Shirley Mersky Bucks County artist Shirley Mersky enjoys capturing the way light lays across a landscape or still life

hirley Mersky begins all her landscapes outside. She doesn’t consider herself a pure plein air painter because she often brings her work back to the studio to refine it. Her interest is light. “Light is what really intrigues me,” she says. “I like the way light lays across landscape and still lifes and I so enjoy trying to capture that.” It’s the light that draws Shirley outside. She likes to paint different kinds of light, like afternoon light or morning light. “That’s why,” she explains, “it is very important for me to work outside. I know

a lot of artists like to work from photographs but to me, I can’t get that feeling of light unless I am there.” Shirley loved art as long as she can remember. She recognized that she had a talent for artistic endeavors at an early age and her teachers saw this too. “In elementary school, my teachers always recruited me to do the bulletin board. In high school

I majored in art. They actually had an art major. My teachers encouraged me.” Shirley would have liked to have been an art major in college. “Economically it didn’t seem like a good idea to my parents, so I went to liberal arts college where I majored in art history and English and later got certified in special ed.” In 1982 Shirley graduated from the

Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and began to paint. “After graduation I painted for a few years, and then started a family. I had two sons. So that took some time, I kind of got away from it, but never stopped painting completely. I painted on weekends. I taught special ed. My last job was at Rider University where I was their assistant director of disability services.” In 1996, Shirley seriously got back into painting. “I joined a few of the local art groups and got involved in the local scene.” She also decided to go back to school. “I reconnected to the Academy and started taking a few courses to refresh

myself—to get stimulated by new ideas. And I was fortunate enough to work with Peter Van Dyke, who I think is a really fantastic contemporary artist. I recently went out to the Wayne Art Center to work with Jon Redmond.” About ten years ago, Shirley began to sell her work at the Canal Frame Crafts Gallery in Washington Crossing. She found the owner, Debbie Crow, to be very encouraging. Shirley had made a decision to concentrate on painting landscapes and still lifes. For a while she was only painting landscapes, but when she took classes with Jon

Redmond, she began to paint more still lifes. “When you are outside it is there for you, but for a still life, you have to put it together yourself.” Still lifes, Shirley admits, were difficult at first. “When I took that course with Jon Redmond for two years (four semesters) he had us paint still lifes.” Light and composition are what make a still life, and that is what interests Shirley. Landscapes have to be painted quickly because every day the light is a little different. Most of Shirley’s landscapes are painted in one day. Sometimes with a large painting she is out two or three times but as a rule she tries to capture that day’s light. Painting outside is the first response, and when that is done, she takes the painting into her studio and refines it, or as she

says in her Artist Statement, “...the studio is the place to extend that first expression and make it something new and even more interesting.” hirley’s palette consists of eight colors. Her medium has always been oil and she uses both opaque and transparent colors to create the effects that are prominent in her art. By mixing these colors, she is able to cover the whole range of what she sees and sticks to neither warm nor cool colors but uses what is needed for the scene or still life she is painting. Shirley is hesitant to classify her work as realistic or impressionistic because she uses elements of both styles in her paintings. Her work is not abstract but she has the same love of shapes as an abstract

painter. In spite of this love for shape, light is always the governing theme in her work. In love with the rural countryside and farms found in Bucks County, Shirley often simply rides around looking for scenes to paint. She joined the Peace Valley Painters, an Upper Bucks art group and has been given access to some farms by her associations. Another thing that Shirley loves to paint is the Delaware River, and loves the challenge of painting the light dancing on the water and the reflections of land and sky. Historical figures who have influenced her work are the Dutch painters, like Vermeer and Rembrandt. She also is influenced by Fairfield Porter, Garcia Lopez, and of course, the Pennsylvania Impressionists. Shirleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal for her paint-

ings is simply to improve her paintings through vision and technique. By presenting seven projects by area design build firms, landscape designers and building contractors, we are able to show you a variety of projects done by top area professionals. Most projects that homeowners do fulfill two needs. They

omeowners had approached the Landscape Design Group (LDG) for a swimming pool design to turn their backyard into a summertime retreat. This residence was situated in a housing development just south of Lahaska. The house was located on a sloped, semi-wooded lot. Along with the pool, the ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; program included a spa, waterslide, places for sun and shade, and an outdoor structure to provide storage and a simple outdoor bar/kitchen. They

