HYGGE (hue-gah): untranslatable word of Danish origin, loosely meaning a feeling of warmth, simplicity, happiness, security, familiarity, comfort + reassurance
mission: to provide familiarity + security while strengthening community + promoting growth.
TRANSITIONS MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION eliminating stigma promoting recovery + wellness vital independent living skills build a framework for community re-entry personal empowerment hands-on experience
Hygge, an untranslatable Danish word, loosely translates to a feeling of warmth, familiarity and security – a feeling everyone should feel, especially the clients of Transitions Mental Health Association. Those suffering from mental illness and homelessness need this feeling more than most. According to the World Health Organization’s intervention pyramid, the highest need of those suffering from mental illness is security and the social considerations in basic services. These needs can be addressed first and foremost with architecture. I hope to provide familiarity and security while strengthening community and promoting growth. I wanted to address this by giving the clients a “home” rather than a “housing unit” and to allow community to thrive in the spaces in-between. To achieve this, I developed a housing module that creates a customizable home rather than stacked up housing units. The shape of these modules coincides with those in the surrounding neighborhood in an attempt to create familiarity for not only the clients, but those who may still view mental health with an implied stigma. The connection between the modules is a private greenhouse for clients to cultivate their own food and to cultivate personal relationships with the community around them. Furthermore, the main building was converted into a public greenhouse to connect with the public of San Luis Obispo, the rest of TMHA, and to promote personal and literal growth. The goods grown in the public greenhouse will be sold in a farm to table shop adjacent to the greenhouse as well as at the downtown farmer’s market furthering the relationship with the community of San Luis Obispo. The relationship between the commerce from the greenhouse and the commerce from TMHA’s other ventures including Growing Grounds will be able to further fund programs for their clients. Finally, personal growth comes from finding stability in work, which I hope to do through the greenhouse, farm to table shop, and kitchen / café. I developed the kitchen / café to be an open format to bring lightness to the space, as well as allowing a bigger presence from the community to be made possible.

TMHA supplies those in need with a home and a job creating vital independent living skills, which allows the residents to participate in the hygge of the building and the program, while producing goods and money for themselves as well as for TMHA to continue the life cycle with new clients and generations on the way to eliminating the stigma of mental illnesses.
