Mention Rachel Simpson and the word ‘swoon’ is never far behind
W
ith a nod to vintage and a wink to the feminine, Rachel Simpson offers today’s shoe hungry bride a veritable candy store of sweet organza ribbons, mouth watering metallic finishes and luscious almond shaped toes. Over the years the most ardent shoe lover’s hunger has been satisfied by an ever growing collection that serves up taste, comfort and refinement, but now even more temptation has arrived as Rachel Simpson proudly ushers forward her new debutantes onto the world’s stage with a selection of timeless classics to match your every mood. Feeling fun and flirty? Ask ‘Dottie’ out to play with her zig-zag binding in metallic silver leather, diamond shaped cut-outs and ‘hello boys’ peep toe finished off with a double bow, the cuteness of which would make any Hollywood starlet scream “gimme gimme”. We can’t help thinking Marilyn would own a pair of these. And when shy and demure is your mood de jour spend the day with the adorable Catherine with her prim and proper Peter Pan collar, scalloped binding with pearl and diamante trim. She’s perfect for the blushing bride. But for those with champagne dreams, raise your glass to Amara; a classic satin court shoe overlaid with delicate lace and accompanied by her equally chic sister Camellia, the most delightful of clutch bags, both available in Pink Champagne. With a range of bags, clips and delicious accessories to enhance the collection, the choice is yours. But no matter which style you favour there’s still one word that truly encapsulates Rachel Simpson. ‘Swoon’. rachelsimpsonshoes.co.uk

Goodbye make-do-and-mend, hello vintage glamour puss
I
t seems anything before 4pm yesterday afternoon can be classed as vintage these days but cast your mind back to the decadent yesteryears of the roaring twenties, through the lean years of two world wars and onward and upward to the sexy sizzling silver screen of Hollywood. Mix these styles with a twist of Agatha Christie’s ‘Death on the Nile’, a swizzle of Fred and Ginger and a splash of the late great Lauren Bacall and you’ll find yourself somewhere in the middle of our shoot at Breedon Hall, Leicestershire. Dramatic heavy makeup dares you to go bold, dresses to die for with plunging necklines and frothy feathers from David Fielden and Pronovias. Dare to use black silks and mix silver and gold highlights; accentuate luxury with peacock feathers, heavenly white hydrangeas and pearls, pearls, pearls. Whatever your homage to vintage make it big, make it bold, make it glamour!

PRIVATE LIVES:
SASSI HOLFORD S
assi Holford is a name synonymous with luxury and style. A renowned wedding gown designer with boutiques in Chelsea and Taunton, Sassi has dressed many society brides, some of whom travel across the world to see her. Royalty too has fallen under the Sassi Holford spell including Autumn Kelly who married H.R.H. Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips at Windsor Castle. But behind every great name there’s a private world we rarely see; a ‘to do list’ of family routines and everyday chores. So what does a bridal designer do when she’s not working? We caught up with Sassi for a peek into her private life and discovered a super hero, Marmite and David Beckham! >>

