HEAD COACH STEVE FARLEY Welcome To Butler baseball!

What an honor it has been for me to be a part of this program for the past 18 seasons. Eleven Bulldog baseball coaches have gone before me, including Butler legend Tony Hinkle. Our current coaching staff and players will continue to work hard to uphold Butler’s winning tradition and to keep the program strong for those future players and coaches who will wear the Blue & White!

During my tenure at Butler, I’ve seen Bulldog players travel to Australia to play in international competition. I’ve witnessed major facility upgrades, including a new press box, scoreboard, irrigation system and newest upgrade… an indoor hitting and pitching building. I’ve seen Butler players participate in community service projects, including serving meals to the homeless at Wheeler Mission and volunteering as mentors for local elementary school children.

In my 18 years, I’ve coached well over 200 players. These student-athletes have led Butler to five regular season or conference tournament championships and two NCAA regionals. Former Bulldogs Pat Neshek (Twins) and Dan Johnson (Rays) are playing in the Major Leagues. Just as importantly, I’ve seen countless players graduate with a quality degree and move on to become successful doctors, lawyers, teachers and businessmen.

While we will continue to set our sights on winning the Horizon League Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, our greater commitment will be to develop and prepare our student-athletes for a successful life after graduation. We anticipate that The Butler Way will follow them throughout their career, both on and off the field.

I hope you enjoy this media guide. May it serve as a tool to familiarize you with our program and our proud heritage. When you review it, I think you will see why we are excited about Bulldog Baseball!

Welcome To

BUTLER!

The five faculty and 113 students present when Butler University opened in 1855 laid a solid foundation for more than 150 years of creative change and progress. Today’s 4,200 students carry on that legacy, as they continue to look ahead while treasuring the traditions unique to Butler.

The young school, originally named North Western Christian University, was unusually innovative. It was the first in Indiana, and only the third in the nation, to admit women on an equal basis with men. With the appointment in 1858 of Catherine Merrill as Demia Butler Professor of English, the institution became the second in the country to appoint a woman faculty member, the first to establish an endowed chair specifically for a female professor and the first to establish a professorship in English literature. The school was also the first in Indiana to allow its students, with parental consent, to choose subjects suited to their needs under a new “elective” system.

As Indianapolis grew, the city’s commercial district began to penetrate the heavily-wooded campus at what is now the corner of Thirteenth Street and College Avenue. In 1873, the board of directors decided to sell the downtown campus and accept a gift of 25 acres in Irvington, then a suburb east of Indianapolis. In 1877, North Western Christian University became Butler University, taking the name of its founder and benefactor, Indianapolis attorney Ovid Butler.

Butler moved again 50 years later, as the “Circle City” continued to grow. In 1928, classes were held for the first time in Jordan Hall, an imposing new Gothic structure erected on the beautiful Fairview Park Site, a wooded tract north of the city on the White River and the Inland Waterway Canal.

Today’s students come from nearly every state in the nation and from many foreign countries to enroll in degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or in one of four professional colleges -- Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts or Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Butler is one of only 21 private schools in the country offering a pharmacy program.

True to the vision of its founders, the University continues to offer an array of professional and pre-professional programs within the context of a strong commitment to the traditional arts and sciences and to the values of liberal education. Butler continues to welcome highly motivated, intellectually curious men and women, and to prepare them for lives of professional and community service and creative, ethical action. Butler is one of the top 20 US colleges for producing business executives, is in the top 10% for preparing future Ph.D.s and is located in the No. 2 city for college graduates starting a career.

Although the thriving city of Indianapolis has once again grown to surround Butler University, the 290-acre campus remains a serenely beautiful area with 20 buildings, playing fields, a formal botanical garden, and a nature preserve surrounded by well-established residential communities. Opportunity, Hospitality & SPORTS! Just when it seemed the sporting scene in Indianapolis couldn’t get any better, it did! Long recognized as the “Amateur Sports Capitol of the World”, Indianapolis is in the midst of another sports explosion.

