This month's cover is a touchstone for me and our family, both at home and in the office. We're incredibly proud to have the chance to sit down and talk with country music star and headliner at this year's Tyler Cattle Barons' Gala, Craig Morgan, and let him tell his story. He's spent his life behind the scenes as well as in the spotlight. He's got a very personal take on the mission of the American Cancer Society and the Tyler Cattle Barons' Gala. Every year, around this time, I get a bittersweet feeling; and it's always the Cattle Barons' Gala that brings it up. I am reminded of years gone by: of friends, relatives and all the great times we had gathering together to “do it up” country style on ranches across East Texas. One year I had a dream come true as a lifelong Houston Astro's fan, and had my photo taken with player Jeff Bagwell and a few friends at the casino tent. Another time, I remember piling about 20 people into a limo and riding the range with a little more flair. And there are so many stories and memories to choose from than just these. There were great musical performances, dancing, drinks and a lot of fun times in the gaming tent! All in all, I've had some amazing experiences, and I hope these memories don't fade away any time soon. However, there are other thoughts that come to mind with the Cattle Barons' Gala – and while they aren't always happy ones, they are certainly the reason why everyone involved does what they can (and probably more) each year. I remember finding out about the diagnosis of a coworker, who eventually lost his battle; my mom, who has survived cancer three times; and the journey numerous other friends and family members all took while fighting cancer. Most recently, another member of our team lost his mother to the disease. Just like almost everyone I know, I've lost people close to me and I've also seen some recover and go on to live amazing lives. Every year

I'm encouraged by the efforts of East Texans that support the American Cancer Society through their donation of time, efforts and dollars at the Cattle Barons' Gala. Seeing how much goes into this event is mindblowing and truly inspirational. You don't have formal training? It doesn't matter! The ACS can use you! All that matters is that you're committed to the cause, and that you're committed to doing everything you can – from selling tickets, to carrying folding chairs, to holding a clipboard – all to raise awareness in our community. This year's Gala promises to be something truly special. Everyone at BSCENE is just as excited to attend and take part as we know you are. The event will be held at the Rio Neches Ranch, working ranch and home of Dawn and Harry Leatherwood. They've hosted a few galas through the years, and I'm amazed every time at how stunningly beautiful that piece of land is. There are all the recurring events we've come to know and love: from the casino to the great food, the specialty drinks and amazing live and silent auction items. And, who can forget the air-conditioned tents! We couldn't be more excited for you to take part in this year's event, and to get to know the headliner a little better through BSCENE. But, if you happen to be out-of-town for the 2013 Gala, don't worry, there are always things going on at BSCENEMAG.COM, almost every day of the month. While you're at it, be sure to find us on Facebook and Twitter – we've got everything from online exclusives to content you won't find anywhere else.

BS CENE

This month, BSCENE Magazine is something special. Well, to be fair, we always think it's something special. We pour time, energy and passion into every issue we produce. So, it's fair to say that the June issue of BSCENE is perhaps the next special issue of BSCENE. For June, we have some amazing things in store for you, and we can't wait for you to dive in. From fitness to fashion, from food to fine art, BSCENE's articles cover an incredibly wide range of topics – especially in June. June is a great time of the year. Theoretically, it's not quite so scalding hot outside yet, and you can spend a bit of time outdoors without being forced to jump into the nearest pond, lake or swimming pool. With the kids out of school and the days growing longer, we all have the itch to get out of our routines and go do something. Sometimes, that can take a turn for the worse (just ask the passengers of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship). When you're out and about on vacation, things don't always go as planned. Your body encounters all kinds of new environments and settings, and they don't always make you feel as relaxed as you'd like. We've thought a little ahead for you and consulted with local medical experts to find the best ways to deal with the common travel sicknesses you might encounter on your journeys. Of course, we don't want anyone getting sick, ever; but it's always good to prepare in the event things do take a turn for the worse. After the episodes with the Carnival cruise, I can't exactly blame you if you don't want to stray too far from home. Besides, with the info and products in this issue's At Home story, you can turn your outdoor living area into a vacation itself. From stateof-the-art grills and outdoor, imitation brick ovens; to fabrics that can withstand a hurricane or blinding sun; the merchants of East Texas have just what you're looking for – and a few things you didn't even know you needed! All it takes is a little planning and preparation to install an outdoor living area full of luxury, fit for a king and queen. Whenever we're planning for an issue, we all have our favorite parts of the magazine. Noel loves anything related to the outdoors, Holly gets stuck on the style

section, Todd is obsessed with technology and I like to dig into the Cook Well section. This issue, we've got a treat for you – if you'll pardon the pun. The Man About Town, Dr. Aubrey Sharpe, got a chance to check out one of Tyler's newest food destinations. But it's not what you think, because the destination can be anywhere! Catering Tyler offers food from The Diner, Popeye's and Eli's Subs. Some of that I've tried before (I'm a loyal devotee of Popeye's biscuits), and some I've yet to try (but who doesn't love great sub sandwiches?) And it's all done so well! Perhaps they do such a good job because, for them, it's more than a “job.” It's a passion. Confucious said, “Find a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.” It's an often-quoted statement that still holds true. It's the idea that lead Lisa Horlander to her job. This artist used to get razzed for drawing on things as a child, but now has parlayed that panache into a successful endeavor turning TOMS shoes into individualized canvases for her works of art. There's a lot of soul in her soles, so to speak. (Man, I'm on fire with the puns this issue!) Regardless of which part of BSCENE Magazine is your favorite: At Home, Cook Well, Style File; there really is something here for everyone. There's always something new to read, some fresh bit of helpful information we can pass along or a inspiring story of an East Texan making a difference here. BSCENE Magazine is a mirror for the people of our community who do and give so much. So maybe this issue isn't any more special than the rest, but you – our readers – certainly are.

