Interior Designer Franca Caserta of Color by Design LLC can design your home blending the inside with the out • by Mary Beth Schwartz

T

he world of interior design is constantly evolving. Just recently, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) identified its trends for 2016. You’ll see the word sustainability being used more in design plans. Technology’s impact on design will continue to grow. New designs also will have resiliency and incorporate a holistic approach. In addition, designs will not be limited to a single location or culture, but be globalized. Most importantly, interior design will incorporate elements so we can better focus on own health and well-being. Like other designers in the field, Bucks County Interior Designer Franca Caserta, Owner of Color by Design LLC, let’s her work speak for itself. 36 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

Since 1991, Caserta has specialized in both commercial and residential projects. She is unique from other designers in that she also has experience with architectural work. “I incorporate the client’s ideas with my own expert vision to create a space that reflects their lifestyle. I render a space for its ultimate purpose, encompassing beauty and functionality,” Caserta says. According to Caserta, she can work with a wide range of budgets. Perhaps you need some help in planning your space with furniture, window treatments, and color. Maybe you would like her to customize a master plan and execute it to the hilt. Or would you rather design the house room by room over time? Whether it is architectural drawings for new construction or a renovation, or just jazzing up the family room, “I can take your interior space to the next level.” Homeowners like to give the bathroom a fresh new look. Caserta revitalized the first

floor of a client’s home in North Wales. The new bath has a timeless design featuring a quartz countertop, a glass shower door, and a new window for some much needed light. The tile design is a mixture of glass and stone with a nice field tile so that it looks balanced and gives it an interesting feel in keeping it neutral. Everyone loves spending time in a redesigned bedroom. For a home in Doylestown, Caserta gave new looks to bedrooms for the adults and kids. She designed a blue bedroom for a teenage boy. He was a big sports fan, so Caserta included elements such as a mural made of baseball bats and a framed Philadelphia Phillies baseball jersey. For the master bedroom, the homeowner always had wanted a serene white room. “I incorporated the different whites and textures. The silk drapes are flowing and romantic. The bedding is white and fluffy.” The white bedroom also has a dressing bench and two chairs for viewing the new fireplace design.

One of the most popular rooms to revive is the family room. For a family in Doylestown, Caserta redesigned a space with comfortable furniture, accent tables, rugs, wall color, and an eclectic mix of accessories. For a Craftsmen style home, also in Doylestown, she completely renovated the family room space. “They wanted a new design that incorporated pieces from their travels. The room has a Mission style feel, but also includes comfortable seating. Wall color, window treatments, carpet, pillows, accessories, and space planning were part of the design.” The kitchen is another popular room to redesign. For homeowners in New Hope, Caserta created an open and modern kitchen for a Craftsman style home. The timeless design includes maple cabinetry and a porcelain tile backsplash. The island area has stools, pendant lighting, black cabinetry, and a glass countertop from Canada. For a kitchen in Doylestown, she completely gutted a kitchen with white cabinetry and a very small island. The new kitchen now has a 12-foot island with blue pendant lighting, stainless steel appliances, and a unique backsplash made of glass and stone. There is maple cabinetry with a java stain. “It is so important to have a nice space for your kitchen. It is the bloodline, the heart of the home.” Look near the kitchen and you will find the dining room. Caserta has revamped her share of dining rooms. For a Doylestown family, she gave a new look to a dining room with unique furniture and lighting fixtures. “I like to mix and match furniture. I used a table from Restoration Hardware, and chairs from Ethan Allen. It was a fusion of two different styles.” The blue walls have a striated finish. “It looks 40 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

like cloth wallpaper, but in fact, it is actually paint. It adds texture to the room.” As you come and go from a home, you are likely to find more of Caserta’s work. She has designed some extreme staircases. For a New Hope home, she created a staircase that traveled from the basement all the way up to the second floor. This design features lots of shape and natural light. The grand banister is made of wrought iron, and the stairs are mahogany. Patterned glass windows mimic and wrap the staircase all of the way up. Uniquely shaped lights hang from the heights. For a family over