From the Indiana Pacers to the Final Four, Peyton Manning and the Super Bowl Champion Colts to the spectacular Victory Field, the Butler Bulldogs, the NCAA, and Conseco Fieldhouse, everywhere you turn sports are booming!

It’s not surprising. Sports have played a key role in the development of the Hoosier state capital. Indianapolis gained an international reputation as host of the largest single-day sporting event in the world - the Indianapolis 500. In fact, the city hosts the two largest single-day sporting events in the world - the Indy 500 and the All-State 400 at the Brickyard. Indianapolis hosted the Pan American Games in 1987, the NCAA Men’s Final Four in 1980, 1991, 1997, 2000 and 2006, the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2005, the World Gymnastics Championship in 1991, the World Rowing Championships in 1994, the World Basketball Championship in 2002, the World Swimming Championship in 2004, has hosted Olympic trials in swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming, Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the Indianapolis Colts and the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final national championships in gymnastics, boxing, track and field, rowing, Four, opened to rave reviews in August of 2008.

The Indiana Fever advanced to the WNBA Finals for the first time, coming one game from winning the title.

The Indianapolis 500 is dubbed as the largest single-day sporting event in the world.

The brand new 63,000 seat Lucas Oil Stadium is home to the Indianapolis Colts and will host the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. The Indiana Pacers play in the 18,500-seat Conseco Fieldhouse. The city is home to the Indiana University Natatorium, featuring one of the fastest swimming pools in the world, the state-of-the-art National Institute for Fitness and Sport, the Indianapolis Tennis Center which houses 24 tennis courts and an 8,000-seat stadium, the 12,500-seat IU Track and Field Stadium, the Major Taylor Velodrome, historic Hinkle Fieldhouse and Victory Field.

Life At Butler

Academic Support/Student Development

Balancing the demands of NCAA Division I athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule is one of the biggest challenges facing Butler’s student-athletes.

To help meet that challenge, Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Offices are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the staff is available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and nonacademic problems. Butler offers its more than 300 student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/coach request basis.

Strong academics has continued to be a trademark of the Butler baseball team, as seven baseball players were named to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll in 2008 by maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average during the careers.

Apartment Village

First opened for the fall of 2006, the Apartment Village is located in the heart of the Butler athletic facilities. The apartments sit directly east of the Butler Bowl (home to the Butler football and soccer teams) and are within a short walk of Hinkle Fieldhouse (basketball and volleyball), Bulldog Park (baseball) and the Butler Bubble (tennis).

Each apartment has four private bedrooms with individual locks, two bathrooms, a full kitchen with dishwasher, dispossal, microwave and a breakfast island with four stools.

Bedroom furnishings - including single bed, dresser and desk - are also provided. The units are also air conditioned with a shared phone line with four private voice mailboxes, cable TV and internet access.

The Dawg House, located in the middle of the village, features a convenience store, game room, mailboxes, computer lab, laundry facilities and two study rooms.

Conditioning and Training Strength & Conditioning

All of Butler’s athletes benefit from an extensive strength and conditioning program under the direction of strength and conditioning coordinator Jim Peal and assistant Ross Bowsher. The purpose of Butler’s program is to decrease injury potential, while increasing performance potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses flexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed.

The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000 square-foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes and stairmasters.

Sports Medicine

Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that concentrates on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of baseball team trainer Penny Goldberg, Butler athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certified athletic trainers.

Butler’s expanded training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse. Renovation in the summer of 1998 effectively tripled the usable area devoted to the care and welfare of Butler’s student-athletes.

Butler’s athletic staff provides care for Butler athletes at practices and games. The staff also works to educate Butler student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues.

Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation.

Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine.

Health & Recreation Complex

Butler’s newly constructed Health & Recreation Complex (HRC) is located right next door to Hinkle Fieldhouse. The facility features a pool, weight room, running track and a two-court gymnasium.