S
assi, when and why did you start your business? In 1981 a school friend was getting married but she had a very tight budget so I offered to design and make her wedding dress even though I’d not undertaken anything like that before! I certainly wasn’t looking to pursue a career in dressmaking at that point but I enjoyed the experience so much and, discovered I had a flair for it. What do you love least about what you do? Trying to utilise the time I spend commuting What do you love most about what you do? Everything outside of commuting! How do you start your day? Getting three children fed and out the door with the right sports equipment Are you a morning or night person? Morning What do you to unwind? Cook Favourite meal? Either a full English breakfast or a Sunday roast with the family Favourite tipple? Hendrick’s gin Dogs or cats? Dogs Coke or Pepsi? Neither Marmite - Love or Hate? LOVE!
Favourite animal? Cheetah Favourite biscuit? I don’t eat biscuits... Favourite mug? I have a bone china mug at home with pictures of stacked cotton reels on it Who is your favourite super hero? My husband! Favourite holiday destination? So far, I’d say either Vietnam or Africa Most famous person you’ve ever met? The Queen Favourite shoes? I can’t specify – it really depends on what I’m wearing. Favourite author? I don’t really have one - I prefer a good autobiography or biography. What are you reading at the moment? “If I Don’t Write It Nobody Else Will” by Eric Sykes. Can you cook and if so what’s your speciality? Yes, I love making a flavoursome but rustic casserole. Secret crush? David Beckham... Choose 4 people you’d like to have dinner with? I love meeting people – so anyone nice! Favourite room in the house and why? “The snug”, just off the kitchen, because it’s full of family life Favourite appliance? My lovely Aga Are you a gardener? No –but thank goodness my gardener is!
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine 44
Can you keep a houseplant alive for more than a month? Yes – but only if it’s hardy... What do you want for Christmas this year? I’d like to go to India Your scariest moment? My daughter recently made me get on a 17-hand horse – terrifying! I haven’t been on a horse since I was 15! Favourite memory from your wedding? The Best Man’s speech – it was hysterical If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would you be doing? Fostering If you could change one thing in the world? Hunger If you could change one thing about yourself? My patience... Go back in time to witness a particular event in history. Where are you? VE Day on the Mall How would you like to be remembered? As one of the best wedding dress designers! What can brides expect when they choose Sassi Holford? Total professionalism with flair and design. What advice do you have for brides looking for their wedding dress? Research the designers for your personal style – if you need to visit more than five boutiques you’ve maybe not researched enough...
CATWALK TO CLASSROOM
T
he girls at King’s College, Taunton are going to get A+ for fashion thanks to Sassi who has redesigned their school uniform. The new look launched in September 2014. Girls were first admitted to King’s College in 1991 when a local girls’ school closed, and their uniform - a navy blazer and a blue pleated skirt - was hastily put together. The girls’ outfit was not well liked and bore little resemblance to the boys’ grey tweed jacket which has been the standard since 1964. Headmaster Richard Biggs approached Sassi, whose children attend King’s College, to enlist her professional knowledge and experience in designing a uniform for the girls that would create a consistent theme with the boys’ uniform, appeal to the girls’ sense of style and represent the values of the school. Sassi worked with the school to design a co-ordinating uniform and to choose fabrics that incorporate the King’s College colours. The girls’ tailored jacket was produced in the same herringbone as the boys’ blazer but made more feminine with a navy blue velvet collar with weld detail. The shirt has a stylish v-collar, inspired by a couture blouse from Sassi’s current collection, and the skirt has complementing box pleats to match the jacket. A little elan has been added by lining the jacket in King’s College red. Sassi commented: “Designing a school uniform was certainly a departure for me, but I’ve loved working with the staff and the young women of King’s College to create a uniform that reflects their values and their style – and, of course, it will be very rewarding to see my own daughter in her new uniform that I have designed.” The Headmaster, Richard Biggs, says “I was always told that you change your school’s uniform at your peril - it is a very difficult thing to get right. But we took the plunge and, with the expert and very welcome help of Sassi Holford, we’ve arrived at a new design which absolutely everybody thinks is fantastic. The look is fresh, smart, and very distinctive - our boys and girls will certainly stand out from the crowd! I know several mothers who want to buy the jacket for themselves, which must be a really good sign.” Images courtesy of Sassi Holford sassiholford.com

BEHIND THE Ever wondered what it’s like to work within a prestigious country house wedding venue? Prestwold Hall General Manager MJ McMullen takes us behind closed doors at one of Leicestershire’s favourite wedding venues and tells us how she worked her way up to one of the top hospitality jobs in the county.
“A
fter finishing school at the age of 17 I decided to embark on a career in catering. My first role was Banqueting
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine 46
Manager at Burnham Beeches Hotel in Surrey, where we took care of the English football team before their International games - this was during the era of Gazza! After 18 months an opportunity arose to move on to become a Conference and Sales Coordinator at the prestigious Runnymede Hotel and Spa in Egham near Windsor. I decided after almost four years that I still needed to gain more experience within the industry so I moved back to Gloucestershire where I managed the Hotel and Conference Centre at the Head Office of Mitsubishi Motors UK.

