editor's letter Defining moments occur in everyone's life, whether or not one chooses to acknowledge them, they happen. Perhaps it's one's reaction that defines the moment versus the other way around. Your involvement in the situation can be direct or indirect and each incident, circumstantial to the individual, creates an effect that either makes or break us. I have to admit that I have had my fair share of defining moments over this past year and while some of them have left me feeling broken, others have restored my faith in humanity and given me a new perspective on life. By the way, if you want to know how your friends and family feel about 2016 coming to an end, do a little trolling on Facebook! I have laughed hysterically at some of the memes and gifs about last year. I feel confident in saying that for many people I know, 2017 has a refreshing ring to it. Regardless of the challenges we may have faced last year, on January 1, the clock struck 12, the ball dropped and BAM ... just like that, the slate is wiped clean. There is a psychological significance that comes with the new year. We instantly feel renewed and like we can conquer the world. Well, maybe not the whole world, but most definitely our world. It is as if we allow ourselves permission to let go of things that are negatively affecting us. We have the opportunity to reflect back on our situation, turn the corner, shake it off and set goals for the new year and a new you. Take Tim Tebow for instance. While he is arguably a household name, and understandably so, he has faced many roadblocks and challenges along the way. He is a phenomenal role model for our young people, and an inspiration to all and we are proud to feature him on our first cover of the new year! The beloved athlete is a two-time national champion, first round NFL draft pick, Heisman Trophy winner and multi-sport athlete, but his credentials do not end there. Currently, he is signed to play professional baseball with the New York Mets and is a college football analyst for the SEC Network and guess what? He will be in Tyler in just a few short weeks! On February 2, Grace Community School will welcome Tebow, in front of an audience of children and adults, at the Green Acres Baptist CrossWalk Conference Center for, “An Evening with Tim Tebow – Celebrating Faith and Discovering Your Identity.” Tickets are on sale now, so don't miss out on hearing Tim speak. The beloved athlete is a two-time national champion, first round NFL draft pick, Heisman Trophy winner and multi-sport athlete, but his credentials don't end there. And if that isn't enough visibility for local Tebow fans to obtain their Tebow fix, guess what? Tebow’s mother, Pam, spoke at the same conference center about three years ago, but this will mark Tebow’s first trip to the Rose City. The speaking engagement is a community-wide event and is open to the public, as the school's bi-annual fundraiser. Grace Community School is a private Christian school located in Tyler. Since 1973, Grace has expanded to two locations and is a Junior Kindergarten to 12th grade, coeducation, college-preparatory, selective admissions day school. “At Grace, our mission is to assist Christian families in educating, equipping and encouraging their children to influence the world of Christ,” Jay Ferguson, Headmaster of Grace, explained. “We’ve got kids who are international kids. Most of our kids are local from the Tyler and the surrounding community. Our class sizes tend to be anywhere on the high end at 24, and on the low end at 15.”

That changes who we are.” Tebow grew up the son of missionaries, and even after moving to Florida as a child, he returned to the Philippines as a teenager to spread God’s word, and do the Lord’s work, by serving the needy. To raise money for student financial help, Grace Community puts on a speaker event every two years. On the off years, they hold an auction for their fundraising event. As Ferguson explains, for some time now, the school has discussed what a great fit Tebow would be, as a guest speaker for the fundraiser. “We’re always looking for somebody who speaks to the mission of the school and whose message is in line with what the school stands for,” Ferguson says. “For several years we’ve been talking about how great it would be if we can get Tim Tebow to speak, because of what he stands for, his educational background and the message that he has. He has an appeal to younger people. Things just fell into place this year to make that possible, and we’re thrilled to make it happen.” Tebow, who has made a name for himself as an outspoken Christian role model standing up for his faith, will serve as an inspiring speaker, to not only the children in the community, but also their parents, their families, and friends. “I am very excited to visit Tyler and share my message of faith, hope and love. I am especially looking forward to spending some time with students there,” Tebow expresses. “I’ve been traveling the last three or four years, and speaking all over. I see so many people in today’s society that are searching. There’s more to this world than money, fame and power, and you can have an impact no matter who you are. I feel like this book is about identity and not being shaken, and about being able to have a firm foundation as a child of God. [It] is something so many people are longing for and wanting,” Tebow says of his newly released book, “Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life’s Storms.” “They’re searching for something more, and there has got to be more out there. What is it? Well, I can tell you

two national championships, and winning the Heisman Trophy in 2007, he also devoted himself to charity; raising money for pediatric cancer patients and disadvantaged children. “What I have learned is that you can’t predict what may come your way. So to protect your identity and stay grounded, you need a solid foundation. I have found that steady place, in a person—Jesus Christ. He has never let me down,” Tebow adds. In 2010, his vision took shape in the Tim Tebow Foundation, which exists to bring faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need. The Foundation fulfills this mission every day by working to make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses through various efforts including building Timmy’s Playrooms in children’s hospitals; providing life-changing surgeries to children of the Philippines, through the Tebow CURE Hospital; sponsoring Night to Shine, a nationwide Prom for people with special needs; providing care for orphans in four countries; and also providing adoption aid grants for families who choose to adopt an international child with special needs. “From a very early age, my parents instilled in me the importance of God’s word, the salvation we have in His Son Jesus and the responsibility we have to give back to others. I was so excited to create the Tim Tebow Foundation. We are serving children and sharing God’s love by fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves,” Tebow says. Though Tebow's football career has seen its ups and downs including having been cut from three teams, he has never given up, which is what he hopes to encourage the East Texas community always to do at the upcoming event. “I think staying grounded is one of the hardest things we will ever do in life. In life, you are going to have B SC EN EM A G.COM
a lot of highs and lows and eventually everything around you will be shaken. So what do you have to hold on to? Who are you? And Whose are you?” He says it’s easy to let a difficult circumstance cut into your pride, goals and dreams. It’s how you react and how you handle it that really matters," he adds.

