First Monday Second Chance Article By: Tonya Boozer Photos By: Tonya Boozer & Mark Martin
Vendors and shoppers alike have been coming from all around to the First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas. It all began, 150 years ago, as a result of a circuit court judge stopping in Canton to hold court, every first Monday of each month. Wanting to watch the court proceedings, locals used their trip to Canton to manage their affairs and replenish their pantries. Many also brought their own goods to sell or trade at the courthouse square, and thus “Canton was born. Eventually, First Monday, outgrew the square and the City of Canton purchased 6 acres, moving it a couple of blocks away. Since, it has grown immensely as a result of individuals purchasing the adjoining properties to develop their own First Monday sales areas. Though it now takes place Thursday through Sunday, the one thing that remains unchanged is that people uphold the same traditions and keep coming back for more. One such person is Rebecca Ballard.
Ballard has been working the rounds of Canton for nearly 30 years. Back when booths were $40, she and a partner would make things to sell. “It’s funny the things that we did. We made these jumpers, and my boys laugh about it but I remind them that it was the 80's fashion. My baby that is going to be 30 was five months old at the time, in a snuggly, so we’ve come a long way since then. Now he likes to go to Canton himself,” Ballard reminisced. This happily married mother, of three boys, now has three daughters-in-law, is a grandmother of four with another on the way, and her home, with its many collections, is a reflection of her First Monday finds throughout the years. “I really use it all. It does make some people nervous to see all of that stuff all of the time, when they visit, but it makes me happy.” And she means it when she says she uses it all. Whether it is for her home, as a costume in one of her husband’s theatre productions, as part of the decorations for an event she is volunteering for or helping with, used as a thoughtful gift or to create something completely new from one of her finds, Ballard

isn’t “wasting money,” as some would think of her hobby. I just had to see it all and Ballard was gracious enough to allow me to tag along with her to First Monday. I was excited to say the least. I love antiques, and the older section surrounding the Canton Civic Center Antiques & Collectibles Market is my favorite place to shop. Ballard prefers to go on Thursdays because it isn’t crowded and things have not been picked over yet. I arrived at her home on a cold, Thursday morning, and after loading the shopping cart, complete with hand sewn bags for purchases, into her SUV, we headed out. On the way, we made a quick stop by the bank to get “change.” Seeing my bewildered look, she began to share a little of her wisdom with me. “You want to make sure you have small bills because it is hard to negotiate a $2 item when you have a $100 bill. You need to look like that is all you have. Always have small bills,” Ballard explained. For all that change, one must need a purse right? Not Ballard, who only wears outfits B SC EN EM A G.COM
with pockets. “You do not have to carry a big purse because you can carry lipstick in one pocket, chapstick in another pocket, money in another, your keys in another, and your phone in one. A phone is important so that you can take pictures of things your friends want you to find, when they don’t want to get out of bed and go.” However, after our trip and two fabulous additions to my own collections, I am quite positive her friends want her to find things for them because she is the “Canton Whisperer.” If it is there, she will locate it! It stands to reason that Ballard would have a knack for negotiating the purchase of these treasures as well. “My thing about negotiating is that you never want to insult people. I have had people say ‘well it’s not worth that,’ and you never want to say that. There have been some items that I look at and I am perplexed as to why that is so expensive. I never say what I’m thinking. I say ‘now tell me why that is so expensive,’ because the last thing you want to do is insult someone about their item. The negotiating part isn’t always someone’s favorite, but everyone expects. You just don’t have to be rude about it,” Ballard shared. Our first stop of the day was the Civic Center. While I have shopped there countless times, it was an adventure with Ballard. Her husband, Glenn, is the Director of Fine Arts and Drama at The Brook Hill School. With a very limited budget for their productions, Ballard creates all of the elaborate costumes using fabrics and materials found at Canton and other places. Right now she is working on costumes for their production of Cinderella this May, so we stopped at a booth with $10 wedding dresses. There were all types and sizes, and their styles ranged from vintage to fairly new. She explained that sometimes she purchases a dress for the lace alone, because she can not buy it for $10 at a stand alone store. During our trip, not only did she find a wedding dress, she purchased a bridesmaid’s dress that will be used in the production as well. Along with dresses, the same vendor had fabrics, all kinds of linens, blankets and even a rack of dresses that Ballard referred to as “the place where the ‘mother of the bride’ dresses come to die.” She showed me a vintage piece of fabric called bark cloth, named because tree bark was actually used in the milling of it somehow. Originally, many of these fabrics were used as curtains. Because typically they were not lined, the sun would rot the fabric over time. Before using, she has to wash it to see what survives. Previously, Ballard had purchased the same fabric twice, and used some of it as the pockets and sleeves for pocket tunics she made to sell in her Junior League of Tyler’s Mistletoe & Magic booth, last year.
As we looked around more at the same booth, Ballard spotted a wool blanket, with a multi-colored stripe print, that she ended up purchasing due to it being a great find and deal. She currently uses one, previously purchased, at the foot of a bed in her home. Although her only plans are to use this one for its intended purpose as well, Ballard showed me that it can be used as fabric for other creations. Throughout the day, we saw the fabric being used as a pullover jacket for sale, and another vendor was wearing a coat, of the same fabric, that was made for him by a lady at Trade Days. Next up, we made our way to the accessories. As we walked through the Civic Center, we spoke with a vendor who sold all types of vintage jewelry. While her jewelry was pretty, the vintage jewelry boxes displaying it were the real treasures. Next Ballard spotted a set of vintage glasses that went perfectly with dishes she already had. Being such a bargain shopper, she even negotiated a lower price. She was quite pleased with her find because each time her family gathers for a meal in her home, the table is always beautifully set. While we waited for those to be wrapped up, we looked around the booth at several vintage hats on display. “Of course I love all the hats … with all the flowers,” Ballard commented. “There are not many millinery places left in this country anymore. All the stuff like this is all we are going to get because the new stuff they are making just doesn’t compare. So sometimes you buy an old hat to get the flower off of it.” As we headed out of the Civic Center, Ballard checked her watch to make sure we weren’t going to be late for Dollar Bill’s drawing. Did you know that at 10:30 am, one of the vendors, Bill, has a drawing for three $20 gift certificates to his booth? Well I didn't but I do now! The only requirement is that you must be there on time to receive your ticket. “He has dollar tables too. He has a name. His
No. 14 BSC ENE
name is Bill, but I call him Dollar Bill,” Ballard said laughingly. Although neither of us won, Dollar Bill did have 2 large vintage Sherlock Holmes books waiting for Ballard, because he knew her husband Glenn loved them. As we browsed up and down the rows at Bill's booth, she found a stack of vintage National Geographic Magazines, turning each one over to reveal the ad on the back cover. “I have a set of 12 that are Santas and they're all framed. The classic ones had a Coca-Cola ad on the back, so the December issue would have a Santa on it. I love paper stuff like this because it wasn't intended to last. So when it does last, it's so special.” While walking around and shopping some more, but this time at the outdoor booths, Ballard pointed out past purchases as she came across them, and we talked about the “second chances” they had been given. Not too far from Dollar Bill’s booth, a vendor had vintage windows, and it was there that she bought the windows Glenn used to create the Greenhouse in their backyard. You would never think it was built from windows found at a flea market, but is a masterpiece that has been used as the focal point for two separate events in town. I have been to Canton many times, but this time was different. Ballard is a creative mastermind and taught me tips and tricks that only an experienced bargain shopper would know. For instance, did you know you can ship items through Greyhound? As we strolled past a rod iron outdoor rocking chair, Ballard pointed out that she had shipped a similar one to California on a Greyhound Bus. In disbelief, (but knowing the answer), I asked, “You sent it on the bus, like a Greyhound bus?” “Yes if it is something big like that and is an odd size, I put it in a box and they ship it under the bus. It is a lot cheaper and gets there faster than other shipping options,” Ballard explained. “One time Brady (Ballard's son) left his tuxedo somewhere, and that B SC EN EM A G.COM
next morning his friend's mother put it on a Greyhound Bus and we had it in Tyler that afternoon. That's how I learned about the Bus.” In another booth Ballard showed me a basket, referring to it as a “funeral basket.” She has a collection of about 30 white ones. Some of those can be found displayed in her home, but she also uses them for different events and at Easter time too. As we continued to walk, we passed an antique wood burning stove that resembled one she had bought for her husband. In several of his theatre productions, there has been a need for one. No one had anything like it, so when she came across a good deal, she took it. “If I can afford it, I like it and I think it is interesting, then I get it, and invariably the next production we end up using it. That has happened more times than I can count. We are always looking for things to lend authenticity to the stage. I don’t like to have fake things on stage, and because I approach theatre as a history person, I like to
BS CENEMAG. COM
teach kids along the way about the kinds of things we used to use,” Ballard shared, after talking about the countless hours she spends creating costumes and using her “junque” as props in Glenn’s productions. After paying for my shiny new, well new to me, treasure that Ballard located and negotiated a better deal on, we headed to our next stop. As we were walking out of the booth, she pointed my attention to a darling display of miniature glass hen dishes and various antique salt cellars with salt spoons. Sometimes things are not displayed correctly, for instance there were several vintage eye wash glass cups with salt spoons displayed as salt cellars. "You see the shape of it? So if you had something in your eye, you would hold it open and put this on there. Your lid will not close and you can wash it out. I have an old milk glass one and we use it. We've used ours," Ballard explained as she demonstrated. Close to the end of our shopping, she took
me to a booth with an impressive display of neatly pressed, vintage handkerchiefs. As she showed me several different ones, she said that she buys them to give at weddings for the bridesmaid gifts. Beforehand, she came across a white one with mother embroidered on it, so at the last wedding she found the Mother of the Bride and asked her if she had a hankie. It turns out she didn’t. “So for a dollar you can make someone really happy,” Ballard said. If there is one thing I can take away from my trip and experience with Ballard, it is her best quote. “A house should evolve, not land. If you just go in and buy everything the first day then there’s no story … everything should have a story,” Ballard shared. Although she may not realize it, Ballard exemplifies this in everything she does, by giving it a story. As our day trip, treasure hunt came to an end, I realized that while I have been to Canton many times, I had truly never done Canton until tagging along with Rebecca Ballard.

