Our Medical Issue finds us at the merge of two seasons: Spring is winding down as the sizzling days of Summer lurk around the corner. I think this is the perfect time to share this latest edition of BSCENE with our readers where you will find a mix of health and beauty within our pages. How many times have you been to the hospital and rushed past the front desk? After surgery, did a volunteer share some kind words or hold your hand? Hospital Heroes: The Gift of Time shares the stories of local volunteers who have given time, compassion, and even popsicles to patients! Miss Vennie Jackson is 98 years young and serves ETMC every Wednesday and has been doing so for 29 years. In her interview, she shares her tips on a long, happy life. Do you remember the days of the Candy Stripers? Candy Stripers were young female hospital volunteers during the 1940’s to the early 1970’s. They wore red and white uniforms reminiscent of the candy cane and assisted in the hospital setting in many areas. Some of our Candy Stripers loved volunteering so much that they became nurses themselves! Read their stories and catch a glimpse at how serving others can bring much joy in your own life. Blueberries! The super-fruit of Summer! With the Texas Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches in June, we have scoured East Texas for the many ways this fruit can benefit your health. We have found that this berry is not only superbly healthy but is multi-talented as well. Check out A Berry Sweet Summer and find recipes and DIY instructions on how to use blueberries as a yummy treat for your taste buds as well as how to incorporate them into your much needed spa days. We also have something “berry” special for the kiddos this summer when the summer-time blues begin to hit! East Texas Spine and Joint and Balance of Tyler have joined forces to increase recovery time after surgery. It’s amazing what the help of a dietitian and personalized workouts can do for the body. Healing is at its finest with these two businesses as they work with you to create and individualized plan for recovery. And can I just say: What is up with this eyebrow trend? I believe healthy brows help frame your face but some brows just need some help. The Brow Guy shares his tips on how to get the perfect brow without looking like a caterpillar just crawled on your face. I hope you enjoy our Medical Issue and find some enlightening and entertaining reads. I would like to wish everyone a farewell to spring and hello to summer before the heat settles in. Happy reading!

ATheCollaboration for Change: Women’s Fund of Smith County Article By: Krystal Phillips Photos Courtesy of The Women's Fund
No. 10 BSC ENE
B SC EN EM A G.COM
Throughout East Texas there is a giving spirit that lingers throughout the community. It is contagious as it spreads throughout each city. Person to person this feeling of comradery inspires change, influences growth, and kick-starts generosity for fellow East Texans. This is but one of the qualities that makes East Texas known for its’ deep-rooted kindness. Encompassing this, one extraordinary group of women united to share their passion for giving and formed The Women’s Fund of Smith County. The Women’s Fund of Smith County was created in 2007 as a collective giving and grant-making circle, with a mission of leveraging the philanthropic capacity of women as a catalyst for positive change. Kristen Seeber began her role as President/CEO of The Women’s Fund in January of 2016. “Learning more about philanthropy and the deeper impact of giving is one of the reasons which drew me to the Women’s Fund,” Seeber says. “There’s really nothing quite like a group of women, we are stronger together.” And The Women’s Fund has proved this to be true throughout all of East Texas. Their philanthropic efforts have raised millions of dollars, created opportunities, and touched the lives of many. “Women have always been invested in family and community. To that end, we have always been philanthropists committed to working together for the welfare of others,” Seeber says, and this commitment has undoubtedly given opportunity to others with a passion to serve. Celebrating their tenth year of giving with a cumulative total economic impact on Smith County of $1 million. The Women’s Fund has only just begun their journey to impact East Texas. “Philanthropy done well is creative, collaborative and compassionate,” Seeber says, “at its best, it is welcoming and inclusive, innovative and courageous. The results of giving can be phenomenal, especially if there is a sense of trust and openness and a willingness to shed barriers, share the credit and look for partners.” Through their members’ annual giving, the Women’s Fund awards grants to nonprofit agencies for specific programs that will better the lives of women and children in Smith County. Each member of the Women’s Fund participates in the grants process, through her giving and her vote regarding the grants to be awarded each year. One of the four grants awarded to The Women’s Fund for the year 2017 is to Meals on Wheels Ministry to initiate and implement their program “Sunrise Senior Servings”. This grant will go to delivering breakfast meals to female clients of MOWM living in Smith County. By providing shelf-stable breakfast items, these most nutritionally at-risk clients are assured the physical and emotional comfort of having enough food each day and remain living independently in BS CENEMAG. COM
their own homes. The mission of Meals on Wheels Ministry is to deliver nutritious meals, safety checks and other services that enable seniors and disabled citizens to remain in their own homes. Meals on Wheels Ministry does this by delivering a hot, freshly prepared lunchtime meals directly to the homes of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Zoe Lawhorn, the Vice President of Development and Public Relations for Meals on Wheels, directs fundraising efforts, manages grants, manages publicity efforts and oversees the volunteer department. “For a person living alone, Lawhorn says, this simple visit is a barrier between an independent life at home and one spent in long, nursing home care.” When Meals on Wheels began planning the breakfast food program, they knew that the East Texas Food Bank had a donor that generously gave funds in support of senior nutrition. “We knew that Sunrise Senior Servings would be the perfect fit”, Lawhorn says. Therefore a beautiful collaboration between The Women’s Fund of Smith County, Meals on Wheels and the East Texas Food Bank was formed. “Not only has funding from this grant helped kick start the program, we are also able to buy the contents of the breakfast boxes from the East Texas Food Bank,” Lawhorn says. How will this breakfast program impact the East Texas community and it’s residents? “Imagine waking in the morning to the crushing pain of hunger; for many of our most vulnerable clients, the morning brings with it the discomfort and despair of an empty tummy.” Although the meals already delivered are designed by a dietitian to meet the nutritional needs of the population Meals on Wheels serves, these meals only satisfy 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowance. This is simply not enough for those who have no other nutritional resources. “We imagine our clients waking with hunger pains, awaiting delivery of their meals,” Lawhorn says. “We hear them when they describe rationing their meals to last throughout the day, and we can only imagine the struggles they face over the weekends. As a part of our recent strategic planning process, Meals on Wheels Ministry identified breakfast as the most cost effective and convenient was to meet this crushing need.”

