Five Great Wedding Venues Making the choice of where to celebrate those important vows can be difficult, so we have narrowed the field by finding five great wedding venues / by Mary Beth Schwartz
here you want to celebrate the most important event in your life can be a difficult choice? Next to actually saying, “I do,” it is the most important decision you make about this most important and sacred event. The choices are dizzying. Should I have an outside wedding with a tent? How about a ceremony in the same building where I have the reception. Do I want to look out of the dining room and see water or wooded hills? Are my guests going to stay over before the wedding? How many rooms will I need? What are they going to do before the wedding? There are so many questions. And there are so many possible answers to all those questions. So we are going to try to make it a little easier by listing five great wedding venues: Holly Hedge Estate Bed & Breakfast, The Pen Ryn Estate, Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn, Peddler’s Village, and Lumberville 1740 House Country Inn.

HOLLYHEDGE ESTATE BED & BREAKFAST BUILT IN THE LATE 1700S AND PART OF the original William Penn land grant, HollyHedge Estate is situated on 21 bucolic acres. Located near the Delaware River in New Hope, the estate has its own rustic charm and has become a premier destination for Bucks County weddings. “My family has been committed to preserving the elegance and natural beauty of our 18th-century farm and estate since taking over in 1994. We are stewards of our estate’s history and the pristine land on which we are located. My family has refurbished many of the historic buildings, restored the estate’s architectural features, and rejuvenated its land. We have a number of acres of land that was put under cultivation to grow various items that we can use in the preparation of food for weddings and our inn guests. We are taking farm-to-table and sustainability to a new level. The food we can’t grow, we try to obtain from local sources,” says General Manager Tim Luccaro. According to Luccaro, the estate has several areas of interest for brides and grooms to utilize during their weddings. “There is a classic field stone bank barn, which is popular for wedding ceremonies and cocktail hours. “The Old Barn” has all exposed fieldstones and wood beams throughout the barn. Adjacent to it is a classic English garden. On the property there also is two small ornamental ponds, which are popular for pictures. We also have a newer pole barn that was constructed for receptions. This space has all of the modern amenities. At the estate’s original manor house, we have 15 guest rooms. Inn guests can enjoy a full-service breakfast on weekends,” Luccaro says. HollyHedge Estate has garnered numerous awards from Wedding Wire, as well as The Knot. “We can host up to 200 guests for a wedding. Couples have access to our two full-time onsite wedding planners. We are currently booking weddings for 2016 and 2017. There are limited dates available for 2015. Couples can take a tour of the estate by appointment. All of our catering is done in-house. Executive Chef Jose Calderon offers Nouveau American cuisine with French and Spanish influ-
ences. Pastry Chef Janine Harrison does all of baking. We offer several wedding packages, which can include stationary and passed hors d’ oeuvres, and a sit-down dinner with a champagne toast, salad course, and main course selections. For dessert, there is the custom wedding cake, pastries, and coffee and tea service,” Luccaro says. Contact the wedding consultants at HollyHedge Estate today to reserve your wedding date. The historic venue is located at 6987 Upper York Road in New Hope. Their phone number is 215-862-3136. For more information, see Facebook or visit www.hollyhedge.com. v

THE PEN RYN ESTATE “THE PEN RYN ESTATE WAS BUILT IN THE late 17th century as a home for the Bickley family, who grew their wealth as shipping merchants. The original name of the estate was Belle Voir, meaning beautiful view in French. However, the Bickleys changed the name to Pen Ryn due to their family’s original descent in Penryn, England. As time progressed, the Wharton and Drexel families occupied the estate for private residency, inviting notable American celebrities like Benjamin Franklin. With each ownership, the families added personal touches like the gallery and library. In the late 1980s, a developer had purchased the estate from the Pen Ryn School, yet soon declared bankruptcy. The property was abandoned for many years afterwards. In 1993, the estate was privately pur-
chased and meticulously restored to its original grandeur. Due to its historic nature and architectural significance, the Pen Ryn Estate is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the estate is available for the wedding of your dreams,” say Catering Sales Managers Elizabeth Lotz and Megan Smith. According to Elizabeth Lotz, the riverfront setting of Pen Ryn Mansion and Belle Voir Manor is simply stunning. “As you pass through our large columned entrance, you continue down the 2,000-foot tree-lined drive that opens to the Pen Ryn Estate. The drive splits into private pathways to both the Pen Ryn Mansion and the Belle Voir Manor, which was formerly the carriage house of the estate. Both facilities have been fully restored to their original grandeur, and are surrounded by landscaped lawns and gardens overlooking the Delaware River. Outdoor brick patios and walkways, courtyards, fountains, pergolas, and gardens provide the ultimate in photographic backdrops. Each facility is fully air conditioned and Pen Ryn Mansion has four working fireplaces, which are particularly beautiful for fall and winter weddings,” Lotz says. Winners of awards from The Knot as well as Wedding Wire, the Pen Ryn Estate hosts over 200 weddings a year. Some brides book within four months, while others go out as far as three years. Up to 400-seated guests can be accommodated in their ballrooms. For overnight stays, there are many hotels in the area. Pen Ryn Mansion and Belle Voir Manor can host one event at a time. There also are two outdoor ceremony areas with river views. Indoor ceremonies also can be arranged. All of the catering is done in house, along with the wedding cake. Pen Ryn’s kitchens are state of the art, and are managed by an award-winning culinary team. Brides have full access to the event planning management team. “We guide the brides from start to finish of planning their wedding, from linens and timelines to floor plans and vendor recommendations,” Lotz says. According to Elizabeth Lotz and Megan Smith, the Premier Wedding Package at the Pen Ryn includes exclusive use of the facility, gardens, and grounds overlooking the Delaware River for five

