Chase and Solita Rosade of Rosade Studios in New Hope have played a major part in the international resurgence of this Japanese art form

n my way to meeting Chase Rosade I imagine someone who is mystical or who would ask strange questions like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is the sound of one hand clapping.â&#x20AC;? I drive up the long curly driveway that takes you from Ely Road to Rosade Bonsai Studio. It is narrow and wooded. The property is lovely. I come to his home and in a short distance from the home is the studio. Chase comes out to meet me and I am surprised and relieved that he was so normal, what I like to call a regular guy. The regular guy persona, however, can fool. He along with his lovely wife Solita are anything but Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2017

They are internationally known bonsai artists, whose expertise is sought by aspiring students who come from all over the world to see what they can learn from this creative couple. “Bonsai means planted in a container,” Chase says. This translation tells us lots about the art, yet it is much more. Chase, himself a graduate from Delaware Valley University in ornamental horticulture, did not know much about bonsai until he traveled around the world for two years during the ’60s. “I ended up in Nara, Japan and studied with a bonsai artist for a year.” The bonsai tree developer and grower’s name was Kyozo Yoshida. “When I got back,” Chase says, “I got a job in this area.” During this period he began to teach bonsai and give lectures part time, but he wanted to do full time. Bonsai is Chase’s life. In 1970 Chase he opened the Rosade Bonsai Studio in Bucks County,

Pennsylvania. His home and studio on Ely Road in New Hope is a perfect place for his art, and it serves as a perfect facility to give classes. Since then he has served as president and board member of several national and international bonsai organizations. Chase is a founding member of the National Bonsai Foundation, which houses the largest U.S. collection of bonsai in Washington, D.C. Chase has been fortunate to continue his travels, both domestic and international. He is frequently invited to various locales throughout the world to be a teacher, lecturer, and judge. One of his trips Chase met Solita at a conference in England. Solita, educated in the United States, Spain and Switzerland is originally from Colombia. Her first bonsai class was taken in Cali in 1984 but since has been fortunate to have studied with world known bonsai masters. While in Colombia, she not only maintained her personal collection, but cared for a number of extensive col-

lections, as well as teaching the art of bonsai to young and old. In 1990 she co-authored a bonsai manual in Spanish entitled The Essential in Bonsai. Solita has served in a number of bonsai positions, she is past President of the Association Vallecaucana de Bonsai, s Chairman Emeritus of the World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF), is a Past President of Bonsai Clubs International (BCI). She is founding Chairman of the Latin American Bonsai Federation

(FELAB) among other positions. Her credentials have taken her all around the world as a guest at International Bonsai Conventions and Events in Asia, Europe, India, South Africa, New Zealand, United States, Canada and several countries in Latin America. Bonsai trees can be very old, 50 even a hundred years old. Some of the trees I am looking at are at least 50 years old. The fact that they stay small and have aesthetically pleasing shapes is due to the skill of the bon-

sai artist. In the studio are many containers that can be used for the new or replanted bonsai tree. Chase says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the shallow container is kind of like a frame to a picture.â&#x20AC;? I can see that. The beautiful shapes are enhanced by the interesting containers that they are planted in. The shallow container also plays an important role in keeping the plant small. The other thing is pruning. The pruning of bonsai trees is something that goes on continuously to keep the shape that

the artist is trying to achieve and to keep it from getting too big. Chase showing me a flowering tree that is not in bloom says, “The leaves or needles on the bonsai tree are small but flowers and fruit are always the same size they would be on a large tree.” Repotting and changing soil needs to be done along with the regular regimen of pruning and trimming. “It is important to keep the tree healthy,” Chase says.

Teaching is important to both Chase and Solita. Students come at all levels. Some take classes and some actually stay as apprentice artists. The Rosades have had several foreign students live with them and they both love to see their students go on to being artists themselves and teaching others. The garden has bonsai on display in the spring, summer and fall, both for viewing and for sale. Visiting the Rosade Studio is by appointment only. The Rosade Studio is

This ensures a more creative and unique design which ultimately better reflects the clients’ interests and the way they live.” In 2015, Wolstenholme Associates, LLC received the Doylestown Borough Stewardship Award for their work on the Nathan James Plaza Building. Located at

108 North Main Street in Doylestown, this building was in disrepair for years. John Wolstenholme wanted to restore the building in tune with historic preservation in some areas while modernizing others. “We developed a plan to renovate the building relative to the extent of the needed repairs, which influenced a design model of historic preservation to transitional to modern.”