You Had Me At
"Aloe" Article By: Amanda Thibodeaux Kosmer
To loosely quote Lionel Richie: “Aloe? Is it me you’re looking for?” If you spend any time indoors, aloe could be just what you’re looking for. Our homes, offices and schools are a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, mold and other air pollutants that can wreak havoc on our bodies. By bringing the outdoors in, so to speak, in the form of aloe, lavender, spider plants, basil, Swiss chard and English Ivy, air quality can be improved. Health conditions such as asthma, allergies and inflammation can be eased by simply supplying your indoor space with these natural healers. Bringing plants among your indoor spaces combats nasty pollutants and improves the air quality in which you breathe. If any of these plants are exactly what you need, you can find them at Rainer Farms in Tyler.
Aloe Vera
Swiss chard
Lavender
English Ivy
Aloe vera is an ancient succulent that can be traced back to a Mesopotamian tablet that recorded its medicinal purposes. This commonly found houseplant enjoys warm climates and 6 to 8 hours of direct sun. Aloe vera is recognized across the globe for its wide array of health benefits. Jennifer Rainer, of Rainer Farms, states that aloe vera “is great for sleeping (and) produces lots of oxygen at night.” By clearing the air of benzene and formaldehyde, toxins found in paint and household cleaners, you can expect overall better air quality full of fresh oxygen. Aloe vera has also been used throughout the ages. Known as “the plant of immortality”, the great Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, used aloe vera for its soothing skin properties. The plant, once aged 5 years, produces a gel that can be applied topically to pacify cuts, burns, and scratches. Really, you had me at “aloe!”
Need some encourage-“mint?” Lavender is a popular plant among the flowering genus of the mint family. This lovely plant produces a relaxing aroma and is sought after for its calming and peaceful properties. Lavender is noted to reduce stress and anxiety, decrease your heart rate and improve sleep. Applied topically, lavender oil has shown to benefit skin irritants and calm restless nerves. Native of the Mediterranean, lavender is most frequently grown outside where it can receive amble sunshine. To bring the plant indoors, place the lavender near a bright, south facing window to achieve the optimum growing setting. This pretty flowering plant will not only bring a pleasant piece of décor to your home, it can also keep a calmer household… that’s why it’s “mint” to be one of our favorite potted treasures.
Spider Plant
The spider plant, named for its long, willowy, leg-like leaves, is another popular houseplant. There is nothing icky and scary about this greenery; however, it provides air quality control by battling formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, toluene, and xylene (found in household chemicals and gasoline additives). Rich in foliage with white flowers, the spider plant is a beloved houseplant as it is resilient and easy to grow. Bright, indirect sunlight and dry soil will keep your spider plant growing happily in your indoor space. No bugs about it!
BS CENEMAG. COM
If you are searching for a potted plant to liven up your indoor space, the Swiss chard just cannot be “beet.” This dense leafy green is in the beet family yet it does not produce any beets. Attractive with its dark green leaves and red, white, and yellow stalks, the Swiss chard is rich with Vitamin A. In fact, the Swiss chard, when digested, has been said to aid in a heart health, prevent diabetes, maintain bone health, and improve digestion. The Medical News Today states: “Swiss chard contains high levels of nitrates, which have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce the amount of oxygen needed during exercise and enhance athletic performance.” On top of all this leady goodness, Swiss chard is also known as one of the easiest vegetables to grow and makes and beautiful potted arrangement when paired with cabbage and lettuce.
The English Ivy is highly recognizable by its green, cascading vines. Native to Europe and Western Asia, NASA has named the English Ivy “the number one best air-purifying plant.” HealthyFoodHouse.com states that this popular plant is a “beneficial plant in the home (that) helps to reduce airborne mold by up to 94%! It is especially useful in the case of asthma or breathing problems at night. As allergies, asthma and breathing problems occur mostly due to contaminants in the air; this affordable plant may also significantly improve the quality of your sleep.” Ivies are a staple décor piece found in offices and homes around the world and are easy to care forjust keep the air cool with moist soil.
Basil
Basil is an herb that produces sprouts of colorful green leaves. This herb has been around since before the Egyptians who used its leaves for religious ceremonies. It was thought to be a magical herb in the Middle Ages when it was used as a defense against a mythical serpent monster. In its native soil of India, basil is planted at the front of the houses to repel insects. Brought inside, however, Basil brings antibacterial and antiseptic properties, and is said to bring a circulation of love around the space. For a quick garnish to any dish, grab a sprig of basil that is potted on your kitchen windowsill.

