RESEARCH EXERCISE 01: Point/Line/Plane

Architecture Design Studio: EarthW

Initial Model

This initial cardboard model focused on exploring the relation between ground plane and elevated plane. It consists of two large triangular planes which act as the main support for the elevated podium. On top of the two triangular forms are various planes which explore different heights. Due to the acute angle at which the form leans, it is held up at the front by two smaller triangular supports. The use of triangular shapes is to explore the principle of point/line/plane, with the triangular form starting at a point, then widening through the lines of the shape’s edges to form the Architecture Design Studio: plane.

Analysis and Design Development

After reviewing the design of the initial model, I decided that the section highlighted in red made the design too complicated and detracted the main focus of the design, which was to explore the way the ground plane changed into elevated plane. The form of the podium was intended to create the illusion of the ground “peeling off and rising into the form of the elevated podium. Hence, I simplified the design into the basic form of the two large triangular supports and the angled platform.

Analysis and Design Development

I also decided that the two small triangular supports could be substituted or placed elsewhere on the design in a way that does not detract from the way the design is supposed to replicate the ground plane “peeling. Hence I decided to place two triangular planes on either side of the platform which cover up the gaps between the platform and the large triangular forms. Not only do these help support the podium, they also help enhance the form and smooth the transition between flat ground plane and the sloped podium.