Butler Bubble

During Butler’s cold weather practice period (mid-January through mid-February), the Bulldogs go indoors to train in the Butler Bubble, the university’s 32,000 square foot indoor facility.

The bubble is also used for winter baseball camps.

BULLDOG PARK

Home of the Bulldogs

New turf and dirt was installed on the infield of Bulldog Park last fall.

Bulldog Park serves as the home of the Butler baseball team. Located just behind Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Butler Bowl, Bulldog Park provides a nostalgic setting for collegiate baseball, with seating for up to 500 spectators and a fully functional press box. The field features symmetrical dimensions, stretching 330 feet down both lines, 370 feet to the gaps and an even 400 feet to the batter’s eye in dead center. The Butler dugout stretches along the third-base line with the visitors situated along first. The bullpens are located in foul territory in both corners of the outfield.

The field has undergone major renovations during the past year that included a new pitcher’s mound and home plate area, new laser-graded dirt and top dressing on the infield and the removal of lips and uneven edges. Additionally, new sod has been added around the first base, third base, home plate and pitcher’s mound areas, as well as other places in the infield that receive the heaviest wear.

The crown jewel of the renovation project will be a 6,000 square foot multi-purpose hitting facility to be located in foul territory down the left field line. The building will feature four turfed indoor batting cages, indoor pitching mounds, pitching machines, drill stations and a bathroom.

Butler Baseball At Victory Field The Bulldogs usually play one regular season game each year at Victory Field, home of the AAA Indianapolis Indians. This year’s game will take place on March 31 against Dayton. Located in downtown Indianapolis and just a short drive from campus, the field was named “the best minor league ballpark in America” by Baseball America.

Butler hosted the 2005 Horizon League Baseball Championship at the ballpark, and the field is tabbed to host the tournament again in 2012.

Baseball Facilities Butler Indoor Hitting Facility Completed in the fall of 2009, the baseball Hitting Facility is located in foul territory down the left field line at Bulldog Park. The 6,000 square foot multi-purpose complex features four turfed indoor batting cages and pitching mounds, pitching machines, drill stations and a bathroom.

The indoor facility, which allows Butler to train among the nation’s best, is the crown jewel in what has been numerous upgrades for the baseball program. In 2009, the Bulldogs received new dugout benches courtesy of Jeff Waggoner. The project also included new helmet and bat racks and individual storage space.

Other recent upgrades include four new bullpen mounds built by former Butler player Matt Crews as well as new warning track material and new infield sod.

The indoor facility is also utilized by the Butler golf, softball and track teams.

2010 Team Outlook GETTING BACK ON TRACK

man due to injury, shows great potential as a hitter. Padove appeared in 14 games a year ago and made great strides as the catcher for the summer national champion Crystal Lake Cardinals in Illinois.

“Mike has improved as a blocker, and Brian had a great summer as the catcher on a college summer team that won a national championship. With Nick back healthy again, we think we have three solid players at the catcher position.”

All of the returning players have another year of experience and seasoning.

Add a mix of talented newcomers, and the Bulldogs are aiming to get back to their winning ways.

There are no fancy themes with the 2010 edition of the Butler baseball program. No mottos, no slogans. The message: compete every day, get back to winning and regain the respect Butler has built over the last 100 years.

“We need to get back to playing winning baseball,” head coach Steve Farley said. “Having the indoor hitting facility complete has given our players a renewed sense of optimism about our program. Still, we have to go out and compete every day.”

It’s no secret that the winter is no ally to college baseball in the north. That’s why Butler has made the commitment to overcome that obstacle and give the Bulldogs a facility that puts them on par with any program in the Midwest.

Despite the lack of success on the scoreboard last season, the 2010 Butler squad does have the advantage of playing at a school with a storied tradition of championships and NCAA berths. Farley, entering his 19th season with the Bulldogs and the longest-tenured skipper in the Horizon League, guided a program that won just 18 games in his first season at BU to a league championship just four years later and three more titles the following decade.

