SKY HIGH HOPE CAMP For the first time since the High Park Fire in 2012, Sky High Hope Camp made its way back to Buckhorn! SHHC is a week-long camp for childhood cancer survivors and/or their siblings. It is a week where they are able to embrace just being kids; where the effects of treatment are not anything out of the ordinary and do not prohibit them from enjoying camp life to the fullest. The theme of this year’s camp was “Magic,” and everything from the crafts and games to activities and movie night was magical for the campers, including the end of the week dance! Sky High Hope Camp was a wonderful start to our 2018 summer season.

CAMP HOPE We hosted two, back-to-back weeks of Camp Hope this summer, our camp for adults with developmental disabilities. Camp Hope is a wonderful opportunity for both campers and their caregivers, as campers are able to enjoy a full week of traditional camp activities and worship, and their caregivers are able to have a small respite knowing they are in safe and capable hands.

Many Camp Hope campers have been attending Camp Hope for years! We love hosting such an impactful ministry at Buckhorn.

YOUTH IN MISSION Our Youth In Mission session put youth to work serving around camp, helping facilitate activities for Camp Hope campers, and helping Buckhorn recover from the High Park fire. The weather was a bit dismal at times, but it didn’t dampen our spirits as campers served in a variety of capacities around camp, and enjoyed many of the programming activities Buckhorn offers during our traditional summer camps.

BUCKHORN YOUTH CAMPS It was Game. On. from the beginning of each week to the end for our Buckhorn campers. Our 2018 summer curriculum was called “Elements of Faith: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, based off the elements of nature, and our campers got to experience just about every element firsthand! We had many first-time campers who had never experienced sleep-away camp, and many campers returning from last year. Their weeks were full of exploring through hikes and photo scavenger hunts, GaGa, crafting, GaGa, cardboard boat building, GaGa, devotionals, campfire worship, and of course...GaGa ball. Our summer camps were also successful because of the amazing staff we had in place. Most of our summer staff positions require long hours with little downtime, and our staff handled the ebbs and flows like pros. We also received a record number of high school student job applications and were able to implement a 4-week job program that gave twice as many high schoolers a chance to work for Buckhorn in various capacities!

THE VOLUNTEERS OF SUMMER Volunteers are a part of the very fiber of Buckhorn Camp. Whether it was 40 years, 10 years, or even 2 years ago, volunteers have been a welcomed staple at camp, bringing man (and woman!) power, expertise, and many a servant’s heart. We hosted groups specifically for volunteer work efforts, relied on volunteers in our camp programming, and have discovered additional areas where volunteer help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to every person who gave of their time, talents and resources to continue the mission and programs of Buckhorn, allowing campers and guests to explore, grow, build, and create all summer long.