SOCIAL EDITOR HOLLY HEAD

hhead@bscenemag.com When the months heat up, so do events in East Texas. BSCENE is a social magazine and is always out in full force at the biggest and best events with photographers, video cameras and employees in attendance. We document the experience so our many readers can relive the fun and see who was there and what they missed if they weren't there in person. From the beginning, event photos and coverage have been the “bread and butter” of BSCENE. For June, there are countless event photos to peruse and pore over. The month kicked-off with our cover unveil at Spinout in the Swann's Plaza. Their new store is picturesque, vibrant and colorful. It will put any customer in the mood to shop right away! East Texans also had another shopping opportunity at the Cavender's Kickoff Party for the Tyler Cattle Barons Gala. Guests enjoyed shopping with live music and refreshments. Cavender's also generously donated a portion of the night's sales to the American Cancer Society. May was a big month for Komen Tyler. Bergfeld Park hosted Tyler's official Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure. Survivors set to “pink out” the event with support! Another active organization in the area is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Local Maci Drewy and her friend, Disney Channel's Davis Cleveland, even graced our cover back in 2011 to promote CF awareness. The Foundation continues to make strides and hosted the annual 65 Roses Gala in May, featuring headliner Casey Rivers. If you love country stars, it doesn't get better than headliner of the Longview Cattle Barons' Ball, Dustin Lynch! From “Cowboys and Angels” to “She Cranks My Tractor,” he sang his hits and some country standards at the April ball. We even snagged an exclusive interview with Dustin for BSCENE TV! The Magazine was both excited and honored to be a media sponsor for the American Cancer Society at the Longview event. The night was a blast, and all for such a worthy cause. However, a picture is worth a thousand words. So be sure to flip to the event photos and see for yourself! Until next event,

ll too often, and always unfortunately, the story of cancer is a personal one. Who among us hasn’t been affected by this terrible disease? We all have accounts of friends, family members, coworkers and more who have fought, won or lost their battle with cancer. There are stories of trials and triumph, of overcoming long odds and unexpected loss. These stories bring tears of sadness and tears of joy in equal measure. Some are a powerful examples of stamina and courage, while others are cautionary tales or testaments of lives lived to the fullest. Regardless of the outcome, no matter the individual, these stories are what continue to drive us – the friends, relatives, nieces, sons, fathers, all of us – to fight on. These stories need to be retold, to keep alive a history of fearlessness, sadness, victory and perseverance.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL

This year, country music star Craig Morgan will be headlining the Tyler Cattle Barons' Gala, thanks to American State Bank. It’s something they’ve helped to make possible, but it's certainly not the first time they’ve assisted within the community. “ASB has had a strong connection to the community for over 100 years,” said Chairman of the Board and owner, Brandon Steele. “Starting with our first location in Arp, we have been known as the ‘Community Bank.’ Our dedication to the communities in which we serve has grown from Arp to Tyler.” In East Texas, the people of ASB have the privilege of giving to and volunteering for everything from the East Texas Crisis Center, to the Kyle Lake Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs and of course the American Cancer Society – this year, bringing Morgan to East Texas to raise funds, awareness and the overall level of fun at this year’s Gala.

“After that song came out, five years later, my mother passed away,” said Morgan. “She died of pancreatic cancer. So again, any time we are given the opportunity to try to help, we want to participate.” “I know I speak for everyone at American State Bank when I say we are excited to bring Craig Morgan here to Tyler for the Cattle Baron’s Gala in 2013,” Steele said. “He is an excellent entertainer and will draw in more people to this event, therefore raising more money for research to hopefully one day eradicate cancer.” Morgan will be headlining this year's Gala and sharing his own story. It’s a pretty interesting one, to say the least. Originally from Tennesee, Morgan spent several years in the U.S. military, serving with the 82nd and 101st Army Airborne divisions before pursuing a career in country music that has just hit the 10-year mark. He’s released seven albums so far, and has appeared 17 times on the Billboard charts, including in the top spot. He spends about 250 days a year on the road performing and filming his other “job” for “Craig Morgan All Access Outdoors” on the Outdoor Channel. It chronicles his life as he makes time for everything from aerial bow fishing to dogsled racing. Throw in a little bit of acting (Lifetime’s “Army Wives” and TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles”) and recording a new album; and yeah, you could say that’s a pretty packed schedule. Yet, when given the chance to come out to East Texas and perform at the Tyler Cattle Barons’ Gala, Morgan made sure there was a space clear on his already-full calendar. During a tiny open window in that hectic schedule, BSCENE had the exclusive opportunity to sit down with the singer/songwriter to hear him tell his story, and why the Cattle Barons’ Gala is more than just another gig. “You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way,” said Morgan. “Whether it be a direct relative, a close friend, or a friend of a friend. I think just about everybody in this country has been touched by cancer. So I think when we are given the opportunity to give back with an organization like this, I think it’s very important that we do [it].” It’s an incredibly kind sentiment, and Morgan has certainly backed it up on numerous occasions, performing at multiple cancer fundraisers throughout his career. But in a cruel twist of life imitating art, Morgan had a much more personal encounter with the disease. He released a song in 2006, called “Tough,” about a mother’s strength and struggle in

No. 16 BS CENE

the face of a battle with cancer. The song is a heart-wrenching portrait and a beautiful story. “After that song came out, five years later, my mother passed away,” said Morgan. “She died of pancreatic cancer. So again, any time we are given the opportunity to try to help, we want to participate.” Morgan has held a lot of jobs, and his schedule is almost comically congested, but he knows that there are still things he can do to help the cause. Maybe it’s not donning a lab coat or running experiments, but it’s no less vital. Everyone has a role to play, whether you’re making a donation in someone’s name, organizing an event or playing the main stage. “I think that the same can go for anybody,” said Morgan. “You don’t have to be the doctor performing the exam. You don’t have to be the person performing the studies. You don’t have to be the country singer coming in to do a show to try to help bring attention to it. There are lots of ways – lots of simple ways – that you can participate and be a part. It doesn’t take much.” Having lost his mother to the disease, Morgan of course feels a personal connection to the American Cancer Society. However, now that he’s got a wife and kids of his own, there is even more of an impetus for him to share a message of compassion and giving with those around him. It’s another change of perspective for this storyteller. “I want my children to be aware that giving is a big part of the receiving,” Morgan said. “We’re blessed, and I think when you share your blessings you’ll be blessed even more ... this is just a way that we share ... I think it’s very important that we teach our children the importance of sharing and being a part of your community.” The involvement in the community and translation of those values to young people is a concept with which Steele also wholeheartedly agrees: “Our passion is to help those who can’t help themselves,” said Steele. “The organizations which we choose to serve primarily benefit children or parents to further advance the future of the next generation. Our past, present and future is in this community. We are dedicated and invested in this community! “As a teenager, a very strong role model in my life passed away from cancer; he was only 59,” continued Steele. “It has forever impacted my life, and I feel strongly that with research this disease can be cured by advancements in medications and treatments. There is very rarely a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. His name was Jim Paul, and I miss him every day.” Unfortunately, almost everyone has their own story to tell about cancer. But that personal connection is what leads us all to donate our time and effort. That connection makes it real and tangible, and it drives us to find new tests, treatments and procedures. And those personal connections give us our stories. “Mainly I’m drawn to it individually, personally,” Morgan said. “I’m very blessed, and I think it’s important that we share our blessings. Having been in the military, I maintain that relationship with them now through being an entertainer. There’s the saying: ‘Once a soldier, always a soldier.’ I’m just a soldier in a different capacity now. And when it comes to children, I just don’t think we can do enough. I think it’s extremely important that we, as a nation, embrace our youth and do everything we can to ensure that they are educated and healthy so that we can maintain a free nation. Again, when I use the term ‘healthy’ [I’m referring to the] organizations out there that are doing those things, performing those surveys and tests, and the efforts to try to help us maintain our health and be a healthy nation. We can’t be a secure nation if we’re not a healthy nation. I think it’s important that, as an entertainer or really anybody, we do what we can to ensure that those needs are being met.” Every year, the American Cancer Society and an ever-changing group of volunteers and community partners come together for the Cattle Barons’ Gala. The goal: to raise funds so that these stories can continue to be told in hopes that one day all that will remain are the stories. by William Knous, wknous@bscenemag.com B S CE N E M AG.COM

