Help for Hearing Loss

osing hearing is a slow process, so slow that you may not even notice. Dr. Lynda Colligon-Wayne of Cadence Hearing Services says, “Over a period of time a person may accommodate their slow gradual hearing loss by turning up the television and their phone volume.” In the meantime, you may have difficulty understanding what people are saying or you may answer people inappropriately, by answering another question than what you were actually asked. In a restaurant you may struggle to communicate because you cannot distinguish the person talking to you from background noise. “Often the person doesn’t know it is happening,” Dr.Wayne says. This is why it is always helpful for the audiologist to speak to a spouse or someone living with the person who is being evaluated. They can often see the extent of the problem more than the person who has it. The actual hearing test is done in a booth.“It’s not as small as a phone booth, and it has windows so you won’t get claustrophobic. It looks like a recording studio. And since it keeps out background noises, it provides an accurate assessment.” After the assessment is finished and the extent of the hearing loss is determined, Dr. Wayne looks for medical causes. “That’s one of the reasons it is better to go to an audiologist than to someone who isn’t a physician.” There are a variety of medical conditions that can affect hearing such as wax, infection or a perforated eardrum. Once medical causes are ruled out, then the patient can get a hearing Dr. Lynda Colligon-Wayne aid. There are many kinds, some very small, some that go into the ear, some behind. It is based mainly on the patient’s preference. Dr. Wayne is there to guide her patients through the whole process. Cadence Hearing Services, LLC has both a Newtown and Doylestown location. Elder Directed Care

lder directed care is a novel concept in care for the elderly in that the elders themselves or those closest to them make most of the decisions that affect their own care. A stated goal of Morris Hall Meadows is, “… for each Morris Hall Meadows elder to have a meaningful life with as much autonomy over his or her activities as they choose. Elders control their own daily routines and rhythms for waking, sleeping, meals, self-care and alone time. Each has direct involvement in his or her own care plan, and all elders enjoy formal and informal opportunities for engagement inside and outside of the home.” Following The GREEN HOUSE® model developed by Dr. Bill Thomas, Morris Hall emphasizes three core values: a meaningful life, empowered staff and a real home. The focus is on community, compassion and comfort for every individual, in an environment that provides outstanding physical and emotional support. The Morris Hall campus is the only GREEN HOUSE® in the Philadelphia area. In the GREEN HOUSE® model elders live in actual homes offering more privacy and comfort than traditional nursing home settings. Each of the thoughtfully designed single-level homes has ten private bed-and-

Total Hip Replacement

O

ver the years, orthopedic physicians, such as the team at Rothman Institute, have tweaked and perfected the art and science of hip replacement surgery. If you are preparing to undergo this procedure, you may interested in a specific, step-by-step breakdown of what the surgery includes:When you go in and are preparing for surgery on the day of your procedure, you may be given general anesthesia or, in some cases, regional anesthesia only. After the incision is made, the surgeon will remove the damaged cartilage from the hip socket and will also take out the upper part of the femur bone, which will have a damaged surface due to the bone-on-bone contact. Next, the surgical team will place the prosthetic component, which is made of metal or medical-grade plastic. This may be secured with or without the use of cement. Afterward, you may have pain from the procedure itself, most patients report having immediate relief of the intense arthritic pain they had been experiencing prior to the surgery. With some assistance, most people are able to get out of bed on the day of surgery! In Bucks County, the Rothman Institute has locations in Doylestown and Bensalem. For more information visit www.rothmaninstitute.com.

The Art And Science of Dentistry

he quality of our lives is often directly related to the condition of our teeth. Our teeth are not only the first stage in the breaking down of food to nourish the body, but they are a major element in our appearance. A healthy smile wins friends and builds confidence. Care of our teeth should be a major priority, and that’s why it is important to find a dentist who can take care of our preventative, restorative and cosmetic needs. Dr. Michael A. Mendlowski, who has been in active private practice for 36 years, is just such a dentist. He is a graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry. He earned Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2005, and in 2012, he was awarded his Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, an award that is held by less than two percent of practicing dentists in the country. Dr. Mendlowski performs a range of dental procedures that includes preventive care, restorative dentistry, fixed prosthodontics, implant restorations, porcelain veneers, and tooth whitening. Dr. Mendlowski utilizes both art and science to deliver quality dental care with state of the art technologies. He uses the latest digital technology available in todays 92