In addition to Tebow's highly-anticipated speech, there will also be a special time for students to meet as a group with the athlete, prior to his talk. The evening will also include a performance by a community-wide choir, made up of students from local public and private schools. “The money raised during this event goes towards the Grace Fund,” Ferguson adds. As stated on the Grace Community School website, “Money raised through The Grace Fund provides the important difference that makes
the educational programs enjoyed by our children unique, undergirding the strength of the global community that we all treasure at Grace. Grace Community School's programmatic and financial health depend on a strong annual fund. Since The Grace Fund funds our financial aid program, many families are dependent upon this assistance to attend our school.” It is probably safe to say that if Tebow never adds another piece of hardware to his trophy case, he will be okay with that because his success meter measures life his way. “True success is not measured in physical possessions, but in the amount of lives that you change,” Tebow’s website states. Tush. Tummy. Inner thighs. Tush. Tummy. Inner Thighs. Exhale … 3, 2, 1. Inhale … 3, 2, 1. Every Monday and Wednesday at STUDIO B in Tyler, these are the words that gently flow like a constant rhythm from Kelly Hudson’s mouth, as she instructs her Pilates mat class students through their 55-minute session toward building stronger bodies.
But, it’s the New Year, so why not try something different and new to you?! Now is a great time in East Texas to try a variety of fitness methods that have gained popularity over the years. Why? Because we have several locations and trainers at those locales available to us, and ones who specialize in Pilates, Barre, Yoga, TRX and other forms of conditioning training. What’s more, many of these studios offer personal training sessions, where you can learn the fundamentals first. Then once you’re more comfortable and have adapted to the exercises and routines, you can move into their regularly scheduled classes. Joseph Pilates is the founder of Pilates. “He originally called the fitness method, Contrology, defined as the science of control, because one of the fundamental rules in doing
Pilates is to control the body’s every movement,” explained Certified Pilates Practitioner, Ellie Herman. In the book “Pilates for Dummies,” she explained, that Mr. Pilates developed more than 500 exercises as part of Contrology, or his pilates method. The mat exercises came first, then he built specific equipment to enhance results of his exercises and provide a way to allow clients to achieve the exercises on their own, without him having to spot them. Over the years, as his students learned Contrology, they began teaching his methods, and people began referring to the workout as “Pilates,” Herman noted in the book. In Pilates mat work, a series of exercises are organized based on levels, with one level building onto the next. You never truly abandon the fundamentals.
In fact, one exercise in a beginning level can be used in a higher level as a way to modify the workout should the need arise. In basic terms, however, Pilates “works to strengthen the center, lengthen the spine, build muscle tone, and increase body awareness and flexibility,” Herman summarized. Sarah Burton, Pilates instructor and owner of STUDIO B in Tyler, provided a layman’s understanding of what “Contrology” is supposed to do and how it works. She said to consider the function of a rubber band. In the exercise, two opposing forces reach out from a strong center, which defines the Pilates mat work. “Think of that band when it stretches,” Burton visualized. If we only hold onto one end and attempt to stretch it without holding onto the other end, we fail. However, when both endpoints are stretched, we create a stable and strong center. On the mat, we create this two-way stretch with our own body weight and gravity. And although some exercises appear easy to the naked eye, when done with precision, flow and control, they are no joke she explained.
BREATHE IN BREATHE OUT
Most people are familiar with Pilates in some shape or form, whether it’s having seen the “strange looking” contraptions used in Reformer classes or whether it's having heard of the Hundred, a common Pilates mat exercise that engages the entire body for 100 beats. But most people, however, probably haven’t gone ahead and tried a Pilate’s workout. Instead, understandably, they opt to stick with what they already know works in terms of
results and what they are comfortable doing.
Want your workout to double up as both a workout and a relaxation zone, then why not try Pilates? Skip the gym equipment, step out of your comfort zone and try something new going into the New Year!

What’s really no joke are the reasons why clients seek to achieve results through Pilates. Burton noted that her client, Katy Kummerfeld, began Pilates

as a way to get her abdominals back into shape after the birth of her daughters. Other clients, she says, are trying to recover from or work around an injury, while others are seeking to simply supplement their cardio with the stretching and total body muscle strengthening that Pilates offers. Burton shares that clients who have tried pilates have left testimony saying they have better balance going up the stairs; gain a clearer mind; achieve a stronger core; practice better breathing habits; gain more control over their limbs; obtain increased joint mobility and muscular flexibility; feel decreased spine stiffness and pain, in turn providing them with the ability to play with grandchildren on the floor; and the chance to recover from an injury safely after a doctor’s clearance, returning to their sport stronger than ever; just to name a few! Whatever your need or reason, Pilates can work for anyone. But as Burton explained, while the mat workout is something you can jump into, you might want to ease into it first with a few private sessions so that the body can become properly acquainted with how it responds to the exercise. From there, the teacher can assess whether the client should go right into the class or needs further attention. “Because each body is so different, a good teacher can give you tips on how to be successful in class, such as suggesting modifications and adjustment specifically for you,” Burton explained. “A good teacher will ask, ‘Where do we have the best feedback for the body?’ So, that is usually where we will start with a new inexperienced client. Sometimes folks can just jump in and others need a little more oneon-one attention on the mat or apparatus.” So when will you start to see or feel results?!

