about BSIDE BOOKS_
statement_
Bside Books (Self Produced & Limited Editions) is an independent editorial project whose philosophy is to be a platform for the self-production of projects and limited editions & books related to urban mobility and the interpretation of the territory produced and transformed by these movements.
More than just a publisher, Bside Books is a space for experimentation and research around ways that make self-funding possible. An independent publishing venture that offers a means to produce, disseminate, publish, support and/or self-manage editions and projects related to urban displacements and the territory.
Created by Carlos Albalá & Ignasi López, Bside Books explores different and carefully curated ways of materializing the work of artists in the world of printed publication. All our books are signed & numbered.
At Bside Books we explore ways of bringing to life projects that would have a hard time materialising in the mainstream publishing industry (or could become lost in overly ambitions art projects), and that are now possible thanks to multimedia tools and new high-quality digital printing technology. Self-funding, crowdfunding, collaborative production, limited on-demand printing, etc, are some of the models that we have explored and experimented with so far. As an independent publisher, we need to find a balance between the creative process, collaborative relationships and the means of production, so that we can continue to work side by side with authors and ensure that the result is always a singular, personal product. We want to remain faithful to the individual projects of artists who may have their strengths and weaknesses, but whose point of view is valid even if it is not encompassed in project-theses.
For us, every project entails its own research process. As editors we work towards helping each project become the best possible signature book, without sacrificing the author’s control, responsibility and creative consistency, and with the premise of the best possible balance between price, quality and production.

FAULT :: Carlos Albalá author_ Carlos Albalá editor_ Bside Books (Carlos Albalá & Ignasi López) design_ Bside Books (Carlos Albalá & Ignasi López) year_ 2011
FAULT is a temporary and close wander, through a fuzzy space and yet very bounded by a line or fault, with its micro-uses and micro-peripheries. FAULT began when I moved to live in Alcorcón, a south-west town on the outskirts of Madrid. For the last 3 years I’ve been wandering through the interstitial spaces that connect this population with Madrid. The main entrance is a straight highway that crosses the whole territory, leaving spaces at the edges and a configured experience as a result of ofterritorialization and deterritorialization. To document in an intimate,a personal idiosyncrasy and identity of spaces that were not relegated to be places, but instead, have their own bond and identity, their own sense of place through its micropractices and microoutkirts.
FAULT is a book published in PRINT ON DEMAND system. Until June 14, 2011 all submissions shaped the number of the book’s final edition. With the payment of 28 € every supporter received the book at home, numbered and signed by the author. The name of every supporter appears in credits’ page of the book as co-producer.

BOOK#003 LA GUÍA DE LAS RUTAS INCIERTAS Clara Nubiola 2011
LA GUÍA DE LAS RUTAS INCIERTAS :: Clara Nubiola
author_ Clara Nubiola editor_ Bside Books (Carlos Albalá & Ignasi López) design_ Bside Books year_ 2011
Every Monday, Clara Nubiola receives some coordinates from Bside books: A starting point for a walk. Clara must create a walking route to Barcelona using a 0,25 mm ballpoint pen in a notebook. Clara walks every Wednesday and traces her route. No plan. No particular aim. At the end of every week Clara sends her ilustrated route in to someone at Bside Books who is collecting them. Once Clara has submitted ten routes, Bside Books has the rights to design and publish the book entitled LA GUÍA DE LAS RUTAS INCIERTAS.
The idea for LA GUÍA DE LAS RUTAS INCIERTAS [UNCERTAIN ROUTES GUIDE] stemmed from a common interest between Bside Books and Clara Nubiola, to see the city in a different light, to experience it more intimately, to avoid the common tourist traps, to record both the attractions of the city centre and the outskirts, to present walking routes and the diverse perceptions of the city. All these issues belong to the Bside Books ideology and Clara Nubiola not only shares them but represents them brilliantly in this project.

BOOK#004 FIGUERES-PARIS: 5 HORES 30 MINUTS Pau Faus 2011
FIGUERES-PARIS: 5 HOURS 30 MINUTES :: Pau Faus author_ Pau Faus editor_ Bside Books design_ Bside Books + Pau Faus year_ 2011
This text introduces the book ‘Figueres-Paris: 5 hours 30 minutes’ edited and distributed by Bside books (limited edition 100 copies) and funded by the IV Agita grants of Figueres (Girona)
“December 19th 2010. The first high-speed train between Spain and
This work started from that usual statement that claims “Time is today’s distance”. Our project took the new 5 hours 30 minutes ‘distance’ between Figueres and Paris, and returned it to its primary state by walking it. The end result of this action was an improvised exploration of the territory (framed both by a predetermined direction and use of time) that allowed us to compare two very different urban environments. The simultaneity of our action offered also a performative interpretation of the exercise. While we were walking, I liked to think that what Pere and I were really doing was to photograph each other (face to face) simultaneous and repeatedly from 900 km. Despite this, and beyond other possible interpretations, the main objective of the project was very clear. It was about confronting two opposite ways of interacting with the territory: Fleetingness and Presence.
France departs Vilafant railway station (Figueres, Spain). Destination: Paris, Gare de Lyon. From now on, the 900 km. between Figueres and Paris will be done in 5 hours and 30 minutes. That same day, and from those same railway stations, two people started a simultaneos walking action. At the exact moment when the inaugural train departed, Pau Faus walked out from the Gare de Lyon (Paris, France) and started walking towards Figueres. At the same time, Pere Grimau walked out from Vilafant railway station (Figueres, Spain) and started walking towards Paris. Every 5 minutes both repeated simultaneously the same action: they stopped, they made a frontal picture of the place they were at, and they continued walking on their direction. The new temporal distance between Figueres and Paris framed the length of this double journey. 5 hours and 30 minutes later, when the train reached its destination, both walkers took their last picture and ended the journey wherever they were. During that time, each of them walked approximately what a highspeed train travels in 5 minutes”.

BOOK#005 CONCRETE GEOGRAPHIES [NOMADS] Xavier Ribas 2012
CONCRETE GEOGRAPHIES [NOMADS] :: Xavier Ribas author_ Xavier Ribas editors_ Bside Books + Xavier Ribas design_ Bside Books year_ 2012
“On the 24th of February 2004, heavy machinery entered an empty industrial plot in Barcelona occupied by some sixty Gypsy families. Over a few days two diggers drilled and lifted up the concrete floor of the site, intimidating the Gypsies and finally pushing them out. They left behind a contorted surface, like a horizontal wall, to protect the site and keep it empty. This method of dissuasion demonstrates the economic value of violence and destruction in order to control space. The broken ground, the fissures and fragments of concrete slabs standing up like remnants of ancient Mayan stelae give testimony, still today, of this displacement.”
Nomads is the first of five photographic works of Xavier Ribas’ Concrete Geographies series to be published by Bside Books in individual books. Concrete Geographies comprises a number of photographic works dealing with the politics of space as this becomes visible in specific locations: a disused industrial site in the city of Barcelona from which a Gypsy community was violently displaced (Nomads), the site of a Maya village in Guatemala buried under a mud slide (Mud), the overgrown edges of an archaeological site (Invisible Structures), or the semifuctional ruin of a neighbourhood in Barcelona about to be demolished prior redevelopment (LC). The majority of the works take the form of photographic grids or installations, and incorporate text and location maps that provide historical context.

All participants brought photographs in relation to the idea of “territory”.
