Blackpool once again plays host to the world’s premier eight-ball pool event and I am delighted to welcome you here to the World Pool Championships, which for the first time is proudly sponsored by Barceló Hotels & Resorts, a privately owned Spanish group, managing over 185 hotels across 17 countries and 4 continents. We have hosted this event at the Blackpool Imperial Hotel for the last five years and have developed a long and fruitful relationship with the sport of Pool which is undoubtedly one of the most popular in the country. This year’s event, like those that have gone before, has been organised by the host country’s English Pool Association on behalf of the world governing body, the World Eightball Pool Federation, and I would like to thank both these organisations for their continued commitment and support. HONOURS: Playing in the 2011 WEPF World Championships, qualifying at first attempt. Won a total of 17 matches from start to the finish in the quarterfinals. Along the way beat Rob Chilton and Marc Farnsworth in the last 32 and last 16 respectively. Other honours include Blackpool and Fylde Pool League singles title three times in four years. This is his second attempt at the World Championship.
WHO AM I?: From being a relative unknown, playing my pool in the Blackpool and Fylde League to become a seeded contender at the World Championships is hard to believe. However, I won the Liverpool Open and the IPA UK Amateur Championship title in recent months. So, I am confident going into the tournament, especially as it's held in my adopted home town.

HONOURS: Getting to quarter finals of the Worlds Championships last year and beating double former world champion, Jason Twist, 8-2 in the last 16.
WHO AM I?: After a great run in last year's championships, the aim for 2012 is to bring back the World title to Bristol and the West Country. Alongside my passion for pool, I also work as a security control guard’ for IKEA Bristol. It's a job I thoroughly enjoy with the daily challenges, surprises and last, but not least, the banter with the boys!
I’d describe myself as down to earth, calm and an outgoing personality. I’m married to a beautiful wife with two wonderful children, and when I’m not playing I’m a dedicated family man. The latter tournament provided me with one of my career highlights, beating three-time world champion, Gareth Potts.
Would love to replicate that kind of performance at World Championships and qualify for the television stages. Away from pool, Maverick loves his football; particularly Juventus and Italy.

HONOURS: 2006 European men's singles champion; twice Gangsters Tour champion and World Black Ball semi finalist, 2011 European Men's Team champions. Name: Neil Toms Seed: Seven Date Of Birth: July 13, 1967
My main occupation at present is network marketing but also general building works. Other interests include: football, snooker and American 9-Ball Pool. Regarding the current championships, my aim is to have an outright win in the singles and be a member of the 'SUCCESSFUL' Welsh Team!. Reckoned to be best one handed pool player in the world. Managed seven breaks and finishes playing in this manner. Used to be useful snooker player and made a break of 107 at the age of nine!

WHO AM I?: I have just reached the ripe old age of 50 and I am looking forward to playing in the over 50’s division in the next few years. And I am especially relishing playing in the coming WEPF World Championships in my 10th year as a

Welsh international. Us Welshmen haven’t won the men's world title since 2002 so hoping this year to change that. And while the team event is very important to me I feel very honoured to have a top eight seeded spot at this year’s individual event. The 2012 World 8-Ball Pool Federation Championships promise to be the most open world tournament for a number of years.

It is virtually impossible to nominate a red hot favourite for the men’s singles title though the 20th anniversary of these prestigious championships will see a new name on the trophy.
That’s in part to the absence of some familiar names that have graced the event down the decades. But it’s also due to the strength of the sport, not only in the UK but throughout the globe. In addition to the top eight seeds, there’s scope for another 10 or 12 players to lift the trophy this week.
Australia nearly had their first singles champion in 12 years at the 2011 gathering as Ben Nunan reached the semi-finals. Sadly, Nunan hasn’t travelled with the ‘Green and Golds’ this time.
However, in John “Rusty” Wheeler - making his third appearance on the Fylde CoastAustralia have a player who could become the first winner from Down Under since maverick Quinten Hann in 1999. The Aussies’ formidable squad also includes Mick Delahunty, one of the all-time greats of the game, but still competing at the top of his sport. Closer to home there is