Burton said that Mr. Pilates was quoted as saying: “In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body.” While that sounds wonderful, sometimes it’s difficult knowing where to start or what class to do first. Some may even question whether they should begin their Pilates experience with the reformers or the mat class. Burton explained that the latter is essential to it all. Eventually, when you get into the swing of it, all you’ll need to devote to each workout is less than half an hour! “Even though Pilates was designed to be taught in a system with equipment and the mat, the mat work is the key to it all. That’s the beauty! You have the key to your own wellbeing and health. So, consider the ability to learn the work from a qualified teacher and then doing the mat three other times a week on your own, and no equipment is needed. It’ll only take you twenty minutes every other day,” Burton shared. For anyone reading this article that is still unsure whether or not Pilates is a good fit because they aren’t flexible or don’t have a “Pilates” body, there is good news! “Everyone who can move has a Pilates body. Pilates is for every body like each individual … because everyone needs it! Now, will you look like the chick or guy in the manual or on the poster? Maybe not. Maybe your body doesn’t need to move like that due to an injury or ailment. That’s why you work with a teacher to be guided and led through the work in a way that’s right for you, finding your lesson plan in the syllabus that Joe created. It took me years to understand this concept. And boy, was it freeing,” Burton exclaimed!

Not All Breasts are the Same One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Women with dense breast tissue have a greater risk for developing breast cancer – a lifetime risk that is up to four to six times higher than women without dense breast tissue.

Until recently, technology was the limiting factor when it came to early cancer detection for women who have dense breast tissue. The Automated Breast Ultrasound System, or ABUS, is changing that. ABUS, when used in conjunction with mammography, can increase early detection for those women by up to 36 percent. According to radiologist and breast diagnostic expert Dr. Don Wells, “There have been several studies that have shown without doubt that ABUS has detected small cancers that were not visible on mammography, primarily because of dense breast tissue.” Dense fibroglandular tissue produces whiteness on a mammogram as opposed to fatty tissue which appears as a dark background. Cancer also shows up as white, Dr. Wells says. He compares it to seeing a small cloud against a blue sky. It’s very easy to see. Put that same small cloud against an overcast cloudy sky and you may not see it all. “The more dense the breast, the more white that appears which makes small, early stage, curable cancers very difficult to detect,” he explains.

You may be surprised to learn that dense breast tissue is not related to size, but is primarily genetic. Breast density can also be influenced by medications like hormone replacement therapy and by substances such as caffeine. ABUS uses only mild compression and gives images of the whole breast that can be compared each year as opposed to scans of specific areas of the breast that may change from year to year. It doesn’t require contrast or ionizing radiation, but is a simple, safe and quick way to be able to see breast tissue. Dr. Wells says that ABUS is not a replacement for mammography, which is still the gold standard in the detection of breast cancer. “Not every woman is a candidate for ABUS,” he says, “but if you have a family history of breast cancer or dense breast tissue, it can be a very effective technology in reducing your risk for breast cancer.” uthealth.org 903.877.8793

Is it a cold or the flu? It’s winter, and the weather outside is indeed frightful. That means we are spending more time indoors with others, which increases our exposure to illness.
Are you doing all you can to prevent a heart attack? It can be overwhelming diving through the online articles, latest diet crazes and supplements to find a way to prevent a cardiac event. As health care professionals, we too still have a lot to learn about heart attack risk factors. Even patients with “normal” cholesterol levels suffer heart attacks. You should allow your physician to help guide a long-term plan, but you can do more through diet, exercise and lifestyle. Sometimes, despite a patient’s best efforts to prevent heart disease, medical intervention is required to save a life. When that time comes, it’s vital that your health care team offers treatments on the leading edge of technology – especially in life-threatening scenarios such as aortic valve stenosis (AVS), or the narrowing of the aorta. It has only been 5 years since the FDA approved a revolutionary technology to address severe AVS. TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, initially for patients with no other options, is now approved for patients deemed high-intermediate risk for surgery. Most commonly performed through a small incision in the leg, it is a less invasive approach to traditional surgery and is becoming the standard of care when treating aortic valve disease in the elderly. We are pleased not only to offer this exciting technology to East Texans, but also offer a multidisciplinary heart valve team to explore all options in an expedited fashion. Tyler Complete Care, a freestanding emergency medical center, was formed earlier this year as part of a merger between Tyler Urgent Care and nationally known Complete Care. “It’s the best of both worlds with local ER doctors, combined with the administrative experience of a larger company,” Dr. Brad Robertson said. Robertson and Dr. Bill Wallace opened Tyler Urgent Care in 2007. Dr. Jeff Leach joined them in 2013. Drs. Mark McDonald and James Ryman round out the five full time physicians, along with Nurse Practitioner Stacy Gregory. If there are any two physicians who work well together in the same space, it is Drs. Wallace and Robertson. They have been practicing medicine since their days together back in medical school. “We both go back a long way. We met the first day of medical school. We have been working together ever since, for over 30 years,” Wallace remembered. “We came here (to Tyler) in 1992 and 1993, one year apart. We both worked in the ER at Mother Frances for about 15 years.” Hoping to find a friendlier, more relaxed environment, the duo decided it was time to venture out on their own. In 2007, they opened Tyler Urgent Care, at the same location where Tyler Complete Care is located today. They changed the location’s name when they merged with Complete Care earlier this year. “We still have ownership here, and continue to see patients (after the name change),” Robertson said. “We were hesitant about the change and didn’t know how our community would receive the change, but based on our patient feedback, we seem to be doing great. We have more physicians and are open 24 hours a day. We are able to do more than we were before. For example, cat scan and other testing and procedures. It has been a good change.” At Tyler Complete Care, the atmosphere is unlike typical ERs. Initially, a patient may find that the look itself is more comparable to that of