Three floors of the historic building were restored. On the first floor, layers of flooring were stripped to reveal hard maple floors. The wood wainscoting and wood paneled ceiling were restored by John’s sister Karen. The cracked plaster walls were replaced with modern mortar and given a fresh coat of paint. On the third floor, a modern design was implemented. “The apartment designed for my brother Jim featured an open loft with a bathroom sans doors, a large eight-foot diameter high efficiency fan to reduce cooling load, and complete spray foam insulation in all walls and ceiling. The turret now houses a wine attic with a repurposed “door to the past” to complement the modern kitchen.” According to Wolstenholme, the building now features such modern conveniences as zoned systems; new plumbing and wiring, including provisions for a full building back-up generator and Cat 6 wiring to

anticipate future smart building technologies; and building automation technology, which wirelessly controls lighting and window treatments. Over in the Jericho Mountain District, Wolstenholme Associates, LLC worked with Worthington & Shagen Custom builders to create Trunnel Hyll. This project fused history with technology. Situated on seven acres of scenic woodlands, this project included a main barn (1850s1860s) which was relocated from Berks County, and a 1820 log cabin relocated from Russell County, Virginia. The log cabin was first built by a preacher for use as Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2017

a wedding chapel. According to Wolstenholme, sustainability was important for this property. Resawn pine hardwood floors in the main living area were reclaimed from the trees removed during construction. Resawn ash was used for the master bedroom floors from trees removed during construction. The home’s location on the site was selected to reduce the overall number of trees to be removed for construction of the home. Elements of the barn, such as the roof and walls, were designed to stop thermal bridging. Reclaimed barn wood siding covers

the exterior walls. Cedar shakes were selected for the roof for their natural look, as well as longevity. A geothermal system was installed for heating and cooling. “The design engineer expects average heating, cooling, and electrical costs to be under $235 while occupied.” Another Bucks County project for Wolstenholme Associates, LLC was named Elysium. “This adaptive reuse project combined an existing concrete masonry garage and the relocation of a historic barn, circa 1885, which was relocated from the location of the new Our Lady of Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2017

The barn, which forms the framework for the main residence, was reconstructed using the original timber frame structure and now includes a residential elevator, a large living and dining area that opens to the underside of the new light monitor, NanaWall folding glass door systems, and a third floor media loft.” Wolstenholme adds that the existing garage was transformed into a gym and a three-car garage. “The garage’s second floor has become the master suite with separate access and a private Ipe wood deck

Modern basements now include wine cellars with cozy tasting spaces, game rooms, family rooms, man caves, custom home theaters, home offices, play rooms for the kiddies, home gyms, dry/wet bar areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, even closets. Rochelle, AIA, Architect offer helpful information to homeowners thinking about basement makeovers. According to Justin Simonet, there are two steps to consider in basement renovations. Step one is to determine if you have a water/moisture problem. A mild case of water intrusion will show on the walls. This is called efflorescence, which is the migration of a salt to the surface of a porous material, where it forms a coating. This can be treated inexpensively using a brush cleaning and a masonry paint like UGL Drylok. If your water problem is more prominent like standing water on the slab floor or pouring through the walls with a heavy rain storm, dramatic basement waterproofing is required. This can be achieved by a reputable basement waterproofing contractor installing a French drain piping system, dimple board, and sump pump. “After these steps are taken, I usually inform my clients to wait at least a year before finishing the space. This way you can be certain the waterproofing has worked and your new space will be dry and unharmed by moisture for years to come.” tep two to your basement remodel, Simonet says, is to find a reputable design/build contractor and/or architect. When it comes to planning basement makeovers, Susan M. Rochelle, AIA, Architect offers homeowners six important tips. One, if you can get the laundry room out of the basement, go for it. putting a bathroom in the basement, especially if the redesigned space will be used often. Three, have the ductwork rerouted to the perimeter of the room so that the central area of the basement is higher. Four, you will need a safe way of existing the basement in the event of an emergency. The new design should include such elements as French doors, sliding glass doors, a large window, or a large area well. Five, think of having your finished basement be open to grade. You can have sliding doors that walk right out to the backyard. This way, when you are in the basement, you do not feel as much that you are in the basement. If you home does not naturally have the grade, retaining walls can be installed on either side of the doors so that you can walk out and get to grade. Six, if you have the green to build a new home and want to have a family room in your basement, plan on a deeper basement than normal. The basement includes two changing rooms, a shower, and an exercise room with painted wood. Rochelle’s most memorable basement makeover was a truly livable space. The design list included bedrooms with fireplaces, a sitting

area, a bathroom, a sleeping room, a full bar, a movie theater, a gorgeous wine cellar, and a card room. There even was a large room with a fireplace where the homeowner often entertained. It had enough room to accommodate a guest band. When it comes to decor in your new basement space, Better Homes and Gardens offers some creative additions. Add some windows to your space. They will bring in natural light and add charm. Window treatments can be added to frame the windows. For your standard concrete walls, add some thought provoking art. To create functional spaces, you can add built-in dividers. Some ideas include bookshelves, unique shelving, storage cabinets, or a custom cabinet. Add some wainscoting to your basement. This could be a ledge for accent pieces or texture on walls. Last but not least, you can dress up the load bearing poles in the basement to match the style of your new room. From tiny paintings to small paintings to almost big paintings, Frances Powderly keeps trying different things • by Bob Waite

rances Powderly has not been painting that long. She says, “I’ve only been painting fourteen, fifteen years. And it’s all because of eBay.” This caught my attention. Of all things that would inspire a person to paint, eBay? Yes, she says, “I was on eBay looking for some miniature tea sets. I collect everything.” So she explains, “While I was browsing, I came across these little dollhouse size paintings that a wonderful artist put up on eBay. Frances shows me a miniature painting that she did.” The painting she shows me is about 2 ½ by 2 ½ inches. As if she is reading my mind, she says, “Smaller.” Hers were only about ½ by ½ of an

