WORLDPOOL OO FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK EVENTS in pool during the last 12 months have ensured even greater unification in the World Eightball Pool Federation and a greater determination than ever to work together in promoting our sport worldwide. Highlight of the year was again our World Championships which, despite a tight budget, has seen the return of the Sky Sports cameras to broadcast one of the most competitive events we have ever held. With more than 30 hours of transmission spread over several weeks, we have achieved prime time viewing for our events and we thank BSKYB for their support. T h e re w e re m a n y o u t s t a n d i n g performances at the championships with John Roe of England taking the men’s crown and Scotland’s Sue Thompson doing the double with the ladies’ World title and the World Masters. However, everyone at Blackpool, and in the game as a whole, was sad to hear Sue has announced her retirement from the sport. We wish her well for the future in everything she does. My congratulations to all of our champions. A big plus for the 2012 tournament was the introduction of Team Morocco. The North African contingent showed in their first appearance on the world scene that they have the ability to be competing for major awards in the near future. The membership of Morocco also has huge significance for the development of 8-Ball Pool in the region and we welcome them into the WEPF family. It was also great to see West African representation again in the form of Kenya while the return of South Africa was another boost for the Championships and the sport. We were delighted to see them support our world event in numbers. Australia brought their largest group ever with 40 participants, covering every category except in the wheelchair competition. This happens even though

2

players pay in excess of 75% of the cost to be at the Championships. Closer to home, we had a record number of entrants from European countries with Scotland excelling with a massive group both in the World Championships and World Masters events. However, it is not only the World Championships that have seen great success during the past year. The British Lions’ tour to Australia was a major triumph followed by an equally excellent trip to Malta. Well done to the Lions who will be touring South Africa this October to play a Test series against the host country. On a less positive subject, the IPA issue has been a catalyst for the WEPF members to unite and focus on the real job at hand, extra focus on the sport. The issue is a handful of elite players who, with the influence of a “Pied Piper,” believe they can do better under another system. Basically think they can earn more money. Collectively, and of their own accord, they chose not to support this year’s World Championships. However, I make it clear that the WEPF has not closed the door on anyone and will not. There will always be an avenue back. However, the WEPF will not tolerate individuals or associations that try to denigrate or damage our Federation or create rival World Championships. Moving forward we need to continue the catch cry of last year, stick and work together with positive support and encouragement. We work toward another successful televised World Championships in 2013. And discussions with a major sponsor are already taking place. I would like to thank the WEPF executive and indeed all of the dedicated workers throughout the world who are working hard in their respective countries to further promote the sport and the World Eightball Pool Federation.

FAREWELL EUROPEANS, HELLO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS EDITOR’S COMMENTS: Welcome to the fifth edition of World Pool magazine, our first offering of 2013. As always we welcome comments and ideas for future issues. Since out last offering, three UK Tour events have been concluded resulting in wins last year for Nigel Meal and Lee Kendall. Jack Pople opened the New Year by adding his name to the Tour roll of honour and to all three I send my congratulations. Jack’s career breakthrough is chronicled in depth in this edition and he certainly expects to feature strongly this weekend. The other main feature in issue number five is a comprehensive look back at the European Championships, concluded recently at Blackpool. Again, well done to the individual champions, Keith Brewer and Emma Wilkinson. A word of congratulations also to Shirley Jewkes and Jackie Baker, two stalwarts of the women’s game who have now retired from the international game. On a personal level, I would like to say thanks to both for their help and courtesies during my involvement with pool. The Europeans proved a great success and again demonstrated the game is in good health. Indeed, among the many familiar faces, there were plenty of newcomers. Certainly the Moroccan contingent proved a great hit; not only that they produced several notable players who, with a touch more experience, could become serious contenders in the next couple of years. It is an ambition of the World 8-Ball Pool Federation to expand the game into Africa; an ambition that is slowly being realised

with the Moroccans, Kenyans and Ugandans developing the game alongside the powerhouse of South Africa. All four will be represented at the 2013 World Championships which get underway in Blackpool on June 23 and conclude with the finals on July 3. Tickets will be available shortly and would be spectators can keep upto date with the latest news by visiting www.wepf.org England international John Roe will be back to defend his men’s singles crown but the ladies title is very much up for grabs. Sue Thompson is the champion but won’t be back after saying an emotional farewell to the sport after last year’s tournament. And while her absence is a big loss to the sport, it opens the way for her rivals, including new European champion, Wilkinson. There was criticism from outside the WEPF in 2011 when there was no television coverage of the final stages as had become customary. That was hardly due to a lack of trying or the will to make it happen. And after 12 months hard work, the Worlds switched on to Sky again in 2012 with a new TV format that produced the highest viewing figures ever recorded for the Championships. The same schedule returns for 2013 and the concluding stages will again be broadcast on dates to be announced. So, we’re all set for a fascinating World Championship. And if it proves as successful as the recent Europeans, then it will be job done by players, officials and organisers. Enjoy the magazine. Trevor Baxter - Editor Email: trevor@redandwhitesport.co.uk

SPECIAL K BREWER IS EURO STAR AT 51 KEITH Brewer has sights set on a first ever world individual title after regaining the European Championship after a 16-year break. And the Poole based star reckons life begins at 50 rather than 40 after again proving form is temporary, class is permanent. Brewer gave away 30 years to final rival Giuseppe D’Imperio but emerged on the right side of an 8-5 score line. “Giuseppe is going to be a real force,” reckons Brewer. “He reminds me a little bit of Mick Hill when he first came on the scene. “But even though the match was close I was never behind and from 5-all I ran away with the match. “It was certainly one of my most satisfying tournament wins coming so long after I won my last European title.” You need to delve back to 1997 to discover Brewer’s only other Euro crown. Tony Holgate was runner-up on that occasion, a position Brewer match in 1998 when Rob Chilton denied him in his only other European final appearance. “People have already asked me about the Worlds,” he admitted. “And if I have got it in me to win the Europeans, I have got it in me to win the Worlds. “I’d like to think I have anyway. I actually had a decent run last year and got to the