SCENES I had always wanted to work overseas as I had spent most of my childhood travelling the world with my parents so when the opportunity arose I took a role as Hotel Manager with Mark Warner which enabled me to work 6 months in the mountains and 6 months in the sun for 3 years. I returned to the UK after deciding the time had come to put down my roots and I choose Leicestershire. I started my career with Maverick Venue Management over 12 years ago at Sutton Bonington Hall, which has
recently returned to a family home for the owners. Another opportunity arose in the business in May of this year at Prestwold Hall and the rest as they say, is history. I start my day with a Nespresso coffee, followed by a lady-jog and then the school run which sets me up for the day. When I arrive at Prestwold Hall my first job of the day is usually to read through and respond to emails and telephone messages then it’s a walk around the property and the formal gardens.
“Prestwold has a unique ambiance”
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine 47
When it’s a wedding day, one of my favourite duties is looking after the couple and their family. It’s one of the most memorial days of their lives however I don’t like how quickly the day seems to fly by for the bride and groom. My advice to couples would be to find some time during the day to stand back from everything around you and capture the moment. Your wedding day is one of the most full on days of your life. Make sure you take in all the sights and sounds and enjoy every moment of it.” www.prestwold-hall.com 01509 880236
“We have five permanent staff and forty casual staff at Prestwold Hall. For each wedding it takes on average twenty staff across several departments to ensure the event runs smoothly.”
“One of my fondest memories of a wedding at Prestwold is when a bride was on her way up to bed and suddenly realised she’d forgotten to pack her contraceptive pills! Her mother went all the way home to fetch them!”

BEHIND THE SCENES | PRESTWOLD HALL
“The Dining room is my favourite room in the house. It has a double aspect overlooking our formal gardens and beyond across the fields. The room is flooded with natural light and has a magical feel about it and when the Chandelier is lit it takes center stage.” “Prestwold Hall is one of Leicestershire’s premier country houses. There’s a fabulous ambiance here and we pride ourselves on attention to detail and outstanding cuisine. I believe this is what makes us such a popular venue.”
“The role of General Manager requires good customer relation skills, financial acumen, people management skills, attention to detail, market knowledge, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, and GSOH!”

S
o you’ve promised to marry the partner of your dreams. You’ve booked the venue, the caterer and found the dress you’ve always imagined, but now you’re stumped at where to start with planning your flowers? Well panic no longer! Here are the important factors that will guide you: Choosing your Florist
Recommendation is always invaluable for choosing your florist, whether it’s from family, friends or venues. Visit or have the florists meet you and see samples of their work. Sit down and talk to them and find the florist whom you’re on a level with and whom you feel can translate your wedding into just how you imagined it to be. Many florists only take on one wedding per day so early booking is essential.
Colours
The best time to have a full and lengthy conversation with your florist is after you’ve selected your bridesmaids outfits. Once you’ve got these you’ll have an idea of the colours that will be the base tones of your wedding. The colours you choose for these dresses will have a major impact on creating the overall colour scheme of your wedding and will influence further choices from the styling of the tables through to the style of invitations. An actual sample of the fabric or coordinating ribbon is ideal for a florist to use to colour match from. Pictures from brochures or printouts are great but bear in mind shades can be changed by different computers and printers.
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine 50
Venues
Quintessential, historic, modern? Wherever you choose to get married and hold your reception, the locations will hold the key to the placement and style of flowers within. Fireplaces to sideboards, bars to entranceways, take lots of pictures of your venues when you first visit them, not only for your own reference to look back on, but also to show and assist your florist in seeing your wedding through your eyes. Be courteous of historic venues, in particular Churches, which may well have their own guidelines on decoration and what you can put where, so best check early on in your planning. Marquees offer a blank canvas for you to be creative as they offer the most flexibility when it comes to set up of the tables and dressing of the available space.
Styles & Themes
Many venues and locations have their own style and this will need to be incorporated. Modern striking displays may not marry quite so well with a heavily gothic ornate Church so consider tempering down the style for the Church and just give your guests a small insight as to what they might find at the reception. Much of the style and themes found in many bridal magazines are fashion led and if you have your heart set on a style, then go for it, full heartedly. Your florist will be able to advise on the best choice of flowers for maximum impact in your designs and suggestions on where to source accessories from. Living in the world of the internet almost any accessory is only a google search away.
the picture I’ve found’ then at least you are in full knowledge of the variations and possible flowers quantities. There’s nothing more disheartening for a florist than to write a quote just as the bride wants it and then the reply to be ‘it’s too expensive’. Every bride has a different budget so without that information at the start the florist doesn’t know your ball park expectation.
Photography
You will look back at your photographs in years to come, so making essential choices on the shape and style of the bridal bouquet and the colours will be paramount. Many bouquets are timeless classics, but there are some which will ‘age’ in time. In terms of colours, if the bridesmaid was to carry the exact same coloured bouquet as her dress, the bouquet will disappear on the photographs, without an edge of green, an accent of another colour or by choosing a bouquet of contrasting colour tones; purples and blues are particularly prone to this.
Personality
Most of all, be true to your own personality. If you’re a country girl at heart, echo it with rustic containers, or if you’re a city slicker, follow it through with chic streamlined displays. It’s the one day you can truly express who you are.
Budget
From the beginning be realistic and up front with your florist about your overall flower budget. Your florist can then produce quotes that are relevant to you. Even if you ask for a quote with two priced versions of a single design, one that fits with your budget and ‘just like

