Our History In 1929, Jørgen Jørgensen, a Norwegian outdoor enthusiast, began his search for durable outdoor equipment to perform in Norway’s harsh and rugged land. Starting with simple innovations such as leather straps, canvas backpacks and cotton clothing, he set Norrøna’s direction: to search for the best in technical advancements, to create the ultimate in performance product. Today, four generations later, as traditional mountain life broadens, we are still a family-owned and run company based near Oslo, Norway. From concept to creation, our in-house team of designers and craftsmen are compelled to stretch the edges of innovation. We build touchstone products, establish construction techniques, and redefine the meaning of fit, fabric, function and finish, based on our design principle of Loaded Minimalism. Our drive for practical purity produces pioneering benchmarks. We created the original mountain tunnel tent (1972), devised the standard monitoring system for backpacks (1979), and were the first company to use Gore-Tex® in Europe (1977). Our down products use the highest available down quality that we can find, which is a by-product of the food industry (in contrast to being killed just for insulation). Our down comes from the mountains of Pyrenees in France where the birds spend their days outside in a free gazing environment. All treatment of the birds complies with European standards, and the highly specialized washing of the down passes the Oeko-Tex 100 standards. This is a 300 g/m² tight woven cotton fabric. The recipe is from the 70's and we use the same construction today. The advantage with this fabric is that it breaths very well, it is highly windproof and gives good weather protection for a cotton. The fabric is very comfortable to wear. It works best in a dry and cold climate. Products with this fabric were used a lot on expeditions to the Northand South Pole up to year 2000, and in the Himalayas up to early 80's. This is definitively a classic fabric.

Pittards Goatskin: Pittards goatskin has all the attributes of our other goatskins, but is 0.9 mm thick with extra abrasion resistance provided by their unique Armortan® technology. 80% wool / 20% polyester

80% Wool / 20% polyester provides a combination of good insulation values with the added durability of a synthetic bonding fiber. This material is used in our gloves to provide loft trapping air to enhance the long-term insulation value. Mulesing free 100% Merino Wool

We use 100% Merino in our beanies. It is excellent at regulating body temperature and providing warmth. It draws moisture (sweat) away from the skin and is slightly moisture repellent, allowing the user to avoid the feeling of wetness.

Carrying system: integral™

integral™ is a solid, anatomical carrying system for moderate loads, up to 15 kg. Emphasis is placed on hip movement, weight distribution and practical solutions. Consisting of a laminated back with a vertical aluminium bar, it makes a classic yet sturdy carrying system, that also can be shaped after your back.

springsteel™

Combines low weight, simplicity, carrying comfort and movability. It is well suited to meet the needs of alpinists and mountaineers. Excellent range of movement and at the same time solid construction makes this one of the most innovative carrying systems on the market. A unique concept with springsteel™ is the one-piece light steel frame that distributes the weight of the pack between the shoulder straps, back and hip belt. This frame also moves with your body, hips, shoulders and rotates when the body moves. The springsteel™ system will feel stable even with weights up to 15-20 kg. Ride Rail™ system

A rail on each side of the pack provides two different positions for the shoulder strap “crossbar”. The carrying position: the position for crossbar at the bottom side of the backpack. This position provides good stability and weight support. But the low position tends to lift the pack up for each time you move your upper body or shoulders, and this solution is not that stable for high-speed activities. The ride position: release the side squeeze buckle at the bottom side of the pack, and move the aluminium buckle up along the rail. This high position tightens the pack closer to the rider, and avoids the pack to move up the rider´s back. It also separates the hip belt from the shoulder straps, and improves movement when riding. dynamic™