SMOOTH SAILING ON ROUGH WATERS ummertime is made for vacations. Regrettably that dream cruise, looping ride at an amusement park or long car trip leaves some travelers miserable and longing for home instead. Even so, don't cash in those tickets just yet. Local experts weigh-in on how to keep from going through the motions of travel sickness for your next vacation. For some, motion sickness can cause strong physical symptoms interfering with their much needed vacation. The condition of motion sickness results from conflicting senses in the brain when the body is in motion. Essentially, the motion that is felt and the motion that is seen do not sync up. Most of the time, the brain senses the body's movement as one signal and the inner ear, or vestibular system, senses movement as well. "These two signals are put together in the brain. If these signals conflict, then the brain perceives motion and motion sickness is felt," says Jennifer Saurette, M.D. at East Texas Medical Center. The symptoms of motion sickness can ruin a vacation and often include nausea, dizziness, unsteadiness, sweating, perceived warmth, increased saliva production and general malaise. "Individuals can experience these symptoms in response to any movement, but it is most likely when in a car, on a boat or on a recreational or carnival-type ride," says Bethany Starks, RN, FNP-C, at East Texas Medical Center, Lake Palestine. "If you have experienced motion sickness while in a car or on a recreational ride, you may be susceptible to motion sickness on a cruise."

No. 20 BS CENE

B S CE N E M AG.COM

Certain groups of people are also more susceptible to motion sickness than others, says Dr. Saurette. Women in general have more problems with it than men. Pregnancy is definitely a risk factor, and anyone with migraines or inner ear problems may also be more likely to experience symptoms. Anita Scribner, M.D., Infectious Disease/Internal Medicine of The Diagnostic Clinic of Longview and Hospitalist for Longview Regional Medical Center, loves to travel. She remarked motion sickness most likely occurs when travelers in motion are concentrating on activities inside the vehicle (or vessel) such as reading, watching a movie or playing electronic games. "There are certain medications that can predispose [someone] to motion sickness, such as hydroxychloroquine and mefloquine, which are both used by travelers to prevent malaria," Dr. Scribner added. Thankfully, travelers don't have to suffer. There are several options for things you can do to change your environment, as well as medications you can take to assist in the treatment of motion sickness and help "uncross" these mixed signals in the brain. Taken in advance of travel, certain medications can be effective in preventing motion sickness. "The most commonly used prescription medicine is the Scopolamine patch. This is a patch that can stay on your skin for three days," Dr. Scribner saids. "It is often used for nausea but is also used for motion sickness." There are also many non-prescription or over-thecounter options that are widely available. "Medications include antihistamines (Benadryl, meclizine), anticholinergics (scopolamine patches), and benzodiazepines (lorazepam)," Dr. Saurette said. She also warned "But all of the medications have the potential to cause sedation, which is a drawback to them." To treat symptoms after they have already started, Starks encourages travelers to try environmental changes like focusing on a stationary object on the horizon. This allows the motion a person feels to also match the motion that person sees. "Passengers in a car should sit in the front seat in order to view outside the car rather than focusing on a fixed object within a vehicle, such as a book. If on a boat, passengers should attempt to view land or the horizon rather than objects within the boat or cabin," Starks suggested. Oftentimes, someone may not know they are going to experience motion sickness until they are actually on the boat. So if it's too late to B SCENEMAG. CO M

consult a doctor or to purchase medicines, what can a traveler do to feel better and enjoy the vacation? Starks explained studies reveal taking 2 grams of ginger can decrease motion sickness. Ginger is easily found in teas and gingersnaps. Acupressure may also be effective to fight motion sickness. Other strategies include closing the eyes and taking a nap which may help unscramble mixed signals in the body. Dr. Scribner said many people who experience motion sickness often find out as a child riding in the back seat of a car. Health care providers advise parents to keep an eye on children who can be more susceptible to motion sickness, as some experience motion sickness – even on short car rides. Children under 2 generally do not suffer from it. The incidence of motion sickness also typically peaks at the age of 12 and decreases from there. "Children with migraines are more likely to experience motion sickness," Starks added. "[They] can take over-the-counter medications to decrease motion sickness, but parents can help children avoid motion sickness by not allowing them to read books, watch movies or play video games while riding in a car." Parents should also consult with their child's pediatrician and make sure they know all the possible side effects from medications used to treat motion sickness and how they may affect their child. Motion sickness is treatable and preventable. If you are concerned about possible motion sickness prior to a trip, it is best to consult with you health care provider to discuss prescription options. Don't let motion sickness put a damper on your vacation. Remember, a little planning and a short discussion with your doctor before that much-anticipated getaway can insure sure smooth sailing ahead. by Laura Jett Krantz JUNE 2013