JULIA’S TOP 10 TIPS
1. Recommendation is the best form of finding a good florist. 2. A portfolio of the florist’s own work shows the capability of the florist and variation in his or her work. 3. Ask your florist for pictures of their previous work at your chosen venue. They will have prior knowledge of display sizes and styles which work well. 4. Consider the season of your wedding. More and more flowers are now available all year round but some are still confined to their natural season. 5. A few larger well placed displays may cost the same as lots of smaller displays but deliver more impact. 6. Moving flowers from the Church to the reception will make the most of your budget but good etiquette means not stripping the Church of all decorations. Leave at least one prominent display and the altar flowers as a thankful gesture. 7. Have ‘thank you’s to make? Consider labelling and attaching a note to each table decoration for their recipient. 8. If your flowers arrive in water remember to dry the bottom of the stems at least half an hour before you require them so they don’t drip on your dress. 9. If you don’t have the heart to throw your bouquet, and don’t have a budget for an additional tossing bouquet, consider throwing one of the bridesmaids’ bouquets instead. 10. Offering corsages for Mums shows good etiquette, especially if they are paying towards the event, even if they are declined.
How did your career begin as a Plus Size Model? “I started my career working in promotions, corporate hospitality and exhibitions. Unfortunately I suffered with an eating disorder when I was 18. My weight plummeted and I was around a size 10. I was taken on by a modelling agency after they saw me at the Motor Show on a car stand, but I was always bigger around my hips and thighs and really struggled to keep my weight and shape to the required size. It came as much needed relief when I heard about "plus size" modelling and my agency suggested I took time out, let my body gain its natural shape and then try to break into the plus size modelling world which was just starting to make its mark in the UK - this proved to be the best decision I ever made!” What so far is the most exciting moment of your career? “I have had so many exciting moments in my career - every day is different! I love the challenge, adventure and travel that this job provides but most of all,
ever done is walk down a catwalk in my underwear infront of 10,000 people plus whoever was watching on the TV!” Can you share your beauty tips? “Water, water, water! plus avocado and coconut oil. Ha ha! I swear by water for my skin, keeping my body rehydrated. Boring I know and everyone says it but I swear it’s true! And Avocado is amazing. I know it’s a fat but it’s a good fat, whether you use it on the inside or the outside. In moderation, I think it’s a wonder food!” Which is your favourite ‘must have’ beauty product? “Organic Coconut Oil - it’s amazing everywhere - even for cooking with. I use it as a treatment on my hair once a week and also on my body as a moisturiser all natural and very good for you!”
being signed with one of the top agencies in the World - FORD Models. I lived in NYC for 3 years and worked with some top photographers and clients. It really was a dream come true!” What tips can you give our brides for when they’re infront of the camera? “I think the best advice I can give is just to be completely natural. You’ll find it’s these pictures that make the best ones. Remember, it’s your day, you’ll be looking and feeling a million dollars in the dress of your dreams with your gorgeous partner next to you. Just enjoy every moment and relax - this is what all the hard work was for. Enjoy being with your family and friends and celebrating the day for what it is. The photographer will capture all your beautiful moments for a day to treasure.” What’s the best way to stand in a photograph? “I personally don't think wedding photos should be too staged. Just have complete fun with them! Standing sideways on with one leg infront of the other will make you appear longer and leaner; head up and smile. And don't let your bouquet hide your beautiful dress. Place it so it is seen but leaves your dress visible.” What’s the scariest thing you’ve done? “One of the scariest things I have
Buckinghams Wedding Magazine 52
How do you stay fit and healthy? “I love walking with my beautiful pooch. I have a Newfoundland called Enzo. He’s my baby and we walk for miles together and have lots of love and cuddles. I am also quite addicted to hot yoga at the moment. You feel amazing after the lesson, completely revived and refreshed! I also love swimming too although I don't go as much as I would like to.” How do you spend your spare time? “Presently I don't get much spare time unfortunately, however when I’m not working I am always with my partner James and my beautiful family. They mean the world to me. James and I have just bought a gorgeous new home so we’re enjoying spending time renovating the property together.” What’s in the pipeline for the future? “I have lots of ideas in the pipeline for the future. I have always wanted my own plus size boutique. This has been a dream of mine for a while now and I definitely think there is a huge niche in the market for sexy, gorgeous, curvy clothes. We all deserve to feel and look beautiful, especially if we are lucky enough to have curves.” www.ninablakemore.com Twitter @Nina_Blakemore