LAMBERTVILLE STATION RESTAURANT & INN
SITUATED ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER IN New Jersey, you will discover the Hunterdon County landmark of the Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn. For over 30 years, happy couples have been choosing the romantic venue for destination weddings. “We are a one-stop facility. You can have a rehearsal dinner at the restaurant. There is a chapel for ceremonies by our newly designed inn ballroom. From the ceremony venue, you walk about 20 steps into the Riversedge Lounge for the cocktail hour. It has open arches, and is on the ground level next to the river and Swan Creek. Then you can take the elevator or climb the glass enclosed spiral staircase to the Riverside Ballroom. It opened in the spring of 2014, and can accommodate up to 200 guests. Our new banquet facility has three walls of glass, eight feet in height, with spectacular views of the river. After the reception, the bride and groom can go to the Riverview Suite. The bridal suite is on the top floor, and overlooks the Delaware. It features a luxurious bath with rain shower and soaking tub, a living room with a double-sided fireplace, and a bedroom. Guests can stay overnight at the inn, which has 45 rooms. The next day we can host a honeymoon farewell brunch,” says Owner Dan Whitaker. Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn has garnered top
awards from Wedding Wire for its weddings. Couples can use their event manager in preparing for the big day. A bridal attendant is available to assist with the events of the wedding day. The site offers its own catering, and Banquet Chef Sabino Cruz is in charge of the cuisine. Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn holds one wedding at a time, and is booking into 2017. There is a selection of packages to fit the couple’s tastes and budget. “For second and third marriages, it is popular to have the ceremony down in the restaurant’s wine cellar by the fireplace. We can do cocktails and hors d’oeuvres there for 40 people,” Whitaker says. A wedding in the Riverside Ballroom can include five hours of deluxe open bar, champagne or wine toast, entree selections, choice of salad and appetizer, a custom wedding cake, table votives, and linens. There is an extensive list of wedding enhancements—a candy bar, Cold Stone Creamery ice cream station, chocolate fountain, wine service, children’s menu, spa robes for the room, even a custom ice sculpture. For more information on having your wedding at Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn, call 609-397-8300. The address is 11 Bridge Street in Lambertville, NJ. PEDDLER’S VILLAGE
NESTLED ALONG THE COUNTRY ROADS OF Lahaska you will find the charming Peddler’s Village. With its Colonial buildings, gardens, shops, and restaurants, this village has been attracting visitors for over 50 years. During that time, brides and grooms have chosen Peddler’s Village to host their wedding experiences. When couples first become engaged, Peddler’s Village offers its bridal showcases. “We have a showcase in February, as well in September. At the event, we highlight the Cock ’n Bull Restaurant, our main wedding venue. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are served. We also invite some of our preferred vendors. There is live music, a DJ, bridal fashions, and bakeries serve cake samples. We also hand out a bridal gift bag. It is nice opportunity for couples to see what we can offer. All of the vendors have a door prize. One of our shops within the village does a grand prize at the end of the showcase,” says Ann Lipcsey, Catering Sales Manager. “Peddler’s Village has everything all in one place. We have overnight accommodations at our 70-room hotel, the Golden Plough Inn. We have a spa for the ladies to spend an afternoon or prep for the wedding. There are 70 retail stores for shopping during wedding downtime. We have restaurants and bars. And at the Cock ’n Bull Restaurant, we can host the rehearsal dinner, reception for up to 200, and farewell brunch. For the couple and their guests, it is a weekend destination,” Lipcsey says. At Peddler’s Village, they host one wedding at a time, but 138