William Phillips III, MD CHRISTUS TRINITY MOTHER FRANCES ORTHOPEDICS AND SPORTS MEDICINE CHRISTUSTMFORTHO.ORG Knee pain is a common complaint across all age groups. In younger patients, this is frequently related to injury or overuse. Older patients are affected more by degenerative arthritis. The increased focus to maintain a fit and active lifestyle for all age groups has led to the prevalence of knee injuries in recent years. Individuals leading higher-impact physical lifestyles might experience an injury to the ligaments or meniscus structures of the knee. Athletic lifestyles can also lead to an earlier presentation of degenerative arthritis in patients who are still middle-aged and otherwise fit. The presentation of knee pain can manifest through a variety of symptoms. The most common is pain and tenderness around the knee, which may be in the presence of swelling and/or warmth. An “effusion” is swelling deep within the joint and will feel as if there is “water on the knee.” Other common presentations are mechanical symptoms or instability. The patient with mechanical complaints feels the knee “catch, click or lock in place.” The patient with instability will feel the knee “buckle, give way or slip out of place.” Pain presenting with activity is common, but situational pain, such as going up/down stairs, kneeling or with prolonged sitting in a car or chair, is also frequently experienced. The initial management is designed to reduce inflammation. Rest, Ice, Compressive knee wraps/ sleeves and Elevation (R.I.C.E.) are helpful. A history of trauma or symptoms that persist despite R.I.C.E. therapy usually necessitate a visit with an orthopedist for evaluation and screening. After evaluation, a combination of over-the-counter or prescription medications, physical therapy, bracing, injections and lifestyle modifications can be used to improve knee function and reduce pain. In some cases of injury or persistent symptoms, more advanced imaging and even surgical intervention become necessary to resolve the problem. Dr. Phillips is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery

MAMMA MIA Article By: Poonam Patel
We want you to think outside of the box for this Mother’s Day. Sure, moms enjoy flowers and chocolates, but they tend to be gifted the same items for many different occasions.
1
This Mother’s Day, be bold and wrap less. Actually don’t wrap at all, and most importantly plan ahead! We’ve complied a list of ideas that will give you and your mom a chance to experience something together. The key word is together. Why not enjoy this Mother’s Day spending time with mom, creating memories that will last a lifetime!

1. Movie and Dessert
Ditch your date and take mom out for a movie and dessert. Released just in time, Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn play mother and daughter in the movie "Snatched." "Snatched" will be released on May 12, and it looks like it will have you both laughing till the end. Catch a showtime early and then head to mom’s choice of restaurant for a sweet treat. Dessert is much better over a nice motherdaughter conversation.
2. Spa Day
Spa days are often enjoyed by many women, but there are some women who don’t get to go often, and sometimes at all. Our moms are always on-the-go. Whether it be work, or grocery shopping, they are always doing things that can easily go unnoticed. So why not let mom relax by gifting her something that will be beneficial to both of you. Take her to the spa, and together you can enjoy some R+R while having a catch up session.
3. Vineyard Tour and Lunch
There was a time when people thought that the only way they can go wine tasting was to go to Napa, in California, for a tour. #notanymore. You’d be surprised to find how many vineyards currently call East Texas their home. Not only can you taste the local wine, but you can enjoy some scrumptious lunch. Learn how to pair wine with food! The setting is a perfect spot to spend the afternoon with mom, while enjoying the summer sun.
6
4. Pottery or Painting
If you’re looking to have a fun girls night out, why not join the other motherdaughter duos for a painting or pottery class. There are many pottery and clay, and painting stores in East Texas to choose from. Some even allow wine! While you sip, use your artistic abilities and make art that will always remind you of "that one time with mom." You will also make some new friends!
5. Photography Session
Most moms won’t admit it, but they love to be photographed. When women know they are going to BSCENE in town, they dress up. Why? Because they want to look good in their photos! Your mom is sure to love a photography session, as a way to show the world that she is one hot mamma. The best part? You get to strut your stuff too. It may be awkward at first, having a photographer direct you to strike a pose. But 10, 20 or 30 years down the lane, the photos will be treasured evidence of the stories you tell.
6. Outdoor Activities
Whether your mom is adventurous or calm, going outdoors is a great way to spend some quality time with mom. It’s quiet, at least for us East Texans, the summer sun is out and the gentle breeze makes one feel instantly relaxed. Being the great outdoors, the list of places you two can go, and adventures you can take are endless. How about biking in your favorite
7 BS CENEMAG. COM
park? If you’re feeling a bit more energized, play a game of tennis. Don’t worry if you choose to play tennis but don't really know how, because it can always be a good learning experience and the time shared is what matters the most.
7. Cooking Class
This one's a bit tricky for East Texans. There aren't many places that offer cooking classes, if any, in the area. To twist up the idea, how about having your very own cooking class at home. This can be anything from picking a new, random recipe in a cook book, to watching a chef on TV and mimicking their every move. Either route, make sure to choose something new so that you and mom are learning something together. To top it off, have the dinner with your family, unless the recipe doesn't quite turn out how you expected. Moms love it when the family gets together over a good meal and conversations.
8. Staycation
If you really want to spend time with your mom, as in an entire day, why not combine one of the ideas from this list with a stay at a nice hotel in town. Moms deserve a little getaway, and Mother's Day is the perfect excuse. Book a room at a local hotel and order in, enjoy the hotel pool, rent a movie ... the opportunities are endless. You two can even pretend the hotel is in some exotic location in Europe. Just don't open the curtains. It will remind you that you didn't go far.