a family practice. “We are trying to hit the best of both worlds with expanding the capabilities here as far as the 24 hour ER goes, but have a more relaxed atmosphere,” Wallace said. But it is still an emergency center and the physicians don’t provide long-term care. If you are having to visit the location, they will be happy to refer you back to your physician with any information obtained at Tyler Complete Care. If a patient doesn’t have a physician, the team at Tyler Complete Care will help the patient establish one in town. Due to the set-up of the facility, the process of getting seen is fairly fast. With 36 employees and 8 physicians, all ranging from part-time and full-time, patients are evaluated within minutes, depending on if the issue is minor or major. “An EKG is done within 10 minutes. Their total stay depends on their diagnosis and treatment,” Robertson shared. And then there is the comparison of costs. “What sets us apart is that we are both very cost conscious. We set our charges at an affordable and fair rate. We pride ourselves in being transparent with our billing practices and know that our patients appreciate the fact that there will be no surprise bills in their mailboxes down the road,” Wallace said. To conclude, why should you choose Tyler Complete Care? “The three biggest (factors) are convenience, cost awareness and, at the end of the day, the Bill and Brad factor. We’ve been here for 24 years. A lot of the people in the community and most of the physicians knows us,” Wallace shared. “We’ve invested a lot of time and effort in both patient care and trying to be an asset to our community,” Robertson concluded.

The style, design, menu, layout and ambiance are classically the same, high-end and first class. Of course it’s not surprising that Rick Eltife is the progenitor of Black Pearl Oyster Bar “on the square.”

Our party for the night was seven super ladies who make up the “worker bees” in the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce Contact Club. This club is a group of thirty “high performing” professionals who sell Chamber memberships. It is this group, along with the outstanding leadership of Tom Mullins and Henry Bell, that ensures the Tyler Chamber is consistently the fourth largest Chamber in Texas! Get the picture? These seven ladies are stars and it was a delight to share a dinner with them, Rick and me.

BE HOPPY Article By: Angie Dolezal With craft beer being all the rage, beer drinkers now have more choices than ever. Even though I thought I knew a little about beer, I found myself very confused by all the new options of craft beers. Come to find out, by expert Brian Gilstrap, owner of ETX Brewing Company in Downtown Tyler, you don't necessarily have to be a “hophead” to get in on the craft beer scene. Let’s face it, there is nothing more intimidating than when all your friends are spouting off these obscure beer names and you don’t know most of them. “Um, I'll have a, well um,” you find yourself mumbling. You then go back to what you know, a tasteless glass of one of those big name brands. Not because that’s what you really wanted, but because of the uncertainty within all those tap handles that you know nothing about. What I've come to learn is that craft beer is a social beverage. It is hand-crafted and intended to be shared with friends and family. Every day, more and more new beers hit the shelves, and taps are surrounded by people getting together and socializing. At this rate, if you don’t know anything about beer, now would be a good time to start educating yourself. It should be fun getting together with your friends and comparing different beers, but you can’t do that if you are the only one that doesn’t have a clue. Knowing more about beer flavors and profiles can help build your confidence in trying something new. I took it upon myself to research, with the help of Gilstrap, so that you are well-prepared the next time your friends invite you out to grab a pint.

So, what is beer? Beer is a fermented beverage containing only four key ingredients; water, yeast, hops and grains. Now, in the ever growing world of craft beer, the ingredient list is limitless, but none the less it is comprised of those four basic ingredients. The grains are mixed with warm water to convert starches to sugars, and the liquid is then boiled and hops are added. Once the liquid is cooled to room temperature the yeast is introduced to the sugary liquid where fermentation commences. In as little as a week, like magic, the yeast has done its work and created beer. Now, there is a lot more than that going into the overall process; however, for simplicity sake, that is pretty much all there is to brewing beer. First up, let's take a history lesson at beer varieties. There is the "ale," with which styles include pale, brown, porter, stout and hefeweizen. Then there is a "lager," smoother than an ale, also most commonly known as the Coors, Bud or Miller beers. Next up is the question that ultimately brings people to love or hate beer. What does beer taste like? To a discerning and trained palate, there are hundreds of flavor descriptions. To the average consumer, like the majority of people, you can break it down to just a handful of things to be looking for: appearance, aroma, flavor, mouthfeel and overall impression. As far as appearance goes, what are you seeing? Is it clear or cloudy? Some of the typical color descriptions are golden, amber, copper, red, brown or black. Too many times people say "I don't like dark beers,” or “I’ve had an amber beer before and didn’t like it, so I probably won’t like that one either.” When people say this, first ask them what kind of beers they do like. With a few more questions, more often than not, it is not the appearance they are discerning against. It might be something else less appealing. Once you have taken a good look at your beer, put your nose to the glass and take a whiff. This is recommended to do as soon as possible. The full aroma of a beer can quickly subside as the head settles. Think about what flavor you smell. Is it malty, hoppy, fruity, spicy, roasty, earthy, sour or smoky? Malty aromas can be anything from caramel to sweet. Hoppy aromas depend on the amount, so the smell varies. It can be described as the more outdoorsy