Meals on Wheels Ministry of Smith County has been a catalyst for giving back in East Texas for decades, but they are continuously evolving and growing to better serve the community in need. Lawhorn discussed just a few of the upcoming projects Meals on Wheels has in store for the future. “We are excited about expanding our programming to include more meals, higher quality food and better tasting menus, and also adding new events and building our pet food program, called “Meals Fur Pets.”
With two of the most steadfast and generous organizations in East Texas growing rapidly there is a whole new excitement for what is to come. How can more East Texans get involved to show their support? One of the greatest ways to get involved with Meals on Wheels is by becoming a volunteer. “Our volunteer drivers donate their time, their fuel and the use of their own vehicles and deliver meals directly to the homebound elderly and disabled clients. Most of our volunteers say that they believe the blessing they receive makes volunteering for Meals on Wheels an experience unlike any other.” The Women’s Fund welcomes new members with open arms as well. New membership to their Giving Circle is open to any woman who would like to be a part of collective giving and grant making. Two signature events of The Women’s Fund are the Mother’s Day Luncheon (Honoring Women Who Inspire Us) which will be May 11th this year, and the Power of the Purse Celebration Luncheon which will be November 14th. The Power of the Purse Luncheon is one of the largest gatherings of women in Smith County, focused on giving back to the community and supporting nonprofits that help women and children. Proceeds from these events benefit the mission of the Women’s Fund and outreach to women and children

in Smith County. In addition to their signature events, The Women’s Fund has developed a new initiative that is sure to keep the philanthropic spirit alive and growing throughout East Texas. This initiative is G.I.V.E. (Girls Invested in Volunteer Efforts). This unique program teaches area high school girls (grades 10-12) about philanthropy – its purpose and its impact. The girls work, together, to raise their own funds, research local agencies, review grant applications and vote on the organization that will receive their annual grant award. Patterned after the Women’s Fund model, this is an opportunity to mentor young ladies as they work together to experience collective giving and grant making. Since 2014, these girls have raised and given over $17,000 to deserving nonprofits in Smith County. Seeber and the Women’s Fund of Smith County could not be more thrilled about this initiative and what it means for the future of our community. “Because of what they learn through this program, these girls become givers for life! We are proud of our future philanthropists!” As separate organizations, The Women’s Fund of Smith County, Meals on Wheels Ministry and the East Texas Food Bank already touch the lives of so many. Their day-to-day operations may look a little different, but their ultimate goal remains the same: to make a difference. Just imagine how great of an impact this collaboration between the three growing, giving organizations can be. Kristen Seeber says it best, “When we want something significant to happen, to make a life matter, we connect with one another and we put our hearts and minds together. If we each do a small thing, and we do it collaboratively, anything is possible.”

Hospital Heroes The Gift of Time
Article By: Amanda Thibodeaux Kosmer
Sometimes we pass heroes in our path not knowing their story and miss our chance to say Thank You. BSCENE would like to honor a few of these heroes who have given something priceless: The Gift of Time. Below, you will find six ladies’ stories as they share their love for volunteering in our area hospitals. This is our chance to say "thank you". Thank you to these volunteers, and many more, for opening your hearts and giving your time; a gift to be cherished for all the lives you have touched.

Vennie Lee Jackson, 98 Volunteer at East Texas Medical Center A little bit about Vennie Lee: Miss Vennie Lee was born on September 11, 1918, and is from a farm in Flint. She has three sisters and seven brothers. She first joined a church in the country when she was 7 and has been a member of College Hill Baptist Church since 1945. Miss Vennie Lee is proud to say that she voted for Franklin Roosevelt and still dreams of visiting Washington D.C. She states that she is healthy; only seeing the doctor twice a year. Vennie Lee’s career before becoming a volunteer: She holds a Master’s Degree from East Texas State University in Commerce and taught 5th grade English in Whitehouse. Volunteering by the numbers: Miss Vennie Lee has been volunteering in the hospital system since 1988! Can you tell us about your days as a hospital volunteer? I have volunteered at ETMC for 29 years. After retiring from teaching, I took off one year and then knew I wanted to help the community… How does volunteering differ from the days when you were a Candy Striper to volunteering today? Children under the age of 12 were not allowed to visit patients.
Why do you enjoy volunteering? I like having contact with people, being involved and making friends. Tips on living a long active life from Miss Vennie herself: She still tends to her own business, she keeps busy both physically and mentally, she does a crossword puzzle every day, she walks two miles, four days a week, and she eats healthy: real food and she loves fresh garden vegetables!
Marie Griffith, 92 Volunteer at Longview Regional Medical Center A little bit about Marie: Marie was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She met her husband during WWII when he was a soldier in the Navy stationed in Philadelphia. The Navy-Mother’s Club held a dance every Saturday night for young men and women in the Navy. Marie and her husband met at one of these dances and 30 days later got married. Sadly, Marie is widowed but says she has been very lucky in life. She has three children, ten grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. About Marie’s life before becoming a volunteer: Marie worked at a naval supply depot from 1941-42 in Philadelphia. Her late husband was from Tyler, and they moved back to Tyler; eventually owning a Dairy Queen in Gladewater. Volunteering by the numbers: Marie has volunteered almost 17 years. She has accumulated 7,100 hours and volunteers two days a week at the 709 Information Desk and the Senior Circle Center. Why do you enjoy volunteering? When my husband passed away, I felt like I needed something to occupy my time. Volunteering has been such a pleasure. I have met some wonderful people, and some have become dear friends. I feel a sense of gratification that I have helped people when my shift is over and am thankful to the good Lord for giving me the opportunity to serve others. Interesting tidbit: Marie exercises four days a week, including Tai Chi, at the Senior Circle Center.