also wanted privacy, along with an informal, relaxed style to support the concept of a backyard getaway. According to the family, Landscape Design Group has transformed their lives by creating a delightful getaway just steps from their back door. The project surpassed their expectations. This getaway included several noteworthy design features. There are lush plantings in bold groupings to provide color and texture during the swimming season. The area

hugs a slope with two levelsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;one for the pool and the cabana, and the other for the spa and waterslide. Bold curves contrast with the natural surroundings. Natural materials were favored, but where necessary, cost-effective substitutes with a natural looking finish were used, such as the stamped concrete pool deck. The custombuilt structure has storage in the rear, with a simple outdoor kitchen/bar in the front. While sunning areas occur on both spa and pool levels, a playfully angled

orking in a 100-year-old home with original stone walls and slate roof where building an addition was not an option, instead Gemmi created from within. Creating a huge transformation while staying in the original footprint of the home, they needed to reorient the space from the 1920s kitchen layout. The original wall facing the backyard consisted of two small isolated windows, separated by

wall cabinets. When they saw how the light was coming in, they knew where to begin. Opening up one entire side to create a wall of windows brought a panoramic view, great countertop and windowsill space creating greenhouse style area for plants, a deep bathtub style sink, and most of all, allowing more natural light to stream into the kitchen. The overall visual presentation is a beautiful long and linear counter, with an equally long and linear win-

dow, looking out to the backyard with a view of the kids and dog at play. The client wanted the kitchen to be current while still being true to the architectural era of the home. Gemmi obliged by replicating the kitchen archway to the rest of the house and designing custom cabinetry reminiscent of the style of the 1920s. There is a mixture of finishes throughout, with a chrome faucet and chrome cabinetry knobs, antique brass lights and stainless steel appliances.

Modern amenities add a mixture of technology, including a computer tablet and a specially designated area for the espresso machine and the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of all things coffee. The finished product encompasses the best of both worlds, culminating in an inviting and open space, ready for cooking and entertaining. ndrea Steinberg, co-owner with her husband Gary of GL Designs, looked at the existing deck on this Montgomery County home and determined that it was simply a glorified landing. The existing deck broke up the space in a way which left a huge amount of unusable space. The doors had no connection to each other, and each door became its own little exit to the deck. It also divided the ground around it in a way that made the area look like pieces not melded together. So the existing

deck didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t relate architecturally to the house nor did it relate aesthetically and practically to the grounds. Andrea saw the need for integrating the new structure to the house and grounds as one organic whole. This means a design that integrates all the entrances to the house, provides a good view of the pool and grounds, does not split up the ground in disparate parcels, and directs traffic in a logical and aesthetic way. The end result is gorgeous, yet looks very simple. Yet design that

is simple and works is not easy to do, even though it appears so. Andrea says, “When you do good design, it should look easy—it shouldn’t look like you thought about it at all; it just works.” The finished deck is a masterpiece of design. Surrounded by beautiful rain gardens to keep water from running off by retaining it and slowly releasing it into the ground, it is integrated into the land and has railings, benches, a gangplank and walkway, which allows easy access to doors and house. The most incredible thing is that space is utilized and not wasted, nor stranded. The gang

plank, as Andrea calls it, connects the doors to each other and is one step down to the main deck which is, depending on the grade, one or two steps from the ground. And a view of the pool from the kitchen allows for child safety considerations. Andrea likes the organic connection when the deck sits close to the land. However, the house had been “budget” remodeled many times by the previous owners, and it lacked the quality and charm they desired. With over 5,000 sq. feet of house to remodel, they were expecting this to be a daunting task. ample workspace and storage. The hardwood floors create a warm feel that is blends with blue and white cabinetry and stainless steel appliances to create an upto-date design that is family friendly. REPAIR AND RESTORATION

hen a husband and wife wanted to convert a Newtown residential property into two commercial sites, they called upon Michael J. Hutchinson Building and Design to get the job done. On the back of the property, Hutchinson converted a barn into a sensory gym for children with autism. This business, now Sensory Zone of Newtown, is owned by the wife. For this project, the entire first floor of the barn was redone. Climbing

