elcome to the second issue of Buckinghams Wedding Magazine. Well it’s certainly been a soggy summer to say the least. We’re pleased to report back that most of our summer brides escaped the rain and enjoyed some sunshine on their big day. We’re so excited that this issue’s featured designer is the fabulous Ian Stuart. One of our all time faves at BWM he’s been telling us all about his Designer Life (page 44). We’ve got four fabulous Real Weddings to share with you in this issue including a back garden wedding packed with vintage charm and a stunner of a wedding at Kensington Palace, London. he day was amazing!! Having every single person we know and love in one place was incredible! There were 250 guests in total, a live band, DJ and mobile bar so we were in for a good night! A beautiful ceremony followed by an awesome party made for an amazing day! We were looking for a local ‘vintage’ venue but couldn’t find one that we liked. It was so important for our wedding to be informal and fun! We wanted a relaxed, very personal garden party. We definitely did not want a formal wedding. Family friends kindly lent us their garden to put up a 40ft by 80ft marquee! It was a bit nerve wracking checking the weather forecast weeks before! We decorated the whole marquee over two days with many kind friends giving up their time to help. My mum, Jayne Robinson, owns Little Robin’s Cottage; a prop hire company for weddings and events. She was amazing and decorated the whole marquee in antique furniture and props. You could say it was a fabulous opportunity to showcase everything she has available to hire! We created seating areas with hay bales and cushions and we had a huge dance floor. My mum baked all the cakes, macarons, desserts and sweets for the daytime guests. To the delight of everyone we had a Krispy Kreme doughnut wedding cake which went down very well! I found my dress in a vintage shop in Leicester for just

£175! It was hand made in the 1940s by the original bride. I had alterations at Pretty Maids Bridal Wear in Leicester as the dress needed lengthening. They created a v-neckline and exposed the back so now it’s completely unique to me which makes it even more special. Matt’s outfit started with just a bow tie from Mrs Bowtie. Over time he bought
trousers from Gap, shoes, belt and jackets from M&S and shirts from Debenhams! Eventually it all came together the week of the wedding! I knew Mary Cufflin Photography because she photographed my niece at two weeks old and I really liked her style. All our suppliers were local including the band, our day caterers, our evening
caterers, the marquee company and even the glass hire. We went to Julia Dilworth Flowers for my bouquet, the floral crowns, bridesmaid bouquets and buttonholes. We did the marquee flowers ourselves and bought gypsophila from the flower market and flowers from Aldi which we arranged in jugs, tins and pots.

My favourite part of the day (other than dancing on the table!) was the speeches. They were hilarious! All the men had been so worried so I wasn’t expecting much but they were fantastic! They stood on the raised flower beds, terrified and surrounded by all our guests. It helped having the speeches before the food so they could all relax. The evening started with our first dance which was Ed Sheeran ‘Thinking Out Loud’. We picked it months ago when the album first came out and loved it but then it became

the song of the year! I’m glad we stuck with it though. It was playing everywhere when we began our wedding planning and it still plays everywhere now so we’re constantly reminded of our fantastic day. We honeymooned in the Corfu mountains. It was idyllic; quiet, beautiful and we loved our private pool and terrace. It was the perfect way to relax after our crazy wedding.

A teal & brown December wedding brimming over with personal touches
om is Australian but has lived in Australia, USA and UK all in equal measure. Somehow we both ended up living in the same small village in Nottinghamshire. We actually met at a fish and chip shop! I tend to liken it to the movie ‘Sliding Doors’ As for the proposal, Tom did this very, very well. Tom’s mum and dad live in New York. We went to visit them in May 2012 and Tom decided to arrange a trip to Niagara Falls. There’s a restaurant we wanted to visit called ‘The Silo’ which is a converted water silo right on Niagara river. We went for dinner and afterwards a walk along the river. This is where he proposed. He chose the ring himself and it was perfect. My favourite memory of the day has to be Mum’s speech. My mum
walked me down the aisle; we are incredibly close. We nearly lost her to a brain aneurysm the February before we got married so it was particularly emotional for me. I’m so glad the registrar allowed photos of our ceremony (some don’t and you need to check this beforehand!) because we were both so nervous that neither of us really remember it! We wrote our own vows and I’m really glad we did because they were words that really meant something to us. When it came to selecting our suppliers this was a bit different for us as we work in the wedding industry but we put just as much effort into sourcing the right suppliers as everyone else. The only problem was, every time we went to a wedding fair for Whites Fine Food, I would come back with different ideas.