Living In The Kitchen

After waiting for almost 30 years, Doris and Michael Bartell now have a house with the kitchen that they had always dreamed of • by Mary Beth Schwartz

or years you researched—tore pages out of magazines, visited specialty stores, attended house tours. Along the way, you compiled a wishlist— high-end appliances, a clean contemporary design, a large island, lots of storage, European styled cabinetry, a fireplace, even a special nook for the dogs. After waiting for almost 30 years, Doris and Michael Bartell now have the kitchen that they had always dreamed about. Homeowners Doris and Michael Bartell moved to Buckingham in 1983. Their property, Sycamore Springs, was a former mill site. The Quaker manor house for the property, their home, dates to 1733. The Bartells renovated their small kitchen about five years later, but were on a budget. For years Doris thought about cooking in her dream kitchen. Then, she saw a Riegelsville kitchen on Houzz that

she fell in love with. She contacted Sullivan Building & Design Group and the Bartells were able to visit the home. “In the Riegelsville kitchen, Sullivan made a new kitchen merge with an old house. I liked the juxtaposition of the old and the new. It was a big decision for us to go ahead with our kitchen. We wanted to gain a larger kitchen and to open up the house to our beautiful backyard. If we were going to do it, I wanted it to be exceptional,” Doris says. “We took this historic farmhouse, with small dark rooms and low ceilings, and created a charming addition that seamlessly ties in old with the new. The addition has a new foyer, large modern kitchen, and a sitting area. A new dining room is located where the original kitchen once stood. The low ceilings, exposed

stonewalls, and fireplace create a warm and cozy space for enjoying meals. The stunning see-through fireplace visually makes sense of the transition from the high ceilings of the addition to the low ceiling of the original home,” says Designer Molly Hanisch. There are unique elements in each part of the addition. When you walk into the addition from outside, you come upon the foyer area. There is a bench to sit, hooks for hanging coats, baskets for storage of hats and gloves, and a bright chandelier. Nearby is the dining area, the site of the original kitchen. Sullivan was able to save an old built-in glass wall cabinet from the previous kitchen. There is seating for 10 at the table. A custom bench, along with the project’s doors, cabinetry, and wood-

work details, were created by Cider Press Woodworks, a division of Sullivan. Doris hired a decorator to have pillows and a cushion made for the bench. The material was selected from Restoration Hardware to match to chair coverings. The lounge area features a stately two-sided, see-through gas fireplace. You can see it from the kitchen and the dining area. There is thick, glossy, black glazed tile from Morocco covering the fireplace. The fireplace has a built-in TV on one side, and a decorative clock on the other. By the fireplace are two green leather chairs Doris selected from Blue Raccoon Home Furnishings in Lambertville. Near the lounge area is a bar area kept guard by a golden deer head. It features a wine cooler. Adjacent to the area is a full height pantry with pull-out drawers. Now let’s head over to the heart of the large and very open modern kitchen. It has radiant heat flooring, tall open beam ceilings,

lots of natural light, and levels of storage. There are windows above the sink offering panoramic views of the backyard and pool area. By the oversize fireplace sink is a dishwasher. The all-white cabinetry is custom with face framed inset doors with a small flat panel. The Bartells wanted the appliances not to be covered with paneling. There is a 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator, one standard wall oven, a warming drawer, and a Wolf cooktop. A pot filler is located above the cooktop. The kitchen is lit with recessed lighting, decorative overhead fixtures, and cable lights. The island with Danby marble top offers seating, shelves for cookbook storage, even an area on one of the end caps for the two Corgis to tuck in their bowls. There is a microwave drawer in the island as well. A wooden accent bowl from FX Dougherty adorns the island’s top. The kitchen’s surrounding countertops are honed absolute black granite. to a new deck area complete with a propane fire pit and comfortable outdoor furniture. The Bartells enjoy sitting on the deck and watching the birds come to the feeder. The project began in May of 2014 and ended in November. For this project, Sullivan Building & Design Group received the 2015 National Chrysalis Award, Addition Over $250,000. As for the Bartells, Doris says that they now live in their kitchen. You can see the Sycamore Springs project on Sullivan’s website at www.sullivanbuildinganddesigngroup.com.

Furnishing

Outdoor Rooms

Our thinking about our outdoor spaces is constantly changing and so is the way we furnish our outdoor rooms • by Mary Beth Schwartz

T

his is the year that you will finally get the outdoor living room that you always have dreamed of. Whether on a country landscape in Bucks County or off of the beach in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, these year-round living spaces can require just as much design as the indoors. You’ll be selecting patterns & colors, fabrics, furniture, cushions, lighting, umbrellas, even decorative rugs and pillows. Here are some top trends in outdoor furnishings to help you in your design journey. Topping the shopping list is comfortable seating. “Outdoor sectional and modular pieces are hugely popular these days. What better way to enjoy your outdoor space than to curl up in a big, deep-seated sectional. These pieces are customizable as well, and designed to fit in 52 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

a variety of spaces. The fabrics today are amazing. They are as soft to the touch as indoor fabrics, yet they resist mildew and fading. We’re even seeing faux leather for outdoors,” says Executive Director Jaclyn C. Hirschhaut, International Casual Furnishings Association. At Bucks Country Gardens Ltd., Lifestyle Manager Donna Dentner travels to furniture shows to hand select furniture. She searches for the best quality and value for her customers. Recently, her customers have been requesting pieces that are transitional in style. Instead of settling for what the big box stores offer, you can customize your furniture, whether it be frame colors or fabrics. “On the main bodies of the deep seating cushions people tend to choose neutrals, taupes, beiges, and grays. Bright pops of color and geometric patterns are picked up on accessories such as

