marc nozeman Mark Nozeman studied history (HBO) but graduated at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts on documentary photography (1998/BFA/cum laude). Works & live for the last ten years in Amsterdam. His portfolio contains portraits, editorials and commercials for different kind of media. Midsummer time in Lapland
During midsummer the Lapland Artic municipality of Kemijarvi seems to be even more deserted then it ever was. Mark Nozeman stayed here photographing boys and girls who spent their holidays drinking, hanging around and driving circles their old rusty German cars, pimped up Japanese horsepowers and classic Americans. Late in the evening they gathering around in Kemijjarvi’s central open spots, parking lots and gas stations driving the same circles for hours, listen up beat music and smoking cigarettes, picking up friends and the luckiest, some girls .They even give the ritual a name;… ….‘Huru’…. Let’s be honest, the place doesn’t offer more then estimated five filling stations, four supermarkets, three camping shops and some restaurant bar. The landscape is filled with forests and lakes. No potential interesting jobs and economic decline as in the rest of Europe. In the hotel bar you can join the friday evenings karaoke contest while white blond kids stare at you with there big blue eyes. Some in the pub say that the Fins only believe in two things; Santa Claus and Satan. Both are probably living in Lapland.
Lorsque arrive l’été, la commune de Kemijarvi en Laponie Arctique, est encore plus déserte que jamais. Mark Nozeman y a photographié les garçons et les filles qui ont passé leurs vacances à boire, à traîner en rond avec leurs vieilles voitures allemandes rouillées. Tard dans la soirée, ils se rassembler autour de Kemijjarvi dans des endroits ouverts, des parkings, des stations essences entraînant les mêmes discussions pendant des heures, écoutant la même musique en fumant des cigarettes, les plus chanceux étant ceux qui ont ramené des filles. Ils ont donné un nom à ce rituel ... ... ‘Huru’ ..... L’endroit n’offre pas plus de cinq stations essence, quatre supermarchés, trois magasins de camping et des bar-restaurants, des paysages de lacs et de forêts à perte de vue; aucune offre d’emploi intéressante et le déclin économique comme partout en Europe. Dans le bar de l’hôtel, vous pouvez participer au concours de karaoké le vendredi soir, tandis que des enfants blonds vous regardent avec de grands yeux bleus. Ici, certains disent que les Finlandais ne croient qu’en deux choses: le Père Noël et Satan. Les deux vivent probablement en Laponie.