smells. For example you may get a whiff of grass, floral, citrus, pine, or a herbal smell. If you're smelling cheese, that is also a hop aroma. Don't be concerned if you do not know some of these flavors. What you are looking for is the dominant flavor that shows through. Don’t immediately judge the beer with the first flavor that comes up. Some of the more complex beers out on the market will have many layers of flavors that show through at different times To sum it up, think about the flavors during first impression, middle,and finish. Here's an extra tip for you: If the beer smells rotten, eggy, or like a wet dog, do not drink it! It may have been stored for a long period of time, or badly made. Once you have decided what flavors you are picking up, think about the body or mouthfeel of the beer. Some ways to describe this are as carbonated or flat, watery or thin, malty or bitter, and thick and heavy. For example, a light American lager might be described as watery with high carbonation, where as an oak aged barleywine could be described as thick, heavy and lightly carbonated. Now that you have learned the basic sensory aspects of beer, it is time to put it all together and describe your overall impression of what you are drinking. How drinkable is it? What is your impression of the overall style compared to other beers you taste in the same style? For example, it is not fair to the beer to compare a stout to a pilsner. Pilsner is a lager, where as a stout is an ale. One is hoppier, while the other is dry and bitter. That is like comparing a race horse to a dolphin.

As a little girl, I paid close attention to any helpful tips my mom would offer up for makeup emergencies. One such tip: use your lipstick as rouge when you’re looking a bit sallow in the middle of the day. There was a time when college was reserved for a stereotype of brilliant brains, thick-rimmed glasses trends and pocket protectors. It is now 2017 and the stereotypical college student cannot be defined. Universities are still concerned with test scores, but now they take a broader approach and consider the whole person. BigFuture.org states: “You are more than test scores. Colleges care most about the work you’ve done in high school. They look for students who have earned strong grades in challenging courses. They also try to learn about your character by looking at what you do outside the classroom. Take advantage of opportunities like the application essay and college interview to paint a more vivid picture of who you are.” Who you are and what you have done to contribute to the world around you will eventually lead you to your university. Patty Brittain, Assistant Principal at St. Gregory Cathedral School in Tyler, understands that discussing college at an early age helps build a strong foundation for further academic success. “We believe it is important that children think about attending college early. The children served here think of college as just the next logical step in their education,” Brittain explains. Patty also recognizes the importance of a positive college influence built at home. “We reinforce the attitudes and beliefs about a college education that first starts in the home. Many of our students have siblings at Bishop K. Gorman, so they experience

first-hand the natural progression through the college preparatory curriculum.” Once a strong foundation for the need to further your education has been laid, college prep programs can guide future college students in the right direction. Jim Bell, CEO of Capstone College and Career Advising, says that ACT and SAT scores are still vital for entry into a college of your choice. These scores, however, are not lone indicators of future success. “Some students don’t perform to their potential on exams, and some may perform beyond their potential in a classroom. Therefore, they may be very successful in a college classroom even though their test scores may not reflect that,” Bell shares. “As a result, many colleges will look at a wide range of indicators to try and get a broader picture of a student’s potential. When I work with students who have low test scores, I encourage them to put extra effort in other areas so that colleges can get a more holistic view of their abilities. A general rule of thumb for most is, to begin with building your GPA and the rigor of coursework in high school (such as AP courses, Dual Credit, Honors, IB, etc.). Beyond that, colleges will then look at test scores, community involvement, leadership development and involvement in extracurricular activities. The key is starting early. We like to work with students at the Freshman level. When we do that, we can help them with course selection, maintaining a strong GPA, developing a four year leadership development portfolio,
connecting them with community service opportunities and developing a strategy to help them gain admission to their right fit college. The college application process is so rigorous now that it is almost impossible to try and cram everything into a senior year that is already filled with busy activities.” For college hopefuls to find the right fit for them, Jim advises them to think about these important questions. Which institution offers what you need to equip you for your future fully? Which college will help you gain a career after you graduate? In effect, it is all about you! Thinking about furthering your education can be overwhelming and potential college students may find themselves swirling in a sea of flooding information. If there is anything to take from this, take these five tips from Jim Bell when planning for your college career. These tips are beneficial to both parents and students.

Jim Bell’s Five Tips 1. The best time to plant a tree ... is ten years ago. The second-best time is right now. If you haven’t started, the second best time is to start right now. Don’t put it off! In my 20 years in education, I have had countless seniors who have wanted to advise freshmen to take their classes seriously and start planning for college their first year in high school. 2. Don’t be afraid to ask help from others. There are many great resources available to students. You can get advice from your teachers, your counselors, your principals, experienced professionals, friends who are in college and even your parents. Utilize all of the resources that are available to increase your chances of success. 3. Take advantage of opportunities. If you have an idea of what you want your college major to be, seek out individuals in those careers to visit with and learn more. Shadow them, intern with them or even work in a low-level job in their company if you can. If you are presented with an opportunity to serve others, take advantage of it. If you are given the opportunity to go

the extra mile in class, accept the challenge. If you have big dreams for yourself, high school is not the time for mediocrity. 4. Learn to develop a good balance of fun and work. You have a responsibility to perform well in the classroom and give your best effort. However, it is important to balance that hard work with rest, relaxation, family and friend time, as well as time for yourself. 5. Pace yourself and finish strong. A track athlete running in a 1600 meter race has to complete four laps around the track to complete the race. Look at each high school year as a lap around the track. If you start out too strong, you will burn out and finish at the end. If you start too slow, everyone is a lap ahead before you begin to pick up the pace. You fall behind if you are fatigued at the finish line and you cannot catch up if you wait until it is too late, no matter how hard you sprint those last few yards. The successful ones are the ones who have trained hard, understand their capabilities and know the perfect time to push a little harder.