We also knew Steve Walton was the man to handle the photography and from the moment we met Nina we knew she was the woman we wanted on the cover. For us, Nina epitomises natural beauty and vivacious energy; a confidence to discover and remain true to who you are. If we as a publication in any way influence brides to embrace that spirit on their wedding day then we will consider ourselves a success. We are truly honoured Nina agreed to be the first face of Buckinghams and we are delighted to introduce her as our first Cover Girl.
the best positive by far, are the people that I’ve met working in this industry. I absolutely loved my time working with Gok Wan on ‘How to Look Good Naked’. This programme epitomises everything that I have worked towards as a curvy girl- you don't have to be a size zero to be gorgeous! I also had the privilege of

Your guide to entering & exiting your wedding car. Our Editor talks to Joanne Beardmore of Dennisson Classsic Cars parents thought to lay a carpet runner down for the Bride from house to car. It is also helpful if the driveway is clear of other cars so the Bride doesn’t brush her dress against a dirty car. Think about the weather! Plan for rain and if it doesn’t it is a bonus. We always carry huge ivory umbrellas and a floor cover for the Bride so her gown stays clean when getting out of the wedding car. Your Chauffeur should give you guidance on how to get in and out of the wedding car sedately. We have a one, two, three routine. One: reverse and place bottom on seat pause

aving experienced manoeuvreing my own meringue onto a horse and carriage, Sark ferry and a tractor trailer (with bows on I hasten to say) I thought I’d ask the experts to share some top tips to help you master the ‘ins and outs’ of wedding transportation. I turned to Jo Beardmore from Dennisson Classic Cars (dennissonclassics.co.uk) in Nottingham to get the low down on how to hitch your skirts whilst remaining glam at all times.
Two: bend your head to avoid knocking your veil/ hair style out of place - pause
Three: swing your legs into the car and try to avoid the heels of your shoes getting caught up in the layers of your dress and under skirts. Don’t forget your flowers - believe it or not this is very common and we often have to remind Brides and Bridesmaids to go back for their bouquets. Relax in the wedding car and enjoy the journey to the marriage venue. Keep calm!
“Before you even think about getting into the car, make sure you have clear access out of the house and the driveway! Many a time I’ve had to hold back an over grown bush or tree to make sure the Bridal gown doesn’t get caught up in it. In nearly ten years of being a Chauffeur for wedding days I have only witnessed two weddings where the