two in a day. Weather pending, the ceremony can be held at the Gazebo. There are photo ops everywhere at the village, including by the gardens, the Koi pond, waterwheel, and the Grand Carousel at Giggleberry Fair. Ann Lipcsey is on hand to make sure the planning and direction of your ceremony and reception are worry free. Banquet Chef Mike Ryan will handle the cuisine for your special day. Lochel’s Bakery of Hatboro handles the custom wedding cakes. According to Lipcsey, Peddler’s Village has done weddings on the fly, while others are planned two years out. “We are ready for anything. Here at Peddler’s Village we can customize the perfect package for you. We are unique in that we offer the bride and groom an overnight stay for their wedding night. We also give them a gift certificate to return and celebrate their first anniversary with us.” A wedding package at Peddler’s Village can include a fivehour reception, four-hour open bar, champagne toast, and butlered hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres. LUMBERVILLE 1740 HOUSE COUNTRY INN ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER IN THE QUAINT village of Lumberville you will find the historic Lumberville 1740 House Country Inn. Originally a working farm in the 1700s, it was later purchased by Harry Nessler in 1968 and turned into a motor lodge, with rooms having views of the river and the Lumberville-Raven Rock Pedestrian Bridge. In 2010, new owners purchased the 1740 House, including Joe Luccaro, owner of HollyHedge Estate Bed & Breakfast. The partners restored and preserved the lengthy two-story inn. “The 1740 House is a sister property of HollyHedge Estate. The wedding coordinators at HollyHedge work with the 1740 House to plan weddings and rehearsal dinners. The 1740 House has its own catering staff, and the executive chef at HollyHedge oversees the food quality and production. Both properties offer wedding packages that include the cake, ceremony, reception, flowers, linens, and such,” says General Manager Tim Luccaro. According to Luccaro, the 1740 House is ideal for small intimate weddings. “The 1740 has a smaller capacity. In the winter, the maximum party size outdoors is 40 people. When
we can make use of the patio and outside area, it goes up to 65 maximum. We can set up a package where we have the rehearsal dinner at 1740 House outside and along the river. The next day, the wedding ceremony takes place at HollyHedge. You also can have the ceremony outside of the 1740 House along the waterfront, and the reception takes place in The 1740 Club. This members-only club features a bar, and a dining room with an old stone fireplace,” Luccaro says. Small intimate weddings at 1740 House currently are booking three months to a year out, according to Luccaro. Brides and grooms can get a tour of the historic country inn by appointment only. The 1740 House also offers 24 guest rooms with full-service breakfast for its guests. Lumberville 1740 House Country Inn is located at 3690 River Road in Lumberville. Their phone number is 215-297-5661. For more information, you can like them on Facebook or visit www.1740house.com. v Mary Beth Schwartz is a freelance writer from Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Life’s Milestones ess Graves is a lifestyle photographer. “I am not a traditional photographer,” Jess says. “I want to show genuine interaction. My shots are scripted but not canned. They tell a story.” Photography for important milestones, such as engagements, weddings, pregnancy, newborns, a family growing, graduation and anniversaries, must tell a story and be part of a bigger story. “I need to know the people whose moments I am capturing. I need to know what is special about an event to those who participate in it.” Jess Graves believes that these occasions are sacred and need to be treated as such. “These photos are based on the most important decisions that people can make. I want to help people celebrate their milestones by capturing these precious moments for them with my camera.” To learn more about Jess Graves Photography, call 215-359-7701 or visit www.JessGravesPhotography.com.

Wedding Cake Your Way It is easy to get the cake the way you want it when you order it at McCaffrey’s. According to Lori Amenhauser, the cake decorator at the Newtown store, all you have to do is come in and begin a discussion about what you want. If you have a photo, then bring it in and she can make it happen. Trends are away from the traditional buttercream cakes and toward cakes with fondant molds and inedible decorations like rhinestones and jewels. Replacing the bride and groom on the top is often a heart or something else, although some do like the traditional decorations. Groom cakes, however, are simpler and tend to have masculine themes like fishing or sports. A dedicated staff of bakers and decorators in the McCaffrey’s stores produce high-quality custom baked goods for all occasions. McCaffrey’s supermarkets are located in Yardley, PA; 215-493-9619; Newtown, PA; 215-579-1310; Princeton, NJ; 609-683-1600; and West Windsor, NJ; 609-7993555 or visit www.mccaffreys.com.