I quickly learned you have to choose the direction you want to take and stick to it. In hindsight, and I know its easy to say this afterwards, but I wouldn’t sweat the small stuff. When small details don’t go entirely to plan, the only person that will notice is you. Most of our guests were staying the night before at Centre Parcs and our biggest worry was whether the coach we’d booked would turn up to collect them and take them to the venue. Also, if I was doing it all again I would actually change my dress for the evening party to something still bridal but slightly easier to dance in! As wedding caterers ourselves, when it came to the food it obviously played the most important part of our day. We wanted to go hot and heavy on the canapés as we were getting married at
lunchtime and knew our guests wouldn’t have time to eat lunch. We served mulled wine and boozy hot chocolate followed by a three course meal. We decided to give our guests a choice on the menu and for the evening guests we served all of our favourite nibbles, local cheeses, charcuterie, breads, olives and dips. My top three tips for brides-tobe are choose wedding suppliers you both feel comfortable with; that you click with. This will help immensely with the planning of your day. Whatever happens enjoy your day and get wedding insurance! And finally have a live band. They really get the party going!

ark and I attended the same secondary school in Loughborough but didn’t socialise with the same people. Ten years later we bumped into each other on a night out and began dating soon afterwards. (He actually tried to ask one of my bridesmaids for my number a few years before that, but she refused…which may have been mentioned in his speech!) At 7am on the 5th February whilst I was getting ready for work, Mark got down on one knee and produced a ring. I was stunned as it was a school day (we’re both teachers) – and also Mark’s 30th birthday. He chose the date as he knew it was the last thing I would expect. Our wedding ceremony was at St. Winefride’s Church in Shepshed which is my family’s parish church. It was the
most important part of our day. Father Michael celebrated a very personal and special service. Our family members gave the readings and my university friend Jenny played the flute during the register. Caroline Sharpe’s solo performance of Bach’s Ave Maria was a highlight, and the singers ensured the sound of hymns filled the church. My dress was a Pronovias gown from Rococo in Melbourne. As soon as I visited Rococo I knew I would find my dress there – Sarah and Donna create a wonderfully relaxed and friendly environment and there are so many beautiful dresses in there. I only wish I could wear my dress again. My hair and make-up finished off the look; it was so nice to sit back and relax in the morning whilst Kaye and the team at Mewies and Indy did their magic. For our flowers I created a board on Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Issue 2 Page 37
Pinterest for all things wedding and showed Kerry at The Blossom Tree who knew instantly which flowers and colours I was looking for. My bouquet contained beautiful blush pink garden roses, avalanche roses and hydrangeas. On the tables we had bottles filled with the same roses and foliage for a simple but classic feel. My bridesmaids wore ASOS dresses in a nude/blush colour. They were actually called ‘Kate Lace’ which seemed appropriate. Mark bought his Ted Baker three piece navy suit from Moss Bros and hired matching two piece suits for the best man and groomsmen. Our page boys wore navy trousers and waistcoats from F&F and we hired matching pink ties for them like the men. The food at Prestwold was incredible and we do love to eat! We chose haddock fishcakes with garlic aioli, followed by shoulder of lamb with dauphinoise >>
potatoes and finally the most amazing salted caramel tart for pudding. Our evening food was simple but delicious – Lincolnshire sausage and bacon cobs with chunky chips. We looked at a lot of venues in the East Midlands but Prestwold was the one that felt right. It is a stunning venue – especially the dining room - but feels quite cosy and homely inside. MJ and her team were so experienced and professional that we knew we could trust them to help us achieve the reception that we wanted. We also wanted to make sure we didn’t have to rely on the Great British weather for our venue, which was the right decision as it rained all day without an inch of blue sky in sight! The last song of the night, Never Forget, had everyone on the dance floor. Looking around at that point we couldn’t have been happier that our day had been so perfect. TIPS FROM THE BRIDE Plan your wedding as a couple and try not to worry too much about how to please everyone. Don’t try to organise too much happening at once – we had lots of ideas for the evening but then realised that after booking our band, we didn’t need anything else. Our favourite part of a wedding is always having a boogie. On the day – enjoy every minute because it will be over all too soon!

Pure Gold at Kensington Palace

ne of the highlights this summer for wedding planner Tina Smyth is the wedding she organised at one of London’s most impressive venues. “We had just five months planning time to organise this wedding held in the beautiful Orangery at Kensington Palace. The couple wanted a lavish affair incorporating their different heritages and traditions whilst keeping an intimate feel to the day. Warm shades of gold ran throughout and created a luxurious yet welcoming ambience: from the gold-foiled monogrammed message box with matching cards where guests could leave their well wishes to the bar menus presented in beautiful golden antique frames. Long dinner tables instead of the more traditional round tables not only allowed for a better use of space but created an intimate setting. The tables were dressed with rich textured, soft wheat coloured linen and crisp white linen napkins embroidered with the couple’s monogram, stunning matt golden charger plates and elegant antique gold cutlery. Beautiful tall glass flutes with floral designs in dreamy pastel colours were set along the tables with small golden globes of flowers, a hundred tea lights and crystal hurricane vases with tall candles. The couple’s sweetheart table was dressed in a luxurious handmade gold sequin cloth and the candle display made for a beautiful setting for the speeches. The couple’s monogram was displayed in letters of moss behind their table. One of the most magical moments of the day was the cake cutting. Not only was the bespoke creation by The Abigail Bloom Cake Company a breathtaking display but surprise fireworks created the perfect backdrop! As the couple cut the cake, ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ played, the fireworks began and it was time to dance the night away.”