Goal Setting: Achieving Your Financial Resolutions This Year The New Year is upon us, and with it comes the annual ritual of promising to make positive changes in our lives. Whether it is planning to spend more time with family, lose weight, fall in love, or live a happier and healthier life, we all start the year with the best intentions. When it comes to finances, more than 57 percent of those who made New Year’s resolutions set some sort of goal with money, such as paying off debt, saving for the future, or reducing spending habits. So, how did we do last year? Well, according to a survey from the University of Scranton, 45 percent of respondents said they made resolutions of some kind, but only eight percent reported success in achieving their goals. So, what makes achieving our goals so hard? For some, it may be that the goals were unmeasurable, like “being happy” or “falling in love.” For others, it may be that they did not have a plan to achieve the goals, or their methods were unrealistic, such as eating only carrots until July. But, what if you set smaller, more achievable goals that can build up to a major success over time? Giving yourself small, frequent victories helps build momentum that will make the larger goals easier to attain. Here are three small goals that will help you take control of your finances this year. #1 Budget: Write it down. Live it out. Start by listing your income for each pay period at the top of a piece of paper before payday. Then, list all of your bills in order of priority (food, housing expenses, transportation expenses, and then other bills and debt payments). As you write down the cost for each bill, subtract it from your income at the top of the page (For example: Income ($1,200) – Rent ($600) = $600 remaining). Continue this process until you reach a $0 balance at the end of the pay period. If bills still need to be paid, place them at the top of the column for the next pay period and repeat the process. #2 Emergency Fund: Rainy days will come. Have an umbrella. Setting aside an emergency fund can relieve a lot of the stress that comes during a crisis. As you begin putting your budget on paper, make sure to include a line for emergency savings. Even if it is a small amount, put something away each pay period and DO NOT TOUCH IT. #3 Be Patient: Stay focused. True growth comes over time through small changes. Don’t look at someone else’s retirement plan or lifestyle and be envious. Instead, realize you both started in the same place. They may be further down the road than you, but you will get there too if you don’t give up. Make your resolution this year to be an “eight percenter.” Set a goal, develop a plan to achieve it, then stick to it. You can do it.

Love is in the air, and it’s been in the air since December. Between the Christmas holidays and Valentine's, everything from food to wrapping paper has hearts all over it. Have you noticed? Or how about on your TV with love stories playing around the clock on the Hallmark Channel? It’s everywhere, and though some may think many people find this type of atmosphere to be annoying, there are more people who enjoy it. Take me for example! I am a sucker for the Hallmark Channel movies, and some of my friends don’t even know that. For as long as I could remember, I have loved hearing the answer to one simple question: “How did you meet?” You can show-off that fancy engagement ring all you want, but I’d rather skip the “How did he propose,” for the “How did you meet?” Why? If there’s one thing I can remember about you, it will be the memory of how we met. I’m not sure why this always stands out, but it does. There is something unique in a sense that it will be different from anyone else's story. Whether it be something extravagant or something simple, every couple has that one thing that makes the story theirs. So it got me thinking, if I enjoy hearing these ... someone else must too! The Hallmark Channel wouldn’t be airing a hundred movies on the topic of love if they thought no one cared to watch them. I decided why not give the people what they want. With it being Valentine's season and all, as if the red, white and pink aisle at Walmart wasn’t already a reminder, I decided to seek out some dynamic lovebirds, in the area, who were willing to share their love story with the readers of BSCENE. One simple question, "how did you guys meet?" That’s all it took to get the "aww" and "how cute" going! So, bring on the romance and Happy Valentine's Day to all of you super couples out there!

“I saw him long before he saw me because we had a Philosophy class together. He’s very outgoing and very intelligent, and he would banter back and forth with the professor. He sat up front and they would carry on this very intelligent dialogue, and I sat way in the back. Philosophy was not my best subject, although I turned out to make a very good grade. Later on, I worked in the library in Periodicals. He would come in to work on papers for his classes. That's how we actually met, was through the library. I was very impressed, not only with his intelligence, but his charm. He was very charming. He had a beautiful smile. We stood there and just talked and talked. One thing led to another. We went for a drive together, and I was just overcome. I just knew there that he was the man for me. It was 1972, because we were married in December of 1973. I knew he was the one! He asked me out and took me to Dallas to this wonderful restaurant that is no longer there, called the Railhead. I was even more thoroughly impressed because he spent money on me to win me over and he didn’t know he had already won me over.”

“Let’s see, I’ll have to do some counting back! We met at a Christmas party, late 1954. Neither of us were there with anybody else. It was just a party where there were not dates. We talked and chatted a while. Neither of us have a problem talking to people, you can tell that from me now! After the Christmas season, we went to see a movie. He called me and invited me out. At first I was reluctant to go because I thought he’s older than I am! So this friend convinced me ‘Oh you need to go. He’s a nice guy. You should go out with him.’ We went to see the movie ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.’ That was our first date. From then on, it was like we were just kind of together a lot, even though we were not at the same school. We dated throughout college, and after graduation we got married on December 28th of 1958. That makes it 58 years this December, with three daughters we are very proud of!”

