is also on board to help bring the park to Tyler with the expertise of BMX pro and Wade’s friend, Nate Wessel, who is also Camp Woodward’s-own ramp builder. As a personal favor to Wade, Wessel committed to donating his time in the design of the park.

That “break” has lasted over a decade now and the BMX pro doesn’t have plans to change his direction any time soon. “There are very few people who actually break into the BMX circuit [the way I did].

Watch Morgan Wade compete at the next ESPN X Games Austin 2015, June 4-7.

Moving forward, their next steps include officially laying out the overall vision of the park to the city and continuing the effort in spreading the word to the Tyler community. “If we want more athletes, like me, to come out of Tyler, skaters, bikers, whatever, we’ve got to give them something to learn on and something good to ride and skate on. And we can do it, it’s just a matter of people getting behind it.”

are still set high in capturing the crowning achievement in his sport to break the highair record—the highest air ever reached on a BMX bike–a feat that is measured from the top of the quarter pipe to the lowest point of the bike at its peak. To do it, he’ll have to break the record set by Kevin Robinson, in 2008, at 27 feet. Prior to Robinson, Wade’s official sponsor, the legendary Mat Hoffman, was the first to break it at 26.5 feet.

Separately, the goals are a bit more personal. For Natalie, her end game is to be an orthopedic surgeon or an emergency room physician. Only time will tell which will be the final outcome.

While setting the record has eluded Wade thus far in his career, there is some good news, however. This East Texas treasure just happens to have home turf advantage again, at the X Games in Austin, for the next three years.

For Wade, it goes back to his ride. It would seem that already having achieved so many accolades, there’s not a whole lot left for the pro to aim for, but that’s not so. The sights JANUARY 2015

hirty-nine years ago, J.W. and Josephine Rumbelow created what was to become a Tyler tradition. In the Brick Steet/Azalea area, where a 10 cent hamburger joint had been, the “Original Bruno’s” got its start. This cozy neighborhood favorite is still family owned and operated and has won BSCENE’s Readers Choice Best Pizza yet again, for 2014.

Impressed yet? Wait till ya hear about the food. The veggies are all farm fresh and the hamburger and sausage are of the best fresh grade. There are no processed or packaged foods. The cheeses are freshly grated and the meatballs, lasagna, sausages, rolls and pizza dough are homemade daily. Got a special event or party? Well, Bruno’s can accommodate up to 55 folks or bring in your small groups for a causal party or to watch your favorite game on the TVs that surround the dining room. Want wine, beer or cocktails? It’s BYOB. You bring the stuff and the staff will serve the sets ups. (That’s just what we did for our party and it worked superbly.) Special thanks to Kiepersol Estates Winery for providing us with perfectly, paired vino!

My Family is Why Heart disease touches so many around us in our daily lives, which is why education on heart disease and its ability to kill is necessary and effective. KLTV News Anchor Jennifer Hines knows this first hand. When her Dad was 17 years old, his Dad died of a massive heart attack. When Jennifer was in the 8th grade, her Dad had his first heart attack. He would have another heart attack a few years later and eventually would have to have double bypass open heart surgery. Being her father's daughter, she too has had heart problems. Jennifer had extremely high blood pressure with her first and third pregnancies and with her second had an irregular heartbeat. So when people ask Jennifer why she decided to chair this year’s Heart Ball, she says the answer is simple, “My Family is Why”. Jennifer has been actively supporting the Tyler Heart Ball for the past 5 years and is also the ongoing emcee for East Texas’ Go Red for Women Luncheon. I encourage the Tyler and East Texas community to get involved in this great cause! Every single dollar raised for the American Heart Association goes right back into educational programs and research happening right here in East Texas.

A Celebration of heart! Our evening celebrates: our work and mission, our donors and volunteers, and most importantly, the lives saved and improved because of your effort. The Tyler Heart Ball brings together our most influential leaders from the corporate, philanthropic and medical communities to raise funds and promote the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association. Last year, our Heart Ball campaign raised almost $60 million nationwide allowing us to fund the research, advocacy and education programs of the American Heart Association that are necessary for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and stroke in our communities. The evening’s black-tie festivities will include a seated dinner, open bar, specialty drink, entertainment by Austin’s Dysfunction Junkshion, dancing, casino and an exciting silent/live auction.

