PE Policy
Our over-arching Teaching and Learning Policy explains in detail how the curriculum is delivered at Blandford St Mary. This policy focuses upon the specific qualities, the key skills and concepts that Physical Education (PE) contributes to this. We believe PE . . . . . . Promotes the physical and personal development of our children. Provides opportunities for progression, challenge and a sense of achievement. Enables children to excel in a non-verbal way. Provides enrichment to the quality of life, both within and beyond school. Encourages positive attitudes in the development of confidence and the appreciation of individual strengths and weaknesses. We therefore provide opportunities for children to: Develop their potential skills, in order to take part effectively in a variety of activities. Be involved, where appropriate, in planning activities at their own level. Develop their observation skills in order to make constructive and informed comments both on their own work and the work of others. Foster an awareness of and respect for safe practice in all aspects of PE. Work co-operatively by encouraging good sporting behaviour. Appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle, thus acting as a springboard for a healthy adult lifestyle. These aims are delivered through a range of activities including, gymnastics, games, dance, athletics and outdoor games and adventurous activities. Each class is timetabled two hours of curriculum time per week dedicated to PE. Our Physical Activity Policy compliments this PE curriculum. QCA schemes form the basis of our teaching, supported by the TOPS activity cards. Longer term, key skills are identified on the curriculum map. Extra curricular clubs, support the curriculum for both key stages. Local tournaments are attended, including football and country dancing. Sporting achievements outside of school are celebrated within the weekly ‘Special Assembly’. To implement our philosophy of inclusion it is ensured that every child in our school is able to access and enjoy a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum regardless of age, gender or ability, with regard to ethnic background, their beliefs and their cultural traditions.