Avoiding Mosquito Bites

94

M

ost mosquito bites are relatively harmless. The itchy bumps often last for just a day or 2 after a mosquito has punctured your skin. But if the mosquito is carrying certain germs, like viruses or parasites, these pathogens might enter your blood during the bite and make you sick. Summer can be a bummer if outdoor fun is interrupted by the irritating buzz of mosquitoes.Their bites not only create itchy red bumps on your skin; they also carry the risk of disease. NIH-funded scientists are working to find better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. And we can all take simple steps to avoid getting bit by those bloodsucking insects. Use insect repellents. Products containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or IR3535 can be applied to skin. Follow label instructions. Cover up. When outside, wear long sleeves, pants, and socks. Mosquitoes may bite through thin fabric, so spray thin clothes with an EPA-registered repellent like permethrin. Don’t apply permethrin directly to skin. Mosquito-proof your home. Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep insects out. Use air conditioning if you have it. Get rid of mosquito breeding sites. Empty standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, and birdbaths on a regular basis. Cellphones And Brain Cancer

M

obile phones don't increase the risk of brain cancer, 30-year study concludes,” the Mail Online reports. The Australian study found the massive increase in mobile phone use over the past 30 years was not matched by a similar rise in brain cancer cases. The first official mobile phone call in Oz took place in 1987 by the then Minister of Communication, Michael Duffy. Now, mobile phone ownership rates are estimated to be around 94%. Despite the explosion in Australian mobile phone ownership, the researchers found no corresponding spike in brain cancer rates. They therefore concluded there was no evidence that mobile phones cause brain cancer. But the researchers only had the number of Australians with mobile phone contracts to play with – they didn't have any individual data, for example, with information about how often or for how long people had their phones to their heads or, increasingly in the smartphone era, held over their faces. The study tells us that at a population level, it's unlikely mobile phone ownership is responsible for any moderate or larger increase in brain cancer in Australia. But it doesn't tell us about individual risk patterns. Despite this uncertainty, when it comes to other risk factors for cancer, such as smoking, poor diet, drinking too much alcohol and lack of exercise, mobile phone ownership is probably not a significant risk to your health. THE MEDICINE

OF

AESTHETICS

Dr. Glenn DeBias, a pioneer in the effective use of CO2 Lasers in aesthetic medicine, sees his specialty as a more natural alternative to cosmetic surgery by Margo Aramian Ragan

D

r. Glenn DeBias, founder and medical director of The Institute for Laser and Aesthetic Medicine says, “Our society can be very judgmental. We praise a youthful look.” And no doubt about it, people with an aged appearance seem to be easier to overlook. A reversal of traditional values, the modern and post modern world values youth, and people whose faces are prematurely aged often are left behind in the scramble to get the job, the promotion and social respect that a youthful appearance commands. So why does our skin look older than we believe it should? Dr. DeBias credits what he calls accelerators for this unhappy

96

B U C K S C O U NTY M A G . C O M

phenomenon. Accelerators include genetics; people with fairer skin show the signs of aging faster. Diets that lack the proper nutrients, smoking and too much sun can also accelerate the appearance of age. The skin gets thinner, the pigmentation is irregular and with decreased elasticity, the skin loosens and wrinkles appear. At one time surgical procedures were

the only way to change this downward spiral. But there were drawbacks. The facelift was the recommended way to get a younger appearance. Dr. DeBias says, "Basically, the physician had to cut and pull the skin to tighten the face, but the reality was that the face changed while the body continued to age. Long term, there was a disconnect in the result.” The younger

appearance sought, often ended up looking unnatural, sometimes even strange. Once the skin was pulled and cut, it couldn’t be redone if too much skin was removed. Besides that there was always the possibility of infection and the healing process was painful and took a long time. People were looking for something better and less invasive than what plastic surgery offered. Hence, the development of aesthetic medicine. Aesthetic medicine is a broad term that encompasses all the strategies to help a patient develop their best natural look and maintain it,” Dr. DeBias says. And this the route he took, beginning in the late 1990s when many of these techniques were being developed. A new tool that promised a minimally invasive approach to skin rejuvenation found its way into aesthetic medicine. The CO2 laser, already used in surgery for its accuracy and lack of leaving too much scar tissue, was enlisted by plastic surgeons to treat aging skin. The concept was simple. If the beam from a laser were directed to the deeper layer of skin it could heat up water and that would cause the body to go into a repair mode creating more collagen and causing the outer layer of skin to shed. There were some problems with the practical application of this new procedure. Doctors were too aggressive with this treatment causing long healing periods and complications such as, infection, thin skin and white lines. In 2004 Dr. DeBias changed all this and revolutionized the use of the laser with the development of the Active FX in 2004 or fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing protocol as it is technically called. This became and still is the gold standard of minimally invasive skin rejuvena-

