An employer’s guide to the

Product Design and Development Engineer Manufacturing Engineering Degree Apprenticeship BEng (Hons) Engineering Design

Degree Apprenticeships combine university study and work-based learning to enable apprentices to gain a full bachelor’s degree. This provision of an academic undergraduate degree is integrated with experience, practice and learning in the workplace. An apprentice has paid employment status and does not pay any training costs or student fees. Degree apprenticeships are co-designed by employers ensuring that apprentices are equipped with the skills employers need and for their own future career. These higher apprenticeship courses in Engineering Design enable students to achieve an HNC/D; providing a foundation stage of the knowledge elements in the competence qualification. They support the fundamental scientific and mathematical principles that equip apprentices with the understanding required to operate effectively and efficiently at a high level within this sector. Successful apprentices will then go on to complete a BEng (Hons) in: • Engineering Design (Mechanical Engineering) • Engineering Design (Electrical Engineering) • Engineering Design (Production Engineering) Apprentices can then join a MEng programme as a progression route; meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer.

Course Structure This apprenticeship structure not only meets the required Apprenticeship Standards for Manufacturing Engineer and Product Design and Development Engineer but also matches with the University’s philosophy and strategy which includes outward facing, externality and industrial involvement, providing students with the necessary qualifications to underpin knowledge and progress in their chosen apprenticeship career. The programme is run in partnership with selected FE colleges providing a flexible course of study.* Mechanical Engineering Year one

Entry Requirements

Apprenticeships are work-based so training and assessment predominantly takes place within your business, however 20 per cent of an apprentice’s time must be dedicated towards their study. This must be part of their contracted hours but can be delivered through day release, block, residential and distance learning.

Individual employers will identify entry requirements in terms of previous qualifications, training or other criteria. Candidates will typically have 5 GCSEs as well as A levels.

This degree apprenticeship programme takes four to six years to complete on a day release basis.

Tuition fees The apprenticeship levy will be paid by employers in any sector with a pay bill of more than £3 million per year. Those employers will be able to use their apprenticeship levy funds to access degree apprenticeships from higher education providers. Non-levy paying employers will receive up to 90 per cent funding towards the costs of apprenticeships. Higher and degree apprenticeships can be offered to anyone over the age of 19. There is no upper age limit and no cost to the apprentice.

Mature applicants who have gained relevant skills through a wide range of vocational qualifications or responsible experience and experiential learning will also usually be considered.

Working in Partnership We work as partners, providing a key account manager and dedicated apprenticeship team to support your business and employees throughout the apprenticeship journey. Your apprentice’s link tutor will visit them in the workplace to support their learning. We will provide a full range of study options to students that meet your business needs including block delivery at University, day release, residential, blended and distance (online) learning.