4

last 16. “I know most of the players I will be up against so on that score I have nothing to fear. It’s all about confidence and I have got plenty of that at the moment.” Much of the new found belief has come from his successes on the UK Senior Tour. He’s won seven in a row and undefeated in 45 matches. And he took that form into the Euros where only a handful of players managed to give him a game. Defending champion Jack Pople crumbled 6-1 and by all accounts was fortunate to get one. Former World Junior and Under 21 champion Pat McCarron was brushed aside 7-1. Little known Welshman, Mike Bebb, provided Brewer with his sternest test in the last 16. “I didn’t feel 100 percent confident going into the game because there hadn’t been any team matches in the morning so I hadn’t had any real practice,” he recalled. “Mike was like a maniac potting machine and I was always behind. Eventually, my experience helped me get over the line.” Brewer survived and prospered as the rest faltered. “Since I turned 50 my game seems to have gone back to what it used to be. “I won the last IPA Tour event I played in at the end of 2011 which was really pleasing. And becoming European champion again, when there are so many great youngsters coming through, is just as satisfying.”

WILKINSON IS CUT ABOVE THE REST TO CLAIM LADIES TITLE Emma Wilkinson remembers little about the road accident that nearly claimed her life.

“After that everything else was just really a blank.” It was December 1997 when Wilkinson came close to death.

But the Sunderland born player has a perfect memory when it comes to recalling her first major championship success. The 22-year-old Wearsider stunned the game’s big hitters, including former world championships, Lynette Horsburgh and Emma Cunningham, to lift the trophy. “I thought I had a 50-50 chance before I got there,” says the softly spoken champion.

The collision left her with a fractured skull, swelling on the brain and broken legs. Mum Janice revealed:“When she was in the hospital in Newcastle, I had to sign a form before she had an operation, because there was a 50/50 chance she could be brain damaged.

“But I had a really tough draw. I couldn’t have had it much harder than playing Lynette and Emma. “However, I managed to come through those matches before beating Michelle in the final.” An 8-4 score line gave her victory over Northern Ireland rival Michelle Rooney, the 2011 European runner-up. That followed after a 5-4, last 16 win against Horsburgh and a 6-5 victory over Cunningham in the last four. Indeed, both girls were former European title holders while Rooney is an experienced campaigner at top level. Wilkinson certainly deserves her time in the spotlight after the near fatal tragedy 15 years ago. “I don’t remember much about what happened at all,” said Wilkinson who practices on a table at her parents’ pub, the Oddies. “I remember my friend running across the road. And because I was younger than her, I ran after her.

“It was the worst thing I have had to do.” The scars have healed but Wilkinson still admits:”Sometimes my brain just switches off and I find it hard to talk to people.” Happily, her pool career looks to be going from strength to strength. “I was playing in competitions when I was 11 and it’s just gone from there,” she explained. “I don’t really know what attracted me to pool but I just started to enjoy it.” A member of the England Ladies side which beat Northern Ireland in the team final, Wilkinson is now a genuine world title contender. “I know now I can beat these girls,” she explained. “And with Sue Thompson having retired, it has opened up the tournament for a lot of girls. “Of course, it won’t be easy but if I keep practicing hard hopefully I will have a chance.” Defending champion Amy Beauchamp lost 5-1 to Cunningham in the preliminaries while new England women’s captain, Barbara Taylor, also went out at the same stage, beaten by Collette Henriksen.

LOUIS THE FIRST LEICESTERSHIRE LAD IS TOP JUNIOR LOUIS Heathcote dreams of being the next Mark Selby but this would be snooker star is not a bad pool player either. The 15-year-old schoolboy showed his small table skills with victory at the European Championships in Blackpool. “It was an amazing feeling at the end because I just didn’t expect to win,” he said after succeeding team mate Joe O’Connor as defending champion. “And I actually play more snooker than pool,” explained the former England Under 14 champion who practices at Club 147. “One day, I would like to be a professional snooker player. I think you can turn pro at 16 but I don’t think I am going to do that. “I am not good enough at the moment and need some more experience,” says the Louis Heathcote - European Junior Champion promising young cue all-rounder with a played that well.” Indeed, he found best competitive break of 128. “I’ve met himself 3-1 down in his last 16 game Mark a few times,” says Heathcote of the against Steven McGurn but pulled through 2006 World 8-Ball Pool champion and to win 5-4. “I think he was top of the three-time Wembley Masters champion. averages and it was a hard game,” agreed Heathcote, a pupil at Beaumont Leys “But I actually practice with another School. “This is my final year before I go to professional, Tom Ford. People have told College so hopefully then I will have more me I should stick with snooker. “But I really time to practice,” he added. BAILIED OUT-ALISTAIR CASHES IN TO BECOME OVER 50’S KING

THANKS to the generosity of a teenager and an unexpected victory for one of his rivals, Yorkshireman Alistair Bailie is the new European Over 50’s champion. Youngster Tom Scase put up the money for family friend and coach Bailie to enter the Championships. Northern Ireland’s Davy McGurn did the entire field a favour by ousting red hot favourite Keith Brewer in the last 32. And that allowed Bailie, 51, to play his part by defeating everyone else in front of him to end Bill Rigby’s two-year reign as champion. “I have been a bit strapped for cash because I have been trying to get a new business off the ground,” explained Bailie. “And I wasn’t sure whether I was going to enter. “But Tom is the son of the landlord and landlady whose pub, the Railway, I play for. I have also coached him since he was about 11. “So, he offered to sponsor me for which I am very grateful. “Of course, Keith losing opened up the tournament. Everyone is in awe of him and fortunately I managed to take advantage.

Alistair Bailie - European Seniors Champion

reversed the role and let him have first ball. “I was also 3-1 down to Frank Wright in the last 32 but managed to win that one 5-3.” Bailie from Dunscroft, near Doncaster, dropped only three frames in his remaining three games, including a 7-2 win over roommate Shane Robinson. But Robinson didn’t finish out of pocket as Bailie sportingly offered to split his winnings. “Shane didn’t need asking twice,” laughed Bailie, a regular in the Retford and Dinnington Pool Leagues.

