SUMMER CAMP CATALOG | 2023 LA

Join us this summer at BCA Studios and work closely with professional teaching artists for a full week of in-depth studio arts experience.

Every camp includes high-quality art materials and a final showing of work. Come for a half-day or pair a morning and afternoon camp together to make a full-day experience. A supervised lunch break is provided from 11 am to 12 pm for campers staying all day.

Need a longer camp day? Join our Aftercare Art Club from 3-5 pm for an extended camp experience, which features sketch book time, visits to Pine Street hot spots, and other fun art activities. More time to explore and make! 2023 SUMMER

From paper mâché to tie dye, this mixed media camp is all about classic DIY arts and crafts. Using a variety of mediums, create fun projects that spark creativity and encourage personal expression while learning new techniques. *Pair this with POTTERY for a full-day experience.

DARKROOM PHOT0 AGES 9-11

Experience the magic of a traditional photographic darkroom! In this camp, students go on guided photo shoots in the South End of Burlington with our manual 35mm SLR film cameras and learn how to print their own photographs in our black and white darkroom. *Pair this with COMICS or SCREEN PRINT for a full-day experience.

JEWELRY AGES 6-8

Paper beads, glass beads, clay beads and more! Learn how to make jewelry with all different kinds of materials. Campers learn how to attach clasps, use beading tools, and make their own beads and pendants. By the end of the week, campers will have earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more to share or keep. *Pair this with POTTERY for a full-day experience.

Learn surface design and decorating tips to make your pieces amazing. All items will be dishwasher-safe and lead-free. Working in BCA’s professional print studio, students learn to apply photo emulsion, use a silkscreen exposure unit, and print images using water-based inks. Learn design and drawing tricks to take your comics to the next level. Campers look at a variety of illustrators and comics styles before incorporating special design elements into their work. Campers also discover how to enhance their comics by learning about layouts, lettering, and figure drawing techniques. By the end of the week, students will have created their own storyline and comic strips to share. *Pair this with POTTERY or DARKROOM PHOTO for a full-day experience.

Take your favorite drawings, photos, and designs and print them onto t-shirts, bags, posters, and more! Campers learn basic sewing techniques and use simple patterns to cut and create their own stuffies out of various sewing materials, including cottons, rickrack, yarns, ribbons, buttons, puffy fabric paints, and more. Create one-of-a-kind t-shirts using a variety of construction methods such as appliqué, embroidery, fabric dying, screen printing, and upcycling of old clothes. Students learn basic hand sewing techniques and take turns on the sewing machine. All materials are provided, but campers are also invited to bring in old t-shirts that they want to reinvent. *Pair this with DARKROOM PHOTO for a full-day experience.

THE ART OF SCENIC DESIGN WITH LYRIC THEATRE

COMPANY AGES 12-18 Discover the intersection between the visual and performing arts in this new camp experience offered in collaboration with Lyric Theatre Company. Working with a BCA teaching artist and a Lyric designer, students will learn painting techniques and apply their understanding of scenic construction and decoration to bring the streets of Paris alive for the LyricKids camp production of Disney’s The Aristocats KIDS. This week culminates in a celebration of campers working both on-stage and off at the LyricKids final performance on Friday afternoon. Go beyond 35mm film and discover the history and skills of camera-less techniques from the early origins of photography. Whether looking to expand their knowledge of the medium or to learn a new way of photographic printing, this camp introduces students to using photo chemistry, natural materials and dyes, and the sun as a main light source to learn alternative photographic processes including cyanotypes, anthotypes, and lumens.*Pair this with DIGITAL PHOTO for a full-day experience.

Explore the fundamentals of circus artistry and physical comedy while embracing the power of play! In collaboration with Vermont’s own Circus Smirkus, instructors for this unique camp focus on the inclusive fun that is found within ourselves. From pantomime, juggling, balancing acts, and impersonations, students gain confidence in who they are and what they are capable of. The camp culminates on Friday with a Festival of Fools performance on the top block of Church Street. Drop-off & Pick-Up: BCA Center, 135 Church St.

At the end of the week, students will have an array of printed items to wear or share. BCA provides one t-shirt and poster paper. Students are encouraged to bring other surfaces to print on as well. *Pair this with POTTERY for a full-day experience.

METAL JEWELRY AGES 12-18

Use professional jewelry tools to make rings, pendants, and bracelets with brass and silver. Learn basic jewelry techniques including sawing, filing, soldering, texturing, ring sizing, and more. Beads and other craft techniques enhance your wearable art. Lead-free solder and safe-flux are used during the camp. *Pair this with POTTERY for a full-day experience.

REFUNDS

Refunds can only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the camp. 15% of your registration fee is non-refundable. After the two-week window, a class credit will be processed at the discretion of the education director. Class credits are nonrefundable. A full refund will be given if BCA has to cancel a camp.