ike many couples Matt and I met at work. We were both working at Boots developing photographs in the lab. I’d been there a little while when a painfully shy Matt walked in one day. I had no idea he liked me for at least a year when he finally plucked up the courage to ask me out by text! We bonded over a love of music, gigs and film. Matt popped the question on my 30th birthday over breakfast. I looked terrible! I was still in my pyjamas with no make up and messy hair, but I didn’t care, I felt like I’d won the lottery! Since the wedding, we’ve discovered that we exchanged vows on the very same day we met exactly 12 years before. It was fate! After looking at several venues, our final choice was Brooksby Hall in Melton Mowbray. We knew we wanted a simple ceremony in rural surroundings and Brooksby really did tick all the boxes. The Old Hall where our civil ceremony and wedding breakfast took place is beautiful, and we knew the stunning gardens would make the perfect backdrop for some amazing photos. We wanted to keep the menu simple, so we chose food that wasn’t too fancy and that we knew our guests would enjoy. As we got married on a Sunday, we opted for a good old Sunday Roast with all the trimmings.
floaty fabric just looked gorgeous against any skin tone, my girls totally upstaged me! We didn’t really intend on a specific theme for the wedding from the outset, but I knew I wanted it to have a real vintage feel. Being just 5ft tall, I chose a vintage tea length dress with lace appliqué and a full tulle skirt. In keeping with the gorgeous surroundings, we chose rustic “just picked” style flowers in pale vintage pinks and lilacs. Our centrepieces were ivory birdcages filled with more flowers, and confetti was made from pages of romantic novels punched into heart shapes and given to out guests in shabby chic paper cones. As a special surprise for our guests, we booked a traditional ice cream bike to serve ice cream between the ceremony and wedding breakfast. The best part was when Steve, the ice cream man rode into the grounds ringing his bicycle bell. I’ll never forget the look on our guests’ faces! We have so many amazing memories of our special day, but one that really stays with me is the two of us, walking hand in hand back down the aisle into the sunshine, and greeting our guests as husband and wife - an indescribable feeling. Everyone present at our wedding played a special part simply by being there, but a special mention has to go to our parents, bridesmaids, groomsmen and pageboys who did us all proud. Also our photographer Joanne, who captured every moment of the day to perfection. We went to London for a few days immediately after the wedding which was wonderful. We opted for a honeymoon
I knew that an Ivory dress would be the best choice for me, as I’m fair skinned, and Matt and his groomsmen all looked very dapper in classic charcoal grey. To compliment this, I decided on pale turquoise chiffon for my bridesmaids. The combination of the stunning colour with the

fund instead of gifts, so we’re hoping to go abroad this year for a second one! When it comes to planning, I would say plan the day you both want. It’s easy to get bogged down by what you think your friends would choose, or what Granny will or won’t eat, but ultimately the day is about you so make it personal, you’ll be so glad you did. Delegate! Never be afraid to ask for help from friends and family. Planning a wedding can be a stressful business, so if it’s all getting a bit too much, delegate a few small tasks to your nearest and dearest. Not only will it take some of the pressure off you, but your mum, sister, girlfriends etc. will only be too happy to oblige Finally, enjoy it! It sounds silly but try to enjoy the planning process. You will only get the opportunity to be a bride once, so relish every second of planning your big day.

Andy said some very lovely words as he proposed but I don’t remember them as I was already crying! Needless to say I got no more work done that evening!!
PLANNING THE WEDDING
HOW WE MET
THE PROPOSAL
Andy and I met behind the bar at the Old Horse in Leicester. I became a big fan of Andy’s band ‘No One Knows’ and followed them around their Leicester Gigs. (Well that was my excuse - really I just fancied him!!) It was only after Andy graduated and I was doing my finals that Andy realised that there was something more than friendship there! But before love could blossom I was packing my bags to travel the world for nine months. This could have been the end of the relationship but the time apart and the distance only confirmed how we felt about each other and within a week of landing back in the UK, I had moved back up to Leicester to be with Andy. The rest as they say is history!
If I’m honest the proposal is all a little blurry for me! Andy finally popped the question in December 2012 after four and a half years together. There had been a couple of times previously I’d thought he might do it but I was always disappointed! We were due to be going away for a long weekend to Amsterdam and I was convinced he would do it whilst we were away. Andy however had other plans. On the Thursday evening whilst I was trying to finish my work so we could have an uninterrupted break, he decided to throw a curve ball at me and get Millie our Cockapoo to propose to me for him! Andy had placed a big red bow around Millie’s neck and attached to that was my engagement ring. Apparently

