C
elebrating his 65th year as a professional artist, Al Lachman continues to blaze his own trail onto the national and Bucks County art scene. Originally from New York City, Lachman has lived and worked in the New Hope area for the last 20 years. “I have sold my paintings throughout the U.S. and abroad, but this is where I want to be.” Lachman’s exhibition for his 65th Annual Show, Landscapes of the Mind and Soul, will be on display from November 9–December 29, 2019 at his gallery in Peddler’s Village. The 65th Annual Show will seek to reflect the full range of his paintings from realism to abstraction. Lachman explains, “All art is abstract to some degree. It is either one percent abstract or one hundred percent abstract or somewhere in between. We are all unique…there is no one that is exactly like another, and it is that uniqueness within the artist that manifests itself into the work, therefore making it a work of art.” Lachman paints every day. He is driven by his insatiable desire to do so. Having studied art at Syracuse University, the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League of NYC, as well as an instructor at the League, most of what he has learned

and accomplished he has achieved on his own. As Degas aptly said, “You spend your first lifetime learning how to do it, and your second lifetime unlearning everything that you were taught … and that’s when you really become an artist.” Each beginning of a painting is different for Lachman, and he works with many mediums (oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, etc.) often within the same painting. Lachman explains, “Each medium has its own personality … things it can do and things it cannot. So when I put them together in the same painting, I can achieve something truly unique. I am a morning painter. I get up and I go to work. I then say to myself … how can I paint this differently than I have ever painted it before? I challenge myself with the possibility of failure so that I can find new edges within myself … but I don’t allow it to fail. I stay with it, as long as it takes, until the magic is there.” “Painting is what I do … it is who I am. BARBARA LEWIS PORTRAITS & FINE ART

arbara Lewis is a professional artist residing in Buckingham, Pennsylvania. She is known for her landscapes, still lifes, but increasingly she paints portraits in oil. She says, “There is such beauty and depth to peoples' faces and it is a constant challenge to first capture what I see and then convey it successfully to the viewer. Light plays a key part in defining form and focus and oil paint is a rich and pliant tool for describing light and shadow. I like to achieve a strong likeness of my subject without being a photorealist. Using a "painterly realist" style, I might render a face with detail but a background with less focus and more feel.” Barbara’s inspiration comes from many artists, past and present. “I am amazed at the bravura of Franz Hals in his powerful portraits of important and everyday people. In person, the atmospheric chiaroscuro of Rembrandt is so evocative. Philip deLazlo inspires me with the movement and life he was able to bring into his many portraits, and with the obvious joy he got from a long art career. John Singer Sargent's work shows such virtuosity.” Barbara Lewis attended PAFA to improve her drawing and painting skills and continued that at Studio Incamminati, the atelier started by Nelson Shanks. She says, “I had been unable to find such classical training earlier in my career; it seemed to be so out of fashion. Finally, though, I was able to spend days at a time drawing and then painting from life. I was able to learn from other instructors about how to truly see and paint color. CHRISTIAN COREY, PLEIN AIR PAINTER

hristian Corey is a Plein Air painter from Perkasie who has been painting the bucolic countryside of Bucks County since the 1990s. Besides his enchanting landscapes, Chris also paints still lifes and seascapes. He has had several one man exhibitions and has exhibited in national exhibitions. He has been a member of The Philadelphia Sketch Club since 2001, a charter and advisory board member of the International Plein Air Painters and former regional editor of Plein Air Magazine. Chris has been featured in Bucks County Magazine and taught classes on painting in the great outdoors. He is now returning to his art after taking off for family obligations. he Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show highlights the very best in contemporary craft and design. Show dates are November 8-10, 2019 with a Preview Party on November 7. ean Childs Buzgo’s new Solo Exhibition, Explorations, is her largest and most diverse show to date. Her newest body of work will have over 40 new pieces created over the last 18 months. I
n December 1978, David M. Mancuso Antiques opened its doors in the historic former Solebury Baptist Church on Route 202 in New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. David’s interest in antiques started at an early age when as a teenager, he started frequenting antiques shops. “I used to go to the Brimfield, Massachusetts markets and camp out in the back of my van with my Golden Retriever, Rusty,” recalled Mancuso. “I opened my first shop in the mid-seventies in Red Bank, New Jersey.” At age 21, the young entrepreneur discovered Bucks County and its vibrant antiques and art scene. One year later, he opened his shop at the Old Church. In the early 1980s, Mancuso began exhibiting at major antiques shows. By the mid 1980s, the business started to cultivate many advantageous relationships with collectors, decorators and dealers; many of who still frequent the shop today. By the mid 1990s, long-time friends, father and son Jonas and Richard Ewing, came on board to assist at the antiques shop, supplying additional and diverse inventory to the already fabulous stock offered at the Old Church. Today, the shop maintains an ever-changing inventory of a wide range of antiques including American & Continental furniture, country / high country, decorative, accessories, paintings, prints, garden, architectural, modern, folk art, pottery, glass, religious, textiles and much more. n 1889 the painter William Lathrop came to Bucks County and founded an artist colony that would later be known as the New Hope School of Pennsylvania Impressionism. Bucks County, its inimitable light qualities and spirited scenery of all seasons attracted artists from far and wide. Painters like Henry Snell, Edward Redfield, Daniel Garber, George Sotter, John Folinsbee, Harry Leith-Ross, Antonio Martino, Fern Coppedge, Rae Sloan Bredin, Kenneth Nunamaker, Walter Baum and others came to paint, to settle, and to contribute their magic to the evolution of Bucks County’s thriving artistic and intellectual culture that remains vibrant to this day. The Beauty of Bucks County, an exhibition of Pennsylvania Impressionism, was inspired by preservation efforts of the land, the history, and the cultural heritage of Bucks County. One local organization’s dedication to the protection of significant open spaces, natural resources, and our historic heritage has resulted in the preservation of nearly 15,000 acres of open space, farmland, wildlife habitat, and important watershed areas in Bucks and Montgomery counties. It seemed like a natural choice to partner 110

with Heritage Conservancy in this special exhibition and dedicate a portion of the proceeds to their mission. The Beauty of Bucks County opens to the public on October 6, 2019, following an invitational celebration to honor community members and members of Heritage Conservancy.