tion treatment. As explained on The Institute for Laser and Aesthetic Medicine’s website (www.ilamed.com), it is “a 7-10minute procedure performed by Dr. DeBias utilizing a topical anesthetic and air-cooling device. It is well tolerated with 3 and a ½ days of transformation and recovery. The most dramatic results involve the 3 T’s – Texture, Tone, and Tightness of the facial and neck skin.” The results of treatment are long term and can persist for many years. Most of the effects become visible right away but since new collagen formation can build up gradually, people look even better 3-5 months after the procedure. Although the Active FX treatment has some competitors, it is the still the number one in world for skin texture, tone and tightness. “I have done 19,000 procedures, which is more than anyone in the world.” Dr. Glenn DeBias is considered the world’s foremost expert in the use of this procedure for rejuvenation and maintenance. Aesthetic medicine compared with traditional cosmetic surgery uses non-invasive techniques that create a natural appearance of rejuvenated skin. Men are increasingly turning to physicians for skin treatments and now, according to Dr. DeBias, the ratio is something like 80 percent women to 20 percent men. This male number continues to rise and men who undergo procedures benefit from their new youthful appearance in the same ways women do. They benefit economically, socially and have increased self-confidence. Other minimally invasive procedures that are available at The Institute of Laser and Aesthetic Medicine include cosmetic injectables such as Botox and Restylane, which are quick fixes that can be used in conjunction with other treatments.

The Institute also has several treatments for removal of fatty tissue. One, SculptSure “is the world’s first FDAcleared laser treatment for non-invasive reduction of fat of the flanks and abdomen. In one comfortable 25-minute treatment period, this gentle laser treatment not only reduces fat cells, but encourages the stimulation of collagen resulting in overall skin tightening of the area treated.” Smartlipo MPX™ and Vaser® Lipo & MicroAire® are also available. Another treatment that offers many possibilities is the Venus Freeze, which uses radio frequency to stimulate the generation of collagen. This skin tightening procedure is pain free, and it helps in wrinkle reduction and skin tightening for the face, neck, and other body regions. The bottom line is that people can do something about their appearance without having radical surgery. These procedures are affordable for everyone and because healing is quick, can be done in the normal course of life. Scheduling an appointment with The Institute of or Laser and Aesthetic Medicine is the first step. Once there the best options from a large assortment of treatments can be discussed. The Institute of or Laser and Aesthetic Medicine is located at 10 Hyde Park, Doylestown, PA 18902; 215-230-1804 and 1030 Continental Drive, 3rd Floor, King of Prussia, PA 19406; 610-535-6868. new ultrasound machine to the office. This past March they also added a certified registered nurse practitioner, Kimberly Schea. And in August, they will be adding another physician to the practice, Dr. Zahra De Four. Dr. Jean Fitzgerald is one of three additional physicians with Doylestown Women’s Health Center. She is an active staff member at Doylestown Hospital, and is a member of such organizations as the North American Menopause Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Fitzgerald has been recognized for her work in the local community. She has received a Bucks County Woman of Achievement by the March of Dimes, and served on the Board of Directors for the Bucks County Department of Health, as well as Gilda’s Club Delaware Valley. Currently, she is on the Board of Directors for the Central Bucks Family YMCA. She is working with the Central Bucks Family YMCA on a pregnancy and exercise program. “Most women want to be as healthy as

possible when they discover that they are pregnant. However, not everyone gets the time to address weight loss before pregnancy. Excess weight has an impact on the pregnancy, the fetus, and the mode of delivery,” Dr. Fitzgerald says. Over the years, the practice has delivered over 15,000 babies. Joining Dr. Fitzgerald is Dr. Carolyn Ianieri. Also an active staff member of Doylestown Hospital, Dr. Ianieri is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. She is trained and certified in performing minimally invasive gynecologic da Vinci robotic surgery. With the system, the doctor uses a robotic laparoscopic system through a few small incisions less than one centimeter each. The da Vinci can be used for vaginal hysterectomies, laparoscopic hysterectomies, and advanced laparoscopic surgeries. The third physician at Doylestown Women’s Health Center is Dr. Vivian Yeh. She is an active staff member at