England skipper Lee Kendall, likely to be the only cue man to have featured at every World Championship. The Stoke potter has captured 10 team titles during his long career but unfortunately just missed out on the ‘big one.’ H o w e v e r, h e i s a f o r m e r finalist-losing to Irishman Greg Farren-and even though well into the veteran stage, will be one of the favourites in many peoples’ eyes. Kendall currently tops the UK Tour Premier League standing and with a Tour win under his belt already this season, he is enjoying some of the best form of his life.
England also boast two other major contenders for the title and unlike Kendall (sorry, Lee) they are part of a new wave of potting aces. The first name to look out for is Jack Pople, fresh from his European title success in Dublin earlier this year.
Pople’s list of victims included: former World Masters winner Ben Flack, Thomas Morrow and Malta’s Clint Azzopardi.
The other home grown talent is a name that’s difficult to forget and not that easy to get your tongue round! So step forward Guiseppe D’Imperio. We reckon sooner or later Guiseppe will be world champion, perhaps even this year. Still part of the Under 21’s squad, he is one of the most impressive newcomer the

ntenders game has seen in many years. The new European under 21 champion swept all before him in Dublin defeating Lee Shepherd 7-4 in the final. For good measure he disposed of current World Under 21 champion Ashley Radford in the quarter-finals as well as another star of the future, Ireland’s Adam McMackin, in the semis.
Just for good measure, Guiseppe also won all 18 of his frames in the team event. Indeed, his only defeat in the entire tournament came against Flack in the last eight of the main event.
The Welsh provide two of the top eight seeds in Oly Bale and Russell Burgess. But they also can call on Tom Cousins, keen to make an impact on the biggest stage of them all. Cousins has won several major professional titles and is certainly one to put your money on for the title, it is well within his reach this year.
The highlight of the past year has been the re-emergence of Scotland as a world force. Disappointed by their performances at the European Championships, they have a first class team competing at the Worlds with an array of talent. Martin McIntosh is always a threat when anywhere near his top form and the word is that he is playing really well in domestic pool.
However, the main threat might just come from Pat
M c C a r r o n ; n o s t ra n g e r t o winning events with both the World Junior and World Under 21 world titles to his credit. Aberdonian Pat is National team captain and the news from north of the border is that they are expecting to see him in the TV stages. Previous semi-finalist Rob McKay is another contender very capable of again appearing in the televised stages of the Sky Sports broadcast. Another contender is Northern Ireland’s Nigel Craig who was in the 2009 World team. He returns to this year’s event after a two year absence. And what about the guys from Ireland? Manager Steve Mills is looking to gain his first title since taking charge, and whilst there will be excellent opposition in the championships this year, the England squad, seeded one in the team section are very capable of taking the title in the 4th July final.
Team is full of experienced top level players including the Number one seed Gareth Hibbott and former finalist Lee Kendall the team captain, both of whom are capable of becoming World Individual champion this year. John Roe and Neil Toms and ex world junior champion Jordan Church are seeded players, with a lot of international level games under their belt. Newcomers to the team are Karl Sutton and Graham Berrutto.
With Eight of last year’s squad who reached the final only to lose 8-5 to a very competent Ireland team, England are again looking a formidable team and will be one of the favorites for the title. Chris Gill, Jack Pople and Darren Price have settled into the team, as a new generation comes off the assembly line of top class England players. In fact, Pople proved his maturity by taking the Europeanindividual title in Dublin, and is undoubtedly a world class performer.

They have a very strong team appearing at the championships giving them the experience and stability to be amongst the winners. Maverick Zammit is one of the top eight seeds and is ably supported by several top level experienced campaigners at World and European level. Do not be surprised if Malta are in the final, they are always well capable of taking the title and this year is no exception as they seek to follow on their success with winning the under 21 World Championship Trophy last year.
After a semi-final spot in the 2010 World Championships, the team are now firmly established in the top level of the world rankings. The youth and under 21 policy which was introduced by the country is certainly showing through to the senior ranks and makes Malta one of the favorites for this years championships. Last year was a disappointment for the team, only gaining a quarter final spot, which in most countries be a good result, but Malta expect their team to be in the top four of any event they enter.

Morocco have some outstanding players, and have already made their mark with success at international level events held in France, could make an impact at this years event.
Kenya and Uganda are regulars to the world championships and this year we have Morocco making their bow at the top level of the sport. Hopefully the constant problem with visas will be sorted, to allow these countries their rightful place amongst the worlds elite Pool nations.
South Africa are a major influence in the sport with Jacobus Le Roux as their seeded player. J.J. Faul, based in the U.K. is one of the top players in the sport, ably supported by Dominic Bake and a team gradually developing at international level.
With the return of South Africa to the championships after a two year absence, the continent has four nations at this year’s event.
Nigel Craig, Chris Alexander and Garath Johnston are experienced internationals and with will give that support needed for the newcomers to settle into the national squad.
With the promotion of some of the members from the 2010 World Under 21 Champions into the senior ranks, the squad is now looking like they could be contenders for the latter stages of the championships. The squad is further strengthened by the return of Tommy Donlon, one of the greats of the game and Thomas Morrow a semi-finalist in the recent European Championships who is fast developing into one of the top players in the world.
After three consecutive quarter finals placings, the team is holding its own in the top eight ranked countries of the world. There is a new breed coming into the national squad and the good times are ahead, perhaps this year is just too soon for a major honour, but it is certainly looking good for the future.