HYALURONIC ACID DERMAL FILLERS Everyone’s skin ages differently and with the natural aging process, a person’s skin loses volume and develops wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid naturally exists as a component of skin, and with time the amount of hyaluronic acid decreases. Dermal fillers may be used to replace this loss and rejuvenate problem areas. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are smooth, gel fillers, that when injected into the skin, bind to water, filling in and instantly smoothing away wrinkles. These products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin or to correct mild and moderate facial wrinkles and folds. The most commonly treated areas include smile or laugh lines, Marionette lines, lipstick lines and the corners of the mouth. They may also be used for lip enhancement. With just one treatment, you can get smooth and natural-looking results that last up to a year. Dermal fillers can be infused with a local anesthetic to improve comfort during treatment. After treatment, you might experience some swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than seven days. If you have previously had cold sores, an injection may cause an outbreak; therefore prophylaxis is recommended. To reduce the likelihood of bruising, you should avoid aspirin, NSAIDs or other mediations that thin your blood prior to treatment. These products should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under the age of 18 years. Dr. Saar is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

ANKLE SPRAINS

Special Advertising Section

Attorneys &

Financial Advisors COMING TO THE

OCTOBER 2013

An ankle sprain is a very common injury, occurring approximately 25,000 times each day in the United States. Ankle injuries are responsible for over 1 million ER visits per year. These injuries are responsible for significant time off work or recreational activities. Treatment of ankle sprains is initially by the RICE principle or Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and antiinflammatory medication. Fortunately most ankle sprains are minor and the patient can usually return to pain free activities after a few weeks. However, the ligament(s) that is sprained may take up to 3 months or more to completely heal. A repeat injury during this time can lead to chronic ankle instability. Proper rehabilitation and strengthening of the ankle is important to avoid future injury. After rehab of an ankle sprain if the ankle is still unstable your doctor may recommend ligament repair to avoid developing chronic ankle issues. Another injury that can occur at the same time as the ankle sprain is an injury to the cartilage in the ankle joint. This injury can be assessed by Xray or MRI and needs to be addressed before arthritis and chronic ankle pain develops. Through advances in arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery this can usually be accomplished through two small incisions in front of the ankle joint. After this outpatient surgery most patients are non-weight bearing for four to six weeks then rehabilitation is started. This procedure can get you back on your feet to do the activities you love to do and God made you to do. Dr. Rath is fellowship-trained in foot and ankle surgery.

CATERING TYLER DOES IT ALL

O

n an unexpectedly cold and rainy Thursday, the “Man” made his way from downtown Tyler to almost as far south Tyler as one can go. In the pouring rain, with notebook and umbrella in hand and puddle-jumping each step of the way, I landed at the door of The Diner on South Broadway. We heard that the most creative new catering concept was afoot in East Texas – and I just had to check it out. So-o, “neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” and we sought to interview the rumored progenitor in a back booth to get the full scoop. To my surprise, bursting through the back door with sacks and boxes of catering samples to taste was ex-marine, former Luby’s Cafeteria manager and Colonial Hills Baptist Deacon Lloyd Nichols. It was astonishing! This “hail fella well met” came in a-grinnin’, talkin’ and layin’ out food samples for our photographer to shoot before we pigged out. Our first fair of delight was crispy Popeye’s Cajunfried chicken, red beans and rice, corn on the cob, cole slaw and the best honey biscuits under heaven. Lloyd brought enough to feed the Marine Corps, so his Diner staff ate heartily. He treats these folks like his own family. The next tastin’ was Eli’s Subs, which are sold by-the-foot. He served up for us thickly-sliced layers of turkey and ham loaded with two kinds of cheese; fresh lettuce; tomatoes and onions on homemade, fresh-baked buns. They were prepared as we waited in The Diner. All I can say: out-of-this-world good! And the staff finished them off, of course. As if that wasn't enough, the grand finale was a grilled and blackened medley of tilapia and shrimp with Seafood Omelet Étouffée. It will set you free! Are you hungry yet? These were just samples of what Catering Tyler has to offer. Yep, that’s it! Catering Tyler is the name. So, if you need catering for a big event or just food for a few people, Catering Tyler has you covered. They provide offerings from The Diner, Eli’s Subs and Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen. No matter what the tastes, you can find the perfect meal at a great price. (Loyd Nichols owns the local franchise for The Diner and Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen. He owns Eli’s Subs outright.) B SCENEMAG. CO M

Catering Tyler brings the best of East Texas together. They offer crowd-pleasing meals at great prices. You choose: breakfast and lunch items from The Diner (recently voted a favorite breakfast spot in Tyler); Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, which is arguably Louisiana’s best; or Eli’s Subs that are perfect for business meetings, seminar lunches or church functions and are served by-thefoot and stacked high. Listen, Catering Tyler has no minimum group size and will deliver to your location or even serve all your guests on the spot. Hey, from plasticware to fine china and weddings to family meals, Catering Tyler does it all. Want to have steaks, chicken or fish grilled on the site on their 48 inch portable grill? They can do it! How about omelets cooked-toorder at your place? You got it! The “Man” is sold. Our next catered event will be with Lloyd Nichols and Catering Tyler. You must check it out. Your party will be the talk of Tyler! So, if you’re out and about, look for us, we’ll be about town. by Dr. Aubrey Sharpe

Experience the New

the

“TRU”er TAN

T

ru Tan now offers the latest and greatest, award-winning VersaPro Heated Sunless Spa Series – and is the only tanning salon in Tyler who carries it (the nearest location is Dallas!). The open-air booth design has an easy-to-use voice guide and height sensors to accommodate any height achieving a complete, full-body tan. Rather than receiving a spray tan from a salon employee, the VersaPro is the best at accomplishing the same result and your experience is private – and you still receive the slimming effect of a personal airbrush. The VersaPro machine has three integrated heat ports, which allows each spray nozzle to release a spray that will keep you warm and dry, from start to finish. With a new user-friendly design, a revolutionary touchscreen and operating system, it allows us to perfectly customize a treatment session for our clients. Whether it be for a simple, light glow or a rich, dark shade, the professional solution is super moisturizing; 100-percent paraben free; professional-grade; botanically-infused ingredients; and will last up to 40 percent longer than other spray machines. These solutions now provide anti-aging ingredients for your whole body! If you choose to come in for the first class Tru Tan experience and use our new, masterfully designed VersaPro, you will leave our salon with the perfect tan at the best price. After you receive your tanning application in the VersaPro, we recommend pairing it with SunlessPro 360 Tanning Bronzer by Sunless Inc. The spray bottle is a 360-degree spray, infused with Vitamin D3, caffeine and avocado oil. It can be used between each sunless session to enhance and extend the tan’s wearability. It won’t leave you feeling like you put on a fake product that others can see. You will feel confident in your skin because the spray goes on evenly, is streak-free and leaves you feeling like you’ve got a natural tan. For weekly specials on our VersaPro, other products and services you can’t find in other salons, please download our Tru Tan mobile app for iPhone or Android smartphones. Visit our website, www.mytrutan.com or you may also sign up for our text specials by texting trutan to 33916. And lastly, you may receive specials in our Salons, Facebook or Twitter. LAYOUT & LOUNGE

This summer, whether you are relaxing on a white, sandy beach or lounging poolside at the nearest country club; make sure your beach bag is filled with the basic necessities for that hot summer day. To help, here's a peek of my summer beach bag and what’s inside.