The following is a breakdown of the 2010 Butler baseball team: Pitchers Butler saw four of its top six pitchers from last season graduate, but the Bulldogs have eight returnees and a top pitching recruit on the pitching staff.

The team’s top arm from a year ago, junior Jared Wagoner, returns and is a team co-captain this season.

Wagoner made 17 appearances last season, leading the team with a 5.59 ERA and striking out 46 in 58.0 innings of work.

Junior Grant Fillipitch, Butler’s Team MVP a year ago, will start at third base this season. He hit .302 with seven home runs last season.

Sophomore Mike Hernandez led the team in wins (3), innings (70.1) and strikeouts (59) last season.

BU’s top recruit, freshman Kyle Kramp also figures to start a lot of ballgames in 2010. Kramp, who led Westfield High School to the 4A IHSAA State Finals, was named IHSBCA Player of the Year last year and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants.

Sophomore Mike Hernandez will also enter the season in the starting rotation. The right-hander had a stellar freshman season, leading the team in innings pitched (70.1), strikeouts (59) and wins (3). For his efforts, he was voted to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team.

Senior Joe Ochs, the team’s only lefty, is the fourth Bulldog to enter the season as a starter. Ochs battled through some injuries last season and is aiming to regain the form he had in 2008, when he went 3-1 and had 20 strikeouts against six walks.

Farley will be counting on seniors Jamie Feldheiser and Tyler Szymczak to handle the late innings. Feldheiser made 15 appearances last year and picked up a pair of wins. Szymczak tied for the team lead with 17 appearances (16 in relief) in 2009.

Other relievers returning include juniors Dom Slivestri and David Dennemann and sophomore Ryan Salvino.

“Dennemann and Silvestri are capable of taking their games to the next level this season,” Farley said.

Salvino missed much of last season with injuries and made just six appearances last season, but should be ready to go this season.

The Bulldogs also have a group of talented freshmen pitchers who will see innings this season. The group includes: Jared Earle, Joel Leichty, Billy Laing and David Suffern. Farley also cites freshman walk-on Chase Byerly as having a good work ethic and that he will also compete for relief innings.

Catchers The Bulldogs have three solid and capable players behind the plate in junior Michael Letzter and sophomore Nick Hladek and Brian Padove.

“All three of these guys have D-I arms and each player is capable of being a solid leader for us behind the plate,” Farley said.

Letzter, who hit .289 with three home runs last season, enters the spring as the starting backstop. The junior scored 24 runs and drove in 20 more last year, but it’s his improved defense that may prove most valuable.

Infielders The infield will have several new faces this season, with newcomers seeing time and also returning players moving to different positions around the diamond.

Junior Grant Fillipitch, who was voted Butler’s team MVP and offensive player of the year last year, is the leading returning infielder and will start at third base. Fillipitch hit .302 with a team-best seven homers, 32 runs, 30 RBIs and 17 doubles. Freshman Bob Akin enters the spring as the primary back-up at third base.

Senior Kyle Schultz will move from third base to first base this season. Schultz, who hit .268 with 10 doubles and 29 RBIs last season, will also get some at-bats in the DH spot. Butler has three other capable players who may see time at first, including sophomore Mike Hoscheit and freshmen Jack Dillon and Pat Gelwicks. Hoscheit can also serves as a DH. Another returnee making a position change, junior Luke Duncan, will start at second base after playing in the outfield last year. Duncan led the Bulldogs in batting average (.308) and triples (4) last season while scoring 25 runs and driving in 22. Entering the spring, senior Bobby Mosser will be the primary back-up at second base. Farley says Duncan may also see time in the outfield depending on how the season progresses.

Newcomer Jack Krause is the team’s starting shortstop. Krause, a junior college transfer from Triton College, has shown solid defensive play during the fall and preseason workouts.