Most of the other squad members have been involved with previous World Championships and have performed well at the very top level of the game. Would expect to see Ireland in at least the televised stages, but would not be surprised to see them retain their title in what is looking like the most competitive championships for several years.

The team has not stopped still, with a great win at the recent European Championships in Dublin, Ireland are the form side and are expected to be fighting to retain their title.
Following their brilliant win at last year’s World Championship, Ireland are ranked two in the world and looking to dislodge England from the top spot they have held for many years. Their quarter final spot in 2009 was followed by a semi-final in 2010 and the top prize last year.

It would not be a surprise to see a player from Wales taking the Men’s Individual title this year, such is the depth of talent in the current national setup, definitely a team who expect to continue their current ranked 3rd in International level Pool.
Russell Burgess, Oly Bale and Tom Cousins provide the top class basis for the team but there are plenty of other names in the squad who can match any team in the world. Wayne Smith, Tom Price and Dave Roblin were in last year’s team and with some very good newcomers backing up the main players it is a squad oozing with confidence and ability.
After a very disappointing quarter-final spot at last years worlds, Wales returned to their previously excellent level with a finalist position at the 2012 European Championships. With two previous semi places and 2010 runner-up position, they will be looking for the World title at this years’ championships.

Winner of the recent Belgium Open 2012. Russell finished second in the Welsh team averages for last season, so is showing some good form.

Captain of the men’s team also known as the “Rhino”, Wayne will guarantee some noise and banter during the championships and was seeded number four in the Welsh rankings from last season. Wayne, we like to call “super glue”, he keeps the team well bonded and ensures the squad stick together, whether playing or managing Wayne will sure let some steam off should Wales bring the World title home to after losing in the European final 2012.

Tom finished player of the tournament for Wales at the recent European championships in Ireland and has settled into the team this last year. He won his first PFW Welsh ranking event in 2011 and has won many titles since so again a strong player to have in the squad.

Jon is a great player and well capable of doing some damage at this event. He is very methodical yet clinical in his approach, and will make Wales even stronger this year. Having played for the WPA Welsh team many times he has the experience and knowledge to win titles. Jon got the semi final of the `Masters a few years ago and will be looking to better his performance this year.

Once again Oly joins the team to add to a vibrant side looking for that double title, Oly will bring a rapid finish to most frames and his growing experience will ensure a solid performance from his colleagues. Seeded in to the last 64 of the singles he has a real chance of becoming world champion along with his previous European title. Oly finished third in the Welsh team averages last season.

Another newcomer to the PFW squad who finished top of the Wales “B” team averages at the European championships in Ireland. Paul is a very steady and reliable player who will be hard to beat.

His first time playing for Wales at the World Championships and has come from the Wales “B” team who played in the European Championships. Kyle is a very attacking player with all the shots and will cause a few upsets at this year’s event.

Name: Marc Fleming The last of the 5 players in our squad that have came through the ranks of the SEPF from Junior Level. Marc a current member of the IPA made his debut at the Euros in Dublin and has played his way after some awesome performances into what was a very difficult squad to pick. He is one of three in his family competing at this year's Championships. Younger Brother Ryan will again have a massive chance in the U21 Event after finishing runner up last year. And Dad Jim is back to compete in the Senior's (O50's) Event.

Much improved side, they have got back that fire and enthusiasm that is traditional with any team from Scotland. Martin Mcintosh and Barry Kelly are the backbone of the team and with the return of Scottish legend Mike Clark, they are looking to be one of the top four teams who will appear in front of SKYSPORTS cameras at his years championships.
We said last year that it might take another year before Scotland are again amongst the top ranked countries, and with some new additions to their squad they are indeed looking to be a formidable outfit.
With Mike McDonald as their manager, Scotland are emerging out of the doldrums of recent years and have one of their strongest sides for many seasons. Pat McCarron and Darren Matthew who have both won world titles in other divisions at the World Championships, are the strength of the side but are not in any way the only experienced players available to the new manager. He is a pool club owner in Cumbria and is a consistent winner of event in that area. Pat McCarron Nickname: Patty Like Darren, Patty has been part of our set up since a very early age and is also a multiple World Champion at both Junior and Under 21 Level. Current Scotland Captain and regular in the squad since leaving u21's. Patty must be another contender for the singles this year after narrowly losing out to Gareth Potts in a deciding frame last time around.
Mike Clark One of the most experienced members within our Federation after missing out last year due to work commitments, Mike hopes to be back with avengence. Former Scotland Captain and his commitment to the National Team is unrivaled. One of the best one frame specialists around. He is tha man on form coming into this years event and therefore must be a contender.