Fashion-Friendly Beach Bag

No description needed on this Vera Bradley “Lilli Bell” Seashore Tote from Spinout in Tyler. The collection also offers a small, matching packing cube made of breathable mesh. It’s the perfect size to discreetly pack your unmentionables or a wet swimsuit. (Bag $65, Packing Cube $16.)

First And Foremost… Sunscreen I have to admit, because I have an olive skin tone and I usually don’t get sunburns, I’ve become a little lax on my sunscreen regimen. However, this year, I’m making sunscreen a top priority, especially since 40 is around the corner. So, I asked a few girlfriends what they recommend and one friend mentioned that her father had skin cancer and she uses what his doctor recommended: La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique. This brand can be found at your local CVS. I opted to try the Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, Anthelios 60 for the face, which comes in various strengths of protection. The lightweight sunscreen is fast absorbing, has a matte finish for normal to combination skin and is water resistant for 40 minutes. It offers advanced/broad-spectrum protection from UVA/UVB rays and has an antioxidant to boot for $30!

Healthy Snacks

When I started working out regularly a year ago, I learned the amount of processed carbs I ate was slowing down my weight loss and hindering my overall health. So, I reluctantly cut back on those little bad guys and found some great, healthy and tasty snacks to make the change more bearable. Blot Your Sweat Spots KIND bars are an all-natural treat, with some varieties offering a gluten-free and Even though you’re going to be hot and sweaty, there’s no reason you can’t look as dairy-free alternative. The best part? With cool as a cucumber. To help keep your face a selection ranging from pomegranate/ blueberry/pistachio; macadamia and looking fresh, try Salma Hayek’s Nuance apricot to (my favorites) cranberry/almond Ageless Clarity™ Facial Blotting Papers for and peanut butter/dark chocolate; you’re $8 at CVS. The blotting papers have tea sure to satisfy even the pickiest eaters! I buy tree leaf extract with a light scent. These mine at FRESH, Honey Tree and even at the absorbent little papers remove excess oil checkout line inside Starbucks for $1.50 to and shine to keep you from looking wilted $2.50 per bar. and weathered in the sun.

Water Repellent Slip-Ons

Cover Up

Find your footing in the sand or on those hot patio pool decks with this generation’s “jelly” shoe by Melissa®. Much more comfortable than the ones I wore in the 80s, I opted for these silver, Melissa Campana Zig Zag glitter jelly ballet flats ($80), and they are actually one of only two pairs of flats I own! They go great with everything from a swim cover up to a long, flowing maxi dress (available online at Saks Fifth Avenue or at 20 Two 10 Boutique at The Market at The Crossing in Tyler.

Pack this Gretchen Scott Designs tunic (Spinout, $90) in your bag for the day. It goes nicely with the jelly flats and can be worn as a cover up. By Veronica Terres

eing a hairstylist was something I always wanted. My parents wanted me to go to college, so from 1996-1998 I did. I attended TJC where I was also a member of the famous Apache Belle drill team. I knew the career I was headed for was not going to be something I enjoyed for the rest of my life, so I followed my dreams and attended Kilgore College cosmetology. Once I had 1,000 hours under my belt, I was able to start my apprenticeship at Toni & Guy where I had the best training to cut and color. Now, 13 years later, I have my own salon – Beauty Bar. This salon has been a true blessing from God for me and my family. We just celebrated our one year anniversary in March. I have the most amazing clients and group of stylists. Rachel Thompson, Kay Schultz, Elizabeth Garcia, Irene Jones, and Morgan Mcgill are the most talented and fun group of women. We all keep up with the latest trends and attend hair shows and training on a regular basis. Our goal is to listen to clients and make them feel better about themselves. We want you to feel pretty every time you walk out our door! Call and make an appointment today! 903.581.2966

THE FABRIC Outdoor fabrics are not like indoor fabrics – they have to stand the test of time and weather. However, you still want them to be luxurious. “Outdoor spaces are extensions of your home,” said LeRae Musslewhite, owner of Tyler’s TEXTURE custom fabric shop. “You want them to feel like home.” Sunbrella outdoor fabrics are Musslewhite's top choice for outdoor draperies, upholstery and cushions. The extensive collection comes in patterns from stripes to florals to polk-a-dots and a beach motif, and is specially treated to withstand the heat, the rain, the pounding sun – almost all weather conditions. Another great line Musslewhite recommends is made completely of recycled PVC pipes. “It’s still soft; they work great and it’s a less-expensive line,” she explained. Because outdoor fabrics are so durable and versatile these days, there’s no need to worry about using “traditional” outdoor furniture, she explained. “The looks you can create are amazing,” Musslewhite said. She recommends making your outdoor space a plush one, with outdoor fabrics and draperies for patios, accent pillows, cushions for outdoor chaise lounges, and chairs and cushions. However, be sure to use Stay-Dry foam for cushion pads, she suggests. It doesn’t hold water, mold or mildew and is quite essential for this part of the country. by Amy Brocato Pearson

hat happens when a company takes a real, tangible interest in their community? Using the word “company” might seem a bit impersonal, but Suddenlink Communications is not exactly your local corner store. They are the seventh largest entertainment and communications company in the U.S., operating at the highest levels of technology and skill across the globe. But to sit down with their employees and their leadership, you might never know it. Suddenlink has always staked their reputation on the people they employ and partner with, making their concerns and priorities known through those relationships and their interaction with the community around them. And those relationships – or as they like to call them, partnerships – are focused on the communities they call home. That is what led them to a long and productive partnership with the University of Texas at Tyler, beginning with the UT Tyler Suddenlink Patriot Million Dollar Hole-In-One. The honorary organization now known as the Patriots began in 1984, with a very distinguished list of outstanding young men and women who provided a much-needed volunteer link between the business community and The University of Texas at Tyler. Its purpose from the beginning was to “promote the academic, cultural and activity programs of UT Tyler,” which included encouraging scholars