inch. There were landscapes and animals— they were all different in subject matter, so I looked and I looked and said, ‘I wonder if I can do this’ because I never painted anything so tiny.’” Miniature paintings became an artistic obsession for Frances, who hadn’t painted for a long time before she saw those paintings. “I have really no formal training in painting, even though I went to art school,” she tells me. She explains that she went to Moore College of Art in Philadelphia to study textile design. Growing up Frances had art lessons and classes in high school. “I liked art. I always drew.” The teachers noticed that Fran excelled in art. She also took lessons when she was in junior high. In college her art classes were mainly textile design, although she learned art history too. Family difficulties prevented her from doing textile design. One important artistic influence in her life was her Aunt Virginia who was an incredible painter and although she gave it up when she married, her home was full of her paintings and she gave Frances drawing lessons when she was a child. “We did a lot of things together like painting wall murals, making Christmas ornaments. We made candy Easter eggs one year.” When Frances saw these miniature paintings on eBay she wanted to try painting small. “As soon as I saw them I was questioning myself about whether I could do this or not. I found a nice photo in a magazine, potted plants. I copied it tiny and it was great.” She says. After her first painting Frances couldn’t stop. “I kept painting because I enjoyed it so

much.” She gave some to friends and then she took one to be framed at the Radcliffe Gallery in Lahaska. This was a framing shop and gallery that is no longer there, but it handled some very good painters at the time. “I took one in and asked to frame it and the owner had to figure a way to do it because she couldn’t cut a frame that small.” When Frances came back to pick up the framed painting, the owner asked if she had any more of the little miniatures. She said she was having a show. Frances recalls answering the owner, “Yeah, I have a whole bunch. I’ve got about sixty of them.” The owner said, “You can do a little section on the wall, and we’ll frame them and you can be the miniature painter.” Frances said, “Well ok.” Frances says, “They were selling. People were buying them. But then my husband started saying to me, ‘They’re not real paintings. You’ve got to paint bigger. These are fun and everything but to be a real painter, you have to paint something of some size.’ And I ignored him, kept doing what I was doing. And gradually I did get bigger and bigger and bigger until now. I think the largest one I’ve ever done has been an 18 by 20-inch painting.” Parenthetically she says, “But I still like to paint small.” As I look at some of her work at the Canal Frame Crafts Gallery in Washington Crossing, I notice a small six by six-inch painting. She says, ““To me that’s huge!” Painting small paintings has its difficulties, such as painting to scale, but there are advantages too. She says, “But also when you shrink it down like that you do away with a lot of the other details. You know, the larger you get the more detail you have to add.”

Talking about what it’s like to be raised in a family of builders, Frances explains that when she got married she and her husband bought a house in Gwynedd that they built an addition on it right away and in a year found an old house in New Hope to work on. Now she has another Bucks County home. And because of her love of building her paintings are most often landscapes that show a structure like a house, barn or outbuilding. She hopes to make a studio in her current home but now paints at the dining room table. Frances Powderly paints with acrylics. “I am going to try oils,” she says. “I do acrylic because that’s what I learned to use in college At that time, in the early ’70s, acrylics were new and all my teachers were just. ‘Oh, this is just something new and wonderful.’ And that’s what they kind of pushed us to paint with. In textile design you need paint that dries quickly.” There are advantages and disadvantages to using acrylics. One of the disadvantages is that they do dry very quickly. “You can’t get that real soft blending of colors like you can with oil. It’s more hard edges I would say. It’s very difficult to blend. You have to get a lot of paint on the canvas and work fast.” Oil, of course, also has its disadvantages. She says, “You see with acrylics if you make a mistake or there is something you want to change, you can do it immediately because the paint dries in a minute, so there’s no waiting. You just sit down and you go.” Although Frances has tried painting plein air, she finds it too distracting. “There’s too much going on outside. There birds flying, squirrels running. I can concentrate more

easily inside.” She takes lots of photos. “Every year I go on the garden tour. I go on the barn tour. I go to the designer house. I do enjoy the tours because I get to see properties that I wouldn’t normally get to see. I love houses. I love old building. I can actually get lost just looking at a stone wall.” Although painting small is fun and what got her into painting to begin with, Frances’ goals as a painter is to paint bigger and, of course, to keep trying different things, including the use of oils. Frances, who paints on Gesso board rather than canvas, doesn’t paint every day. But when she does paint, she says, “I put everything else on hold. I can go for several months before I get the bug, and then I’ll paint a lot. I paint in spurts. My time is completely dedicated to my painting.” During these periods she will produce numerous paintings. “It takes such intense concentration and focus that I don’t think about anything else and don’t worry about anything. I am totally in the moment. It’s very good for my brain when I paint.” Although Frances is fond of the New Hope School of Pennsylvania Impressionists, she paints in a realistic style. She likes being very tight and detailed, even though her miniature paintings are so small.