The amazing wedding cake was created by Buckinghams ‘BeLoved’ wedding supplier, The Abigail Bloom Cake Company, London. Firstly Abi sketched out the cake by hand drawing each tier and adding in the delicate details of lace and sugar flowers: “The cake was created using 6 full height tiers with two half height tiers adorned with gold leaf, sugar peonies, roses, blossom flowers and hydrangeas. A total of seven 7” diameter cakes created the bottom tier and a ball of beautiful gold sugar hydrangeas was placed on the very top! The top tier was covered in edible sequins and another 3 tiers had gold appliqué lace. The ivory tiers were sprayed with a pearl white shimmer so every inch of the cake had a little something ‘extra’ about it. The bride wanted something glamorous with enormous impact but still elegant and not over the top. She loved the idea of edible gold leaf and edible sequins but wanted to preserve their colours of the day which were a pastel rose/blush, light blue and cream/ivory. In total the cake took approximately 70 hours to create with four flavours: • • • •
Valrhona sponge with Belgian chocolate ganache buttercream and salted caramel buttercream Lemon sponge with lemon drizzle, lemon curd and lemon buttercream Madagascan vanilla bean sponge with white chocolate ganache buttercream and passion fruit curd Red velvet sponge with Madagascan vanilla bean buttercream
Guests were given a portion of cake to take home which we wrapped and boxed up with stunning personalised labels. The Orangery at Kensington Palace obviously has very tight security so timings were a little tight. We only had 20 minutes to construct the cake! an tell us a little something about your background. I was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch Indonesian mother and an English father, so I’m fluent in both languages. I originally set out to be a costume designer, as I’d always loved theatre, but at fashion college I realised I could have a more productive career in bridal wear, which is not so far from costume really! I became creatively frustrated working for other bridal wear labels, so in 2002, after 10 years in NYC, I came back to the UK to launch my own label where I could design how I wanted. What do you love least about what you do? Administration, it’s never been my strong point, and there is surprisingly a lot to do with my work. And what do you love most about what you do? Seeing the models dressed backstage just before the fashion show starts; it’s when I really see my work come alive. Does the responsibility of your business ever scare you? Yes, of course it’s scary, but

I made a decision that this is what I want to do! How do you start your day? I do my stretch exercises first thing, followed by a coffee and a diazepam. What do you eat for breakfast? What is the absolute ‘must have’ at your wedding? NO children policy. If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would you be doing? I’d be an impressionist - it’s my party trick! If you could change one thing in the world what would it be? Oppression. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? My temper… I’m too passionate! Where do you start when choosing the best style for your big day? Bridal hair expert Alison Jenner has the answer...

hoosing your hair style should be a fun part to your wedding preparations. You’ve chosen your dress and everything is starting to fall into place. You’ve probably started a Pinterest board too but now you’re finding it filled with every style going and you’re nowhere nearer to choosing your favourite. This is the moment when I suggest to brides that they start to pin what they don’t like. As hairstylists this helps us clearly understand the direction you don’t want to go in! When you begin to think about the styles that might be right for you a good place to start is with your dress. The style you’ve chosen really will dictate what works best. Dresses with lots of intricate back detail or a very high collar best lend themselves to an updo. An updo can range across varying degrees of course but the main idea is to take the hair up and away from the detail of your dress. If your dress is strapless I always think a soft ‘hair down’ style to one side looks very pretty and can give you a little bit of security too if you’re feeling too uncovered. Dresses with just one strap to the side look fabulous with a side updo to the opposite side which balances out the look from both the front and the back. Most importantly this is your special day so take your time. There’s no need to rush. Build a relationship with your stylist and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Whichever

style you choose it should show you at your best and not totally overtake you. You’re getting married at a time when nearly anything is possible. If you have incredibly thin hair for example we can add extra hair for length or to thicken. And don’t be too disheartened if the style you’d set your heart on just isn’t you. It’s a little bit like finding your dress. Sometimes it’s the style you thought you’d never have that actually suits you the most! For me there is nothing nicer than when a bride-to-be and her Mum both cry when they finally see the style come together so be prepared for lots of emotions. For a flawless base I prepped the skin using Make Up For Ever Smoothing Primer. This smooths out any fine lines and pores. Next I used Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation in shade NC25, followed by a little Mac Studio Finish concealer in areas which needed a bit more coverage. This is a great long lasting base which gives full coverage whilst still looking natural. I set the base using Mac Pro Longwear Powder in Medium and a little light contouring using the Contouring Sticks from Smashbox Cosmetics and contour powders from Anastasia Beverley Hills gave a bit more definition to the face.
EYES
A good eye primer is essential to stop your eyeshadow from creasing and I used Benefit ‘Stay Don’t Stray’ to create a smooth canvas for the eye makeup. I used shadows from the new Urban Decay Smokey Eye palette to create a soft brown smokey look for Sarah. Avon Supershock Gel Liner Pencil (my all time favourite gel liner) was used to line the top and bottom waterlines and Ardell lashes in 118 finished off the dramatic eye makeup.
CHEEKS
I wanted a natural flushed look for Sarah’s makeup so I used two shades of blush, Mac Sunbasque and Dollymix. To add some subtle highlights to the cheekbones I used Kevyn Aucoin highlighting powder in Starlight (available from Space NK).
LIPS
I used Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Pencil in Pink Venus to outline Sarah’s lips before going over the whole lip area with the same pencil. This creates a base of colour to give the lipstick more depth. I wanted a bright lip colour for this look and I used Mac lipstick in the shade ‘Impassioned’, a vivid fuschia pink. A little clear gloss from Bobbi Brown was added to the centre of the lips to give a full effect.
SETTING THE MAKEUP
Finally I set Sarah’s makeup using Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray. This guarantees your makeup will stay put and last through any tears. (Bottom Right) Hugo - Head of Security, props assistant, biscuit monitor and all round cutie pie.