“I was set up on a blind date by his brother and sister-in-law at the time. This was August of 1989. We met here in Tyler, kind of on neutral territory. I wasn’t impressed at first. But then the next day we judged a local beauty pageant together, and I was like ‘Oh yeah, I like him.’ We kind of had a long distance relationship because I was in college and he already had his practice set up in Pittsburg, Texas. We started seeing each other and six months later we were married. In March of 2017, we will be married for 27 years!”

“We met in January 2003, at Rick’s on the Square. I was a cocktail waitress and he was buying a beer. He walked in and I’d never seen him there before. I worked there for several years, on the weekends, while I was a pre-k teacher and going to cosmetology school. I worked there through both of those things. He walked in and I told my friend that he was going to be my boyfriend. She didn’t believe me because I never gave out my number there. Anyways, he went up to the bar to order, and I went up to him because he was sitting in my section, and that was how I wanted to talk to him. I told him he was sitting in my section and to sit down (at the table) and I’ll bring him his order. He apologized and went and sat down. When I took him his beer, his friend was like ‘This is my friend Jason.’ So I figured he was talking about me. Then he saw me talk to a mutual friend. I didn't know what I was going to do, I just knew I wanted to talk to him (Jason). Anyways, so he came and asked me if he could have my number. I was like ‘Uh, yeah!’ Then he called two days later and we went on our first date February 11th of that year, to a Dallas Stars game, and the rest is history.”

“Jen was born in Virginia and grew up on the East Coast before spending almost a decade in Southern California, but we unknowingly had a lot of mutual friends because of her Mom and Aunt, who both ended up in East Texas. My band used to play at her Aunt’s coffee shop when I was in high school and that is where I came to know a lot of bands & musicians in town. So almost 10 years later, one of those bands was playing a reunion show at Rick’s on the Square. Jen just happened to have stopped in Longview at her moms’s while on her way back to Virginia (from California). Well, this huge group of mutual friends had all gotten together to see this reunion show and Jen is literally the only person that I don’t know, so I asked a friend’s wife, “Hey! Who is the beautiful brunette?” She then proceeded to drag me by the arm straight to Jen, tap her on the shoulder, and say “Hey, Jen! This is Nick. He thinks you’re gorgeous.” and then leave me standing there stunned and speechless. Jen was kind enough to break the awkward silence and invited me to sit and chat. We moved past the embarrassing introduction and I managed to ask her to lunch the next day. We were engaged four months later and got married a year to the day that we met."

“I was studying for classes to get into the nursing program, at a mutual friends apartment, in sweat pants, glasses, no makeup, a messy gross bun and with a backpack. Cute, right? Then Janti shows up with a group of guys. (He told me that the first time he saw me he thought I looked like a boy!) So, once he got there, I didn't know how to talk to him. I thought he was cute but the first thing I remember was seeing his tennis shoes. I told him, ‘I really like your shoes. Where did you get them?’ That was one of the first things I said to him. One thing led to another, and we went on our first date to the movies. It was 2012, and we saw ‘The Dictator.’ His friend even tagged along! He said he thought I was ‘alright’ at first because I snuck him beer into the theater, in my purse. Forward to 2015, when we had our dream destination wedding in Florida, and today where we have a little family of our own with our baby boy and two dogs!”

“We were both in Longview for the 2007 Easter holiday. John resided in Tyler at the time and I was in Dallas. We were both dining with friends at a local restaurant and happened to be speaking with a mutual friend in the waiting area, while waiting for our respective tables. Said friend assumed we knew one another from The University of Texas at Austin, because we were both grads, and abandoned the conversation and us together. A heated discussion about UT football ensued, along with discovering an overlap of our friend group (both collegiate and hometown). We’ve been having lively discussions about UT football and a range of other topics ever since. We will be married seven years this summer and are parents to one four-year old.”
“Mike and I met in Biology class at Ouachita Parish High School, in Monroe, Louisiana. I was 15 and Mike was 16. He dissected my frog for me! The funny thing is, on our first day of class he told his friend and lab partner that he was going to marry me! We had never met before! A few months later we started dating. I told him I would go out on a date with him only if he went to church with my family. And so he did, and I’m glad he did! We dated for two and a half years after that and got married when I was 18 and Mike was 19. This year is an exciting year for us because we will be celebrating 30 years of marriage on June 27th!”