Very quickly I realised that all the weddings I saw in the magazines that really drew my eye were the more country/rustic/barn themed weddings and so this was our main influence when it came to the planning. The first thing I did was start researching venues and I think in total we visited eight. Whilst all the venues were beautiful, budget and quirkiness led us to Donington Park Farmhouse and the Pigstys. Once we’d chosen the venue this became the guide for all the other elements. The colour scheme was red because it’s my favourite colour, however I was worried about putting the girls in red dresses as this can be a difficult colour for some people to wear. Instead I chose navy and decided to use red as the accent colour with red shoes and red flowers for the bridesmaids. Food however was an easy choice! We decided on venison sausages and mash for the main course as this is my favourite meal.
I wanted the wedding to stay about who we are and what we love rather than it being pretentious - that’s just not who we are! One thing that we had a lot of fun with was choosing the cake. I fell in love with a naked cake by Celeste at The Organic Wedding Cake Company who I met at a Buckinghams Wedding Fair. I loved was her passion for organic and gluten free ingredients. I just knew we’d be getting the absolute best. Our whole cake was gluten free as a couple of our guests are allergic yet know one noticed the difference!! We had fun selecting the different flavours for each layer!
MY FAVOURITE MEMORY I can’t really pick a favourite memory. The whole day was so magical but if I had to choose one memory it would be spending time with my new husband as we walked back to the venue after sneaking out after dinner for some more couples shots. We grabbed some time just to ourselves before the big party! My totally rubbish bouquet toss is probably one of the funniest incidents!
OUR HONEYMOON Our honeymoon was to Kenya and Zanzibar. We spent a week on safari in Kenya before heading for some relaxation in Zanzibar. Whilst I had been to both places before it was so special to see how excited Andy was at being in Africa, a continent that is very close to my heart.

MY TOP TIPS FOR BRIDES-TO-BE 1. Don’t underestimate how long it takes to do hair and makeup for eight women!! I wish I’d got a second hairdresser as we lost time for girly photos and celebrating. 2. No matter how much you love to organise things you can’t do everything and you’ll want to just chill out and enjoy it. Even if you plan every single detail yourself get an on the day wedding planner to co-ordinate things for you. Yes your venue may have a planner there on the day but they work for the venue and not for you. 3. Listen to your photographer about timings as they know better than anyone how long things take. It will be worth it in the long run! 4. Your day will go so quickly, get it videoed! Andy was quite reluctant to spend money on a videographer but when we sat down to watch the video together it was so lovely to see our day and all the guest messages.

“I’m a Cornish girl and my husband Antony is a Kiwi and we both love the outdoors, especially the beach. So we both thought it would be really nice and personal to see each other there first, in private with only our best friends around us”. It really was special, and very relaxing! After all the preparation and stress of actually getting to the wedding day itself, this brought it all back to what it should be about. Just two people wanting to commit to each other. And after that time together, and having some good fun getting photos with our photographer and bridal party, the prospect of standing at the front of the Church in front of 100 people didn’t faze me at all!! In fact, we absolutely sailed through the Church ceremony and enjoyed it 100%! I would recommend it to anyone. And I would definitely recommend Sarah Salotti Photography. She is an amazingly talented girl and a very calming and fun presence on the day. She has captured our memories so perfectly and given us photographs which we treasure“.

he dress was designed by me and made by a New Zealand dressmaker, Christine Stokes. The men’s suits were tailor made in NZ. My shoes were by “Django & Juliette” an Australian label and my jewellery was a pair of Antique Canary yellow drop silver earrings from Wentworths of Truro, Cornwall. My bracelet was my Grandmother’s pearl necklace doubled around my wrist. For the floral hair piece I bought a gold alice band and had it decorated with flowers by a local florist, Hayley of Hayley’s Flower Shop, St. Agnes. The event flowers and floral spray on my dress was by Sue Saddington in St. Agnes. Hair and make-up for myself and my bridesmaids was done at “Gossips” hair and beauty salon in St. Agnes, Cornwall. Venues: Our first meeting was at Trevellas beach in St. Agnes, Cornwall. The Wedding Ceremony was at St. Agnes Church, Cornwall. The Reception was at Scorrier House, Scorrier, Cornwall.