rowing flowers, picking them and using them for weddings is possibly the most satisfying thing I have ever done. The thrill of the cutting patch in the early morning sunshine, the smells and the quiet yet noisiness of the bees and the hover-flies doing their thing is bliss! The Mrs Umbels patch is slowly but surely expanding every year. This year masses of perennials, roses, salvia and peonies sit beautifully with the foliage herbs such as mint and rosemary. Annuals such as cornflowers provide a riot of colour in blue, pink, white and burgundy and then there is the Mrs Umbels’ staple of Ammi majus, absolutely one of my all time favourite flowers and the reason we use it on some of our logos. Sweetpeas waft their delicious scent every time you walk past and these most delicate short lived flowers are perhaps the ones that I cherish the most, the very smell of summer. The cutting patch is not without its challenges. The patch is at the mercy of the weather which can destroy fragile blooms in one single torrent of rain, but where the weather hinders it also creates happy accidents. The wind and the birds spread the annual seeds throughout the patch so the cornflowers and sunflowers pop up in unusual places; the seasons make blooms earlier or later or sometimes help to prolong the flowering season. The resounding success this summer has been the gorgeous perennial lilac blue Scabious. It flowered for three months since May and we have harvested masses of beautiful, delicate blooms, Although the harvest has slowed the old flower heads now turn into the most amazing seed heads which are perfect for an Autumn wedding. In our own little way we are championing British flowers and hope that one day every single wedding will be created purely from our little patch of floral heaven. www.mrs-umbels.co.uk

hen it comes to cake we’re a fussy bunch here at Buckinghams HQ so when we’re on the hunt to find fab cake suppliers it takes more than a pretty cupcake to get our stamp of approval. The first thing we check before we even taste any cake is that the supplier is registered with the Environmental Health as they are legally obliged to do. If they aren’t registered that ends the conversation. Furthermore we’re only interested in suppliers rated 4 or 5 by the Food Standards Agency. Any rating below that doesn’t get our thumbs up. So when we spotted some rather super looking cakes by Victoria’s Cake Company in Market Harborough, Leicestershire we were delighted to discover they are fully registered and received the top mark of 5 by the F.S.A. The Wedding Cake
Cake maker Helen Alborn shares 12 important questions to ask your cake supplier 1. Is my wedding date available?
Small wedding cake suppliers book up fast especially for summer months so once you’ve confirmed your venue it’s time to book in your cake. This isn’t a confirmed booking until a deposit is paid and the final design and flavours can be discussed during a consultation.
2. Can you help if I have a fixed budget? It’s best to explain your budget right from the start before sending a photograph of a cake extravaganza you’d love. Remember it’s the intricacy of the design and time it takes that effects the overall cost. Some decorators will say prices start at £x and others will work out a solution which fits your budget and theme. 3. Do you offer cake tastings?
It’s usual to be invited for a cake tasting and a consultation at a convenient time to discuss design ideas. You will be asked what flavours you’d like to try. Some bakers may charge for this service but this is usually deducted from the price should you proceed to order a cake.
4. Do you bake your own cakes? This may seem an odd question but it’s fair to know exactly what you’re paying for. Professionals bake cakes from scratch using fresh ingredients and offer an extensive range of flavours and fillings including for those with dietary requirements. Others may only use cake mixes perhaps adding fresh milk and eggs and some simply decorate ready-made cakes.
5. Are you registered with the council and what is your
food hygiene rating? All cake suppliers should have no problem with you seeing their kitchen and showing you their business addressed star rating issued by the Environmental Health Department of their local council. This provides peace of mind that your cake baker reaches the high standards you’d expect for hygiene, but remember this is no guarantee of food quality.
6. Can I see a portfolio of recent cakes?
Every cake supplier should happily show you photographs and reviews of actual wedding cakes they’ve made recently for clients and this will give you a good idea about their skills, quality, consistency and versatility. Social media has made this easy for you to research in advance using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Just make sure it’s their work you’re seeing!
7. How will you display our cake?
Many venues have cake stands that you can use and cake suppliers may also have a selection of stands to hire for a small charge. These may require a deposit, refunded on the safe return of the stand. Your supplier may also liaise with your florist if you’d like to use fresh flower arrangements.
8. Do you deliver?
Most cake suppliers will insist on delivering and setting up your wedding cake to guarantee it arrives in perfect condition. Local delivery is often included in the price.