throw pillows. For 2016, we are seeing more blues and grays in furniture,” Dentner says. Although cast aluminum furniture is in, Dentner says that next year there will be more blending of wood and wicker. Several manufacturers are available through Bucks Country Gardens Ltd. Some of the top brands include Alfresco Home, Castelle, Erwin & Sons, Gensun, Hanamint, Jensen Leisure, Meadowcraft, Peak Season, Ratana, Summer Classics, Telescope, and Woodard. Second on Hirschhaut’s popularity list is the fire feature. “Whether it’s a pit, a table, or a bar, customers want to add comfort, warmth, and ambiance with fire. Fire tables are perfect for extending the al fresco dining and entertaining season. There are so many options available—traditional natural gas, propane, and ethanol fuel. Table heights go from con-

versation height to dining to counter to bar. And sizes go from extra small for balconies to extra large for those who want to seat a crowd of 10 to 14 people,” she says. At Bucks Country Gardens Ltd., they carry a variety of dining sets integrating fire pits, Lazy Susans, even beverage coolers. Customers also are staying comfortable with cantilever umbrellas that combine heating and lighting, as well as patio heaters. A grouping of Adirondack chairs is perfect for a fire pit on its own. 56 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

Rounding out the top trends from the International Casual Furnishings Association are outdoor accessories. “The outdoors has become an extension of your home. Colors are flowing out of the kitchen, family room, and the living room. Rugs, plants, glazed pottery, a flat screen TV, accent tables, baker’s racks, tableware—you have so many options in the outdoor space,” Dentner says. Also included in accessories would be furniture covers, outdoor lighting, decorative pillows, cushions, and

umbrellas. According to Dentner, red is the number one color in umbrellas. Their sizes range from bistro to cantilever. You can even accessorize the umbrella base. “Our bases come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and finishes,” she notes. Bucks Country Gardens Ltd. also has the bar stools your need for the outdoor kitchen, porch rockers, park benches for wooded trails, and double chaise lounges for the pool area. “With today’s outdoor room, you don’t need to pack up your outdoor furnishings and head inside. There’s no question that the importance of the outdoor room keeps growing. Manufacturers are increasingly addressing the consumer’s desire to use their outdoor spaces throughout the year regardless of the temperature. Consumers want products that will make these spaces comfortable, cozy, and functional for both entertaining and relaxing,” Hirschhaut says. 58 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

When the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) asked their members what residential clients were looking for in outdoor design, the top contenders were fire features, lighting, outdoor furniture, seating & dining areas, and garden accessories. Making the bottom of the list were hammocks and outdoor sleeping spaces. (I predict that the outdoor bedroom will someday become as popular as the outdoor kitchen.) Bucks Country Gardens Ltd. can design and build your outdoor room, complete with all of the custom furnishings. They are located at 1057 North Easton Road, Doylestown, PA 18902. Historic Bucks County

Barns By Randl Bye

BB

arns in Bucks County are more than just buildings to store hay and house animals. They are artifacts of a culture that has all but vanished. They are beautifully built historic documents that point us to a time when small farms were the mainstay of the economy and life was simpler. Now, though some are still used for the fledgling farms that are left, barns stand as monuments paying tribute to yesteryear.

Building Stone Bucks County’s Delaware Quarries, Inc. has been supplying building stone to the area since 1946 • by Mary Beth Schwartz

S

tone is synonymous with Bucks County. We have fieldstone farmhouses and bank barns. It is part of our signature covered bridges. You’ll even find it in our walkways, water features, outdoor rooms, driveways, and retaining walls. When Bucks County’s masons, builders, landscape architects, and DIY homeowners need stone for their projects, they call upon Delaware Quarries, Inc. Delaware Quarries, Inc. was founded in 1946. Its main quarry, located along the Delaware River, has been operating since the year 1758. Princeton University was one of their first clients. Today, 76 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