Christine Martinez, 68
Previous Candy Striper and Volunteer at Christus Mother Frances Hospital Tell us a little about yourself: I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. We moved to Texas when my dad moved here to work in the office of The Cotton Belt Railroad, and we all became Texans! Did you have a career before becoming a hospital volunteer? I worked in the Brookshire’s office for 40 years before retiring. How long have you been a hospital volunteer? This go-round, for five years, and then on and off since 2007 (not counting my days as a Candy Striper). Can you tell us about your days as a Candy Striper? I was (a Candy Striper) in high school and did it from 1964-1966. I thought back then that I wanted to be a nurse so I got into Candy Striping. We wore the red and white uniforms (my mother sewed my uniform), and we took snacks to the patients. How does volunteering differ from the days when you were a Candy Striper to volunteering today? Back then I was helping the actual patients. Now I work behind the scenes doing mail-outs and sewing puppets to give to the children who visit the hospital.
As a hospital volunteer, what is your most memorable moment or story you can share with us? When I am at the hospital, and I see a child playing with one of the puppets that I made… it is something they can play with for hours, and it brings me joy knowing that I had a hand in it. Why do you enjoy volunteering? It keeps me busy and gives me something to look forward to. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? If you’re thinking about volunteering, just do it! You’ll love it!
Chesley Walters Previous Candy Striper at East Texas Medical Center Tell us a little about yourself: I grew up in Tyler and am married to Ted Walters. We have three sons, three grandsons, and a granddaughter on the way. Did you have a career before becoming a hospital volunteer? No, I was a Candy Striper in the summer as a teenager. I probably volunteered 3 to 4 years in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Students were not required to have volunteer credits then, but my mom made sure we stayed busy. Can you tell us about your days as a Candy Striper? ETMC was a small hospital. I can remember working in the ER with my friend, Stephanie Smyth, and having lots of fun. I am sure we got in trouble. I just don’t remember that part. I found the field of medicine interesting and was not grossed out by any of it. It was because Chesley followed her friend into candy striping that she eventually became an RN for about 25 years! How does volunteering differ from the days when you were a Candy Striper to volunteering today? There was not as many restrictions and regulations and volunteers were able to do more then. Courtesy Photo
As a hospital volunteer, what is your most memorable moment or story you can share with us? I was working on one of the patient care floors, sitting in the nursing station waiting for a job. Dr. Raymond Hedge came out of the elevator, saw me, and in his loud voice, got on to me about something his daughter and I had done the night before. I was so embarrassed! Why do you enjoy volunteering? I feel I have been very fortunate in my life and enjoy giving back.
Glynnda Rogers, 66 Previous Candy Striper and Volunteer at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler Tell us a little about yourself: I was born in Tyler and grew up in Ft. Worth. I live on my grandparents’ farm outside of Swinney Town. I will be 66 this month and can hardly believe I am now a senior! Did you have a career before becoming a hospital volunteer? I have spent my life in the healthcare field. I volunteered as a candy striper and then as a ward clerk until I was old enough for them to pay me. I retired last year as a nursing home administrator. How long have you been a hospital volunteer? My family volunteers at UTNE and I joined the ranks as soon as I could. My father is the ‘popcorn man’ and my mother volunteers at the Riter Center front desk. Can you tell us about your days as a Candy Striper? I was a Candy Striper in 1966 for one summer and loved everything about the job. We pulled children in red wagons after their tonsillectomies. They gave us the Candy Striper uniform, but I wore a blouse and culottes to be able to play with the children.
Courtesy Photo
How does volunteering differ from the days when you were a Candy Striper to volunteering today? I don’t think volunteering is different today; it is simply helping where you are needed. It is showing a lost person where their appointment is or holding a hand of a nervous patient. As a hospital volunteer, what is your most memorable moment or story you can share with us? The best fun was pulling the kids in the wagons after their tonsillectomies. We would have two kids sucking on popsicles! We were babysitters. Why do you enjoy volunteering? Because it is fun! How many times do you get to give kids popsicles? And I get to make new friends. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? We have a nice gift shop. Come and visit because we have wonderful items such as clothing, candy, and decorations for your home. I do my Christmas shopping there!
Dottie Buie Volunteer at East Texas Medical Center Tell us a little about yourself: I have lived in Tyler since 1962. I have one son, Dr. Kelly Mack, and daughter-in-law, Patti; and their two children, Adam and Sara. I have a step-daughter, Claudia, and her son, Cody, and his sweet son and daughter. Did you have a career before becoming a hospital volunteer? I was a RN in many areas but most of the time I was in the operating room. I was a supervisor in Austin and at ETMC. I also taught nursing the last ten years of my employment. How long have you been a hospital volunteer? 1977-2017 (40 years!) Why do you enjoy volunteering? I enjoy assisting all people in any way that I can; no matter the circumstances and I am a ‘people-person’! Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Over the years, I have been in many civic organizations including Meals on Wheels for 42 years; I tutored elementary school students for 9 years, and have been involved with an Alzheimer’s Association. I am very, very active and am always in my church. In my spare time I make quilts, paint pictures, and enjoy cooking for neighbors. I play bridge at least two times each month.

Home, Sweet Home is the New Normal for Cancer Patients
Community-based care makes cancer treatment easier on patients and families. A cancer diagnosis used to lead to prolonged stays at the hospital or travel to big metropolitan areas or large academic-affiliated institutions. Not anymore. More than 80 percent of all cancer treatment, including radiation and chemotherapy infusion, is now delivered at the community level in an outpatient setting. Even the most sophisticated treatments like proton therapy are becoming more accessible. Community-based clinics are providing advanced, comprehensive cancer treatment in the towns where people live and work. Texas Oncology, a pioneer in community-based cancer care, has 13 locations right here in East Texas, enabling patients to receive industry-leading treatment without leaving home and the critical support of family and friends. Local cancer clinics are especially important for radiation patients, who often have daily treatments for consecutive weeks at a time. The cost and stress of travel previously associated with cancer care was an additional heavy burden for patients and their families. It’s common for community-based cancer centers to also provide diagnostics, laboratory facilities, and pharmacies to make the entire treatment process more convenient for patients. For cancer patients, the benefits of community-based services are amplified due to intense cancer treatment regimens that take significant time and energy. Among the many advantages: •Staying close to the support of family, friends, and loved ones – and in some cases, work •Removing the feeling of isolation of being away from home •Eliminating the strenuous burden of traveling for frequent appointments to distant treatment facilities to receive quality care •Providing access to some of the most promising clinical trials in the country There is an impression that clinical trials are only available at large academic institutions. Patients of Texas Oncology take part in some of the most promising clinical trials in the nation for a broad range of cancers. Through an affiliation with US Oncology Research, Texas Oncology has played a pivotal role in the development of more than 65 FDA approved cancer therapies. Choosing the right physician and treatment options are top priorities for all patients who are in the fight of their lives. When patients weigh an oncology team’s experience and quality of care as they make their decision about where to receive treatment, they should also consider that they are developing a long-term relationship with this team. Choosing an oncologist in their own community can greatly increase the convenience and ease of care for patients in the long-term. For more information on community-based cancer care in your area, visit www.TexasOncology.com.

PAIN DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERMANENT
GLEN GRAVES, MD AND LUIS VASQUEZ, MD At Texas Arthritis & Rheumatology Specialists, we know first-hand the damage that arthritis can cause. Many types of arthritis including rheumatoid can affect patients of all ages. We treat other causes of pain too including bursitis, tendonitis and injuries. A Rheumatologist is an Internal Medicine specialist who treats the arthritis from the inside out. Did you know that joint and back pain is the most common reason patients see a doctor, according to a Mayo Clinic study? Autoimmune conditions occur when the immune system sends inflammation to areas of the body when it is not needed causing damage/symptoms. These diseases can also affect the eyes, skin, nervous system and internal organs. Common diseases treated by a rheumatologist include osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic back pain, tendinitis, and lupus. People often don’t realize that they can do things to help their pain. For instance, Harvard Medical School lists four ways exercise can help with arthritis. A moderate exercise program can give you: 1)a better range of motion, 2)stronger muscles, 3)better endurance and 4)better balance. Pain does not have to be a normal part of the aging process. People hurt for a reason, and we are the detectives who find that reason. Often times, we can stop the pain. We like to treat arthritis early to prevent long-term damage. We have treatments now that can dramatically alter the disease. People wait to see the doctor about their pain for many reasons. They think the pain will get better on its own. But that may not come. Others fear medications. But we have some relatively safe options to help arthritis and other pain disorders. Patients often assume it will be a hassle to arrange an appointment. We do our best to make the process smooth. A 10-minute phone call can often get you seen next week. If you have pain, don’t wait to get help. Start the process today to get relief.