11. When do we pay you? After a cake tasting and consultation, a quote will be put together and sent to you itemising everything that was discussed including the venue, set up time, cake flavours, design, stand hire, delivery, terms and conditions etc. A non refundable deposit is usually paid to confirm the booking and your supplier will indicate when the final payment is due. 12. What happens on the delivery day?
Your cake should be delivered and assembled at your venue at the time and place arranged. An Allergy Advice Sheet will be given to the venue indicating any common allergens which may be present in the cake should any guests need to know, along with details of inedible content and storage boxes for leftovers and decorations. If the budget doesn’t stretch to real Champagne for your guests to make their toast but you fancy a glass or two on your big day there’s no reason why you can’t have a bottle of the real thing just on the Top Table. The same goes for anything else you want to spoil yourselves with. From favours to more elaborate centre pieces it’s your day so treat yourselves to the things you want.
Although most family members will bury the hatchet for your wedding, many couples often have the difficulty of positioning guests who simply don’t get on. In an ideal world you’d place them as far away from each other as possible but if etiquette calls for them to be on key tables at the same end of the room then do the next best thing and position them outside of each others eye-line. Seat them with their backs to each other to lower tensions... at least during the meal! Use any pillars in the room to your advantage. If you’re seriously worried about problems occurring talk to both parties and explain your concerns. If they don’t feel they can behave themselves for your sake then maybe they should reconsider attending. It’s your day and you need to be conf ident it’ll go your way.

“WHICH ONE’S THE GROOM?” Would you wear the same dress as your bridesmaids? Of course not. So why should your Groom look identical to his best man and ushers? Not everyone at your wedding will know who is who so make sure he stands out. Matching suits are fine but kit him out in a different waistcoat or tie. Give a pop of colour to his guys by choosing the lead colour from your wedding palette and put your man in white, gold, silver or neutral tones to complement your dress. If you’re wearing red, do all that in reverse!
TABLE PLANNING TIPS
1. Place families with pushchairs and young children on chairs nearest the walls ideally near
the exit. This gives more room for bags and greater ease of covert escape for an unexpected nappy change! 2. You probably already know which friends will create the noisy table! Put their table right to the back of the reception room. The atmosphere will carry forward to your other guests and liven up your room. 3. High chairs should ideally go against a wall. It’s safer for babies not to be placed in the main thoroughfare of waiters carrying hot liquids. Plus food tends to go airborne from high chairs and no-one wants granddad slipping on a piece of stray banana!
WAISTCOATS RIDING HIGH The purpose of a waistcoat is to hide the bottom shirt buttons and the trouser belt. There’s nothing worse than seeing a smart waistcoat with a white shirt billowing out from beneath it. This is wrong and looks awful on your photographs. Whether buying or hiring a suit make sure the waistcoat sits just below the lowest part of the belt buckle to keep things looking neat and tidy. It’s important the guys remove mobile phones and wallets from their pockets when having their photos taken and of course - always check that fly is up!
PLEASE BE SEATED
Our big no-no right now is benches. Think seriously about these. They may look great on a blog post you saw but they’re simply not suitable for all guests. Here’s why... 1. Anyone with a bad back, elderly or pregnant will not appreciate sitting for two hours or more on a bench and some guests with serious back issues may flatly refuse to go through the agony. If you insist on benches have chairs in place for those needing some extra back support. 2. Manoeuvring oneself backwards off a bench without kneeing a tightly packed neighbour in the head as you struggle to get your leg over is no mean feat. Add a short tight skirt to the mix and that’s one interesting struggle not to show your knickers to the entire room. Guests will need to get cosy to leave their seat mid-meal and be adept at getting their leg over. 3. Don’t forget wheelchairs, hi-chairs and parents who want to manoeuvre buggies and bouncers between seats. A chair is simply easier.