and scholarships. In March 1986, this ambitious group created the Million Dollar Hole-in-One Contest in conjunction with what was the Eisenhower Golf Classic. The Hole-in-One Contest provided an opportunity for daily winners, who were closest to the hole, in the week-long event to compete in a final shot at the $1 million prize. The funds raised created hundreds of student scholarships over the ensuing years. In 2001, a permanent scholarship endowment was established with $29,000 of the Patriots’ proceeds. The market value of this scholarship fund has grown to almost $600,000 – with even more tacked on after the totals from 2013. The interest on this endowment provides the means for many UT Tyler students to attend college, many of whom might not have the opportunity without these funds. With the decrease in state appropriations for higher education, these scholarships are needed now more than ever. The UT Tyler Suddenlink Hole-In-One Contest allows the community to take a proactive role to ensure that East Texas is a welleducated region. When Suddenlink came on board years ago, it was with the desire to join in that mission – to take on that proactive role in East Texas. “It’s a commitment to do what’s right for our community,” said Todd Cruthird, Suddenlink Senior Vice President of Operations in the region. “Our goal is to be a good corporate citizen, by ensuring B S CE N E M A G.COM

our investments – whether they be financial or utilization of our media arm to heighten awareness – are all effective in making East Texas a better place to live. By joining forces with UT Tyler, we believe we are accomplishing just that. And it's not only that, it's a personal commitment … It has been for me, and my family, and it is a personal commitment for many of the folks in our organization, whose children attend UT Tyler. I think a community can only thrive – and a company can only thrive – with good people.” Both Suddenlink and UT Tyler share a bond in that way. UT Tyler can be judged by its people: the employees, students, faculty and beyond. The faces you see and the people on the ground are the ones who are the real examples of both organizations, the representatives of the ideals both organizations espouse. Even with a cursory glance at Suddenlink’s television commercials, the focus is not on the broadband technology or the new DVR capabilities; it’s on the people who make up the company.

Suddenlink has always staked their reputation on the people they employ and partner with, making their concerns and priorities known through those relationships and their interaction with the community around them. “Suddenlink is a company that has done everything for us, from partnering financially to supporting various projects, and certainly the Hole-In-One is the most visible,” said UT Tyler President Dr. Rod Mabry. “But individuals associated with the company have made major gifts as well, over time, so there are actually buildings named for Suddenlink people. And, there are more dimensions than that. [Cruthird] already mentioned that so many employees and students are attending UT Tyler. Then there are other, smaller things, like when we asked them to help us out with some fiber optic cable to get our new dorm going, with wireless internet access and how important that is on the University campus. It just mean’t the world to us … and Suddenlink hasn’t missed a beat for years and years. Suddenlink will continue helping get our name out. And we like being associated with Suddenlink’s name too, because they are a quality organization in the community. People in town think of Suddenlink as one of those stalwart companies, and that makes it valuable for us to have their name on the Hole-In-One. In addition to that UT Tyler is incredibly appreciative of what amounts to a direct scholarship donation: those dollars go straight into an endowment to help students for all time, at UT Tyler.” Cruthird feels that, as an organization, Suddenlink fits well with UT Tyler. It’s not only business services, the Internet, the networking, the backbone and the communications benefit that Suddenlink offers, because that’s their business. Suddenlink is truly proud of the brand. “The Suddenlink brand has probably, truthfully in the last several years, become one of the strongest brands (if not the strongest brand) in our industry and we are very proud of that,” Cruthird said. “But UT Tyler should be proud of their brand as well, because what Dr. Mabry and UT have done is outstanding. It’s forward-thinking; not just in academics, but with growing the nursing program, the vision to add a pharmacy school and also with the amazing work Howard Patterson (Director of Athletics) and his department have done with the athletics program. It’s a boost for the school and the region that UT Tyler is able to draw talented athletes from all over to East Texas. In fact, the UT Tyler Men’s Golf team just won the Division III National Championship: that’s something that definitely adds to the brand!” Both Cruthird and Mabry agree that when an organization knows they’re doing the right thing for the community, that’s what B S CENEMAG. CO M

makes corporate sponsorship more than simply profitable. Simply writing a check might get you the same tax benefits, and any university is always pleased to accept donations of any size. However, the partnership between UT Tyler and Suddenlink results in real, tangible benefits for the people of East Texas: for students who would not be able to go to college without a scholarship or for families who are trying to make better lives for themselves. “I think the Hole-In-One is probably one of the greatest events we do as an organization, not just here in Tyler but company wide,” said Cruthird. “We’re very excited and very proud of giving back to something that goes into an endowment and will be giving for many years to come.” “The Suddenlink Hole-In-One is an event that has been around a while and has its own life,” agreed Dr. Mabry. “It is very much a part of the University but there is a cadre of individuals who take time each year to put this on, to plan it, to set up and then spend a week of their vacations in most cases. There are so many wonderful volunteers! Many of them are alums and that’s absolutely the life blood of why this thing can continue to grow and why these types of things can happen.” One thing is for sure, during the week of the Hole-In-One qualifying, and leading up to the finals, there is a flurry of life, of activity and engagement with the community. The weeklong nature of it means that there is coverage across different types of media, engaging people at all levels and building awareness for the event, and more importantly building a foundation of giving in the community. “This partnership has truly been for the benefit of so many,” said Cruthird. “I like the fact that Suddenlink has been an effective sponsor. I really like the fact that there are so many individuals that also have been big big supporters over the years. That makes us proud: individually and as a university and as a company.” So, what does the future hold for the partnership between UT Tyler and Suddenlink? Though they are quite pleased with the success they’ve had, Cruthird and Mabry do believe Hole-In-One will continue to live and grow and be prosperous for both organizations. Continuing the tradition of Suddenlink and UT Tyler meeting over athletics and public interest, there are currently talks to make video content from the many successful UT athletics programs accessible through Suddenlink’s VOD. Though that’s still a ways off, the potential for both parties – and the public – is remarkable.

“Our goal is to be a good corporate citizen, by ensuring our investments – whether they be financial or utilization of our media arm to heighten awareness – are all effective in making East Texas a better place to live. At its founding many years ago, even though they hoped, perhaps no one could have guessed at the continual success of the Hole-InOne event. And that success would not have been possible without the determination and cooperation of Suddenlink, the UT Tyler Patriots organization and many others that promote and ensure the success of an event aimed squarely at improving the lives of the people of their community: their coworkers, neighbors and friends. “The Hole-In-One has been a tradition, and anytime you can create an event as a corporate sponsor that allows your brand to be recognized in an effort of good will, that makes it a win-win,” said Cruthird. “Being a co-owner with the University is something we are very proud of. It’s amazing that it continues to build value for students, families and the university. Obviously, that is our past and it will be our future.” J U N E 2 0 1 3 No. 83

ART& SOLE LISA HORLANDER TURNS LOW-TOPS INTO HIGH ART

W

hen Lisa Horlander was a student at Robert E. Lee High School, she used to cause mischief – for doodling on her footwear. “I chronically drew on my shoes and got in trouble for it,” said the vibrant and bubbly 29-year-old, who is now married and the mother of a 6-year-old son.