Invisalign is the answer to correcting misaligned teeth without the use of conspicuous metal wires and brackets. Many patients want straighter smiles, but can’t imagine spending 18 to 24 months with traditional braces. For this reason, we may recommend Invisalign clear aligners so patients can straighten their teeth discreetly. Dr. Hutto is among the top five percent of Invisalign providers and has treated more than 500 patients with Invisalign clear aligners. Because Invisalign clear aligners are removable, you can still eat and drink whatever you want, and you’ll brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth. Plus, unlike metal braces, Invisalign plastic aligners won’t cause painful mouth abrasions. And because adjustments are unnecessary with Invisalign—you simply change aligners every one to two weeks — you won’t have to come in to see us as often. No impressions for Invisalign patients at Hutto orthodontics. Straight teeth, no braces, no impressions! We are the only orthodontic office in East Texas that has the revolutionary iTero Element digital scanner, which means no messy impressions. Invisalign Teen eliminates the embarrassment of both crooked teeth and metal braces in yearbook photos, prom pictures and Facebook profiles. With Invisalign Teen, we can give your teenager a beautiful smile without forcing him or her to be remembered as “the kid with the braces.” This revolutionary method straightens teeth using a series of clear, plastic aligners. Invisalign Teen aligners are removable and clear, so your teenager’s smile gradually becomes straighter without anyone knowing. Plus, eating habits don’t have to change, and normal brushing and flossing will maintain healthy gums and teeth. And without metal wires or brackets there are no painful mouth abrasions. Albert Lee, MD CHRISTUS TRINITY MOTHER FRANCES ROSS BREAST CENTER Supplemental Breast Cancer Screening Mammography has long been an excellent weapon in our fight against breast cancer. Regular screening with mammograms will detect many breast cancers at their earlier stages, resulting in a less invasive therapy and better survival outcome. It is a very effective, low-cost screening tool, and every woman over 40 should have one mammogram screening every year. As good as mammogram screenings are, they do not detect all breast cancers. In fact, mammogram screenings find 80-85-percent of breast cancers. In women with dense breasts (breast tissue looks mostly white on mammogram) abnormalities maybe obscured.

So, what can we do to improve our ability to detect more cancers? How about those women who have a strong family history of breast cancer and the routine mammogram is negative? Breast MRI and ultrasound offer supplemental options. For those women in the highest risk category, a breast MRI has shown to be extremely sensitive, detecting 95-percent of breast cancers. We recommend women who have a strong family history or significant lifetime risk of 20-percent or greater to consider an MRI in addition to a mammogram. Breast ultrasound has long been utilized as part of diagnostic workups, in patients with symptoms or in recall settings after a finding was detected during a routine mammogram screening. It is also very useful in women who have dense breasts in a screening setting as well. However, it does not replace mammography as the primary screening tool. At the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center, we help women determine their risk, based on the information we obtain from their routine mammogram. Based on that risk assessment and their breast density, we can help women decide whether a supplemental screening with MRI or ultrasound is recommended. B SC EN EM A G.COM

1 6 The answer to the question is that they ALL train at APEC. The truth is, that list is modest and it would take this entire article to name everyone. APEC, here in Tyler, Texas, gets contacted by athletes, coaches, and teams all over the world about training because of the track record they’ve produced locally in East Texas. APEC has recently been featured in/on ESPN, SI, Fox Sports, Bleacher Report, Stack, USA Today, and just about every news or sports outlet there is. The reason for all this notoriety is not just because their athletes are doing amazing things, it is because they are doing things critics believe to be impossible. Simply put, they are improving and getting results at an unprecedented level in virtually every sport on every level. Last year alone, APEC coaches were asked to speak at four universities and NIKE world headquarters on APEC training systems. APEC coaches were recently invited to observe workouts from several olympic athletes and world record holders, where they participated in round table discussions with sport scientist/ coaches from Canada, Australia, Germany, UK, NBA, and NFL. In short, APEC is putting Tyler and East Texas on the map as one of the top authorities for training on a global scale. With over 68 post graduate degree certifications, in everything from speed development to
No. 30 BSC ENE
5 advanced treatment and therapy techniques, APEC has set itself apart from the competition by the relentless pursuit of knowledge and staying ahead of the curve from a technology and scientific standpoint. Even with the education, as well as the notoriety and success of these high level athletes, APEC maintains its focus on the heart of their mission, which is the youth athlete (K-12th grade). APEC measures their true level of success by transforming our youth athletes into confident young men and women that can utilize their experience with APEC as a platform for all facets of life. “APEC exists to educate and improve lives through human performance. We believe that everyone has an untapped level of greatness that we can bring to realization,” says APEC founder, Bobby Stroupe. “There is no greater impact that we can have than on youth athletes. Youth athletes will always be the main focus for APEC. They are making their own reality right now with their thought processes and body formation. They need to know what they are truly capable of. Most kids put too many limits on themselves. We want to destroy limits and teach kids that they are better than what they picture themselves to be. It’s not about being a pro athlete, that only validates our training processes for us. It’s about these kids learning
7 the right type of confidence and doing it in a way that builds and protects their future athleticism AND their life approach.” APEC carefully divides its youth training systems by what Stroupe says is based on field tested and research based principles of long term athletic development. A lot of time, money and research goes into making sure the kindergarten athletes are doing the appropriate movements for their stage of development, which is very different than the 3rd graders, middle school and high school athletes. “The biggest challenge is that parents think the kids are behind if they don’t play a sport all the time. Youth athletes NEED seasons of development to improve in any sport. That means getting away from games to focus on certain skills while developing the body for that sport,” says Stroupe. APEC also has several blogs on their website as a resource for parents on a variety of topics ranging from which shoes your child should wear to sport specificity. The question for East Texas isn’t IF we have a place for athletes of all ages and levels to get world class training, it’s will you take advantage of it. Stroupe stresses, “It’s not about being the best because that is out of your control. Instead, BE THE BEST. YOU!” B SC EN EM A G.COM
Kyle Lopez Knee replacement success story
“I was walking on my own in a week. No walker. No cane.” Years of athletics had taken a major toll on Kyle’s knees. He had one replaced in January of 2014. He had the second one replaced in October, with the knee replacement program at Longview Regional Medical Center. “The experience was amazing,” said Kyle. “The new pain medication allowed me to get up and walk just two hours after surgery without feeling groggy. They prepared me well, and taught my wife how to be my coach. People think they have to go to Dallas to get their surgeries done. But I’m telling them we have a great program right here in Longview. They did an excellent job!” For more information on The Center for Joint Restoration, visit LongviewRegional.com. Or, to register for our next free orthopedic seminar, call 903-233-4770.