B
y the time we turned into the drive leading up to Ragdale Hall we were ready for her to fold us into her arms and say ‘there, there, we’ll make it all better’. Work had taken it out of us. We were battered and bruised, stressed with shoulders up above our ears and ready to hide ourselves away from the world albeit for just one night. We’d booked the ‘Overnight Reviver Break’ and I for one was hoping Ragdale would live up to all she promised. Could she perform a sweet miracle and help me unwind and put aside the responsibilities that awaited me beyond the gate way down
there at the end of the drive? Would it be possible for me to relax for the first time in over twelve months? Could I of all people breath out a deep sigh of ‘aaaahh’? Twenty four hours would tell. I’d taken along my husband who at first put up a fight saying spas are for ladies and it’s not quite ‘his thing’. His first priority upon arrival in the beautiful panelled reception hall was to check out the menu framed neatly outside the dining room door. Needless to say he was delighted to discover that Ragdale served ‘real food.. and there’s pudding!’ Safe in the knowledge he could maintain a salad free existence for the next two days we checked in. We were invited to make our way to Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Issue 2 Page 68
the Garden Room where we would be greeted and offered an introductory tour of all the facilities. I recommend you do this as the spa offers a wide range of activities and there’s a reason you’re given a map! Our guide was very knowledgeable and showed us everything from the boutique, Thermal Spa, The Retreat (with hammocks and beanbags for the ultimate nap), shops and dining room. We were booked in for a treatment that afternoon so it was helpful to know where to go and what to do. We decided to visit our room before lunch and drop off the bags. We were booked into a Superior Double with en-suite bathroom and a small balcony
overlooking the front of the property. We like lots of fresh air so this was a real treat but do check when you book as not all rooms have this little extra. Because of my hotel background I’m very fussy about hotel rooms. If something’s amiss I’ll usually spot it so it was lovely to walk in to a clean, bright, beautifully furnished bedroom decorated in fresh lime and raspberry colours. The bathroom was a good size and well appointed with a large mirror and excellent lighting. There was plenty of wardrobe space, tea and coffee making facilities (tick two for the husband) and a flat screen TV (tick three!). We unpacked, freshened up and headed downstairs for lunch.
We love our food, hence the love handles, and Ragdale does not disappoint. The panelled dining room is bright and airy. We were shown to a window table for two which is such a treat for us as we love to dine out but don’t get the chance very often. Crisp white linen and silverware made for a formal setting but the atmosphere was light and relaxed, mainly because most diners were wearing bathrobes and slippers. What new joy was this to dine out on super food whilst virtually in your PJs! We were still in our ‘real world’ clothing at this point but we didn’t feel left out. Indeed robed and be-slippered guests mixed happily with lycra clad gym addicts and there were Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Issue 2 Page 69
convivial ‘hello, how are you’s’ between the tables. Our waiter was smart, attentive and helpful. The service was very good and the staff were friendly without being intrusive. We had three courses for lunch served from a fabulous buffet. Plenty of fresh salads, meats, fish and seafood and a good selection of hot food including pasta and rice dishes. There was a choice of desserts too so those with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed. It’s rather comforting to know the chefs have already counted the calories for you and prepared wholesome yet hearty food to tuck into and enjoy! After our lazy lunch we were starting
to unwind and returned to our room to change into our robes. I was beginning to feel well on my way to a stress free break ensconced in this hideaway from the pressures and strains of the real world. Little did I know that my husband was about to crash through my fragile window of peace and serenity. “I’ve forgotten my trunks” For the love of.... were we never to be allowed to float across these scented corridors and find some tranquillity? The beauty of Ragdale is you don’t have to pack much in the first place and yet of all the things you do need to bring, swimwear is at the top of the list. First stop then - the shop. Wall to wall items of ladies swimwear, bags, shoes and clothing and I thought all hope was lost and I would have to reclothe myself in my real world clothing and drive home to collect his wretched trunks but just like a gentle mother with calm assurance a voice said ‘we sell gentleman’s swimwear too’. I could have kissed that boutique consultant. Albeit a small selection there was indeed a corner of the boutique stocked for those gentleman who had forgotten their knicks and knacks. Ragdale had thought of everything. Whatever you’ve forgotten from your togs to your toothbrush you can purchase it here. Once kitted out in his new swim shorts we were off. It does feel a bit odd at first wandering around in your slippers but as everyone else is virtually doing the same thing the feeling soon passes. Remembering the childhood rule of ‘don’t swim after a meal’ we decided some exploring would be a good way to ease ourselves into Ragdale life. There’s a super gift shop with some really lovely gifts, jewellery and keepsakes plus the perfumery is a treat and stocks the high end brands you would expect. We visited the Retreat once more for a swing in the hammock before heading off for some serious sensory therapy. I’d been looking forward to trying out the Thermal Spa. I’m more of a spa than a spin girl so the idea of languishing in the candle pool and chilling out in the sauna was my dream come true. This area of Ragdale really is the highlight of your stay if you crave relaxation and some time out, and rightly so Ragdale are very proud of it. There’s a lovely atmosphere at Ragdale in the evening. Members pass you by pumped up and ready to hit the gym after the rigours of their working day whilst overnight guests float about in a more relaxed state; some heading for a late treatment, others for dinner and no doubt many for an early night. It’s hard work all this lazing about so it wasn’t long before we too decided it was time to tread the wooden hill. Tucked up in our comfy bed I fell asleep reading up on the many packages and offers available and planning our next visit. Breakfast is served in bed as though Ragdale hasn’t spoiled you enough by this point. You make your choice the day before and hand your slip in to reception. Promptly at your chosen time there’s a tap on the door and breakfast is served. I chose an orange, mango and banana smoothie and the popular Atholl Brose - toasted oats, honey, yogurt and raspberries. My other half, who was topping up on some overdue TV time, had the bacon tomato and Emmental wrap. Breakfast, although tasty, was tinged with disappointment because today was going home day. We toyed with booking in for another night but work commitments wouldn’t allow. Wishing not to waste a second of my
remaining time at Ragdale I booked in for a Hair and Scalp mini treatment in the Beauty Express which offers mini treatments at what I thought were very reasonable prices allowing you to indulge a little without breaking the bank. We considered visiting the gym but decided we needed to leave something for next time so another leisurely day was spent in the Thermal Spa. By early afternoon it was time to head for home. Ragdale Hall had indeed fulfilled all her promises to me and more and I felt refreshed and ready to take on life’s challenges once again. For those of you burned out from juggling wedding planning and work life or if you fancy a special break with your mum or a prewedding getaway with your groom then pop Ragdale Hall on your list of options. And if you want a weekend away with your closest maids then a visit to Ragdale could tick the boxes although this is not party central and there’s no dancing on the tables until dawn. hoosing your wedding transport requires much more than liking the colour and counting four wheels. There are many considerations to ensure your wedding gets off to a perfect start. What should I consider first? What day of the week and time are you getting married? Will you hit the school run or rush hour? Are there future road works or closures planned for your route? How many cars do we need? Twenty minutes to get bridesmaids to the venue, added time for them to get out of the car and twenty minutes to get back. That’s nearly an hour for the car to return to collect the bride. We’d recommend a maximum ten minute journey one way if you’re looking to book one car to do two journeys. If the distance is further we’d recommend hiring two cars to avoid bridesmaids waiting an hour or more for the bride’s arrival. If your budget won’t stretch to two cars then ask a friend with a saloon car that can be valeted and dressed in ribbons. How do the seating arrangements work? Ask your provider how many passengers the car will seat comfortably. Our Classic Cars seat four passengers but for the most comfort we recommend the bride travel in
the car with only one escort. Also, consider the room required for your gown – you don’t want to arrive a crumpled mess. For bridesmaids and other guests we can seat three in the rear of the car and one in the front next to our chauffeur. Is the boot big enough for all our luggage? Check the boot space if you’re planning to take extra luggage to the venue. You may need to make alternative arrangements.