“The pressure changed a little though because everyone said I was going to win it.” Indeed, Bailie’s victory wasn’t achieved without several scares, including a nervy 54, last 16 success against Welshman Steve Brindley. “I was 2-0 up and felt I was in cruise control,” he explained. “All of a sudden I was 4-2 down but fathomed his game plan just in time.

“The European is definitely the best individual tournament I have won and I just hope there are one of two more. The World title would be nice.”

“Steve wanted me to take the first ball every time and was trying to contain me. When I realised what he was upto, I

Bill Rigby’s bid for a hat-trick of wins came unstuck in the last 32 where he was beaten by Frenchman Angelo Soares.

SHER-CLASS

THERESA’S WHEELY GOOD SHOW Theresa Sheridan achieved a remarkable Euro double at the Imperial Hotel but it’s one she hopes no one else wins. In 1989, the Leicester player was an ablebodied member of England’s European ladies winning team. Twenty four years later Sheridan, 50, captured the wheelchair singles after a hectic round of matches. In between, she suffered a life changing accident, being left paralysed after falling down a set of stairs. Already a mum of one, Sheridan was due to get married a few weeks later, hoping also to add to her young family. Playing pool was the last thing on her mind and it wasn’t until 2003 she picked up a cue again with any serious intent. “I was invited to the World Championships at Blackpool because the EPA heard I had played in the past,” she explained. “But I hadn’t played and believe me playing in a wheelchair is harder than playing standing up. I was also and still am in a lot of pain. “I remember being 2-0 down to the England captain but ended up beating him 5-2. I didn’t do anything in the rest of the tournament but I got the bug again.” However, until her round robin victory earlier this month, Sheridan, in her own words, was “always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” That tag has finally gone as she finished top of the round robin section, despite losing her opening game. Even then victory was tinged with sadness. Sheridan, an administrator for a Leicestershire Housing Association, dedicated her win to partner Paul, a builder.

Theresa Sheridan with Alan Benton EEPF Secretary

“He was involved in a road traffic accident last year and nearly lost his life,” she explained. “He was the main bread winner and finds it hard that he can’t work anymore. I think he appreciates what I’ve been through but it’s still tough for him. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. So, this victory is for Paul and hopefully one at the Worlds in June.” Sheridan’s other hope is to test her skills against a greater strength field as only Phil Hendrickson and Gary Simpson provided opposition in Blackpool. “And it would be nice if there were a few more female players. “The EPA are very good in promoting wheelchair pool so hopefully we can find some other girls who play.”

JEWKES AND BAKER SAY INTERNATIONAL FAREWELLS ON HIGH NOTE

England Ladies - European Champions

TWO giants of the ladies game, Shirley Jewkes and Jackie Baker, chose the European Championships to announce their retirement from the international scene. So, it was fitting that England team manager Jewkes, and skipper Baker should go out on a high note. Kent star Baker, part of the England set-up for nearly a quarter of a century, helped England ladies to the team prize. And of course the successful team manager was Yorkshire born Jewkes. Both intend to have some involvement in the sport. Indeed, it would be disappointing if such experience and knowledge was lost to the game. However, neither have too many definite future plans though Baker has accepted an invitation to take up her singles place at the 2013 WEPF World Championships in Blackpool where she will be third seed. Their announcement to quit, however, follows on from Sue Thompson’s decision to hang up her cue after winning the world ladies singles crown last season. On the table, there were few real surprises as England retained their trophy at Northern Ireland’s expense. For the Ulster girls, it

was third time unlucky as it followed defeats at last year’s Euros and World Championships. In an attempt to encourage more ladies to play the game, each country was allowed two teams at this year’s Championships. As a result, two strong England outfits locked cues in the semi-finals, resulting in victory for the A team. In the other last four clash, Northern Ireland ended Scotland’s interest. And that was disappointment for Scotland’s former world champion, Lynette Horsburgh. The Blackpool based mum topped the averages in the round robin stages with 14 frame wins from 18 outings. Lagging only fractions behind were Emma Cunningham from Northern Ireland and the ever dependable Baker with 13 frame victories. England made an encouraging start to the final, winning four of the first five frames. They then added three of the next five frames to stand on the brink of victory at 7-2. Jo Kent prolonged the agony for the Ulster contingent but at 7-4 Amy Beauchamp stepped upto the mark to beat former world champion Cunningham to clinch the silverware.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE FOR CILLIA AS MALTA STUN EURO RIVALS Carmel Cillia, the newly elected president of the Malta Pool Aassociation, was one of the proudest men at the 2013 European Championships for one very good reason. Cillia watched his nation’s men’s team collect the prestigious “A” Section Trophy. As a result, they will also get a chance to defend their trophy on home territory as Malta will host the 2014 European event. With a record number of entrants for this year’s championships, every division was fiercely contested. However, nowhere was competition as fierce as it was in the “A” Section competition featuring arguably the four strongest nations in the world contesting the semi-finals. Scotland defeated holders ireland 8-7 while Malta deposed of current world champions England by the same margin-a famous win. it was also very tight from the round-robin stages, which decided the teams for the semi-finals. Scotland led the way by winning seven out of eight matches while the other three semi-final teams won five of their eight matches.

12

Welshman Russell Burgess had the honour of topping the averages after the round robin phase. Experienced Burgess claimed 17 wins from his 24 outings. However, it was touch and go as Clinton Attard and Antoine Cuschieri of Malta plus frenchman Cedric Ruiz each registered 16 wins. And so to the final. After the first session malta edged into a narrow 3-2 lead and they repeated the score line in the second section. However, the scots love a challenge and refused to accept the inevitable. So, they battled back strongly with brilliant wins by Pollock and McIntosh to level the game at 6-all. Back came Malta as Mario Cutajar defeated three-time world junior champion and 2011 British Lion, Darren Matthew it was looking good for the George Cross Island with their top two from the averages still to play. And Cuschieri showed his undoubted class with victory over Marc Fleming to give Malta the title. Whilst Cuschieri topped the averages, he had suffered three defeats in his round robin matches against Scotland. So, he showed commendable spirit to hold his nerve and win the frame that really mattered for his side.