Won that also and claimed a very nice first prize.
Darren Mathew Nickname:Daz Daz has been part of the SEPF since he was 12 years old. Three times Junior World Champion and seeded Number 2 at this years event. Recent member of the successful Brittish Lions tours of Australia and Malta. Regular winner of Regional and National Events. Sure to go well in the singles.
Nickname: The Hammer Barry is another who brings vast experience to our squad after competing in numerous World, European and Home International Championships for his country. Lives in Liverpool and is a very well known and feared opponent on the Merseyside circuit. One time World squad member his passion and experience is sure to rub off on the younger members in a squad which we believe is the best that we will have put forward for the last 5 to 10 years.

Along with Mark McGauley he classes himself as one of the pin up boys in the team. Ladies of Blackpool watch out for the "Spice Boys".

It’s been Emma’s misfortune trying to win trophies in an era when Sue Thompson has dominated the ladies scene. But the Newry born star is one of the few capable of toppling the greatest female player of all-time. In 2005, she became the youngest ever recipient of the title, beating Thompson in the final. And while it was a long time between titles, Emma finally triumphed again in the ladies singles final 12 months ago. Unexpectedly, her opponent wasn’t Thompson but Australian Renata Delahunty. And the Northern Ireland cue queen made no mistake and romped to an 8-2 victory after beating Welsh rival, Collette Henriksen, in the semi-finals. Cunningham made her World Championship debut

Some things in life are predictable: a Briton failing to win Wimbledon, England losing a penalty shootout, a Britain's Got Talent winner never being heard of again. But when it comes to Sue Thompson winning the World Ladies singles title, it's pretty much guaranteed. However, the normal order was upset 12 months ago. The Runcorn born left hander not only relinquished her title but she didn't even make the final. Instead, Blackpool was rocking as Thompson crashed to a 7-5 quarter-final defeat against Sharon Dickson. And if that wasn't bad enough, the 'Queen of the Cue' slumped to a last eight defeat in the World Masters against Renata Delahunty. The hangover from Blackpool continued into the new Ladies International Pool Tour season as Thompson slipped to a last 16 defeat in Tour One against Amy

Barbara has been a World Championship regular for more years than she probably cares to remember! And the tournament has provided plenty of high and low spots. Indeed, she suffered the contrasting emotions in the same match. The occasion was the 2008 ladies singles final. Delight at qualifying for her first individual showpiece turned into disappointment as local star Lynette Horsburgh waltzed off with the spoils. The Kent stalwart also progressed to a last two shootout of the 2010 World Masters only to lose 64 to Michelle Brown. Barbara, however, as numerous world titles to her name as one of the pillars of the all-conquering England ladies team. One of those successes came 12 months ago as she sank the winning 8-Ball against Natalie Madden to secure England's 7-6 win over Northern Ireland.

back in 2003 when remarkably she reached the last four. In 2004, she progressed to the final but couldn’t stop Thompson lifting the trophy. Despite Thompson’s dominance, Cunningham is only one of four girls to have won the ladies world title since 1993. In addition to her World 8-Ball Singles crown, Cunningham also collected another world title in Blackpool last year. She defeated Emma Wilkinson 8-2 to capture the World Masters, ironically after getting the better of Delahunty again in the semi-finals. Sadly, Cunningham’s talents haven’t been on display on the Ladies International Pool Tour and it remains to be seen whether a lack of match practice proves her undoing at the Imperial. Sister Mary is also a useful pool player.

In five matches she dropped only six frames-two in the final when beating fourth seed Michelle Rooney 7-2. Sue, now living on Humberside, has been winning world crowns since 1996. She arrives in Blackpool as top ranked player on the Tour with a 26 points lead over second ranked, Collette Henriksen. In total, Thompson has won 10 world singles titles. A measure of her achievement can be gauged by looking at the history books. The only player to come close to Thompson's record is Linda Leadbitter with four titles while Emma Cunningham, of the current crop of players, is the only one with more than one to her name.

