orientation concept of creating a “case” of triangles to hold the book came from the initial triangle excavation which in turn lead to the triangle piece in conjoin - the challenge then became the orientation in which it would “suspend” on the site

we immediately noticed the strong, large geometric shapes present within our space (mainly triangles and sqaures), there was also a anthropometric aspect of the space (within the triangle on the side of the stairs, under the stairs, and in the larger area). we also conducted a short study to analyse the angles of shadows casted at different times of the day (15-minute intervals) we also noticed the huge difference in size between the small space and the large space

exploration of 4 main concpets: (01) the fracturing of the triangle formed by the stair case within the space and combining the surrounding color palette of space (02) the shapes created by the shadows made during the 15-minute intervals (03) the idea of anthropometry within the triangular under side of the stairs whilst incorporating sound traveling from a person inhabiting the space (04) the idea of light bouncing around

concept 01 following the ideas of the fractured triangles and reflective material structure wrapping and coming out of the under side of the stair case

concept 02 hanging strings from the under side of the stair case with triangular-shaped reflective material at random intervals

concept 03 plaster cast of rebar structure currently present in the space; pieces hung next to each other - to show the absence of existence

initial formation idea radiating from one single point at the top and expanding to the bottom stair case + radiating from one single point at the bottom of the space and expanding up to the bottom stair case

re-formation idea after discussing some possible re-formation ideas since the single point was proving to be problematic; we decided to go with a more linear approach and tie from each upright in the upper stair case to the uprights in the lower stair case

the biggest challenge with the design was figuring out how to reinforce the plaster + how to directly cast it onto the hanging wire. after trial + error, we found the best method was just string the hanging wire through wire mesh (which would act as a form of rebar) and then cast the plaster on top

This quarter has been a long + tough haul, but i’ve truly enjoyed every second of it. i’ve really appreciated a different point of view in humberto’s studio - there has been more of a focus on drawing + anthropometric study and it has lead me to start really enjoying sketching and to take notice of everything and the way the human body interacts with objects. by far my favorite project of the quarter was slipcase. i truly enjoyed working with such precision and paying such close attention to simplicity + detail. however, paraSITE challenged me to start thinking more site specific + understand the occupation of space. i am excited to see where the next quarter takes me and my design skills. i know i have truly made the right decision in coming to cal poly and studying architecture. i would like to thank my parents + brother, the brothers of alpha rho chi + charlie, humberto and my roommates for their continued support of my endeavors in the field of architecture salut! brianna ashley tramontano