Delaware Quarries, Inc. has over eight facilities, including its corporate headquarters in New Hope and retail locations in Lumberville and Langhorne. The Building Stone Institute (BSI) has recognized them as America’s largest stone supplier. You’ll find a large selection of products available through Delaware Quarries, Inc. One category is building stone. There is stone with full veneer or thin veneer with a range of styles and colors. A second category is landscape stone. Here you’ll discover landscape boulders for waterfalls, benches, and accents. How about flagstone for steps, hearths, walkways, and patios? Perhaps you need decorative gravel for a garden or driveway. Add cobblestones and steppers, mulch and topsoil, and Cambridge Pavingstones with ArmorTec to the list. Or maybe you are in search of natural wallstone for a waterfall,

retaining wall, or garden wall. Last but not least, Delaware Quarries, Inc. carries a plethora of accessories, including sealers, cleaners, masonry tools, weed fabric, and landscape edging. According to HGTV, natural stone is one of the most versatile elements available for a landscape makeover. Their experts offer some creative tips on using natural stone in your landscape. 1. Select stones that will fit the tone of your space. For instance, river rocks can be used to add warmth, while white marble bits can add some brightness to a shady spot. 2. Consider using stones for groundcover. They will last longer than mulch, which needs to be replenished at the start of each season. 3. Plant a rock garden. You can pick a spot that gets a lot of sun and put in a few Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016 77

small boulders. The boulders can be surrounded with decorative low-lying flowers. The spaces can be filled with smaller stones to complement the boulders. 4. Create a focal point in your space with one large interestingly shaped boulder. 5. Use large stones to create a decorative border. This is perfect for hiding the black liner of your backyard Koi pond. 6. Design a pretty stepping stone path in a shady area near the home. According to HGTV, it’s a practical way to keep shoes clean when walking up to a side or back door. To create a tidy look, they suggest surrounding large stepping stones with small pebbles in a contrasting color. Whether for your outdoor hardscape or the face of your new great room fireplace, Delaware Quarries, Inc. has a full selection of building stone products to

Tom Furey Tom Furey is a realist painter whose work conveys what the artist experiences • by Bob Waite

T

om Furey describes himself as a realist who is painterly. Meeting him at the Centre for the Arts in Bristol is reminiscent of the first time I met Tom there, while I was killing some time before Bristol’s annual doo-wop concert. Tom was at the Centre attending to visitors. Just popping in, I was pleasantly surprised to meet the painter and see several of his paintings hanging on the wall. They were strong. It is hard to define his palette, since it is broad and not confined to any particular colors in the way that his paintings were not limited to any particular subjects. His

work caught my eye. Tom says, “I like to paint what I experience.” This in itself broadens the range of material. Tom has worked for US Steel in the mill and as a training coordinator for over 10,000 employees. On a resume he lists skills like courseware and training development, technical writing, technical Illustration, document conversion, mediabased presentation development, WebPages design and a long list of other skills. Tom is well-travelled and a more than competent jeweler, who worked at that craft for years, while also working as a trainer, consultant and so on. Yet his lifelong aspiration has always been painting. “I started painting at five years old,” Tom says. Tom’s father served in both WWII and the Korean War. At the time Tom was five, his father was in a Veterans

hospital and for therapy they gave him paint by numbers kits. He would send the kits home for Tom, who would paint them. “It sparked my interest in art.” As Tom got older he helped his grandmother knitting, crocheting and doing other crafts. He also began to draw comic book cartoons, at first by copying them, and then from memory. Tom says, “I always got a pat on the back. Getting recognition plays an important part in the life of young people.” Tom was recognized for his abilities by his teachers, who would often have Tom draw illustrations on the board for their lessons. Tom attended Bucks County Community College as an art student and then finished his art education at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore. At the Institute he was a painting major and also learned how to be a jeweler.

After college, Tom shared a studio on Mill Street with two other artists. He stayed there from 1975 to 1999. His art was what interested him most, but raising a family meant allowing his wife to stay home with the children for their early years, so he also worked in the Steel Mill and as a jeweler. “I began as an abstract painter, but a 82 Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2016

friend who was an artist told me I would sell more art in Bucks County painting realistically. He said that I would still be using shapes and forms, which in essence are abstract.” Tom painted a small realistic painting and entered it in a juried show hosted by the Bucks County Arts Alliance. The painting won Best in Show. “It’s all a

learning process,” he says. As a representational painter Tom Furey has painted landscapes here and in a small English fishing village. He paints houses, stairways, still lifes and a large variety of other subjects. His paintings range from stark contrasts to shadowy and almost blurred. His palette ranges from dull to bright, all depending on his subject matter and the challenge to present his experience as an image. Oil is Tom’s favorite medium. His finishes are smooth. “I paint in layers.” Tom says, “There are a million things I want to paint.” (Tom paints full time now.) He starts each day by doing a complete painting. “I get up every morning at 5 or 6 and paint a painting for the day. I have to paint alla prima (wet on wet) and this means

I have to nail it right in the beginning.” Tom is a prolific painter, and in addition to his painting a day, he is usually working on about ten paintings at a time. He says, “It’s an addiction and there is no 12-step program for it.” Tom Furey has been in more than 20 juried shows in 2015. Some of his paintings are hanging in the Centre for the Arts in Bristol at 308 Mill St., Bristol, PA 19007 267-251-2538.