The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Cosmetic Surgery Center was established to provide patients with both the art and science of plastic surgery throughout Northeast Texas. Under the care and direction of surgeons Laura E. O’Halloran, M.D., and James D. Saar, M.D., the Center specializes in plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and skin care. Not only do patients benefit from many years of surgical training and experience, they also have confidence that they will receive exceptional surgical care. The goal of the Cosmetic Surgery Center is to offer every patient individualized and professional attention before, during and after surgery. Both Drs. O’Halloran and Saar have excellent reputations for achieving natural appearances for their patients. As an attending physician for the Center, Dr. O’Halloran is devoted to patient education, enabling each patient to make informed decisions regarding their care. The entire staff is committed to the individual needs of each patient and works diligently to ensure a pleasant experience – from the initial consultation through the end of the recovery period. Dr. Saar serves as director of the Center and as Chief of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic Plastic Surgery. Recognized for their efforts in patient education, both Drs. O’Halloran and Saar have chosen a team of dedicated and caring professionals to ensure each patient receives individualized attention. Both Drs. O’Halloran and Saar are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Their many years of surgical training and experience allows them to provide quality surgical care for their patients. At the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Cosmetic Surgery Center, some patients seek to correct an abnormal condition, known as reconstructive surgery; others seek to subtly improve their overall look, known as cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, which can be caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary.

Most patients will require assistance for the first two days, post-surgery. Afterward, most patients are able to care for themselves but may still need assistance if they care for small children. The time it may take a patient to resume regular exercises also varies based on the procedure performed. All patients are encouraged to start a slow walking routine on the second postoperative day. Regular aerobic and more vigorous activities are not allowed during the first two weeks in order to decrease the risks of bleeding, swelling and bruising. Weight lifting and contact sports are allowed at one month, in most cases. Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. O’Halloran and Dr. Saar meet with patients during an initial consultation to address any questions and concerns they may have. They will then offer recommendations and advice based on each patient’s specific goals. Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance because it is elective. There are a number of “gray areas” in coverage for plastic surgery that sometimes require special consideration by an insurance carrier. These usually involve surgical operations that may be viewed as reconstructive or cosmetic, depending on each patient’s situation. For example, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) – a procedure normally performed to achieve cosmetic improvement – may be covered if the eyelids are drooping severely and obscuring a patient’s vision. The Cosmetic Surgery Center performs cosmetic and reconstructive

COMPLETE CARE Get in. Get out. Get back to life.
Tyler Complete Care, a freestanding emergency medical center on Capital Drive, was formed earlier this year as part of a merger between Tyler Urgent Care and nationally known Complete Care. “It’s the best of both worlds with local ER doctors, combined with the administrative experience of a larger company,” Dr. Brad Robertson said. Robertson and Dr. Bill Wallace opened Tyler Urgent Care in 2007. Dr. Jeff Leach joined them in 2013. Drs. Mark McDonald and James Ryman round out the five full time physicians, along with Nurse Practitioner Stacy Gregory. Since opening Tyler Complete Care at the beginning of this year, the team also welcomed another location recently. Tyler residents are likely aware of Momentum Urgent Care on Troup Highway behind Whataburger. Now Momentum Urgent Care offers both Urgent Care and 24 hour ER services. Housing both urgent care and emergency care takes the guess work on where you need to go when you have a medical concern. Tyler residents have the option to visit both locations.
No. 34 BSC ENE
If there are any two physicians who work well together in the same space, it is Drs. Wallace and Robertson. They have been practicing medicine since their days together back in medical school. “We both go back a long way. We met the first day of medical school. We have been working together ever since, for over 30 years,” Wallace remembered. “We came here (to Tyler) in 1992 and 1993, one year apart. We both worked in the ER at Mother Frances for about 15 years.” At Tyler Complete Care, the atmosphere is unlike typical ERs. Initially, a patient may find that the look itself is more comparable to that of a family practice. “We are trying to hit the best of both worlds with expanding the capabilities here as far as the 24 hour ER goes, but have a more relaxed atmosphere,” Wallace said. But it is still an emergency center and the physicians don’t provide long-term care. If you are having to visit the location, they will be happy to refer you back to your physician with any information obtained at Tyler Complete Care. If a patient doesn’t have a physician, the team at Tyler Complete Care will help the patient establish one in town.
Due to the set-up of the facility, the process of getting seen is fairly fast. With 36 employees and 8 physicians, all ranging from part-time and full-time, patients are evaluated within minutes, depending on if the issue is minor or major. “An EKG is done within 10 minutes. Their total stay depends on their diagnosis and treatment,” Robertson shared. And then there is the comparison of costs. “What sets us apart is that we are both very cost conscious. We set our charges at an affordable and fair rate. We pride ourselves in being transparent with our billing practices and know that our patients appreciate the fact that there will be no surprise bills in their mailboxes down the road,” Wallace said. “The three biggest (factors) are convenience, cost awareness and, at the end of the day, the Bill and Brad factor. We’ve been here for 24 years. A lot of the people in the community and most of the physicians knows us,” Wallace shared. “We’ve invested a lot of time and effort in both patient care and trying to be an asset to our community,” Robertson concluded. What I Did on My SummER Vacation Summer will soon be here. It’s that time when we pack up family and friends and head to parks, bike trails, woods, beaches, barbeques and sometimes, the Emergency Room…ouch! Excel ER, conveniently located in Tyler, Longview, Nacogdoches and Texarkana, wants to make your summer a safer one and offers these “hot” tips to protect yourself and the ones you love. Respect The Sun – Reduce sun exposure when UV rays are strongest (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Make Fashion Sense – Wear loose-fitting clothing and broad-brimmed hats; and apply and re-apply sunscreen (SPF 15+) whenever you’re outdoors. Drink Plenty of H20 – Staying hydrated, along with seeking shade and taking breaks from intense activity, can help prevent heat stroke. Auto-matic Safety – Never, ever leave infants, children or an elderly person who’s frail in a parked car. Killing temperatures in a car can soar in mere moments. Bug Out – Insect bites and stings can result in itching, severe allergic reactions or worse. Dress appropriately for the environment and if prescribed, keep an epinephrine auto-injector on hand for serious allergies. Be Hard-Headed – Wearing a bike helmet and protective gear is smart at any age. Reflective stickers are also a bright idea. Get Expert Emergency Care – Even with the best of intentions and precautions, accidents can still happen, from falling off a bike to a scorching burn from the backyard barbeque. Should you experience an emergency or severe injury this summer, depend on the boardcertified physicians and nurses at Excel ER. Your care will be fast-tracked within moments of coming through the doors. Plus, Excel ER provides specialized exam rooms for adults and children; a certified, in-house laboratory; and advanced digital imaging and radiology, including CAT scans. Average risk of developing breast cancer is around 13 percent over the course of a woman’s life. High risk is any woman with a 20 percent or greater lifetime risk. This number is calculated at the ETMC Breast Care Center, and explained to those women who appear to be high risk or have certain risk factors. Factors in a personal history that elevate risk include first or second degree relatives with breast cancer, late child bearing (or no-term pregnancies), mammographically dense breast tissue, hormone usage and the length of time between the start of menses and the time of menopause. These mostly relate to lifetime exposure to estrogen produced by the ovaries. By tailoring the screening to the individual woman’s risk level for developing breast cancer, we can heighten surveillance in those who need extra attention. We know that early detection of breast cancer reduces cancer deaths and reduces the severity of therapy needed to treat the cancer. The most effective, proven screening tool remains the mammogram. It is most effective when obtained annually in every woman over the age of 40. A common misperception is that a mammogram is needed every other year. This really defeats the power of the screening study, as the most beneficial interval is a 12-month ‘snapshot’ of the breast tissue. This allows us the opportunity to catch something new, small and invariably treatable. To schedule a mammogram, call 866-333-3862 and press 3. etmc.org/breast-care