walls, areas for swinging, cushioned gym mat flooring, ceiling hooks, a platform treehouse, and a zip line were installed. Other installations included windows, entry doors, and a parking lot. At the front of the property is the husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law firm. It is headquartered in the turn-of-the-century residence. According to Hutchinson, this home project involved both repair and restoration. Changes on the exterior of the home included the addition of unique colors, use of stone and stucco,

wood siding, a new roof, and the repointing of stone piers. There was lots of work to do on the inside as well. The front porch, now the reception area, was restored with the addition of heat, air conditioning, and new windows. The living room area became the conference room. The existing kitchen was removed and a kitchenette was put in its place. In the same area, accessible restrooms were installed. The dining room in the back of the house became the lawyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office space. Upstairs a full bath was installed. All of the second-floor bedrooms

were converted into office space. Throughout the home, Hutchinson repaired and restored plasterwork, trim, and missing floorboards. He repurposed as much material as possible. Designer Deborah Leamann used her skills to give the interiors in this reproduction Colonial Williamsburg Newtown home a little more edge, while still maintaining its period look.

uilt in 1980, this reproduction 18th century Colonial Williamsburg home in Newtown has an air of stately sophistication. Designed with the stature and architectural finery befitting a residence of the period, the home has a classic, traditional appeal. The interior elements were set to the taste and lifestyle of the original owners. In 2011 the house was sold and the new owners appreciated the house's authentic replication of a Colonial Williamsburg style home

but wanted to change and update elements of the interior living space. The owners commissioned Deborah Leamann, of Deborah Leamann Interior, to transform the interior of their home. Designed to meet the likes and preferences of the prior owners, the new owners felt the interior was outdated, according to Deborah Leamann. “It was the homeowners' wish to bring the home into the 21st century,” she explains. “They wanted to blowout the cobwebs and bring it back to life.” The interior was dated; it was stuck in

the 1980s, according to Deborah. “There were a lot of bright colored walls and wall coverings,” she describes, “and the rooms were looking very worn.” While maintaining the authentically replicated architectural elements, it was Deborah's task to give the interior a facelift, from floor to ceiling. With attention to detail and balance, the living space was refreshed and reappointed reflecting the tastes and lifestyle of the new owners. According to Deborah, there was very little reconstructing, but there were a few rooms that were transformed with architectural modifications “We didn't gut anything,”

Moving away from informal and cozy to the more formal dining room, in this room Deborah wanted to maintain a more traditional look.

Deborah adds. “My intent was to create a fresh feel,” Deborah explains, “I wanted to streamline the space, dialing down the 1980s decor.” Room by room, Deborah restyled and reappointed the space beginning with new

coats of paint. “I freshened it up with lighter wall colors and window treatments,” she adds. She covered the bright colors with a more neutral, warm palette. Beginning with the entry, Deborah infused the space with a new sense of airiness and

made it more welcoming. Deborah’s appointments were more non-traditional. “Breaking away from the classic table with mirror above, in this entrance I placed a biblioteque ( bookcase) to showcase the homeowner’s books and sentimental art objects,” Deborah describes. “Two Queen Anne Chinoisserie side chairs, with stenciled leather seats, elevate this vignette,” she continues. Tucked under the stairs is an antique settee with vintage pillows from the studio of Mary Jane McCarty. This entry is a front-to-back design, with French doors at the rear of the entrance hall that lead out to the patio and beyond. Taking advantage of all the light in this space, Deborah added a mini greenhouse overflowing with greenery. From the entry we move into the rest

of the living space. To execute some minor architectural modifications, Deborah enlisted the expertise of local builders, Worthington and Shagen, to create a few custom pieces. For instance, in the living room, Deborah had them remove the builder's grade white wood mantel and widen the wall. The craftsmen from Worthington and Shagen replicated a mantel from an original drawing of an 18thcentury mantle and refinished it to look aged, like it had been there for 200 years. Custom bookcases were added on the opposite side of the room. To finish this room, Deborah created multiple seating groups and hung art pieces salon style over the sofa. “It's a nice juxtaposition to all of the straight lines in this space.”