SUPER SCOTS

STORM TO STUNNING B TEAM WIN

Scotland Mens - European B Champions

After seeing their A team miss out on silverware at the last hurdle, the Scottish B team was determined not to suffer the same disappointment.

Recovering their composure, England regained the lead through Chris Gill only for Matt Brannan to play a real captain’s part by squaring the contest once more.

And with a final against ‘auld enemy’ England facing them, the Scots hardly needed any extra motivation.

Neil Armstrong then gave Scotland the lead for the first time in the contest by potting his way to frame 13. Not to be outdone, the English lads set-up a decider thanks to

If they did, then defeat in the round robin stages certainly made them more determined not to finish second best. The Scots reached the final with a 9-6 semi-final success over their C team-further indication of their strength in depth these days. Favourites England knocked out a promising Northern Ireland side in their semi-final. When the two teams met in the group stages it was the English potters who emerged 9-6 winners on the way to topping the table. So, when the hosts claimed four of the first five frames, there didn’t look any way back for the underdogs. But that’s not how it turned out. The Scots stormed back into contention by reversing the score line in the second session to make it 5-5 with everything to play for.

the coolness of Darren Price leaving the title resting on a one-frame shootout. Liam Stanley was handed the chance of winning it for the English while opposing him was Garry Southern. The shoot-out was a repeat of the round robin encounter won by Southern. And so it proved again as Stanley was unable to gain revenge. Not so many years ago, Scotland were on their knees as a pool nation. But with a lot of hard work and a dedicated management team, they have returned as one of the strongest squads in the world. Their performances at the 2013 European Championships was fitting reward for their endeavours and an inspiration to other nations.

ALL-IRELAND JUNIOR FINAL AS FAVOURITES COME UNSTUCK

Ireland - European Junior Champions

There was a major shock in the European Juniors team event where a new name was added to the roll of honour. The engraver had expected to be inscribing England onto the trophy again. Instead, the 2012 World and European champions came unstuck as the Irish fought through to make it an unexpected final line-up. England’s reign as champions came to an end in the last four when they lost to the Republic of Ireland youngsters. In fact, the holders were crushed 8-2 in definitely a game to forget. In the other semi-final, Northern Ireland defeated Wales 8-6. There was some individual compensation

for Steven McGurn of Northern Ireland who collected the player of the tournament trophy, thanks to a record of 16 wins in 18 matches. The Ulster youngsters made an encouraging start to the final leading 3-2 after the first sessions. But the eventual champions upped the pressure in the second session, taking four of the next five frames to lead 6-4. And even McGurn was powerless to halt the march to the trophy as he lost against Jordan Doyle. Fittingly, Kevin McWeeney potted the title winning ball to make it three out of three for him in the final to give the Republic a first ever Junior title.

GR-EIGHT! ENGLAND UNDER 21’S ENSURE GUESTS DON'T GATECRASH PARTY

England - European U21's Champions

England, the European and World Under 21 champions, duly defended their Euro crown but had a final scare into the bargain. Certainly, the English lads won’t take anything for granted when they return to Blackpool in June to try and retain their World prize. As much as the tournament was about them winning for an eighth consecutive year, it was also about the emergence of a new pool nation. Helping to spread the 8-Ball gospel now are Morocco, invited to Lancashire as guests of the European 8-Ball Pool federation. And they certainly made their most of their visit, reaching the final before going down 8-4 against much more experienced opposition.

16

They certainly showed plenty of skill to suggest they will be a major threat at the World Championships. Judging by the quality in their team, they will be among the front runners with a touch more practice under world rules. The scores were level at 3-all after the second session before England edged in front at 4-3. Amine Amiri responded in the next frame to again level the scores. In the end, Nigel Clarke, the euro under 21 singles champion, took out Masskini Al Oussam, one of the best players of the tournament, to win the decider. Al Oussam and Amiri are now looking forward to the worlds and there is no doubt they will become the stars of the future for Morocco.

Ireland Seniors - European Seniors Champions 2013

TEAM Ireland upset the formbook to celebrate their first appearance in a European Championship seniors final with a shock victory. Seniors pool is the largest growing sector of the sport, especially in England and Scotland. So, it was a surprise when the Irish veterans upset defending champions England, 5-2 winners over Scotland in 2012, to claim the trophy.

And it was game set and match when Alistair Ballle, the individual champion, was unable to prevent Patrick Farrelly, the 2012 individual runner-up, securing frame seven. Welshman Steve Brindley was the player of the tournament with 19 wins from 27 starts.

There was no hint of the drama to follow when England’s A team knocked out their B side 5-3 in the semi-finals. However, the Irish were also impressive 5-2 winners against Northern Ireland.

Ireland's success was all the more remarkable given the formidable nature of their opponents. In addition, to new individual champion, Alistair Bailie, England's squad included Bill Rigby, seniors champion for the previous two years, and 2013 European title winner, Keith Brewer, who dropped only three of 21 frames in the round robin section.

Their hopes of a tournament breakthrough increased considerably when they led 4-2 after the first two sessions.

In contrast, the Irish trio were coming together for the first time as were the Northern Ireland threesome.

‘CIDER BOYS’ HAVE PLENTY TO CELEBRATE

SOMERSET RISING

SUPER Somerset wrote themselves into Inter County history with a first ever Men’s A team success at Vauxhall Holiday Park.