Having a travel plan also helps suppliers and your bridal party know their deadlines. Should we inspect the cars before the big day? Being prepared for every eventuality is why we would advise couples to meet their wedding transport providers to ask any ‘what if ’ questions and find out exactly what the car can and cannot do. Getting to the wedding ceremony on time and in comfort is paramount so we always arrange pre-wedding meetings with our couples. Jack Quenby of Jackstar Weddings, describes the latest ‘must have’ service that’s taking weddings by storm.

ello I’m Jack. I’m a Wedding Host & DJ at Jackstar Weddings. I’ve been DJing for over twelve years and worked at my first wedding almost ten years ago. Thankfully the wedding was for a family friend as although I had a pretty good idea about what music to play to fill the dance floor, I was clueless when it came to wedding traditions, etiquette and spotlight moments! Needless to say, the happy couple were thrilled by my performance but I knew deep down I could do better. Since that day all those years ago, I’ve been continually learning and developing my role as a Wedding Host. I’ve attended numerous seminars, courses and training workshops in order to refine my skills as a DJ and improve my understanding of weddings - all with the sole purpose of sharing my knowledge and experience to give the best service possible to the brides and grooms who entrust me with the most important day of their lives. If the words ‘Wedding Host’ meant nothing to you until now then you
probably didn’t know people like me existed let alone what we do. That’s because the role of Wedding Host is a relatively new addition to wedding world. In short, a Wedding Host combines the services of a DJ and Master of Ceremonies and acts as an on-the-day spokesperson for the bride and groom in a way that is less formal than a traditional toastmaster. We help you both coordinate and present your day from the ceremony right through to the end of the party. The number of DJ’s offering this service is growing, but before now options were limited. If you didn’t opt for the traditional toastmaster in a red jacket, many on-the-day duties would often be left to the best man or ushers or in some cases the venue or catering manager. No doubt you’ve been to a wedding and witnessed someone tap a glass or bang on the table and shout some kind of introduction. In the case of a venue manager, MCing is likely to be just one of the “hats” they have to wear for the day and possibly

one of their lowest priorities. This can lead to impersonal and sometimes ineffective announcements. Similarly, although the best man or ushers are able to offer a more personal touch, unless they’re comfortable with public speaking they may lack the effective professionalism of a wedding host. Quite simply our role is to make sure you get those all important and often overlooked details right to ensure your guests have a great time. If the enjoyment of your family and friends is one of your top priorities let me give you an insight into my world. your wedding day entertainment and all the key moments that will happen throughout the day such as cutting the cake and throwing your bouquet. The decisions you make will affect how your family and friends feel from the moment your guests arrive until your guests depart. Will they laugh? Will they cry? What will they remember the most? As an example let’s consider how you’ll plan and stage your grand entrance into your wedding breakfast. This example may not be to your taste, which is fine - there’s no right or wrong way to do it and the options available to you are endless - my job is to create the mood, feeling and style that perfectly
suits your personalities. We’ll start by selecting a piece of music to which you’ll enter the room. Your choice can be anything you like. In my experience something with a good build up and lots of energy works best. Together we’ll look at the logistics leaving nothing to chance. Which entrance will you use? Are there any obstacles in your path? Next we’ll discuss the different ways and words to introduce you to your guests and finally we’ll put the timings in place. Between an assistant
and myself we’ll make sure you’re in the right place at the right time on the day as well as co-ordinating with your photographer, videographer and anyone else who needs to be involved in your big moment. Live music for your wedding? DJ Paul Martyn explains why your checklist shouldn’t just be a set list.
ooking the music for your wedding can be tricky. Leaving aside the wide choice of musical styles to choose from you’d do well to think about the questions many brides and grooms never consider; will the act we’ve booked turn up? Will they be appropriately dressed? Will they have the right equipment? Will they listen to my requests and see my vision? The musician or DJ you choose shouldn’t just be a great performer. They have to be someone you can trust, rely on and a true professional. Do your homework and make the effort to check out their testimonials. How easy were they to work with; were they well presented, punctual and did
they listen to what the couple wanted? As for choosing your preferred musical style, where do you start? The music at a wedding is there to entertain you and your guests be it subtle ambiance during the pre-dinner drinks or the wedding breakfast or something to dance to during the evening. Your first consideration should be ‘who is attending?’. Most weddings have a wide range of guests from elderly relatives to very young children, so musical diversity is important if they’re all going to feel included. A professional DJ, singer or band will already have a good idea about what works and will know how to entertain most crowds effectively. Balance their experience against your own input of favourite