...with added sparkle from Thomas the Caterer INGREDIENTS (serves 8) For the sorbets 600g water 600g sugar 225g blackberries 225g raspberries 125g water 125g water For the ice-cream 1 pint milk 1 pint double cream 100g castor sugar 125g glucose 6 egg yolks 1 vanilla pod split and scraped 200g strawberries For the fresh fruit 200g strawberries 150g blueberries 150 g raspberries
Top tip! Make sure you immediately beat the eggs and sugar together once you put them in the bowl otherwise the sugar “burns” the yolks leaving little bits - not good. The milk and cream will come to the boil. When it does, pour it over the egg mixture and beat well to combine. This will form a custard. Return to the pan, turn the heat down and cook slowly until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat, place in a clean bowl and chill. Once the mixture is chilled, remove the vanilla pod, puree the strawberries, pass them through a sieve and blend them with the custard mixture. You’re ready to churn. The method for ice cream isn’t quite the same as the method for sorbet so for best results I suggest befriending your local caterer or restaurant or getting yourself an ice cream maker but if you want to try and make it yourself, here’s how. To churn the ice cream, place a deep pie dish or casserole dish in the freezer and get it really cold. Once you’ve made the “custard mixture” let it cool to room temperature, then pour the custard into the frozen dish, and close the freezer door. Return to the freezer every half hour to 45 mins and give it a good stir to break down the ice crystals; repeat until you have a lovely smooth ice cream.
For the coulis 150g raspberries 150g icing sugar
THE TUILE Melt the stork, cool slightly in a bowl. Mix all the ingredients together to make a smooth paste. Chill until cold. Whilst you’re waiting for this to chill, take a stencil or template of any shape. I like an obtuse or isosceles triangle but have fun with it and see what you end up with! On a sheet of baking parchment, use your new template to make triangles all over the parchment with your mixture. Place on a tray and bake at 180 degrees C until the tuile becomes golden brown – this should be about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and experiment with twists and bends! It’s fun and doesn’t need to be too neat so there’s no need to worry!
Can of squirty cream For the tuile 25g stork 25g icing sugar 25g plain flour 1 egg white THE SORBET Firstly make stock syrup. This is a ‘cheffy’ word which basically means sugary water. Use equal quantities of water and sugar and simmer in a large pan until the sugar has dissolved. Meanwhile in a jug, use a stick blender to puree the fresh fruits separately. Sieve out any seeds or fleshy bits. Put the purees in two separate bowls, add 125g of cold water to each and half of the sugar syrup into the bowls. Whisk well. Now you have your mixture ready to churn. If you don’t have an ice cream machine, put these mixes into shallow trays (like one you would use for lasagne) and place them in the fridge returning every half hour to whisk. This should lighten and fluff up the freezing mixture to “churn it”. This will take a couple of hours minimum. THE STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM Place the milk, cream, glucose and vanilla pod in a large pan. Bring to the boil but be careful - don’t boil it over! (It’s really messy and quite a pain - I have done it far too many times!) Place the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and beat well until they look lighter and creamy.
THE COULIS Blend the raspberries with the icing sugar and pass through a sieve to remove any seeds or fleshy bits. THE GLORY BIT! It’s up to you how your build your Knickerbocker Glory. I would start with a little coulis at the bottom, add some fresh fruit, then a dollop of ice cream and sorbet, some more fruit… then some more ice cream, coulis, squirty cream, the tuile and perhaps a glace cherry if you wish. This recipe will actually serve more than 8 but who doesn’t like a little bit of ice-cream in the freezer! Finally - ENJOY!