Krause’s back-up at short will be sophomore Griffin Richeson, who appeared in 40 games last season.

Richeson is a versatile utility player who can also play at second base and third base.

Outfielders The starting outfield the Bulldogs have to enter the season is comprised of three newcomers, and a freshman who will see plenty of time at a corner outfield spot. Don’t let the new faces fool you; there is plenty of talent roaming the outfield for BU this season.

Entering the season, junior Kyle Waggoner appears to have the edge to start in left. Waggoner transferred to Butler this year from Indiana University. He was an all-state player at Indy-area powerbouse Brownsburg High School.

Along with Waggoner, freshman Andrew Eckhardt will also see time in left field. “They both hit from the left side and have shown the ability to get on base and make things happen,” Farley said.

Junior Corey Moylan, a transfer from the University of Vermont, will be the starter in center. After Vermont dropped baseball last year, Moylan brings his speed and potent bat to Butler. The Illinois native hit .312 with four homers, 34 RBIs and 12 stolen bases last year.

Another newcomer, Parkland Junior College transfer Kevin Crane, will start the season in right field. Crane was a second-team JUCO All-American at Parkland and hit .352 last year, leading the team to the NJCAA Division II national title.

Coaching Staff Head Coach Steve Farley Minnesota, 1981 • 19th Season Head coach Steve Farley has become synonymous with the Butler baseball program, as the long-time Bulldog mentor enters his 19th season in Indianapolis in 2010. The baseball veteran begins his 22nd season as a college head coach with with 493 wins on his resume, including a school-record 440 while at Butler.

He has continued to lead the Bulldogs to consistent success in the Horizon League during his tenure, guiding the team to a pair of NCAA Tournament bids and five appearances in the league championship game since 1998.

Teams under his direction have broken Butler’s school record for victories three times, while eight of the program’s highest single-season win totals have come under his tutelage. A four-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, Farley has had 62 players earn all-conference honors, and 25 of his former players have signed professional baseball contracts, including current Minnesota Twins hurler Pat Neshek.

Farley guided the Bulldogs to the brink of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006, scoring a pair of wins over regular-season champion UIC in the Horizon League Tournament to advance to the championship game before falling short to host Wright State.

Butler’s baseball program has flourished under Farley in the last decade, as the Bulldogs captured conference regular season championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999 and league tournament titles in 1998 and 2000. In 1998, the Bulldogs visited Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete in the NCAA Play-In series against Oral Roberts, and in 2000 Butler captured the Horizon League’s automatic bid to the NCAA National Baseball Championship. In 2002 and 2003, Farley guided the Bulldogs to a school-record 34 victories, Butler’s third and fourth 30-win seasons in a six-year span.

Farley’s success hasn’t been limited to wins and losses. Thanks to his efforts in collecting donations from alumni and other benefactors, Bulldog Park has gone from an average playing facility to a top-notch baseball complex - one that hosted the Indiana North-South high school all-star series in 2001. Farley has also annually scheduled games in Victory Field, home of the AAA Indianapolis Indians. The 2003 squad also got a taste of international competition, as the Bulldogs traveled outside of the US for the first time ever as a part of a six-game tour of Australia.

Farley has made Butler summer and winter baseball camps an annual success, with many Indianapolis-area little league and high school players attending his camps each year.

Program building wasn’t something new for Farley. After serving as a graduate assistant coach under the highly regarded Jerry Kindall at Arizona in 1983, he began a full-time coaching career as an assistant at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. As the team’s pitching coach, he helped lower Army’s team earned run average to a school-record 3.99 in just two seasons.

Farley moved to Davis & Elkins College in 1988, inheriting a team that had finished last in the conference the previous two seasons. In 1990, he was named Co-Coach of the Year in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after leading Davis & Elkins to its first 20-win season in over a decade. In 1991, he guided the Senators to a division championship.