tunes and your family and friends will be in for a great night. One more consideration you can’t afford to ignore is whether the venue has any restrictions. Often space and set up times are limited so be sure to check the act you book can comfortably fit in the ‘stage’ area and can be set up in reasonable time, whether it’s a DJ, solo performer or band. Most importantly be aware of sound limiters and the effect they can have on a party. Over the past few years it’s become common practice for venues to monitor sound levels or install limiters and these can be especially difficult to work with for louder acts such as bands. There is nothing worse for the energy and flow of a party than the music constantly
cutting out, so check with the venue before booking any music. If the venue has a limiter, the chances are you’re better off looking at a DJ or solo performer. If your heart is set on a live band then choose a venue without a limiter to be sure you get the best from your evening entertainment. Always talk through your ideas with any potential musician or DJ and use your gut instincts as to whether you feel they’re right for you. A good musician will guide you in the right direction while keeping your ideas in mind. Honest advice from a seasoned experienced professional is invaluable. It’s one thing to imagine how it might work and quite another once you have the perspective of someone who’s performed at hundreds of weddings. The music you choose is the soundtrack to your wedding. Your choice will hugely impact your guests’ experience if delivered with sensitivity and a real understanding of

TOP 10 TIPS ‘RAIN’
2 FLOODING Ask all, but especially waterside venues about their flooding history. Has the land ever flooded? This may sound extreme but the field out of my office window quickly transforms into a lake when it rains heavily. If the venue’s land is prone to serious flooding ask them what their Plan B is. 3 PARKING How far is the walk from the car park to the marquee? Your friends might embrace the rainy festival spirit but it’s unfair to expect elderly guests to walk long distances in the rain. No one needs granny getting pneumonia because of your poor planning! Also consider whether the car park is a hard surface or grass? Guests don’t
want to be pushing their cars out of the mud at one in the morning wearing their best outfit! Check for hard standing parking where possible. You really don’t want a mud bath to end your celebrations. 4 FLOORING If you’re having a tipi or marquee check with your provider about the type of flooring they provide. Squishing around on soggy matting is no fun. Details like this often make the difference between quotes so before you rush off to book the cheapest, compare the quote like for like. 5 BROLLIES AND WELLIES Dennisson Classic Cars pack large brollies in the boot of their cars and large ground cover mats to protect your dress when you get into or exit the car. Check with your transport provider what they provide in case of rain. Popping your wellies in the boot wouldn’t go amiss either in case of serious downpours. 6 TLC FOR GUESTS Provide large brollies for your ushers to shelter guests from the church or venue to avoid them getting drenched and sitting in wet clothes all day. If the forecast is really bad consider buying festival ponchos for
your ushers to keep them dry if they don’t have a suitable raincoat and have some on standby too for your guests just in case. They are cheap to buy and won’t break the bank. 7 COAT RAILS Hire or buy a few coat rails and hangers to avoid dripping coats being placed over your beautiful chair covers. Ikea sell a range of affordable coat rails although some are sturdier than others so check the reviews! A good hostess should allocate a suitable place for coats whatever the weather so check with your venue/tent providers to see if they provide this as standard. If not, get on it and make it happen. 8 PHOTO OOOOPS If you’re booking a venue because of outdoor photo opportunities you’d do well to check inside the venue too for suitable photo spots if you can’t get outside. Speak with your photographer too and if the inside doesn’t float your boat decide if you want to risk it. 9 TOWELS For DIY outdoor weddings take spare towels to dry off garden benches and chairs when the rain stops. 10 LITTLE ONES Don’t just plan for outdoor games. Organise an indoor games table piled with board games, puzzles, crayons and toys to keep them occupied and position it far away from the cake table - you don’t need a smashed cake to add to your rainy day! You can’t control the weather but you can plan for it so make your Plan B as much fun as your Plan A. Simply embrace the weather whatever the day throws at you.