A hop forward lager with complex, citrusy aromas derived from german hops and wheat phenois. We use our house German lager strain to provide a fresh backdrop for this perfect session lager.
This pale ale has a slightly fruity aroma, with an upfront hop bitterness of grapefruit and citrus. This bold but balanced, dry-hopped ale is faintly sweet but balanced by generous amounts of the finest American hops.
Don’t let the darkness fool you. This is a black lager that is slightly sweeter and fuller-bodied than a traditional premium lager. It has a smooth, crisp finish, with depth of color and taste.

ETFB is one of a handful of Texas affiliates contracted to teach Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters classes, which for 20 years have been empowering families across the United States with the skills to stretch their food budgets and cook healthy meals so their children get nutritious food at home. For six weeks, participants meet together in a hands-on cooking class that teaches how to prepare healthy meals and snacks on a budget. Local guest chefs donate their time to teach and share their professional skills and techniques with the class, adding a fun and informative element to the program.
Jaqueline Ates, a widowed mother of two young boys, is a recent Cooking Matters participant. She visits a food pantry to make her grocery budget stretch since her husband passed away in 2013. Jaqueline not only provides meals for her two sons, but from time to time for their friends as well. “You know teen boys are always hungry,” she said. Jaqueline said it was an easy choice to participate in a Cooking Matters class. “Talk about food and you get people’s attention,” she said. In addition to learning about different foods and cooking techniques, Jaqueline said she enjoys getting to know the other participants. It also gives her an encouraging space and sense of community with others who share her interest in cooking. “I manage chronic depression,” she said. “So this allows me the opportunity to have something to get out and go to each week.” Jaqueline said she has learned a lot in her first few weeks of class and can’t wait to spread her knowledge to others that can benefit. “Cooking Matters is a great place to come and find a positive environment to learn new skills,” she said. The East Texas Food Bank provides more than 21 million meals each year through 200 partner agencies in 26 East Texas counties.

Before there was Facebook, there was the coffee shop. People were less focused on a screen, and more on the face in front of them. Yes, life without phones, tablets and laptops did exist around the 90s and prior. And you know what, few of those folks are still stuck in the 90s. They appreciate a conversation in person, rather than texting or Facebook Messenger. You’ve seen it. Think movie scenes, where in places like France and Italy people meet up at one of the coffee shops found on a side street, and talk for as long as possible. In real life, there are French and Italians doing just that. You’ve also experienced it. It has been an American tradition to meet up at a coffee establishment. When you want to hang out with someone to chat, or even go on a date, you find yourself at a coffee shop, right? There is no pressure in a space that is relaxed, and where food takes second to socializing. So narrowing it down to East Texas, where can you go?