The irony is that Horlander now makes a living by drawing on shoes; painting on them to be precise... Horlander has an online store where she sells TOMS shoes, custom painted to order or adorned with a design of your choice from her extensive catalog of selections. TOMS are a flat, canvas shoe, right on-trend these days and made even more popular by their fair trade status and their 'give back' approach to retail. For each pair sold, the TOMS company donates a pair of shoes to children in need. It all started when Racquet & Jog in Tyler hosted an event where local artists painted TOMS shoes while customers waited in the store. "I didn't even know what TOMS were," she joked, "but I was allabout painting on them!" After the event, her husband set up her shop on ETSY, an online clearinghouse for handmade items. "It's been amazing," she gushed. "I have customers from all over the world. I've sent shoes to Israel [and] so many other different countries." Currently, she has over 45 designs in her online catalog, but she can create any kind of design that a customer can dream up. Her most popular design is a giraffe, whose long neck wraps around the side of the shoe; and dream catchers, where customers can select the color of the feathers to be used in the Native American motif. Clients can also choose the color of the shoe and the size. Most of the shoes are purchased through Racquet & Jog, but she also buys some directly from TOMS.

In December 2012, Mayor Barbara Bass asked Horlander to paint a piece for her in conjunction with an event to commemorate the opening of the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital.

Since the start of her business venture two years ago, Horlander has produced hundreds of custom pairs, including "a ton of wedding shoes." Her favorite: a narwhal (an Arctic whale) whose body wraps around the shoe and it's tail flips to one side. That particular design takes her about five to six hours, while some of the simpler designs take her two hours to complete. She uses a fine art acrylic paint, the same as you'd use for fine art painting on canvas. "I don't recommend washing your shoes but I've tried it out on my own and it does hold up," she reported. When she is not working on TOMS, Horlander (who has a degree in fine arts from Tyler Junior College) primarily does fine art painting. Horlander creates watercolors "for pure enjoyment" and also does sketches of people and animals. She's filled commissions for the Tyler Chamber of Commerce and other Tyler entities. In December 2012, Mayor Barbara Bass commissioned a piece in conjunction for an event to commemorate the opening of the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital. Horlander's offering: a heart surrounded by branches; it was a popular seller during the event. Currently, she's working to illustrate a children's book, a project she calls her "dream." She also teaches art classes in her home to both children and adults to share her love of art. Some of Horlander's best inspirations come straight from customers, like the giraffe shoe design. "I always thought giraffes were cute, but I didn't realize so many other people thought so," she reflected. Current fashion trends are also always on her radar as she pays attention to which motifs are popular. Horlander's ETSY store has a large selection of songbirds, which are currently trendy. When she's not painting, teaching, and painting some more; Horlander works a morning shift at Einstein Bagels in Tyler while her son is in school. "It's the best of both worlds," she says. by Amy Brocato Pearson

TECH REVIEW

Does your favorite perfume not come in a roller ball or travel spray forcing you to carry a huge, clunky bottle around? So, what do you do when you need a little extra scented mist to give you the confidence you deserve, nay demand, in your hectic lifestyle? The answer: Travalo. What is Travalo, you ask? Travalo, is a self-contained, refillable perfume/cologne canister that allows you to travel with just a portion of your favorite perfume or cologne. A rubber gasket at the bottom of the atomizer allows you to pump and store up to 65 spritzes of your favorite aromatic water, without any funnels. The Travalo boasts a “no spills” experience for its users. However, the best aspect of the Travalo is it’s ability to go anywhere. It makes boarding a plane with your scent a much more hassle-free journey. Our main concern with the product is the potential mixing of fragrance as one perfume/cologne is refilled with another. The Travalo is available in spritz and roller-ball models and comes in a variety of colors.

...AND THERE YOU HAVE IT

CAMP, MAVS,

CHAMPIONSHIPS ... AND TLC

I

watched it for the first time, and even though I knew the outcome, my heart raced in anticipation. The excitement grew and I could feel my palms getting sweaty, and I could hear my Mom saying, “Sit down, quit pacing, you’re driving me crazy!” As it neared the end, I could feel moisture in my eyes as they welled up with tears of excitement, relief and happiness. I was so thankful I was alone, so no one could see what an idiot I was making of myself. Yes, how proud I could be of myself in this moment, 48-years-old, broken breathing pattern, tears like a newborn baby, and all watching a video that is almost two years old. If my Army Special Operations unit could just see Sergeant Cox now, whimpering like a puppy wanting to be fed.

MY FINAL GLANCE WAS AT THE TROPHY, PERCHED BETWEEN MY HANDS, GRASPED LIKE A CHILD GETTING A SNOW CONE FOR THE FIRST TIME. As the time ran out on the DVR selection I had chosen, my memory took me back to that night, in June 2011, when the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat and won the NBA Championship. The cries of “It’s Time,” “reDIRKulous,” “Take Dat Wit Chew,” and, my favorite, when Mark Jackson said on a late Dirk basket, “Momma, there goes that man!” flooded my mind as it seemed like only seconds ago. Even those who weren’t sports fans rooted for “My Mavs” to beat the Miami Lebrons, the South Beach Wades those Florida Bosh’s. Watching them go down was sheer ecstasy for most. Instead of a group that sold out just to say they won a title; here was a team that fought hard together to put their past failures in the past. Here was the consummate team player in Nowitzki, who passed up bigger money, “and kept his talents in the Big D.” There was Don Carter and wife Linda Jo accepting the trophy as the best team in basketball, and Mark Cuban, with his mouth shut looking like a man of dignity and class, as he realized what it meant to the Carter’s and all of us who had been through the team's ups and downs. Whether 1 year old, or 100, we were all going through this moment together for the very first time. In 1980, I entered the drawing to name the Mavericks, and actually had two of the final five options to name the team. In this moment, it didn’t matter that the "Stampede" or the "Mustangs" were not chosen, because ever since my 10th grade year, the Mavericks were my team.