The West Country boys upset the form book to beat mighty Staffordshire in the final with a famous comeback win. Certainly, defending champions Staffordshire started favourites to retain their title. And there was nothing in the early stages to suggest they wouldn’t prevail. They led 7-4, 13-9 and 18-15 going into the fourth and final leg. However, Somerset hit back with four-in-a-row. Jonathan Hughes, and England captain Lee Kendall stopped the rot but Mark Burr, Ben Holley, and Mark Bell sent the Somerset contingent into raptures as they completed a 23-20 success. In the semi-finals, Staffs defeated Northamptonshire 23-20 while Somerset overcame Cambridgeshire A 24-22. The champions elect held a comfortable 19-14 lead going into the final leg but from 22-17 in front they saw their opponents win the next five to force a play-off. However, Antony Doble, and Gareth Manning averted the danger to send Somerset through to the final. But back to the beginning and the holders made a positive start defeating Devon 2315. Somerset opened with a 23-20 success against Surrey 5 while Lancashire, without

an A team title since 2006, enjoyed a 2312 win over West Midlands. In the last 16, Northamptonshire beat Cheshire 23-15, Cambridgeshire accounted for North Yorkshire while arguably the tie of the round paired London, champions in 2010 and 2011, against Leicestershire, winners in 2007 and 2008. London led 16-6 at halfway and seemed destined for the quarters. Instead, the Leicestershire lads rallied, taking leg three 7-4 before winning the first eight frames in the final leg. Frank Costello, and Jon Runghen managed to take London to a play-off but Shaun Payne, and Gavin Lomax eventually secured victory for the ‘Foxes.’ Graham Berruto was the hero for Northamptonshire in their quarter-final against Northumberland, clinching the last play-off frame after Danny Smith and Nikki Murtaugh cancelled each other out.

WORLDPOOL OO accounted for Northants 23-17. Other last 16 winners were: Norfolk, Surrey, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Buckinghamshire and GMC. Quarter final victors were: Surrey, Lancashire, West Midlands and GMC.

Winners Juniors - Cleveland

Staffs and Leicestershire were 11-all after two legs before the eventual finalists took charge to win 23-18. Cambridgeshire beat Humberside 24-23 in a rollercoaster contest while Somerset proved too strong for Lancashire winning 23-13 to reach the semi-finals. The Red Rose County may have wilted before the penultimate round but they positively bloomed in the B Team tournament to beat neighbours Greater Manchester 23-12 in the final. Staffordshire were again defending champions and reached the quarters before losing 24-23 in the quarters to West Midlands. Paul Waterfield and Ryan Killian did the business for West Mids against Daz Henshall’s solitary success for the holders. However, Greater Manchester ended West Midlands’ hopes in the semis while Lancashire, winners in 2011, knocked out Surrey 23-13. Earlier, Nottinghamshire made a flying start defeating Somerset 23-10, Staffordshire beat Devon by the same score, Surrey knocked out Essex 23-16 and Lancashire

Kicking-off a weekend also including the National Under 21 singles plus England men’s and ladies trials was the Youth event. Cleveland were the defending junior champions and they ended the weekend by retaining their trophy courtesy of a 23-13 victory over Warwickshire. Cleveland did the damage in the third leg, winning 9-2. They opened their campaign with a 23-14 success over Gloucestershire, Bedfordshire knocked out another fancied county, Staffordshire 23-19 while new boys Lincoln lost 23-15 to Bristol. GMC, last year’s Knockout Cup winners, beat Nottinghamshire 23-17. The winning quarter-finalists were: Bedfordshire, Cleveland, Warwickshire and Kent. Cleveland defeated Bedfordshire 2319 in the last four while Warwickshire disposed of Kent 23-20. The strongest Inter County favourites in all categories were the all-conquering Kent Ladies side. They had won every year since 2007 when Lancashire denied them in 2010. And they looked in good form beating Norfolk 2311 in their opening contest. Lancashire opened with a 23-16 victory against South Yorkshire but laboured to a 23-21 quarterfinal success over Staffordshire.

Other quarter-final winners were: Cleveland (23-15 v Hampshire), Kent (23-20 v Leicestershire) and Somerset (23-13 v North Yorkshire). So could it be a Somerset double? Sadly for the county the answer was ‘no’ as Lancashire beat them 23-14 in the semis. Kent overcame Cleveland by the same score. And so to the final. Lancashire clinched the first two legs 6-5 and the third 7-4 to lead 19-14. The end was in sight for Kent and they managed just two further frames before having to hand over their prized trophy. Day two of the weekend saw the start of the Knockout Cup. Holders Lancashire lost 23-21 in a changing of the guard moment against Essex. The Essex boys followed up that quarter-final success by defeating Northumberland 23-21 and Leicestershire 23-16 in the final. Leicestershire’s defence of the Men’s B Knockout Cup title didn’t last beyond the opening round as they went down 23-18 against Devon. The eventual champions were Staffordshire courtesy of a 23-12 win against Nottinghamshire. Staffordshire won the Ladies Knockout Cup by virtue of wins against: Worcestershire (23-11), Leicestershire (23-11) and South Yorkshire (23-18). The final of the Youth Knockout Cup proved a thriller. Holders GMC lost 23-

20 in the semi-finals to Staffordshire who then beat Leicestershire 24-22 in the final courtesy of Zac Cooper and Ryan Dimarco winning a play-off. Michael Hope is the new National Under 21 Singles champion after beating John Egan 6-2. Jack Smithers and Joshua Riddaway were beaten semi-finalists. The England ladies qualifiers are: Nicola Comrie (Herefordshire), Michaela Lester (Northamptonshire), Emma Senior (Leicestershire), Tina Allton (Northamptonshire),Sarah Nicklin (Worcestershire), Anne-Louise Arkle (Cleveland) Sue Osborn (Suffolk). Anne Taylor is the England interim manager after Shirley Jewkes retired after 15 years in the post. Barbara Taylor has replaced Jackie Baker as captain. The men’ qualifiers were: Robert Wharne (Staffordshire), Joe Prince (London), Kevin Rainbow (Durham), Mark Singleton (Derbyshire), Darren McVicar (Devon), Andy Lakin (Humberside), Daniel Eaton-Lees (West Midlands), and Darrell Bareham (Worcestershire).