Here in East Texas, it has been a struggle to find a good, sit-down spot to just hang out. For the most part, our only option in the last decade or so has been to go out for drinks at a bar or Starbucks. Starbucks is great because it is a coffee shop where the atmosphere is like a chill zone. It is lively, relaxing and the coffee options are endless. But is it really a place to just meet some friends to pass the time? If you take note the next time you walk into a Starbucks, the interior is used more as a work space. People take advantage of the free wi-fi, good coffee, and, at times, quiet nature. If you see 2 or more people surrounding a table, it is for a study session or business meeting. Who can deny unlimited time for a work space, all in return for buying a Cup of Joe? So when you go in to hang out with friends, it’s not relaxing. You are too afraid that you may be loud for the studious ones, and unprofessional for the business types. What can you do and where can you go? Go check out your local Downtown! You heard right. That “place where everything is old, shut down or torn down,” is actually a thriving area of the city. From Longview to Tyler, many small, creative, artsy and fun places are popping up in Downtowns. And get this, it is all local! Restaurants, breweries and coffee houses, there are quite a few places one can choose to simply go “hang out.” In Longview, people go to Silver Grizzly Espresso. Silver Grizzly opened in November last year, and is the baby of Connor Walters, Vincent Purvis, Vance Freeman and David Samford. “We all grew up in this area. Some of us moved off at different times, but ended up coming back. Vincent and I lived here our whole life. I never really envisioned coffee as something I’d get into as a career. Mostly because there’s nothing like that here in Longview,” Connor recalled. “There were two primary drives for us to open up something here. We started having some late-night conversations. … We just traveled a bunch. We had been to a lot of places all over the world, seeing speciality coffee. We just loved the aesthetic of the places that would make you feel at home, and also connect you with those around you and in the community.” Thus the idea of Silver Grizzly Espresso grew into what it is today, a local coffee shop in Downtown Longview. “We wanted to give people a reason to stay (in Longview),” Walters added. Silver Grizzly is nothing like anything else in Longview. The building, the look, the furniture, the coffee and even the name is unique to the city. “We spent months trying to come up with a name. Over the course of several months I’d look through a dictionary just looking for words. Every time we’d Google something, it would be taken,” Walters remembered. “Eventually we got to a point where we were like we need to take a more indirect route. We thought of creating an icon that was a symbol for our value set, not just for coffee but the community. My wife and I, we were passing through Yellowstone and saw a bear. It’s an experience you remember. It’s a rare occasion that you see
No. 40 BSC ENE
a bear. They are majestic creatures, beautiful and pretty powerful. There’s value in seeing a creature. There’s value in the experience and why you remember it. So taking the bear, just the icon, kind of symbolizes it for us. We want to add value into the coffee, tea and pastries that we are serving. We want to add value into the conversations we have with people.” On the idea of conversations, the coffee aficionados at Silver Grizzly pride themselves on having conversations with their customers, getting to know their customers and having their customers have conversations with each other. It’s a space for everyone and they want people to know that. “There are three primary descriptions of people that I see. One, people come in here for business meetings all the time. Second, half of the people that come in are for the conversations and to hang out with their friends and catch up. That’s a huge part of why this place exists. Having people connect more and ideas get shared. The third is that students come in to study,” Walters shared. Silver Grizzly, truly, is a place for anyone. They even sell beer on tap and pastries. But apart from the space and food, any type of socializing can be done at Silver Grizzly. Before, teens and adults would struggle to find a place to go hang out. Most every skating rink in the Longview area is shut down. The city only has one bowling alley, which gets full on the weekends, and the only other place you could go to is a bar. Bars can get loud, rowdy and is a complete different vibe from a coffee house, if that is your scene. Then Silver Grizzly opened their doors, and now it has became a social atmosphere. It is equally quiet and lively. That may have to do with the structure of the building and a foundation built with bricks in the walls. Or maybe it is the way the seating has been set up, with booths for privacy, long tables to make new friends, and side tables for solo sessions or a oneon-one. They also have the back, open space that can be rented out to groups. People come to Silver Grizzly to meet in groups, play games and even study, all while the noise is never an issue. In Tyler, Strada Caffè is of similarity. Strada Caffè was brought to Tyler by Octavio Téllez, whose passion to open his own coffee house started during his time as General Manager of Caffè Tazza. That was in 2008. After four years there, Téllez took a break from the coffee industry, which he came back to in 2015. He partnered with his former assistant manager from Caffè Tazza, and developed Strada Caffè in Downtown Tyler. “The landlord had a vision for the location, and along with their architect Mike Butler, we were able to develop and design the concept. We wanted a very unique place for Tyler,” Téllez remembered. “The inside tables were made out of reclaimed bowling alley wood, and the outdoor tables came from an idea I saw at a rooftop bar in Mexico City. I put together a drawing to adapt that idea to our location using cedar, then handed those sketches to a friend, Jeff Alderman, who spent most of his spare time to make them.” Strada Caffè opened their doors last year, and not only serves B SC EN EM A G.COM
coffee, but breakfast, lunch and pastries also. Very different from a Starbucks, both Strada and Silver Grizzly are unique in coffee, space and vibes. From the moment you set your eyes on either building, it almost reminds you of something that would be in a city like Austin, TX. To open a shop in similarity was a risk for our smaller, more conservative cities of East Texas. “I don't even see us in the same playing field [with Starbucks]. I really don't ever bash Starbucks either. There's kind of what's called a first, second and third wave of coffee. The first wave is when coffee started getting into everybody's homes in the 60s and 70s. We all started doing Folgers and Maxwell House in coffee pots. Then Starbucks comes along (second wave) in the late 80s and early 90s and starts spreading across the whole country, and introducing the idea of lattes and cappucccinos. Maybe they're not making it the correct way, but the idea is in people's heads. The third wave then is that coffee starts coming along in the early 2000s and made its way to this area. A lot of these coffee houses started by paying attention to the farmer, the roaster and the brewing techniques, to make things the correct way," Walters shared. The risk was one worth taking, because both coffee shops are doing well for themselves, up against the amount of Starbucks around East Texas. Not only has the uprise of local coffee houses been beneficial to the population, but also to the city. “People are now becoming more eager in supporting local businesses and building a community in unique spaces, especially those that offer healthy and high quality products. I think we all enjoy the idea of bringing life back to our Downtowns, so I am positive that we will see more and more businesses opening soon,” Téllez said. “A coffee shop is a place for everybody, whether you want to grab a Cup of Joe and a pastry in the early morning, spend a few minutes before work enjoying a more elaborate breakfast, while reading the paper, have lunch with friends in an inviting environment, or socialize in the afternoon while enjoying a latte and dessert,” Téllez added. In order to keep thriving, bringing people together and bringing together the community, not that they are not already doing all of this, Silver Grizzly will host its first Barista Throwdown. “It's coming up in March. It's going to be the first one in the area. It's a super fun thing. You get the coffee houses from all over the area, just baristas and coffee houses from all over East Texas. We have a guy coming down from ONYX, from North Arkansas, and a few people coming down from Dallas. Everyone comes and throws down their best coffee art. You compete against each other. The top three people to place get different coffee prizes,” Walters explained. “We will have to shut down the Espresso Bar for the event, but will leave the beer taps open. That's the fun of it. Everyone can grab a beer and sit around to watch coffee get made. There's three primary designs: hearts, tulips and rosettas. Those are the three traditional designs. It's a lot of fun for people in the coffee community, and a lot of fun for people who come to your shop to see how it gets done.” So next time one of your friends texts you to hang out, recommend visiting a local coffee house in Downtown, or going to the Silver Grizzly Barista Throwdown. You wont be disappointed. For more information, check out their Facebook. All photos were taken at Silver Grizzly Espresso in Downtown Longview.