abdominal aortic aneurysm What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and why should you be screened? An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlarged area in the lower part of the aorta, the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the entire body. The aorta, about the thickness of a garden hose, is the body’s main supplier of blood, and a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause lifethreatening bleeding. Although AAAs often grow slowly and usually without symptoms, accurate predictions of how fast they will enlarge is difficult. Therefore your vascular surgeon will closely monitor your AAA so that surgery can be planned if it is necessary, avoiding emergency surgical repair, which can be risky. Ninety percent of patients don’t survive AAA rupture, which is the #13 cause of death in the United States, yet when an abdominal aortic aneurysm is repaired electively, risk of death is less than 4%. AAAs are relatively common but patients at greatest risk are men who are older than 65 years and have peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease (PAD). Anyone age 60 and older who has risk factors for developing an AAA, such as smoking or a family history of AAA, should consider regular screening for the condition. Because being male and smoking significantly increases the risk, men ages 65 to 75 who have ever smoked any cigarettes should have a one-time screening for AAA with an abdominal ultrasound. This one time AAA screening is a benefit of our government’s Medicare program and with the proper referral from the patient’s primary physician, it is a free service to Medicare beneficiaries. Dr. Mark Robbins and Dr. Tyrone Miller are exceptionally trained Vascular Surgeons who specialize in the management and repair of AAAs. BRIDGING THE FITNESS GAP It is estimated that 80% of people who join a fitness center will quit within five months. In addition, 4 out of 5 active memberships will go unused each month. The reasons for attrition are numerous and range from lack of time, lack of motivation, and stale fitness offerings. Balance, a downtown fitness center, operated by Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, is challenging these common objections. By individualizing every workout, Balance is able to offer a personal training atmosphere to their group training clients. Class sizes are kept small and instructors cater to each client, bringing an added level of safety and results not found in other group training settings. Clients at Balance are given a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) which allows instructors to discover the best possible way to train each individual. After the screening process is completed, the information is shared amongst the entire staff so all instructors and the Dietitian are on the same page. The staff at Balance encourages clients to utilize Pilates in addition to their weight training routines. This allows their bodies to become stronger while also retaining mobility and maintaining proper movement patterns. By focusing on core stability and improving posture, Pilates has been found to correct multiple issues. In collaboration with their partners at Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, Balance has created a pre and post-surgical Pilates program which helps clients speed up the recovery process. By focusing on the strength and mobility surrounding a painful joint, Pilates prepares the area for surgery without the pain and risk caused by weight-bearing exercise. After the surgery, patients have been shown to progress through physical therapy quicker when they have participated in the pre-surgery Pilates program. Balance is one of the only facilities in the Tyler area to employ a fulltime Registered Dietitian. Kelly Gill, R.D.N., provides clients with one-on-one consultations as well as ongoing accountability contact. “Whether it is finding something quick and easy to eat for someone who skips breakfast or helping someone who needs to gain control of their late-night snacking, I assist clients in finding lasting ways to make improvements”, said Gill. Gill focuses on a balanced approach

to nutrition. Gill adds, “Contrary to what you might think, I don’t expect people to eat only vegetables and organic foods. I live in the real world too.” Tanya Engel is someone who has seen tremendous benefits from the fitness and nutrition approach offered by Balance. Engel, a breast cancer survivor, enrolled in group fitness classes at Balance after experiencing a significant personal setback and a subsequent diagnosis of osteoporosis. “Last summer I went through a very unexpected personal loss and ended up losing almost 20 pounds which left me very unhealthy and weak. I couldn’t eat, my body and joints always ached, I had trouble sleeping and I was on an emotional roller coaster. I knew that I needed to find new activities to fill the void in my life plus work on my physical and emotional health so I decided to give it (Balance) a try.” To date, each follow-up visit with Gill has shown increases in Engel’s muscle mass and basal metabolic rate. In addition, by adding dietary calcium, combined with weight bearing exercise, Engel has been able to avoid medications for osteoporosis. “I feel great! I have put on some of the weight that I lost. I no longer have any joint pain. I find that my posture is so much better. I can pick up and hold my grandchildren and toss them in the air over and over and previously had not been able to do that. My emotional state as well as my physical state is so much better,” Engel explains. Another client, Carmen Edwards, compliments the Balance staff on assisting her to make noticeable improvements in her overall health. Diligent attendance in group fitness classes has produced a therapeutic drop in her blood pressure. By adding some of the nutrition tips she learned from Gill, Edwards hopes to eventually be able to stop taking her blood pressure medications. She is pleased with the results from group fitness alone, reporting improved sleep and boosted energy. “I’m not sluggish anymore,” said Edwards, “and I don’t get winded when I climb the stairs.” Balance offers a unique blend of personalization and affordability. By combining scientifically backed methods from the fitness world with an on-staff Registered Dietitian, Balance gives locals a fresh, new way of reclaiming their health and fitness. Summer
Article By: Amanda Thibodeaux Kosmer
Once upon a time, in a land on the other side of the Sabine River, there was a blueberry farm. On this blueberry farm lived a farmer and his wife and their three children. In the hot summer months of May, June and July, when the sun was in its full glory, the family would harvest their blueberry crop. The land became alive as the family of five worked together picking and packaging blueberries for many years. As time went by, the children grew up, married and moved far, far away from the blueberry field. Soon, the two acres that were once a field of berries turned into land full of the laughter of grandchildren as they played in this wide open space. The blueberry field became alive once more and they all lived happily ever after.
The End.