WEPF BOARD MEMBERS MEET SNOOKER CHIEF FOR CROSS PARTY TALKS.

WORLDPOOL OO

A recent meeting between the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) and newly elected international snooker boss Jim Leacy could have future, far reaching implications for the two sports. Irishman Leacy is the long standing chairman of the Irish Snooker and Billiards Association (RIBSA) but is now the President of the International Billiards and Snooker Federation, replacing Frenchman, Pascal Guillaume. Leacy duly accepted an invitation to visit the recent European 8-Ball Pool Championships in Blackpool for talks with leading pool officials. Among discussions - held at the Imperial Hotel - was the subject of closer co-operation and dialogue between the various world snooker bodies and the World Eightball Pool Federation. Further meetings are planned in the near future with the possibility of planning joint

ventures between the cue sports organisations. On behalf of the WEPF, general secretary, Alan Benton, thanked Leacy for his attendance and issued an invitation to be a guest of honour at the 2013 World 8Ball Pool Championships starting in June and to be televised for Sky Sports transmission. Leacy’s other pressing engagement was to secure a sponsorship deal between the IBSF and leading cloth manufacturers, Strachan. As a result, Strachan 6811 tournament cloth will continue to be the official cloth supplier for the IBSF. Both governing bodies share a long standing connection with Strachan who have supplied fabric and sponsorship for the 21 years that the World Eightball Pool Championships have been held. Strachan 6811 has also been used at the World Snooker Championships for more than 30 years and at IBSF World Championships since 1997.

NEW STRUCTURE AND NEW TOUR PLANNED FOR NORTHERN IRELAND

WORLDPOOL OO

The recently concluded European Championships in Blackpool attracted record participation, thanks in no small part due to a bumper Scottish representation.

However, lest we forget, the game continues to thrive in other countries, notably in Northern Ireland. The Ulster contingent provided three teams for the various men’s sections, including the B squad which reached the semi-finals of its own event. The ladies again battled their way through to the final of their competition only to lose to a powerful England squad determined to give captain Jackie Baker a winning send-off from international competition. In Michelle Rooney and Emma Cunningham, Northern Ireland also produced the individual ladies singles finalist and a beaten semi-finalist. In the Juniors, watch out for Steven McGurn who topped the round robin averages and also helped his nation into the junior team final. At the other end of the age spectrum, Mark Bradburn was a semi-finalist in the seniors’ competition while the team also reached the last four. However, the European story is only the start of resurgence in the country. It is happening because of a new regional framework that has been introduced covering all of Northern Ireland. Four areas will have their own committee headed up by a Regional Director and Regional delegate. The Director and delegate will sit on the National executive to be chaired by Frank Wright of Ballycastle. The new National executive has already

22

held several meetings and is now eagerly looking forward to developing their teams for the World Championships in Blackpool. This new era for the Federation has the object of developing World Rules in Northern Ireland to establish strong teams who will represent the nation at the major championships.

For 2014, there will be trials held in all areas to provide opportunities for all World Rules players to represent their country. In addition to the European and World championships, teams will be entered into the Home International event in Scotland to be held September 26 to 29. So, there is certainly plenty to play for. It will not just be National level players who will benefit from the increased activity planned by the Federation. There are many internal competitions to be launched enabling all age groups an opportunity to participate in Eightball Pool. A major new event to be announced shortly is an individual tour with a £3,200 prize fund. The top four players at the end of the Tour will be included in the National squad for 2014, to represent Northern Ireland at the European, World and Home International competitions. This is only the start for what is a very interesting development for world rules in the country. We welcome interest from any league or association who want to join in with the new Federation, contact the chairman Frank Wright on 07801-018639 for further details of membership.

WORLDPOOL OO AUSSIES NAME WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD Victoria’s Marc Robertson and Renata Delahunty from South Australia took the singles honours at the Australian 8-Ball Ball Pool Championships. But it will be a new look Aussie squad travelling to Blackpool in June for the WEPF World 8-Ball Pool Championships. The poor dollar to pound exchange rate for Australians coming to Britain has resulted in a number of leading players staying at home. However, the ‘Green and Golds’ are determined to send over a competitive squad. And the positive to fielding a less experienced side is that it provides more players in Australia with an opportunity to gain international experience and as a result improve the standard of the overall game in Australia. As a warm-up for the World Championships, the Aussie squad will enjoy a stopover in South African to play a Test Match series. (June 16-19) This was a regular feature in the late 90s and as well as being a great promotion for the game, it is good preparation for Australia on tables similar to those to be used at the World Championships. Judging by the standard produced at the 2012 Australian Nationals, competition will be fierce, both in South Africa and England. The tournament returned to the popular holiday destination of Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The Championships were held over two weeks culminating with over 250 competitors taking part from all over Australia. The State of Victoria dominated taking four of the six major team and singles titles.

As a result, Australia will be fielding teams in every World event. They will also provide a referee in their total touring party of 42 which includes supporters. This is a true reflection of how Australian players strive to experience the excitement of competing at World Championships against the top players in the world. Credit must go to the Australian Eightball Federation Committee that each year makes the Championships a high priority in the promotion of the sport in Australia. SCOTTISH ‘INVASION OF BLACKPOOL IS EURO BOOST

WORLDPOOL OO

The major prizes might have eluded Scottish pool stars at the European Eightball Championships in Blackpool but there was a distinct Scottish flavour to the ever expanding tournament.

