MIXED LEVEL WHEEL THROWING

Prerequisite: Wheel throwing experience required.

Mixed Level Wheel supports students across a range of skill and experience levels who have thrown on the wheel. This eight-week course is rooted in fundamentals and encourages individual projects. Demonstrations and instruction will cover centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing, as well as forms and techniques determined by students. Class price includes your first bag of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. All glazes and firings are also included.

HANDBUILDING

Learn the basics of hand building to help you create functional and sculptural forms from clay. Class includes an introduction to our clay studio’s equipment and tools, along with helpful demonstrations and discussions. This introduction to screen printing shows students how to design and print t-shirts, posters, fine art, and more. Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic, or borrowed imagery. Students learn how to apply photo emulsion, use an exposure unit, and print on a variety of surfaces. Class price includes the use of studio equipment, emulsion, transparencies, and ink, as well as open studio access during the weeks of the class. Students can bring their own screens or rent one through the studio. No experience necessary

TIE DYE WORKSHOP

Saturday, July 22, 2023, 11 am-2 pm

Try the colorful and satisfying art of tie dye with local craftswoman Kara Ware. Kara will lead you through the steps of tie dyeing, including tying di erent designs and dyeing fabrics with a rainbow of colors. Each student will leave with a dyed t-shirt and tote bag provided by BCA. Students are also welcome to bring two or three other items to dye. Details of items that work well will be emailed to students before class. All other basic materials included. Please bring a bag lunch.

Demystify Adobe Photoshop and create the digital images you envision! This class starts with the basics of the Photoshop toolbox and will cover exposure and color corrections, working with layers and masks to edit selectively, removing and adding content within images, appropriately sizing files for print or the web, and printing on BCA's Epson inkjet printer. Bring a selection of digital image files or scanned negative files on a Mac-compatible flash or hard drive to the first class. No experience necessary. Digital Lab open studio hours are included during the weeks of your class.

Explore the traditional, analog black and white darkroom. Students learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. All 35mm film, paper, and darkroom supplies are included, as well as access to darkroom open studio during the weeks of class. Students can bring their own manual 35mm or medium format film camera or inquire with kwilliams@burlingtoncityarts.org about borrowing one from the studio (please note: cameras are limited).

In this one-day workshop, students create one-of-a-kind photo prints using solar power and plants as inspiration, tools, and materials. Together, students will explore natural areas around Burlington, collecting flowers and weeds to make Lumen prints with the power of the sun. The photo process of Cyanotype will also be explored to make beautiful designs on fabric for wall hangings. No experience is needed and all basic materials are provided. Students should bring a bag lunch, bottle of water and dress for walking outside. If needed, class will be scheduled on the rain date of July 30.

Cities, even small ones like ours, are an endless source of artistic inspiration. From the architecture of unique houses to everyday overlooked objects, learn to capture the look and feel of a place through quick drawing techniques. Local artist and teacher Frances Cannon will lead you through sketching demonstrations that include proportions, compositions, light, shading, and crosshatching. Using pencil, pen, marker, or charcoal, fill your sketchbook with your unique perspective and stories from walks through the Pine Street neighborhood of Burlington. All supplies are included. Students should be prepared to draw outside on summer evenings, wearing appropriate footwear for walking. In case of bad weather, class will meet inside the studio.

PASTEL WORKSHOP

Spend a day in our drawing and painting studio experimenting with versatile and colorful pastels. In this fun workshop, discover basic drawing and blending techniques to create an abstract or realistic piece on paper that you’ll be excited to bring home. All basic materials included. No experience necessary. Students should bring a bag lunch.