“Rashard and I first met back in February 2015 at our cpr training. We never spoke a word to each other and never made eye contact. And even though I made it very clear that I was trying to look at him, not once did he look at me. During the training, like I said we never made eye contact or spoke to each other. So, that was a loss. I was sitting there trying to get his attention but couldn’t. Two weeks later, I’m in the gym on the treadmill listening to Elastic Heart by Sia, and there he goes walking into the gym. Once again we didn’t make eye contact. … So one day I'm on Facebook, a couple days later after the third time of seeing him at the gym. I’m just scrolling through, and the next thing you know I look and see a familiar face. I’m like ‘Wait a second, let me go back.’ I look at the picture and I'm like ‘Oh, he’s cute. Wait a second. That is the guy from the gym, and I’m trying to figure how the heck am I friends with this guy on Facebook. So i’m snooping on his page to see what high school he went to. He went to Pine Tree! That’s the same high school I went to. … So a few days later, I finally got up the guts to message him on Facebook. I was like ‘I feel bad because I didn’t realize who you were back at the CPR class.’ He responded and said ‘Yeah, I didn’t think you knew who I was.’ (A couple of months later) I look at Facebook and see a post that says ‘Well looks like I’m single again.’ So here I am going to every single picture, liking his pictures, liking his comments, liking his statuses, and even going on his Instagram page so that he can notice me! He returned the favor. So I’m sitting there waiting to see if he is going to message me, and he never did! Finally, one morning, it was May 3rd, 2015, Sunday morning before I got ready for Church, he messaged me. I frantically jumped out of bed and messaged him back. We ended up talking a little on Facebook, and exchanged numbers that night. We became a couple May 16th. We dated for 10 months before he proposed. He proposed to me on March 26, 2016, which was my 26th birthday! We turned around and got married September 16, 2016, and ever since then we have been inseparable.”

"It was the summer of 1986, we had both just graduated high school. We met at Tyler’s Nightclub which was located where Bealls and Albertsons used to be, next to Clicks. I was from a small East TX town, visiting the big city for the nightlife and Shane had lived in Tyler his whole life. After a few weeks of staring and smiling, Shane finally found the courage to walk over and ask me to dance. I had almost given up on him!

Our first date was at Chilis (still Shane's favorite). We went on to date for the next four years.
In 1990 we broke up - the only time we ever broke up. I was graduating college and either wanted to get married or move on and Shane did not feel ready for marriage. So I moved to Seattle in 1991 to "find myself" while Shane stayed in Tyler working for KLTV and moving up the ranks.
I thought we would never be together again. We spoke on occasion by phone and became good friends again, he even came to see me in Seattle. Then in the Fall of 1992 Shane called me. He was really sick - he's never sick. During this conversation he said "you should be here with me." We got off the phone and I knew.....he was going to ask me to marry him. It freaked me out - my whole life was doing a 180 again. It took some time and a lot of discussion, but a few months later he flew me back to TX and asked me to marry him. Yes I was scared to try again, but I knew Shane was my soul mate. We have been married for 23 years now and have 2 beautiful children Evan, 20 and Sarah 19.

INSIDE Lauren's Kloset I have to tell you a secret that will see you through all the trials that life can offer: Have courage and be kind. In the movie released a few years back, Cinderella’s mother is a beautiful woman with the heart and wisdom that makes her the heroine we can all admire and aspire to become. She once tells her young Cinderella, “When there is kindness, there is goodness. When there is goodness, there is magic.” Such sweet words every girl longs to hear…that there is magic in this world! Maybe not the kind of magic conjured up in the realms created by Walt Disney; but the magic that exists when we open our hearts to others and share kindness among one another. Lauren Bright, a junior in high school in Tyler, is doing this very thing. She is sharing her dreams and her kind heart with others and bringing magic into the lives of many young ladies. The high school girls she is helping might even call her their Fairy God Mother! Lauren is the founder of Lauren’s Kloset, a program offering high school girls the chance to experience their very own ball (also known as ‘prom’ in our non-Disney reality) in true Cinderella fashion. Lauren shares how the idea came to her: “After attending prom last year, I posted pictures on my social media. Soon after, I had girls sending me messages about wanting to know if I would sell my dress. There was one particular message I received from a girl that lived out of state that just hit home with me. She told me that she wanted to be able to go to her senior prom but couldn’t afford an expensive dress and wanted to know how much it would cost her to buy mine. She was really sweet and told me she didn’t have a lot of money.” This post, from a girl she didn’t even know, lit a sparkle in Lauren's heart and she opened her closet. Lauren saw that her closet held dresses and accessories she had worn just once and another girl could experience the magical experience of prom in these practically new dresses. “I realized that most girls would probably only wear their prom or homecoming dresses one time and I just thought If I could get girls to donate one of their dresses or shoes or any accessories to help someone who may not be able to afford it, then this just might work out!” Prom is a fairy tale experience most girls begin dreaming about at a young age. We want to feel beautiful and be the belle of the ball just like Cinderella! Here in the real world, however, fairy godmothers do not appear at the last minute to deliver your ball gown and glass slippers. “I feel like a lot of girls have gone through tough times of maybe not feeling their best, or maybe someone was bullied in school; made fun of or they could be having trouble at home. Getting dressed up and getting your hair and makeup done; looking and feeling beautiful can really help a girls self- confidence and just make them feel really good about themselves. Even if it’s just one night, I just want to help girls

look and feel their best and to be able to look back on that memory," explains Lauren. On March 22, Lauren and a group of volunteers will become fairy godmothers to high school girls in East Texas. Inside a boathouse, with Lake Tyler as the enchanted backdrop, she has planned a shopping day where nominated young ladies can shop for the perfect dress and accessories for prom. The boathouse will be reminiscent of a “pretty store” as Lauren describes her vision. In true fairy godmother fashion, the girls will also experience the magic of having their hair and makeup done; just like Cinderella received with a little bibbity- bobbity- boo and the touch of a magic wand. Lauren wants the experience to be memorable in every way possible. She says, “It’s my goal to make the shopping day extra special for them. We will have food and drinks for the girls while they are picking out and trying on their dresses, shoes and accessories! As Cinderella’s fairy godmother sang: “Put them together and what have you got?