Also seeded three for last year's individual championships, 'Babs' lost 7-6 in the quarters to Renata Delahunty. 'Babs' is seventh on the provisional Ladies Tour rankings, down by just one place on her 2011 finishing position. She has reached the quarter-finals of both the opening two Tours, including the last event at Leicester, resulting in a 6-4 defeat to Michelle Rooney. However, she overcame her last eight hoodoo by winning last year's Champion of Champions ladies singles title. She knocked out: Katie Henrick, Liesa Conlin and Anne Rocca before beating Lynne Pinches 6-4 in the final. And it's a good bet she will be at the business end of the Championships once more this year.

Renata took the Worlds by storm last year by reaching the ladies' singles final. In doing so she became only the second Australian female to progress that far after Natalie Froling 18 years earlier. However, the 42-year-old from Adelaide suffered the same fate as Froling against Linda Leadbitter in 1993, losing to Ulster favourite Emma Cunningham. But she certainly left her mark on the tournament defeating: Anne Meadows,Kolbe Poole, Catherine Buckley, Barbara Taylor and Sharon Dickson. Renata, wife of top Aussie men's star, Mick, also got through to the last four of the World Masters, in

cluding victory over Sue Thompson, to complete a memorable 10 days.
Renata was Australian National singles champion in 2009. She also reached the final again last year but lost out 9-6 to another familiar Blackpool face, Sue Bussanich. Renata is seeded in the top four for the first time in what will be her sixth World Championship. She is also captain of the women's squad.

No one begrudged Emma Cunningham her first World ladies singles title in six years when she beat Renata Delahunty in the 2011 final.
Cunningham seemed to suffer almost annually at the cue of Sue Thompson. But patience is a virtue and the Northern Ireland international had her reward over Australian Renata Delahunty. Thompson has dominated the ladies scene in the same way darts legend Phil Taylor mastered his rivals on the Oche. At the last count, the former Scottish international had amassed 10 singles titles. But favourites can be beaten as was proved 12 months ago. In fact, the ladies tournament took on a new dimension 12 months ago as Delahunty put h e r n a m e i n t h e f ra m e f o r honours.

The moral of the story is there is ‘always hope’. And it is great to see the rise of the Aussies who travel from the other side of the world every year to compete in the greatest 8-Ball event on the planet.
And there is plenty of girl power attached coming from Down Under. In addition to Renata, Sue Bussanich and Nicole Welsh are two others who have started to put their stamp on the top level of ladies pool. The Aussie ladies won the World team title in 2007 followed by a semi-final spot last year. So, will we see one of them lift the individual title at the 2012 Worlds? However, there is another bright star emerging in the Northern Hemisphere and her name is Amy Beauchamp. ‘Our’ Amy is the new European singles champion courtesy of a

nt ender s 7-3 victory over England skipper Jackie Baker. She also enjoyed an equally impressive semi win against Collette Henriksen.
semi-finals and could just be the next one to show her skills to the Sky Sports viewers in the televised final.
Baker is another World Championship stalwart; a winner of 10 team titles, European champion herself in 2004 and runner-up three years earlier.
Let’s not forget Scotland's and Blackpool’s very own, Lynette Horsburgh, who took the title in 2008 and has regularly been among the top four seeds.
She has played County pool for Kent and London, has probably never done herself justice in the World Singles. But she always has the capability to test the leading contenders and maybe this will be finally Baker’s year.
The ‘Pocket Rocket’ is now starting to get back to her brilliant best while former European ladies champion, Sharon Dickson of Wales, went all the way to the semis in last year’s Worlds. She is another who has experience and the ability.
Maybe there is a power shift at the top of the game? Henriksen, Baker and Northern Ireland’s Michelle Rooney along with Delahunty - are joint fourth seeds. However, Renata claims fourth because of her final spot last year. Emma Cunningham and Sue Thompson are indeed the top stars of the ladies game. But without doubt there are others who are now showing that they are capable of taking the title. Henriksen, nicknamed the ‘Smiling Assassin’, has appeared in two of the last three world
England have traditionally been strong in the ladies’ individual and have new blood in their team for this year’s event. However, eighth seed Carly Smith, is still in the squad to provide that extra experience to the newcomers. Kim O’Brien and Catherine Buckley are the Irish ladies’ seeded players, both of whom have reached the latter stages of previous championships. So, watch out Emma and Sue-the contenders are coming to get you!