Indeed, the Scottish Eightball Pool Federation again demonstrated its full commitment to the European Eightball Pool Federation by becoming the largest participating nation. The Scots were represented at all levels and set the tone for the Championships right from the opening ceremony as the 150 strong team were piped into the into the auditorium singing their stirring anthem “Flower of Scotland”. The piper certainly attracted much interest in particular from the visiting Moroccan team! On the tables, the teams all showed their quality. The Scottish Men’s B side, captained by British Lion Matt Brannon, were crowned champions of Europe after a memorable victory against the English. The Tartan aces fought back superbly after England took a 4-0 lead. Victory was secured in a final frame decider thanks to ice-cool Garry Southern. Rab Warrender

24

also topped the player of the tournament table on the way to the title. The Scottish ‘C’ team, led by experienced international player Andy Gerrie, reached the semi-finals, only losing out to the Scottish B team on their way to the final. The men’s A team, led by Patty McCarron, romped to the final, topping the table before the knockout stages. The dream double was not to be with Malta securing an 8-7 final win. A steadily improving Scottish Ladies team just lost out in the semi-final to Northern Ireland ladies. Former world champion Lynette Horsburgh topped the ladies individual performance rankings.

The SEPF Junior team went out on a head to head result but again showed just how far they have progressed. Further strong showings in the individual events confirmed the best Scottish performances for many years. Junior Neil Tough reached the quarter finals while Susan Collins and McCarron reached the semi-finals of their respective events. McCarron eventually lost to eventual winner Keith Brewer. The closing presentation and banquet

WORLDPOOL OO

featured a further appearance of a trio of pipers who entertained the event with renditions of ‘Highland Cathedral’ and ‘Scotland the Brave’ among others, leading to outbreaks of spontaneous highland dancing! Scottish team manager Mike McDonald led the players in a passionate rendition of ‘Flower of Scotland’. George Harwood, President of the European Eightball Pool Federation, thanked all those involved in the resurgence of Scotland on the international stage.

He also announced the welcome news that Scotland had won the right to host the Home International Championships for two years. The first event will be held at Pettycur Bay, Fife from September 26-29, 2013. With all home nations fully committed to attend the event, with a newly refreshed format, it looks certain to be a fantastic addition to the international calendar. Indeed, with Scottish teams already announced for the forthcoming WEPF World Championships commencing on June 23 2013. Scotland looks forward to a further step forward.

EPA LEADING THE WAY AT ALL LEVELS Record numbers flocked to Vauxhall Holiday Park for the English Pool Association’s first National event of 2013 the National Inter-County Finals. And it proved another massive success. So, I would like to congratulate not only the teams that won their respective sections but every team that participated in our blue ribbon event. Also staged over the weekend were the England trials and National Under 21’s Championships. And while on England matters, presentations were made to Lee Kendall, who has now completed 25 years’ service for his country, and Jackie Baker, who had represented England for 24 years. For 15 consecutive years, Baker was ladies’ captain. Jackie, Shirley Jewkes – ladies’ team manager and Judi Collins- youth team manager- have all now retired from their positions and we thank them for their dedication and efforts over the years. At the recent European Championships, individually, England players cleaned up, but in the team events, we didn’t do so well. Malta won the men’s competition, Scotland B won their section and Ireland won both the Junior and Senior tournaments.

to time constraints, this is the maximum amount that can participate. Needless to say there is now a reserve/waiting list to gain entry onto the Tour. Lee Kendall was the player to beat in 2012, finishing top of the rankings. With over £120,000 in prize money and the Premier League expanding to 16 players for 2013, the UKPT is the tour to be on and the tour that is going places. It also looks like part of the Premier League may be televised by Sky, later in the year, watch this space. More recently, EPA has just held its 35th AGM. Only two main issues of any real note came out of the meeting. Firstly, that EPA will be asking the World 8Ball Pool Federation to consider putting on a Seniors’ World Masters Championships. As there are currently a Ladies and Men’s Masters, our Association feel that this is the way forward. The Seniors is just getting bigger and bigger. Secondly, a motion was put forward to allow Blackball players to join our County set-ups. This was massively defeated again, with more votes against this year, than last. This tells the EPA that our players, from local leagues to County, want to play World Rules and have nothing to do with Blackball.

England didn’t finish empty handed and came away with the Ladies and Under 21’s titles. This was another fabulous tournament with more teams and players than ever before and this was down to the hard work and commitment shown by the European 8-Ball Pool Federation.

The message was sent out again by the AGM meeting, you have a choice, either EPA or Blackball, but not both.

The UK Pool Tour is now massive with entries for 2013 limited to 192 players.Due

Geoff Wilson EPA Chairman

The EPA continues to grow, with our members supportive of everything that we do. We must be doing something right.

The World Masters

CRACKER-JACK EURO KING POPLE POTS ANOTHER TITLE JACK POPLE proved his doubters wrong by adding the World Masters title to his European crown. And the 22-year-old Londoner is keen to add more trophies to his collection by the end of the season. Pople shrugged off his early exit from the World Championship to win the Masters at the expense of Australia’s John ‘Rusty’ Wheeler. “I think there were one or two who wondered whether I could back up the Europeans,” he explained. “So, I was pleased with the Masters but the Euros was probably extra pleasing because it was my first major win. “I didn’t play that great in the Worlds if I am honest even though I felt I was playing well enough before the tournament. “In the early rounds of the Masters I was fairly comfortable but when I got to the last 32 the players started to get harder and harder. “But in the last 16 I came up against JJ Faul who I used to play alongside on the same team. I beat him 8-0 in about 30 minutes and didn’t miss a ball. “I thought then I might be in with a chance.” Pople, studying for a Sports Science degree at the University of Kent, dispatched Andy O’Hara (8-4), in the quarters but almost came unstuck against Irishman Karl O’Donoghue in the semis.

30

“That was probably the best game I played all week,” he recalled. “I was 7-5 up but then didn’t get another shot and found myself 8-7 down. “I managed to nick one to force a decider when Karl snookered himself on his last ball. “Fortunately, he let me in and I managed to get over the line. I always knew it was going to be a difficult match because Karl is one of the best players in Europe and had got to the quarters of the Worlds. Pople also found himself up against it in the final against Aussie National Singles champion, Wheeler. “I had a few calls from people on my team back home who knew a bit about him. But I was a bit worried when I was 5-2 down. “Fortunately, I managed to battle back and get 9-6 up. He came back to 9--8 before I got the last frame after he went in-off.” Pople collected £5,000 for his win. “I was thinking about getting a new car and taking the girlfriend on holiday. So, the money will come in handy.” With two championships in the bag, Pople still hopes to finish the year with more. “There’s the National singles and the Champion of Champions to go for. So, to get one of those would be great.” Ian Kettel, World Masters champion in 2007, reached the last 32 before losing to Frenchman, Benoit Dumez.