1. New and unique retailers are springing up all over East Texas, like Blue House of Jewelry in Tyler. Blue not only has a cool name, it has really cool jewelry—everything from diamond engagement rings to beautiful investment pieces sprinkled with diamonds and gem stones of all kinds. This diamond and gem stone ring caught my eye and just made it onto my Mother’s Day wish list. By Eden Presley, its unique, elongated design delicately stretches lengthwise across the finger, with 2.53 carats of Zircon; half a carat of stones called “Boulder,” framed by the delicate sparkle of .94 carats of diamonds, set in 14k yellow gold. Stunning. Blue also carries lines that look a million bucks, but won’t cost you that much, like these diamond-cut gold and silver blend hoops and necklace in a rose-gold tone (silver, gold and multi-metallic tones also available) by Officina Bernardi. With a great price point, they are a definite must in every jewelry box!

Match them with a must-have pair of ripped white jeggings by UmgeeU.S.A. to tame the bolder patterns. While you’re picking out that spring wardrobe, make sure you throw in something extra for mom, like this large blush pink tote, powder-blue-hued purse or clutch by Simply Noelle. The pastels make a simple, yet impactful statement this season.

Miller’s Point was a lifelong dream for a Stephen F. Austin State University alum and East Texas resident. When Mize, the historic local department store, closed it left a need for a men’s clothing outfitter in Nacogdoches, Texas. In 2013, and with a Fashion Merchandising degree in hand, our co-founder Amber Miller set out to fulfill that need, and watched her vision come to life on the red brick streets of The Oldest Town in Texas. In 2015, Amber’s husband and co-founder, Bo, came on full time as CEO, truly making this a family business. Bo adds a completely different dynamic to the business and he and Amber strive daily to take Miller’s Point to the next level. You name it, we have it. We carry Vineyard Vines, Southern Point, Carnoustie, Southern Tide, Filson, Southern Shirt, Tommy Bahama, Patagonia, Southern Proper and even the celebrity favorite, Seven For All Man Kind. In the accessories department, we carry Smathers and Branson (needlepoint belts, wallets, koozies), Brackish Bowties (handmade feather bow ties), Dubarry (footwear and accessories), Trask (leather footwear), Bird Dog Bay (neckwear) and Daniel Wellington (watches). Last but not least, we pride ourselves on being a full-service outfitter and offer all types of gear from coolers to Bote stand up paddle boards to White Wing leather and canvas goods. All clothing, gear and accessories are of top notch quality. Since our opening, Miller’s Point has experienced unprecedented growth, both locally and nationally, and is now proud to serve customers worldwide. Boasting two brick and mortar stores and an online presence, we have quickly become a household, Southern name. Above all, we put our customers first. We want our customers to be happy with our collection, and feel confident in their purchase. Though we have experienced rapid growth, we are still a small town and want customers to feel like a part of our family when they walk through our doors. Check out Miller’s Point for Spring! We are getting new arrivals in daily, from tees, sport shirts, polos, hats and shorts, to swim trunks, paddle boards, coolers and more. You can visit the website (www.millerspoint. com) to see the majority of the store’s offerings, but the best way to find what you really want is to stop by and talk with someone in the store. We want to meet you! And be sure to come see us at our grand opening on March 9, from 4-7! We will have food, craft beer, live music and the best clothing you can find in all of Tyler.

Highlighting is still in, and of course brushes are your best friend. But now, the trend is to have glowing skin with less makeup, and punctuate the face with bold lips and cheeks.
Beauty in Bloom
Our newest Chanel product is the Les Beiges pressed powder. It's our new healthy glow powder that gives the skin a luminous, bronzed, natural look, without settling into flaws. It will be available mid-April.

Written By: Editor-in-Chic, Veronica Terres
Every spring and fall, while the fashion houses are hustling and bustling with the season’s latest strutting down the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan, style insiders are also excited to discover the latest trends in beauty. Will “pinks” make a bold appearance on lip pallets this season or will “the nudes” of the 90s take center stage? BSCENE’s Editor-in-Chic, Veronica Terres, took time to seek out the answers to questions like these and more, so that East Texans can start wearing what beauty bloggers probably already have in their makeup bags. She reaches out to local Dillard's Chanel makeup artist, and one of BSCENE's favorites makeup gals, Malibu Diaz. Q. What was the biggest beauty trend last year, that is still going strong this season? Highlighting and natural brows! Q. What is a definite toss-out-of-thecosmetic-bag product this season? You can toss out your contour kit. It’s not in this year. Q. What colors are trending this spring for lips, cheeks and lids? The colors for spring this year are bright peony pink and intense orange, for both lids, cheeks and lips. Metallics and shiny glosses are also on trend. Q. What's your favorite beauty look from this season's New York Fashion Week runways? The pops of color on lips and cheeks, with soft eyes.
Q. What’s your favorite makeup tip that you can share with your customers, and can share with our readers, that can be incorporated into their regular beauty routines? One of my tricks is to mix an illuminating primer with foundation, to provide a radiant, glistening look. It also helps skin look natural and fresh. Q. Do you have any predictions for the fall? I predict it will be bold, dark lips. Q. What's your go-to Chanel product, which will never go out of style? Chanel N* 5! It has been a top seller since its introduction in 1921. Our new Chanel N*5 L'eau offers a more modern take on the classic N*5 scent.
We have a new serum called Blue Serum. The difference from other products out there is that it’s like a diet for the skin. It hydrates, firms and helps make skin appear smoother. Based on the name, the three key ingredients are from the blue zones of the world, where people live the longest and are the healthiest. Chanel is the only brand that carries something of this magnitude. It’s amazing!

TIMELESS TREASURES with Wesley Beard Article & Photos By: Poonam Patel
Think back to when you were 5. Did you have a dream to become something, and today have fulfilled that dream? Wesley Beard can confidently answer “Yes!” As a child, Beard would attend cattle auctions with his father. It was then that he became fascinated by what auctioneers were doing, and how and for what auctions were held. “I would sit there and be mesmerized by the auctioneer. At 5 and 6 years old, I would start practicing to do that,” Beard recalled. “There was a kindergarten paper that asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said an auctioneer!" Since, Beard has worked towards that dream to make it come alive. At the age of 18, he was the youngest Texan to hold an auctioneer's license. Today, he is the owner of his own company, Beard Auction. Beard Auction is a full service auction company that does estate liquidation. Beard manages and serves as an auctioneer for the Antique Auction House in Jacksonville, which holds auctions and sells to designers, home builders and individuals by appointment. His auctions are open to the public. “How we chose Jacksonville, 28 years ago, is that it is centrally located. We can pull for a 2