This is a true story. Maybe a little idealized, but true nonetheless. My husband is the youngest child in this story and he refuses to touch a blueberry to this day. In fact, our wedding was planned around blueberry season and my ideal wedding date of May was pushed back to end of a smoldering July…blame it on those stinkin’ blueberries! No matter my husband’s feelings about blueberries, this little berry supports many families in the East Texas area where they thrive in the low soil pH in the East Texas vicinity. You can find fresh blueberries growing in fields from Edom to Lindale to Nacogdoches and many more locations across this area. On June 10th, the city of Nacogdoches celebrates their 28th Annual Blueberry Festival. The festival website describes the event: “The Texas Blueberry Festival is a delightful day of the America you dreamed still existed. This is the most delicious festival in the Lone Star State— a day-long celebration of the annual blueberry harvest. As the only state-sanctioned blueberry festival in Texas, this delicious annual event attracts more than 19,000 people to downtown Nacogdoches. It offers a smorgasbord of activities to keep folks entertained all day long.” A few of the activities on board this year are a pie eating contest, 5K Run/Walk, a cupcake battle, a kids’ obstacle course and splash/bounce center as well as live entertainment and, of course, blueberries! You can visit TexasBlueberryFestival.com for a full list of activities.
When I think of blueberries, I immediately envision my mother-inlaw’s fresh out of the oven muffins over -flowing with melting butter and juicy bursts of blueberries. These little berries are incorporated into a variety of recipes and for good reason. Not only do they taste delicious (to most people and not so much to those who grew up on a blueberry farm); blueberries are considered a “superfood”. One serving contains almost 25% of our dietary requirement of Vitamin C that helps in collagen production, promotes healthy gums and capillaries, and aids in immune support. Blueberries are also low in fat, high in fiber as well as manganese that supports healthy bone development. The Blueberry Council is currently researching the ways in which blueberries aid in cardiovascular health, brain health, insulin response, and cancer research. This summer, indulge in your favorite blueberry recipe and receive the hearty impact these berries can have on your health. I am sharing my mother-in-law’s most coveted blueberry muffin recipe, an all- time favorite recipe from Cookin’ Up the Blues (find them at the Texas Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches) and a refreshing adult beverage from Kawa’s Hibachi Grill & Lounge:
Blueberry Muffins By: Paula Kosmer

Fill pans 2/3 full and bake 20 to 25 minutes at 400 degrees.
Simple Face Mask Recipe Featuring Blueberries By: Natural Wellness
Blend all ingredients until smooth. The lemon juice can dry out acne, soften skin, get rid of blackheads, even skin tone and help protect against the sun. Yogurt helps clear damaged skin. Clean face and leave on 10-20 minutes and then rinse face. Can keep for one week in refrigerator.

Rustic Blueberry & Brie Puff By: Cookin’ Up the Blues 1 sheet frozen puff pastry 1 wheel Brie 2 eggs, beaten 1 pint blueberries ¼ cup sugar
1. Combine blueberries and sugar in small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until sugar melts and blueberries are hot. Turn down heat and continue to cook for an additional 10 minutes. 2. Remove from heat and allow to cool. 3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, 4. Defrost 1 sheet of puff pastry for approximately 15 to 20 minutes and unfold. 5. Gently roll pastry with a rolling pin to flatten and elongate. 6. *Hint: Remove the top film on Brie so that the blueberries have a chance to melt into it. 7. Center the wheel of Brie on top of the pastry sheet. Top with cooled compote. 8. Bring all four corners of the sheet together above Brie and twist slightly to form a “bundle”. Tie gathered pastry with kitchen/cooking string. 9. Brush with egg. 10. Place bundle on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until pastry is golden brown.

Add the oil and continue whipping. 3. Add the sugar, blueberries, sage and mix well. 4. Finally add the essential oils. 5. Pour in pretty jars.

6. This will last a few days in the fridge. 7. Always take care of using a clean spoon to scoop the scrub so you don’t contaminate it. 8. Sit in your bathtub and scrub your body once a week. 9. Rinse well. Take care of not slipping as the oil can make your tub slippery. 10. To wash your tub, use hot water and a natural cleaning agent.

DIY Tie-Dyeing Technique By: Oh the Lovely Things Blog
- Cotton 100% natural and white) - Salt - Large pot - Two buckets - Blueberries
Step 1: Prepare your fabric 1. Pre-wash your fabric. 2. Place your fabric in a large pot. Add enough water to fully cover the fabric, and add salt at a 1:16 ratio (for example, one cup of salt for 16 cups of water). 3. Bring up to boil, then simmer for about one hour. The salt acts as a fixative for the dye. 4. Rinse the fabric in cold water and set it aside. 5. To tie- dye, tightly wrap rubber bands wherever you want to create a design. Check out the blog site once again for a chart that shows several folding and tying techniques.
Step 2: Dye bath: Blueberries 1. Put 5 cups blueberries in a large pot. Add water at a 2:1 ratio. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about an hour. 2. Strain out water, discard blueberries, and return blueberry water to pot. 3. Add the fabric in the pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about an hour or two (depending on how dark you would like the dyed fabric to be). If you want the deepest possible color, turn off the heat and let the fabric sit in the pot overnight. 4. Remove the fabric, rinse it well (until the water runs clean and no more dye comes out), and let it air dry. 5. Use cold water the first few times you wash your new tie-dyed shirt! And voila! Your kiddos will have a groovy new shirt they can proudly say they dyed with blueberries!
The story about the blueberry farm just across the Sabine River is not unlike many tales of other blueberry picker children. Harvesting blueberries is hard work so no wonder my husband stays far away from these super berries. Others, though, who have not spent their summer days on a blueberry farm, enjoy the tastiness, health benefits, and many fun activities blueberries provide. Here’s wishing you a Berry Sweet Summer and a final “The End” to our blueberry story.