In the master bedroom Deborah also used a soft, crisp palette. Floral window treatments in pastel shades dressed the windows and accent a cozy sitting area in one corner of the room.

he den, just off of the living room, offers a cozy, intimate feel. Embellished in neutral shades of cream and tan, this informal gathering space is furnished with a cream-colored leather sofa and chair pulled together with a neutral colored area rug. Deborah removed the glass doors from the bookcases and applied a brown grass cloth backdrop, opening up the space. A light, bright color scheme sets off the bookcases. In the study, directly off of the den, Deborah wanted the two rooms to have a flow and connection. Also done in tones of brown and cream, this room overflows with natural light streaming in from the bay win-

dows adorned with roman shades. Deborah worked with the same color palette she applied in the den, adding the same window treatments and matching fabric and rug. Two easy chairs sit, facing a French-style walnut desk, offering views of the outside through the wall of windows. Another more informal gathering area to be reappointed was the family room. Repainted in a shade of mustard to complement the original cherry floors and coffered ceiling, this room's facelift included a woodburning fireplace that Deborah designed for this space. “My purpose was to add personality and warmth to the room,” she explains “in a traditional motif with the raised panels, she designed the Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2018

arch of the mantel to create a curved line in a very linear space. A few other modifications involved lowering the wainscoting for better proportions and adding a custom wall cabinet finished in a warm dove white. Built by Worthington and Shagen, this cabinet houses the flat screen TV and other entertainment equipment. To complete this room Deborah added an antique drop front desk in one corner and a collection of unique accessories, including an antique weather vane mounted above a new custom bench. A departure from the other rooms, Deborah made few changes in the sunroom. One major renovation that had to be addressed was to put in a new floor, since the original floor had water damage. Very little was changed except to address the water damage. Other than that she just added new furnishings to give it a new look and ambiance. “This is a great space to entertain on a more casual level,” says Deborah. She created an inviting dining area with a settee and wicker chairs on one side, balanced by a comfortable lounge area on the other. chairs. “These are very masculine chairs so I added slip covers in a linen floral print by Lee Jofa to give them a feminine touch,” Deborah continues. The side chairs are new and covered in linen velvet also designed by Lee Jofa. Illuminating the space is an iron chandelier with crystal beading from Neirman Weeks. An antique mule chest was placed to function as a buffet and doors were added to a corner cabinet. Deborah used lamp lighting to add softness to the space. Finishing touches included a selection of art pieces and accessories including an antique case clock. All the first floor living space was transformed with Deborah's eye for comfortable and warm interiors. This theme was carried out with the two upstairs bedrooms as well. The daughter's bedroom was actually one of the first rooms Deborah redid. Deborah explains that the owners wanted their daughter to feel at home in the new house. “The daughter had some definite ideas of how she wanted her room to feel and look,” Deborah adds. Awash in soft and calming tones, this bedroom was accented with celadon and ivory French toile wallpaper and filled with off white furnishings and an antique chest. “I finished the room with plantation shutters and an over curtain to add softness,” Deborah adds. In the master bedroom Deborah also used a soft, crisp palette. Floral window treatments in pastel shades dressed the windows and accent a cozy sitting area in one corner of the room. The arrangement has two overstuffed chairs that are on casters so they can be turned easily to face the fireplace. Deborah explains that new furnishings were rearranged to fit the space. “Art and acces-

sories were placed to make it personal and inviting.” Inviting is the best way to describe the newly renovated lower level. What was once a giftwrapping room was transformed into a stunning wine cellar. Located off the house's side entrance at the bottom of the stairs, this space was completely overhauled from top to bottom. They tore out all the hunter green cabinets and reconstructed the walls, floors and ceiling. “We put our hearts and souls into this space,” Deborah reveals. First they exposed the staircase to open the space and add some interest. All the walls and the floor were done in brick which was balanced with the wood ceiling and the wine cabinets and shelves. In the center of the space sits a reproduction antique farm table constructed with a tongue and groove application. Recessed lighting sheds a soft glow and a pendant light hangs over the reproduction farm table adding a rustic feel. “Every element was taken into consideration during

the design process in this room,” Deborah adds, “from the stair treads to hinges and knobs, nothing was overlooked.” Nothing was overlooked throughout the entire interior transformation. Deborah's approach is to balance everything, with attention to interior elements and styling, to have the end result be fitting of the house's character and space. “This house was modeled after a Colonial Williamsburg home,” she explains, “and I worked with the footprint of the house.” Her intent was to maintain as much of the original architecture and flavor of the reproduction as possible. “I wanted to push the envelope a little.
