Sun Know How Policy
SUN KNOW HOW POLICY The Governors of Blandford St Mary CEVA Primary School place an absolute priority on ensuring the safety of its pupils. In acknowledgement of the increasing danger of skin cancer which children face, and in acknowledgement of the role which this school can play in protecting children from the danger, the Governors have adopted the following policy:
Sun Safety Staff The School will ensure - both teaching and non-teaching staff - are fully aware of the sun protection guidelines: Avoid exposure to the sun during the period between 11am and 3pm Take care not to burn Cover up and wear a hat Staff should, whilst on official duties, follow the protection guidelines, and should act as good role models. Pupils Wherever reasonably possible, sun awareness and sun safety issues will be incorporated within the curriculum areas. Parents Where appropriate, parents/guardians will be provided with information on skin care, skin cancer and preventative strategies. They will be encouraged to ensure that their children are equipped for protection from the sun. Wider Community Where possible, the School will use its influence within the wider community to ensure the awareness of the Sun Know How guidelines.
Uniform In reviews of the School's uniform and clothing guidelines, consideration will be given to sun protection issues.
Shade The School will make provision for adequate shaded areas within the school grounds during lunch and break periods. During lunch this will be provided through the use of gazebos. Outdoor Activities Where possible, PE lessons and other outdoor activities will be timetabled so as to avoid exposure during the middle of the day. Where this is not possible, particular attention will be paid to the use of sunscreens and appropriate clothing. Parents will be asked to support these measures. Attention will be paid to the guidelines when school outing, sports days, and other such events are planned. Sunscreens The use of sunscreens will be encouraged and children will be able to bring in their own sunscreens to use through the day. Parents will be asked to identify children who may have an allergic reaction. First Aid Staff should be confident about their ability to deal with sunburn, and should: Move the casualty into the shade - preferably indoors Cool the skin by sponging with tepid water Give frequent sips of cold water Medical advice should be sought if there is blistering or other skin damage; or if there is dizziness or vomiting.