MAN ABOUT
TOWN
With: Dr. Aubrey D. Sharpe Photos By: Bryan Stewart
The “Man” always goes to the Annual Taste of Tyler Party. It goes back to the leadership days of Danny Case and Jerry Bower and continues “even unto this hour” with Bob Westbrook and Roger Lumley. These good men have taken good care of me…and this year was no exception. The Taste of Tyler throws its big bash each spring at Harvey Convention Center and it is always a hoot! More good food than ought to be legal, a huge array of beers, wines, and cool drinks, great music in a festive atmosphere and a first class culinary competition of our local high school students, which is judged by professional chefs. This year 36 restaurants participated to provide a taste of their finest cuisine. It is a whale of a bargain in that for a meager $25 ticket you sample the best of the best all night long without paying full price. Figure it out: $25 divided by 36 restaurants is about .69 a sample…and these are big samples, my friends. And guess what, all of the beers and wine are free using that formula. I’m a-tellin’ you, for about the price of two uncooked 8oz. choice fillets of beef tenderloin, you can eat and drink fine fare with super entertainment for three hours. But, there is a deeper and more meaningful motive behind this party of all parties. This citywide event raises money, through ticket sales, to support ProStart, a high school culinary education program across Northeast Texas. The program provides students with opportunities to learn the art of cooking and managing restaurants through a classroom environment. It, also, creates pathways to earning college credits while still attending high school. So, the highlight of the event is a wellorchestrated high school culinary competition expertly operated under the Texas Chefs Association Rules of Competition. Each team of two students was given a protein, which was pork shoulder; a budget of $14 and must
prepare a meal for four which must be completed in one hour (students choose the sides). They are graded on 1) best presentation of the protein and sides 2) most creative plating and 3) flavor. These kids hit it out of the park. The high school student teams were from the ProStart Programs at Chapel Hill, Tyler ISD Career Technical Education Center, Lindale ISD, and Whitehouse ISD. The 1st place winner was Chapel Hill with a $300 prize to their program. The 2nd place winner was Tyler ISD-CTE for a prize of $200 to their program. The remaining three teams received $100 each for their school’s program. This outstanding ProStart Program is based on a curriculum prepared and approved by the Texas Restaurant Association, National Restaurant Association and the American Chefs Association. It is college level work adapted to high school students. These students get first class training and do first class work, as all five of the teams demonstrated in this competition. The “Man’s” dear friend, Shelbie Glover, Executive Director of the Lindale Area Chamber of Commerce, won the four free tickets to the Taste from the BSCENE Magazine contest. So, she and three of her friends along with, BSCENE’s Tara Johnson and Bryan Stewart, were my party. Wow, what a party we had eating and drinking and drinking and eating throughout the night. Our rest spots were enjoying the music of Faber and Friends and the TJC Jazz Ensemble and both were fantastic. When he was not “tending to business” my buddy, Bob Westbrook, tagged along and kept the party lively. Well now, hope you get the picture. The Taste of Tyler is an annual “not to miss event” to add to your “must do for fun and a good cause” list every year. So, if you’re out and about, look for us, we’ll be about town.

When I was a teenager, my mom used to tell me never to start plucking my eyebrows because “Once you start, you won’t be able to stop.” But then the ‘90s came and the trend was thin brows with nude matte lips. I wanted to rock the look, and before I knew it, the wax strips were gently applied to my naturally-thick-peeper-frames in one second . . . and ripped off the next! Twenty years later, the upkeep from that waxing means my Tweezerman never leaves my side.
Get Some "WOWS" For Those BROWS with Josh Tankersley @texasbrowguy
Article By: Veronica Terres, Editor-in-Chic Courtesy Photos
To help us figure out the best way to maintain your brows, not just for today, but for years to come, I sought out answers from licensed esthetician Josh Tankersley, who is locally known as “The Brow Guy.” What is the most common problem you address when a client comes in for some brow help? The most common problem I address is that a client feels he or she doesn’t even have any brows or that they feel you can't see them. Quality brow tint, done correctly, fixes this problem in less than five minutes. What’s the number one “no-no” in brow shaping? My number one "no-no" is to attempt to do your own brows, because usually my clients will have no success. Doing your own brows is unseemly to me ... kind of like doing your own highlights. You just don't do it. What if it’s too late and plucking is already part of your regular brow routine. What brand of tweezers do you recommend to help get the job done? The best readily available tweezers are made by Tweezerman. I prefer one with a pointed tip.

Is there a brow shape that works on everyone or that everyone should try? There is no one brow shape that works for everyone or that they should try. My goal is to alter or completely change a person’s facial expression making a clean coherent shape. Is there a brow shape that everyone should avoid? The brow shape people should all avoid is the brow that looks like a comma. It's super thick in the middle and pencil thin on the end. This shape is a distraction. Brows should blend well and go with the face, not dominate the face. What are the best products to use on your brows for shaping? I almost 100% use Anastasia Beverly Hills products. I use her stencils and her products for mapping a brow. She has good powders, pomades, and tinted brow gels.
What are the best brow tools of the trade that every “IT” girl or guy, should have in their cosmetic arsenal? I think drawing brows directly on the skin with powders or pencils is not for everyone, however, I'm very partial to Anastasia's tinted quick drying brow gel. I feel most girls love how quick it is and how it doesn't touch the skin, but rather coats the brow while holding the hairs nicely in place.
What should every guy or gal know about brow maintenance and shaping? Everyone needs to know that “Brow Awareness” has arrived. We are now more than ever aware that a good brow shaping, done well, is a game changer. MAY |JUNE 2017

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO A PEACEFUL LIFE
We can all agree that: Life is not fair, happiness is not guaranteed, and stress is inevitable. Life is no doubt, at times going to throw us many curveballs and it is up to us to choose how to deal with it. With life’s challenges, stress which is usually accompanied by anxiety may be unavoidable, yet it is manageable. Most importantly, we cannot let our worries and our stress crowd out our peace and happiness and the simple pleasures of life.
• Own your feelings. No one can make you happy, no one can make you sad or mad. These are all feelings we each individually choose. • Don’t overthink it. Most of the things we worry about never happen. Worrying will not stop bad things from happening; it will only interfere with your journey. • Do your best. At the end of the day, feel good about what you did accomplish today instead of dwelling on what you didn’t. • Live in the moment. The past is done, we never know what tomorrow holds, focus on today. • Do not be afraid. “Do not be afraid” is written in the Bible 365 times. This is a daily reminder from God to live everyday fearless. • Take action. Identify your problems and take steps to solve them. • Put yourself on the list. Take care of yourself. Exercise and eat healthy. Making yourself a priority is not selfish, as it will make you a better spouse, mother or father, son or daughter, employee or boss and a better friend. • Lift up others. Be an encouraging and a positive influence on your friends and family. Make people feel good about themselves. • Count your blessings. Be grateful. Cherish all the blessings in your life. Take comfort in what you do have and reject all envy for what you don’t • Find your self-worth from within. Seeking your self-worth from this world will only lead to disappointment. BS CENEMAG. COM
• Embrace the silence. Practice daily prayer and meditation. Try yoga. • Be financially responsible. Live within your means. Avoid debt. • Have something to look forward to. Plan a trip. Plan a party. Make a date with a friend. • Enjoy your family. Take the time to play with the kids, talk to your family and care for your elderly. • Avoid negativity. Stay positive in your thoughts and in your conversations. • Find your passion. Take up a new hobby. Do things you love. • You can’t save the world. Avoid today’s 24-hour news cycle. • Turn off the TV. Limit your exposure to back-stabbing, trash talking and unkind programming disguised as entertainment. • Open your mind. Learn a new skill or a new language. Seek enlightenment. • Tell the truth. (no further explanation needed!) • Have a pet. Just one loving stroke to a sweet animal can immediately lower stress levels and warm our hearts. • Stop and smell the roses. Go outside. Feel the sun. Hear the birds. • Take one step at a time. Any big task, break it down into small steps.