Doylestown Hospital. At the hospital, there is an entire wing devoted to obstetrics, where each patient has a private room. Doylestown Hospital can handle both low risk and high risk pregnancies. They have an intensive care nursery that is manned by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “When you are shepherding someone through a pregnancy, whether it is the first time or the fourth, complicated or low risk, it is truly is a miracle. A pregnancy is the most exciting thing and the most important thing that a woman is going to do in her lifetime,” Dr. Fitzgerald adds. Doctors at Doylestown Women’s Health Center aim to give patients the best care possible. They work with a patient to avoid having a Cesarean section. If a C-section is necessary, they will help the patient to have a vaginal delivery for the second pregnancy. This is called vaginal birth after cesarean, or VBAC. “We are doing more VBACs. Our C-section rate at Doylestown Hospital is very low. We also have the lowest episiotomy

Staying Fit at Any Age

By Vicky Waite

sually I feature a new and even some old products, but for this column I want to write about a woman I have been following for the past 23 years. And what better time to tell you about her, since she is turning 80 years old this June. It is someone who I find intriguing and who proves that you can become fit at any age. Her name is Ernestine Shepherd. She actually was a couch potato until she was 56 years old. Never really worked out. But her story is one that will amaze you. So for this column there won’t be any equipment to put together which makes my husband Bill in his glory! We will catch up with Bill the next time. But this is my chance to tell you about an amazing woman who at 80 seems ageless. And through self-determination and drive she has become the oldest female bodybuilder, breaking the Guinness World Record. Ernestine Shepherd is from Baltimore, Maryland. Ernestine at age 56 and her sister at age 57 went into a gym realizing they needed to get into shape again after years of neglect. There bodies were soft. It was now time to do something about it, they figured. They began working out at a local gym and they liked the results so they began to push themselves harder. Ernestine and her sister were very close. Sadly, her sister died suddenly of an aneurysm, which left Ernestine devastated. She withdrew and got very depressed. She couldn’t get into working out and felt lost for a while. She had panic attacks and high blood pressure. She remembered that the two sisters made a pact with each other to continue to push themselves to be the best. So Ernestine eventually got back into working out and used it as a way to push beyond her sadness. It was her sister who said that they would be in the Guinness World Book of Records as the oldest two-sister bodybuilders. It was her sisters’ wish that kept

Ernestine going for the record. Along the way she met the former Mr. Universe, Yohnnie Shambourger and she asked him if he would work with her because she wanted to become a bodybuilder. He had her ready to be on the stage in just seven months. And she hasn’t looked back since! Through her diet and daily exercise routine she did it. She does it because she practices what she preaches. Ernestine wakes up at 2:30 every morning. She says she never needs an alarm clock. She eats 10 egg whites scrambled and 16 ounces of water and a hand full of walnuts. Her mornings begin in the dark running with a light on her hat with her husband while singing her favorite song. Her songs and thoughts are positive— reinforcing the power of positive thinking. Ernestine started an exercise class to train woman, and even men joined. Everyone is expired. Woman in their 60s are getting off the couch and working out with her. Her spirit and inspiration is contagious. She proves that age is nothing but a number. Ernestine has a toned body, a flat stomach and toned arms and legs. Her appearance is young and fit. If you were told she was 80, you just wouldn’t believe it. She maintains the same schedule everyday. The routine includes drinking a mixture of egg whites too. And, she takes no medicines at all. She is in excellent health. So it is never too late to begin an exercise program. Whether you work out at home or go to the gym. We all know that diet and exercise leads to a longer healthy life. The key is healthy. Being able to enjoy those golden years, by “staying fit at any age.” What does Collin Shepherd, her husband of 59 years has to say about all this? One thing is for sure; he just can’t keep the guys away from her. And, what do I have to say about all this: Move over all those sexy at 60 books and bring on Sexy at 80! Being in the publishing business, it really got me thinking! And with any exercise program, always consult your physician before you begin.