From Brad and Ro, Kiki and Acguire, Tarpley and Donaldson, Dantley and the Jet, and from Derek to Dirk, none of it mattered. “We are the Champions" had a whole new meaning as Freddie Mercury and Queen belted it out over the loud speaker. The 2006 meltdown was gone. The timeout while we were tied was gone, (yes, you know the one). All the misery was over, and there was no more, "We’ll get ‘em next year." I finally regained my composure. As I went to my office and picked up the project I was working on, I couldn’t help but sneak a peak at the ball signed by all the Mavs and my very own piece of the Miami hardwood where it all happened. Yes, they are right there beside My J-Kidd bobble head, my locker room nameplate from Fantasy Camp – all perched under Dirk’s MVP picture holding the trophy, with all my other memorabilia. My final glance was at the trophy, perched between my hands, grasped like a child getting a snow cone for the first time. I have such good memories, and with the NBA playoffs continuing without my team, I remember the day Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle sat me down in his office and shared the important team issues it would take to win the title. He said, “TLC, I told them we were going to have the following: the best bench and chemistry in the NBA, the best ball movement in the NBA, the best zone defense in the NBA and be the best scramble team in the NBA. If they would do these four things, and sell out 100 percent to doing these things, we will win the title! Heck, Jet even tattooed the trophy to his body.”

THE CRIES OF “IT’S TIME,” “REDIRKULOUS,” “TAKE DAT WIT CHEW,” AND, MY FAVORITE, WHEN MARK JACKSON SAID ON A LATE DIRK BASKET, “MOMMA, THERE GOES THAT MAN...” The 2011 NBA Champions did all those things. Positive leadership was displayed by ownership, coaches, players and fans who all played a part in getting that parade to downtown Dallas after all these years. I know I am just an armchair quarterback and a blowhard fan, but my loyalty through the years made it such a great experience for me. But, it did make me think: Do I have the same passion for my spiritual life? Do I display the same zeal for my wife and kids? Am I trying hard to have this kind of leadership and commitment in my career? Time to get a pen and piece of paper and find the areas I’m going to use to take my life to the championship level... And there you have it. by Terry L. Cox "TLC"

EXAGGERATION NATION THE MOST IMPORTANT ARTICLE EVER WRITTEN BY MANKIND.

WE DON'T NEED TO BLOW EVERYTHING SO FAR OUT OF PROPORTION THAT IT'S VISIBLE FROM SPACE.

his is the most important article you will ever read. It contains the most insightful, soul-scorching text ever recorded in the history of the written word. If you ever recover from having read this monument to literary perfection, it will be a miracle that surpasses the parting of the Red Sea. After our civilization crumbles, if this article is all that is left behind, then the future will be safe and prosperous. It is truth purified by the all-consuming fires of eternal wisdom. If you can get through even one sentence without weeping at the crystalline beauty it contains, you are perhaps the strongest person walking this earth. Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit. I mean, this article probably has a couple of lines in there that would make someone laugh, but “purified truth” it most certainly isn't. Yet these days, that not-so-little distinction doesn't seem to matter. Our current cultural climate is not one of subtlety. There is so much vying for our attention that every sign, television show, movie poster or internet video has to be big and loud; kicking down the door of good taste like the Kool-Aid man in Michael Bay's leather jacket. The bombast continues through many forms: ads, movies, news – almost everything we consume. It's not simply peppered in selectively for effect. It's constant. We live in an exaggeration nation, and you can see it pretty much everywhere. A few days ago, my girlfriend capped off an epic run of seven consecutive sneezes by declaring the spring of 2013 to be “the worst allergy season ever!” First off, how could she possibly know that? Was she around for every single allergy season? Does USA Today collect recorded pollen counts from 1215 A.D.? Looking back, questioning her on the validity of her statement should probably have been delayed to a better time. By “better” I mean a time when she would not viciously pelt me with used tissues. Despite her aerial, phlegm-based assault, I can't really blame her. I'm sure she heard it on the

Can you pin it all on morally bankrupt cable news or an ESPN anchor with an immobile face and a jacket with 47 buttons? Probably not. It's your basic chicken/egg scenario: are we like this because we're inundated by exaggerated messages; or, are the over-the-top reports giving us what we already want? People want the biggest, newest and best versions of everything they can get. Why shouldn't that extend to the language we use? These are rhetorical questions, of course. We don't need the biggest, newest and best versions of everything. Likewise, we don't need to blow everything so far out of proportion that it's visible from space. Otherwise, we sound like those cynical, trained actors (I'm sorry, I mean, adorable little kids) from the AT&T commercials acting wild and screaming “more is always better!” Today is not the the worst day “ever.” You aren't hungrier than you've “ever been.” You're not literally going to punch someone if you don't get to meet Ryan Gosling. Just maybe you'd better tighten the language up a bit, before we all turn into the boys and girls who cried wolf. If we exaggerate everything to the point that there is only the most extreme and outrageous version of every event, description or reaction; what's the point of exaggeration in the first place? Then it's just normal again. by William Knous, wknous@bscenemag.com

No. 96

news. It seems that every year is the greatest or worst installment of all time. Allergy Apocalypse 2013! Debt Destruction 2012! Every year, month and week seems to bring a new extreme. It's always “the worst it's ever been!” Cable news networks are certainly not the only ones playing this game. Some of the worst offenders can be found in the sports world. A couple of months back, the Miami Heat reeled off a streak of 27 straight wins. During that stretch, their best player, LeBron James, dominated opponents like he was playing against tattooed toddlers. Was it an outstanding individual and team performance? Of course it was. Were they the greatest team of all time featuring the best athlete the planet has ever known? Absolutely not. Twenty seven games is not even close to a proper sample size to make that kind of declaration. However, that didn't slow ESPN down. For one week straight their programming consisted of shows featuring giant talking heads arguing about whether LeBron was better than Michael Jordan. (Spoiler alert: he's isn't!) In everyday life, we're prone to wild fits of exaggeration. It happens so often, we probably don't even notice how regularly we spout heinous lies like: “this is the best sandwich I've ever eaten” or, “I was literally mortified.” To be mortified originally meant a part of your body became necrotic and started to die. You're going to tell me you were so embarrassed that you became gangrenous? I'm willing to bet you've had a better sandwich than Arby's can make, and I don't think the fact that you had toilet paper on your shoe warranted a slow and painful death by embarrassment.
