Experience Art In A New Way Art & Antiques
ArtWRKD
is a self-proclaimed “Art Consortium.”
ArtWRKD takes old ideas of artistic offerings, such as art gallery and workshop space and turns it on its head. The space is welcoming, celebrating the history of the building it inhabits, which has a long history as a home for creative minds. Originally built in 1896 by E.F. Church, the brick building was the home of the Newtown Enterprise, the original newspaper of Newtown.
The art ranges from wearable, to visual, to functional. Ashara Shapiro has weaved these artists throughout, complimenting their visions and telling their stories. Ashara knows these artists well, in fact, she has hand chosen them and can speak on their intentions in creating the work. You will not see this work anywhere else; her focus is on originals or limited series.
ArtWRKD has an experiential energy. You can also watch Ashara work on her own brand ARecherche in her studio on site where she does custom work as well as creating wearable art. Her future goal is to have artist-in-residence space, including a granted opportunity for a new up and coming artist that is funded by her network of Founding Members. There is a space for workshops. Ashara also is carving out space for teen empowerment workshops, focusing on expression. There is a limited number of studio memberships available to in the space which includes discounts on public workshops.
Ashara has many events in the works that will offer an opportunity to experience art in a new way including a Wearable Art Fashion Show that will take place at the Historic Newtown Theater in the Spring, a Master’s Show, New Artist Show and a Spoken Word as Art Show. ArtWRKD is located at 126 South Street Suite 300, Newtown PA; 646-924-7394. For more information, visit www.Artwrkd.com.
Photo: Kim BillingsleyA Forgotten Woman Of American Modernism
American artist Peter Miller (1913-1996) was born Henrietta Myers. She changed her name to Peter shortly after concluding her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1934 and her marriage to fellow artist Earle Miller in 1935. Miller is classified as an American Modernist, a reputation she earned for having shown at the prestigious gallery and premiere showcase for Surrealist painting of Julien Levy in New York in the 1940s. Reviewers of her exhibitions noted the unmistakable influence of the artists Joan Miró, whose work she owned and whom she knew, and Arthur Carles, whom she studied with, and sources in Native American culture, which came from her shared time
between her home state of Pennsylvania and New Mexico.
She and her husband considered New Mexico their spiritual home. Being neighbors of the indigenous people in the Santa Fe area, their crafts and religious beliefs fascinated Peter and the reliance of Native Americans upon the land and the animals permeated her work for most of her career. Their belief that all creatures could serve as intermediaries in communication with the spiritual world, inspired Miller to incorporate their symbols in her own paintings, along with signs drawn from their pottery and local petroglyphs. The Miller’s intimate familiarity with the customs, rituals, and ceremonies, were contributed to their unique access through their friendship with writer Edith Warner and Tilano Montoya, a Native American from the San Ildefonso Pueblo.
Until recently, Peter Miller has been a forgotten figure within the history of American modernism, which three recent exhibitions, Coming Home, Coming Home Again in Santa Fe, NM, and Gratz Gallery’s introduction of Miller’s work at its home gallery in Doylestown, PA, as well as a fully illustrated, comprehensive monograph on the artist hope to rectify.

Al Lachman Celebrates 68 Years Of Painting
AlLachman is celebrating his 68th year as a professional artist with his annual show at the Lachman Gallery. Al Lachman continues to blaze his own trail onto the national and Bucks County art scene. Originally from New York City, Lachman has lived and worked in the New Hope area for the last 23 years and continues to create one-of-a-kind paintings in various mediums (oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, etc.) often within the same painting.
A painting by Lachman will not only capture your imagination but will also become the focal point of the room in which it is hung. Each beginning of a painting is different for Lachman. He explains, “Each medium has its own personal-
ity … things it can do and things it cannot. So when I put them together in the same painting, I can achieve something truly unique. I am a morning painter. I get up and I go to work. I then say to myself … how can I paint this differently than I have ever painted it before? I challenge myself with the possibility of failure so that I can find new edges within myself … but I don’t allow it to fail. I stay with it, as long as it takes, until the magic is there.”
So mark your calendar and be sure you visit this show from November 12–December 18, 2022. The Lachman Gallery is located at Peddler's Village (Shop #44), Street Road, or Routes 202 & 263, Lahaska, PA. For more information, call 215-7945500 or visit www.allachman.com.
Made To Last Generations
RaymondJames Antiques specializes in American and English 18th & Early 19th Century period antique furniture and accessories. Their inventory of fine antiques is constantly changing and there is always something new. Raymond James says, “I look for period antique furniture, of quality, with no major restoration. I sell for less or slightly above what a new piece would cost. Everyone knows new furniture does not hold its value, because after a short period of time you cannot sell it for what you paid. Why wouldn’t you want something that is not only beautiful but is made to last for generations? Buying Antiques and living with them is what I’m all about. I believe there is no sense in having antiques that you are afraid to use. My pieces have character and warmth, which makes a room lived in and feel comfortable.” Raymond James has been one of Bucks County’s most successful antique dealers for over 30 years.
Raymond James Antiques is located at 5791 York Rd., Lahaska, PA. His hours are Thursday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Tuesday & Wednesday and Monday by appointment. For more information, call 215-794-9494 or visit www.raymondjamesantiques.info.

Turning a Half Log Into a Bowl
RobertEgee works almost exclusively with domestic hardwoods. He says, “I like to work with wood that has not yet dried … The wood I use from trees that have been cut down for various reasons but not specifically for turning purposes. Also, the wood I use for bowls, vessels, and vases is from trees indigenous to North America and occasionally, Hawaii. The only time I use exotic wood is for accent such as finals, where the tighter grain and wood hardness is needed to make the piece at all.”
On Robert Egee’s website, he shows how a bowl is turned from a half log. He explains the process and how he uses a gouge to do most of the shaping. He then uses scrapers to complete the interior. Before he removes the piece from the lathe, it is sanded up to 600 grit and the base is shaped.
The walls of his bowls are thin—3/16 to ¼ inch thick. He says,
“I feel the pieces look more elegant with the thinner walls and they are lighter to handle. There are times where the piece is large enough that the thinner walls just wouldn't look right so I will go thicker.” After the piece is turned it must be dried before Robert puts finish on them. “It is during this drying process that the pieces will change shape, sometimes going visibly oval or warping the rims.”
Finishing the piece involves Robert putting four coats of finish. He starts by putting the finish on the outside first and after it dries, he applies it to the inside. After the bowl is dry, he sands it with 400grit and repeats the process until all four coats are applied. The final sanding is done with 4000 grit and then the masterpiece is finished.