Heart Ball Tickets are $125

VIP Tickets are $175

(Your VIP Ticket includes the VIP cocktail hour at 6pm with chances to win giveaways such as $500 Susan Robinson Gift Card, $500 Gift Card to Stereo and Video Center and two tickets to Jimmy Kimmel Live)

For tickets and more information tylerheartball.org The Tyler Heart Ball has raised millions to support the life-saving mission of the American Heart Association. These funds have supported ground-breaking advancements in such areas as research, tobacco control, obesity prevention, and most importantly, the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke. While we’ve made great progress, there is still work to be done to further the mission of the AHA and impact the lives of the many people that live, work and play in our community.

Closet Oasis Article By: Kim Lewis Photos By: Rebecca Sanabria

There’s just something about a new year that feels like such an opportunity to start over or at least with a clean slate. Create a fresh look, you know!? Part of revamping yourself or your image is to get organized in the closet. If you feel like you look good, then odds are you will feel good. Funny how that works … Here are some ideas for the closet to hang your hat on:

No. 76 BSC ENE

B SC EN EM A G.COM

1.

Image

Your closet should be a space you look forward to reaching into. If it’s not … then you have not organized it properly. Getting dressed for the day should be fun. It’s your chance to start the day out right, and to set the image you want to portray to others. Give yourself that chance by getting organized. *California Closets has valet rods that are mounted between shelving, so you can set out your outfit for the upcoming day.

2.

Shop ‘Til You Drop Treat your closet, no matter the size, like your own boutique. If it feels like you’re shopping when you’re getting dressed in the mornings, you’ll be more inclined to play with different looks, colors and accessories. The more you can mix and match, the further your wardrobe goes. The elements of fashion are an exponential formula. There are endless combinations, but if the pieces are scattered and thrown about, the choices quickly feel far too overwhelming. When we get overwhelmed, we lose the motivation to be creative.

3.

Just Hangin’ Around Quick fix number one is to switch out all your hangers so they match. It’s low cost, but will immediately make your closet feel better. With all the mix of colors in clothing and textures, the consistency in having the same color and style of hangers will bring peace through simplicity. *If you are low in space, the slimline velvet hangers are a great option. If you are looking for a more solid wardrobe vibe, go with wooden hangers.

4.

Color Code The second quick fix is to organize your clothing by colors. Let’s face it … some days we feel like wearing a cheerful yellow shirt, and other days black just fits the mood. When clothing is grouped by color, we can more quickly reach for whichever color we’re feeling for the day. There is a psychology in color, and our mood determines what color we might feel like wearing that day. Organizing your closet is all about bringing some type of order to the chaos.

5.

Protect Your Assets Keep it covered.

Hats should be protected from dust in hat boxes. Shoes should be displayed in shelving you can see and easily pull from. If space is tight, use a hanging shoe display. Who would have thought you can fit 50 pair of shoes on the back of your door? The bottom line is when you define proper spaces, items are less likely to get damaged.

If you have any windows in or around your closet, be sure you keep proper window treatments closed. Clothing fades in the sun. If you prefer daylight in the closet, consider solar tubes with the UV rated glass. *For more dressy articles, I’ve included glass front doors into spaces, so the clothing is protected from dust.

6.

Island Style

Yes, a closet CAN be an oasis. If you have a walk-in closet, I suggest checking to see if you have room for an island in the center. Islands inside a closet are like work spaces. You generally want 3’ of walkway around an island to give proper clearance for doors and drawers. An average island will be close to 3’ x 4’. *For my clients, I have used islands or peninsulas to create drawer storage inside the closet for undergarments, jewelry, socks, ties, etc. You can even get lockable jewelry drawers to protect valuables.

7.

Light The Runway Let the light shine in. Your closet is only as good as the lighting inside. Make sure you have accurate overhead lighting. No fluorescents. To reiterate the boutique feel, try adding a decorative light fixture in walk-in closets. A small tabletop lamp or a large chandelier can add just the right amount of ambient lighting.

8.

You’re So Vain You probably think this closet is about you. Just kidding. But, I do suggest creating a dedicated vanity space either inside your closet or very near. Vanity tops are great for selecting the accessories that polish off your look for the day.

(Now, here’s where I admit that currently the bottom of my closet has a pile of clothes, shoes and hats.) But hey, every day is a new chance for improvement, and especially the rollover of a new year.