A high school all-state pitcher at River Falls, Wis., Farley earned a baseball scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where he became a starting pitcher and three-year letterman. He helped lead the Golden Gophers to the Big Ten finals and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1981. Farley, recipient of the Williams ScholarStudent Athlete Award, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Minnesota in 1981, and a Master’s Degree from the University of Arizona in 1983.

In addition to his coaching duties, Farley has served as a director or instructor at several baseball camps, including the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinics at the College World Series. He has also had several articles on baseball strategy and technique published in athletic journals. In January of 2006, he joined several other baseball coaches from the United States on a trip to Regensburg, Germany, to give instruction to European amateur coaches. The clinics were sponsored

by Major League Baseball’s Envoy Program.

Farley and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Hannah (15) and Sarah (12).

Matt Tyner, a stand-out baseball player in the collegiate and professional ranks, is in the second season of his second stint as part of the Butler baseball program.

Tyner served as an assistant under Farley from 1993 to 1997. He returns to the collegiate level after spending the past 10 years working with the Premier Amateur Summer Programs in Indiana. He will work primarily with the Butler hitters and on team defense while assisting with recruiting and other administrative duties. A feared power threat as an outfielder and third baseman during his playing days, Tyner was drafted in the ninth round of the 1980 Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles from the University of Miami (Florida). He led the Orioles’ minor league system in home runs in his first two seasons, belting 33 in 1981 and 24 in 1982, and helped his Hagerstown (Md.) squad to the 1981 Carolina League Championship before injuries forced his early retirement from the game in 1983. Tyner walked on to the Miami baseball team, where he went on to earn four letters as an outfielder and third baseman. He helped the Hurricanes to the College World Series in three of his seasons, including a third-place finish in 1980, while his 15 homers as a senior captain that year tied the school record and helped him to earn co-MVP honors. Tyner earned a degree in business communications from Concordia University (Indianapolis Center) in 1996.

Jeff Brown begins his fourth season as a member of the Butler coaching staff in 2010. Brown entered the coaching ranks at the start of the 2007 season after a five-year playing career as an infielder under Bulldogs head coach Steve Farley.

He works primarily with Bulldog hitters and position players. A four-year letterwinner with the Bulldogs, Brown hit .295 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI his senior season. He closed his collegiate career with a .276 batting average, 31 doubles and 11 home runs. His 217 at bats in 2006 set the Butler singleseason record, and his 54 starts in 54 games led the team. He continued his playing career in the professional ranks in the spring of 2007, signing a contract to play with the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums of the Frontier League. Additionally, Brown is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Butler.

Bobby Segal is in his first season as a volunteer assistant with the Butler baseball program.

Segal, a former baseball player at Indiana University, is responsible for the catchers, coaches first base and assists with Butler’s offensive strategy.

Segal comes to Butler after spending two seasons at Union College (NAIA) in Barbourville, Ky. During his two seasons at Union, Segal helped the team to a 92-30 record and a berth in the 2008 NAIA World Series. In 2009, the team advanced to the first round of the NAIA National Championship.

Segal, a three-year letterwinner and Academic All-Big Ten selection at Indiana, graduated from IU in May 2006 with a degree in sport management. He earned his master’s in health/physical education from Union College in May 2009.

Summer Baseball Each summer, Butler baseball players compete in some of the top collegiate wood bat summer leagues in the country, in cluding the famous Cape Cod Baseball League.

Former Bulldog and current Minnesota Twins pitcher Pat Neshek helped his Wareham squad to the 2001 Cape Cod League Championship.

Pat Neshek pitched in the 2001 Cape Cod League All-Star Game, held at Fenway Park in Boston.

Former Butler pitcher Ryan Kruszka played for the Cincinnati Steam team that won the 2008 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League Championship.

Former Butler infielder Joe Pauley helped his summer league team to the Stan Musial World Series title in 2007.