hour radius. We can pick up the Shreveport, Dallas, Lufkin, Nacogdoches and Henderson areas,” Beard said. From the moment you walk into any one of his warehouses, you are instantly taken back. You truly can’t imagine how anyone could gather the amount of things Beard has gathered. Then you think about how he has been in the business for 28 years and understand exactly how Beard has accumulated all of his items. Not to mention, his passion is his job. For him, his warehouse is full of treasures. He has accumulated so much that he has multiple warehouses to hold all of the treasures he finds. Every antique or product in one of Beard’s warehouses is of importance, detail and history. Each item is hand selected by Beard and his team. Each item is created in a sense that every curve, color and size makes the item unique. Last, but not the least, each item has a historical background. Many of Beard’s antiques, something of which sets him apart from others in the business, are from Europe. “One of our specialties is that we sell European antiques, imported from Belgium, France, England and Holland. We travel to Europe to hand select the items we offer for auction,” Beard shared. And in each item, you can see the European history.
For instance, Beard just brought back a short, antique staircase from his last trip to Europe. Think the grand staircases found at Hogwarts in Harry Potter. The staircase Beard is in possession of is a very similar look, but on a smaller scale. You can’t help but wonder where that staircase once led to a century ago. Talk about a conversation piece, to put an antique of that scale in your home. That is what Beard's treasures are. Each item is, in a way, a conversation starter, to which Beard has all the answers. He doesn’t just serve as a buyer and auctioneer, but also a history intellectual. He is able to tell you everything you need to know about all the items he picks up on his trips. But how did Beard get involved in international business? “A lady opening an auction house in Houston in the early 1990s was in search of an auctioneer. Her daughter-in-law had heard me at an auction. She went all the way back to Houston and said, ‘I found your auctioneer doing an auction in Palestine, Texas.’ The lady called me and I started working for one of Houston’s biggest auction houses, at age 18. She did European antiques, so I made those contacts working for her,” Beard said. “We go 4 to 6 times a year, abroad, to select the items. People that come here [to the Beard Auction House] can experience travelling to Europe B SC EN EM A G.COM
without going to Europe in their shopping endeavors. People travel from all over for our auctions because of its uniqueness. We are one of the largest wholesalers in the south. We have people who travel all the way from Atlanta, Georgia for our auctions.”

We’ve sold some of the bigger properties in Kilgore and Tyler, and also sold the HGTV Dream Home on Lake Tyler. We can sell Besides international antiques, Beard also everything from real estate, to furnishings collects and sells local items. “We have all price and farm equipment,” Beard shared. “We points and merchandise. We sell from a house also participate in the internationally known to the furnishings for a family. For example, Antique Fair between Austin and Houston our business is driven by the four Ds: Death, that happens twice a year.” Divorce, Distress and Downsizing,” Beard said. “In the early 1990s my business started Anyone can find anything at a Beard Auction. out working for children of these loved ones. If it’s a younger generation looking for straight, cleaner lines, mid-century modern, they are sure to find that. In the estates especially, it may be brand new appliances, designer sofas or contemporary art,” Beard claimed. “At these auctions, you can find everything from a classic antique that takes you back in time, to something very modernistic that fits the current times and trends. If you travel and follow Beard's on site auctions, you might be sitting under a big oak tree, having the chance to buy tractors and farm equipment, as well as household furnishings. The next week you might be at a jewelry store in Downtown Nacogdoches. home guide Real estate is a longtime passion of Lynn Haney. She and her husband, Mike, a former home builder, remodeler, and BSCENE’S former Creative Director, have worked with some of East Texas’s premier home builders. These experiences give her a truly unique and multi-faceted knowledge of real estate and home construction. Lynn was the founder and former owner of BSCENE Magazine, before venturing into real estate full time. In 2007, she started to learn the ins and outs of the real estate market. Not only did that training help her sell property for clients, but helped her clients understand market trends from her. With over 25 years of marketing experience, her straight-forward attitude helps her negotiate deals to help buyers and sellers. Now at almost 10 years in the business, Lynn has endured both the highs and lows of the market, and with Mike by her side. Lynn has accomplished the Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist Designation in 2016 with the closing of 5 homes over 1,000,000. Mike handles all the tasks Lynn is unable to get to when she is 100 percent focused on a sale. With his skills in graphic design, magazine publishing and photographer, Mike is able to complete the smaller tasks that help Lynn get her word out. Experience counts, and Lynn understands the importance of
marketing and advertising your home to maximize results. With Mike’s help, utilizing the latest technologies, market research and business strategies, Both Haneys exceed your expectations and tailor personal solutions and strategies that work for your real estate needs. The most important thing Lynn can do for you is to listen to you. She credits listening as her oldest form of doing business secret. She will figure out what price range you want based on what payment you’re looking for. She will also find out what your long-term goals are. She will listen. She has a list of 7 things she can do for you, all of which will help you succeed in selling or buying a home. For Lynn, real estate isn’t just a job. The real estate industry is her passion and her hobby. It is a full-time position that she takes pride in. And it doesn’t just stop at buying and selling. Lynn is always looking to the future, and how she can further her talents in the industry. Along with Mike, she developed Turtle Point - a development of 11 lakefront home sites on the shores of Lake Palestine. Turtle Point was something Lynn longed to do for some time. With her love for Tyler and water, she took on the venture of the 2200-foot sandy beach and 17.2 waterfront
acres. With that experience, she is confident to take on helping the developers of Mockingbird Place sell over 194 lots located in Whitehouse. Just like in Mockingbird Place, Mulilo a new gated neighborhood in Bullard, Arman Homes has hired Lynn to do the same thing. South of Bullard, Mulilo, Elegance in East Texas, is their newest subdivision where they are building very customized spec homes in the $300,00 to $360,000 range. Johnson Humphrey Homes has over 50 years of experience in designing and building fine custom homes in the Tyler area, so it is only natural that they would choose the number one individual selling agent of Keller Williams to sell their spec and custom homes. With nine builders depending on Lynn to market and move their property, she has no plans to retire anytime soon. She is always on the lookout for new ways of contributing to the real estate industry, and whom all she can help along the way. As Keller William’s number one Top Producer single agent for the last 6 years, and with a “can do attitude,” Lynn is for sure the agent you need to call for the best advice and solutions in real estate.