TOUR 1 REPORT

WHITE SMOKE AS ‘THE POPE’ MAKES TOUR BREAKTHROUGH Jack Pople may have lost his European crown but the former London Youth star has a first UK Tour title in his locker.

Pople’s elation at his Tour success soon disappeared as evergreen Keith Brewer ended his European interest for another year. “Some of the England lads were talking afterwards and I think we just wore ourselves out.

The University of Kent sports science student defeated Gavin Lomax 8-5 in a late night final at Blackpool’s Imperial Hotel. And though the ‘Pope’ slipped up a week later at the same venue as he tried to defend his Euro trophy, he was delighted by his Tour breakthrough.

“I didn’t play very well but at least I still lost to someone who went on to win it.” And Pople can make up for his disappointment later this year. “We’ve got the Home Internationals back and of course the Worlds. I’ve got to try and retain my World Masters as well so there is plenty to play for.”

“It’s good to get the first one out of the way, especially in the first Tour of the year,” he acknowledged. “But it was really tough throughout the weekend and I think by the time I got to the Europeans myself and the other England lads were burned out.”

Lee Kendall, who won the first and last Tours of 2012, lost 7-5 in the last 16 in a re-match of last season’s World Championship final against John Roe.

Pople, who will defend his World Masters title this summer, defeated Gavin Lomax 8-5 in the final. “The match didn’t go on until late and we were both shattered,” he explained. “It was probably only 45 minutes behind schedule but it had been a long day.

Roe slipped up 7-6 against Sutton in the quarters while Pople defeated Guiseppe D’Imperio 7-3 to make the final four. Tour One Results Last 32: Ollie O’Boyle bt Miles Deleuse 7-2, Richard Gifford bt Shaun Brearley 7-4, Ben Clark bt James Blant 7-3, Gavin Lomax bt Jason Toovey 7-2, Tom Church bt Ben Flack 7-4, Keith Brewer bt Scott Carpener 7-4, Robert Wharne bt James Green 7-5, Lee Grout bt Colin Evans 7-2, Neil Toms bt Michael Hope 7-5, Karl Sutton bt JakeDylan Newlove 7-4, John Roe bt Jules Goodyear 7-6, Lee Kendall bt Stuart Green 7-2, Andy Cross bt Luke Bowery 7-3, Giuseppe D’Imperio bt Anthony Doble 7-2, Ben Swinnerton bt David Roblin 7-0, Jack Pople bt Matt Brierley 7-5.

“Gav had played well all weekend and beat Keith Brewer in the semis. He got off to a good start but he let me off the hook a couple of times. “It was 5-5 before I managed to get the next three. But we both played ok considering it was so late.”

Last 16: Gifford bt O’Boyle 7-5, Lomax bt Clark 7-5, Brewer bt Church 7-2, Wharne bt Grout 7-2, Sutton bt Toms 7-5, Roe bt Kendall 7-5, D’Imperio bt Cross 7-5, Pople bt Swinnerton 7-3.

Pople outlasted Karl Sutton in the semifinals, winning the 15th and deciding frame. “That was tough as well because we are good mates and share a room on Tour,” he explained.

Quarter-finals: Lomax bt Gifford 7-4, Brewer bt Wharne 7-3, Sutton bt Roe 7-6, Pople bt D’Imperio 7-3.

“But strange as it may seem probably the hardest game, I had was against Matt Brierley in the last 32. I played so well but still only won 7-5.”

Semi-finals: Lomax bt Brewer 8-6, Pople bt Sutton 8-7. Final: Pople bt Lomax 8-5. 38

PREMIER LEAGUE

NEW PREMIER LEAGUE IS JUST CHAMPION Premier League 2012

Pool’s first ever Premier League competition proved a lot more competitive than football’s current equivalent. Unlike Manchester United’s romp to a 20th top flight title, the first ever eight ball pool Premier League went down to the wire. Londoner Ian Ali eventually finished on top courtesy of eight wins and one draw from his 11 matches. However, he was pushed all the way by Lee Kendall, new European champion Keith Brewer and former world junior title holder, Jordan Church. Only one point separated the top four after a season long competition. Getting underway 12 months ahead of schedule, the Premier League provided one of the highlights of the first year of the new UK Pool tour. Kendall was ‘king of the clearances’ with 27, including a magnificent seven consecutive 8ball clearances at Tour One. Russell Burgess finished runner-up with five consecutive clearances. Considering the highest number in any one match is eight, the performance of both players was exceptional. For season 2013, the Premier League will increase to 16 players (from 12) competing for a £14,000 prize fund. The winner will receive £ 3,000 and the lowest ranked player collecting £ 400. Players for this year’s Premier League were selected by virtue of points gained on the previous year’s Main Tour. With an open draw format this gives everyone chance to make one of those top spots and entry into the Premier League.

As an additional prize for the 2013 season, it is planned to televise a new event “Eightball Pool Shoot-Out” which will be screened on Sky Sports as a Christmas special. Further details will follow but organisers can announce that at least the top six from the Premier League will receive one of the 16 places in a ‘winner takes all’ event with £10,000 up for grabs. Every player on the Tour will be able to enter a qualifier to decide some of the other spots available. After the first Premier league fixtures, England skipper Kendall leads the field with six points followed by Chris Gill on five. Nicely placed just behind on four points are: Cory Rees, Ian Duffy, Russell Burgess and John Bowkett Andy Cross leads the most number of 8ball clearances with seven followed by Chris Gill on six who is also the leader of the most consecutive frames with four racks.