4 Things You Need to Know About Mortgages Your home is a big part of your life, a big investment, and a big responsibility. That’s why, whether you’re getting a mortgage or you already have one, we want to make sure that you remember the following 4 things so you don’t make a decision that will have a negative impact on your finances. 1. Know how much you’re paying The real cost of your mortgage is more than the rate you see advertised. Ask your lender to give you the APR, or annual percentage rate, which includes points and fees, and gives you a true cost comparison. 2. Avoid “Interest-Only” offers Interest-only loans may seem attractive, but if you’re serious about staying in your home for more than just a few years, you want to start building equity. You do that by making a mortgage payment each month that includes both principal and interest. 3. Know your facts about ARMs (Adjustable Rate Mortgage) Adjustable Rate Mortgages offer attractive rates and may be right for you if you … • are transferred frequently for work • do not plan on being in your house for more than 5 years • will pay down your mortgage quickly

Tyler Article By: Amanda Thibodeaux Kosmer Photos Courtesy Of: Couples Featured
If the walls of your home could whisper images from the past, what would they say? What sights would they show you? A groom carrying his new bride across the threshold? Or how about the pitter-patter of little feet walking around, as the aroma of a homemade meal permeates through the windows? Did these walls hear laughter and see heartbreak? Perhaps some walls were removed to make renovations as time passed. What treasures are marked on these walls? Maybe a growth chart marking the height of children as they grew up. Homes are filled with many memories. Older homes are filled with even more, and there are plenty in Tyler waiting to be seen. Ginger Haberle with Historic Tyler Inc. will tell you that the homes, in the vicinity of Downtown Tyler, have seen a 326 acreage farm grow into a sprawling neighborhood, encompassing Chilton all the way to Old Jacksonville Highway. These homes have history and carry memories. Every year, Historic Tyler, Inc. puts on a tour of several homes, open to the public. It is an opportunity for the community to discover what Tyler was and has become. In addition, the home tours raise funds for this nonprofit organization that preserves and protects historical sites, such as these homes with walls that we wish could talk. And you know who is most interested in these homes, not just to look but to own? Young couples! A trend is taking place and adding new life to this historic area that has raised many families of Tyler. Young couples are renovating and beginning their own stories in historic Tyler, a movement we like to call “Hipstoric Tyler. We were curious to know about these couples and wanted to know why they decided to make their home in such a historic district.

NORDYKE
Clay and Marisa Nordyke’s home is in the Azalea District of Tyler, on Hilltop Drive, and will be featured in the Historic Homes of Tyler Tour in April. Built in 1936, their home is more than just a house. The neighborhood itself is reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Several young couples purchased their historic homes about the same time as the Nordykes. They have quickly become a community of close friends who borrow sugar from their neighbors, and offer a helping hand with home improvement. “Kids still sell lemonade on the street corner in the summer, and during Christmas time we line the street with luminaries and sing carols. In fact, our street and our house are so special to us that we decided to get married here last fall! It was important for us to share the place we've made our home, and this wonderful neighborhood with our friends and family from out-oftown. Seeing all of our guests gathered in the front yard, waiting for us to be announced, was such a wonderful moment,” Marisa exclaimed! While revamping older homes is the latest home improvement trend, thanks to design and renovation gurus Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper fame, home buyers are now looking for something different when purchasing houses. “Homes in the Azalea District are full of

character. None of our neighbors' homes looks just like ours. Although we're often frustrated by the lack of closets, and would love a shiny new kitchen with more counter space (and must contend with past owners' ideas of updating), we could never imagine living in a new build. We'll settle for cozy living and the charm, character and community that comes with it -- and we encourage other young couples to as well,” Marisa shared. Clay and Marisa attended art school in college and look for design and aesthetics when complementing their self-proclaimed “eclectic” style. "There is a sense of beauty in the details (from decorative doorknobs and moldings, to hardwood floors that have seen generations of traffic, but with a little love can still gleam). The fabric of the house itself feels warmer and richer, in both character and quality. As a homeowner, you become a sort of custodian of history, and of a place … a community,” Marisa added. “One of our most cherished features of our home is actually the towering Southern Red Oak in our front yard. We’ve been told it’s one of the biggest in Tyler. While we appreciate them somewhat less during the fall when we're endlessly raking, the Azalea District's tree-lined streets offer a charm you can't find in newer neighborhoods.” B SC EN EM A G.COM

features that the Cooks love about their historic home. “[It] gives an appeal that isn’t available in new neighborhoods. We were also impressed by the quality of the home itself. It would probably be prohibitively expensive to build a home of that quality today,” Monica shared, while thinking of how the home was built in 1942.

Close neighbors to the Nordyke’s are Casey and Monica Cook, also on Hilltop Drive. The Cooks similarly find that older homes have a story to tell. “Each house has its own unique features and tells its own story, truly beautiful and almost poetic,” Monica said. The curb appeal and large windows allow for natural light, and are just a few of the

Brent and Vanessa McKellar, along with their two boys, moved to their 1957 midcentury style home, on McMillan Drive, after living in a subdivision in Flint. “It’s a dream come true for us to live in a midmod house, and we love it more each day. We finally feel like our house reflects our

contractor and builder, to construct the home, along with two other homes in the neighborhood. Construction was completed on December 1, 1937, and the home was rented out until 1942 when it was sold to T.A. Bradshaw. The original cost to build the home was $6,000! At the time it was built, the area was known as 'Honeymoon Row, as many newlyweds were moving in and raising their families in the neighborhood,” Katie explained. This trend is continuing today as the “Hip”storic home owners once again bring new life into older homes.

Matt and Katie Marshall live on Rowland Place with their two young children. Their home was built in 1937, in an area that was once part of a 23 acre plot in the 1880’s. “In 1882, Benjamin W. Rowland purchased a 23 acre plot of land which extended from the southside of Charnwood Street to Dobbs Street, as far east as South Fannin, and as far west as South Broadway. In 1925, Carrie Rowland Swann, daughter of B.W. Rowland, subdivided the property into the subdivision, legally known as 'The Rowland Place.' Carrie and her husband, Thomas Elam Swann, built 141 Rowland Place in 1937. They hired John A. Williams,
