Roe

Lives: Yaxley, Peterborough Nickname: Roey

John Roe returns to Blackpool carrying extra pressure as defending champion. The Peterborough cueman and England international upset the form book 12 months with his final win over friend and roommate, Lee Kendall. Now, he's back to try and retain his men's singles crown; a feat that has rarely been achieved. Roe, a recent Challenge Tour winner over Craig Waddingham, admits he's not sure what to expect this time. "I'm looking forward to Blackpool but I am not hold-

ing up my hopes too high," he claims. "I feel a lot more pressure this time because a lot more people expect you to do well," added Roe who was unseeded 12 months ago. "I've got so much more to lose this year rather than trying to win something last time. "But I've enjoyed being world champion. You get more recognition from it and more people know who you are on the pool circuit. "However, you are also expected to do amazing things and really I am just a normal person."

Cousins

Second seed Tom Cousins has been putting in the hours on his practice table to get ready for the Worlds. Having recently moved back to Norfolk from Hereford, Tom has been absorbed with his house move. But the dad of one remains optimistic he can live up to his lofty status once he arrives at Blackpool. "I haven't really picked up my cue since I got back from the last Tour," he explained. "So my form is non existent at the moment. But I still believe I can do well even if my form at the

Kendall

Lee Kendall came so close last year to fulfilling his pool career ambition of winning the world singles title. But sadly for the long-serving England skipper he came up just short after a cracking match against John Roe. However, he's back for another shot at the trophy. And despite recent health issues that have curtailed his practice, Kendall is optimistic of another extended run. "It will be interesting to see how I play," said Arsenal fan Kendall.

Name: Tom Age: 24

Price

A semi-finalist in 2012, window cleaner Price is looking to move two rungs up the ladder this year. Indeed, it would be a fantastic 25th birthday celebration for the Newport born cueman if he lifts the trophy during the tournament. "It's my birthday on the last day of the Championships," he explains. "So, it would be fantastic if I won it. "I know I am capable of doing it. "Last year I beat probably the best player (Tom Cousins) and lost to someone I should have beaten. (John Roe)

Worlds hasn't always been the best. "I wouldn't say anyone can win the title. I reckon the top eight seeds and one or two more. "And if I was going to put money on it, I'd say Craig Waddingham is the man to beat. On his day, he is awesome." Tom was a quarter-finalist 12 months ago, losing eventually 9-7 to Tom Price. Cousins is currently ranked fourth on the UK Tour but lost 7-5 to Paul Riley in the last 64 of the last Tour.

Lives: Stoke On Trent Nickname: The Fox

"I've not been playing that badly. It's just I haven't practiced as much as I would normally have done at this stage. "But I definitely still think I can win the title. "John will be there or thereabouts again. But as it's been proved in the past, it's always harder to go back and defend it." Kendall is ninth on the UK Tour rankings after three events this season. But at the time of going to press, he topped the Premier League table with eight wins from nine outings.

Lives: Cheltenham Nickname: Pricey

"In the end I let the occasion get the better of me. I could hardly pot a ball," he admits of his 10-4 defeat. "Hopefully, if I get to that stage again, I will know what to expect and do a lot better." Price also reached the last four of the 2013 European Championships before losing 7-2 against Giuseppe D'Imperio. Price is a lowly 41st on the current UK Tour rankings but a far better player than that position suggests. Marc Fleming of Scotland halted his progress in the last 32 of the previous Tour.

D’Imperio

Lives: Twickenham Nickname: G-Force

Twelve months ago, D'Imperio was on cue to become one of the youngest world champions ever. He reached the semi-finals, playing some outstanding pool before coming up against one of pool's most experienced exponents. And Lee Kendall used all his craft and know how to carve out a 10-5 victory. However, D'Imperio is fancied in many quarters to go all the way this year. He finished runner-up to Keith Brewer at the European Championships and recently reached the semi-finals of the UK Tour, losing 8-7 to Mark White.

D'Imperio, a former accountancy student, is second on the UK Tour rankings behind Tour three winner, Ben Flack. In 2009, he was runner-up in the World Juniors. "Winning the world title would mean everything," he said. "It's the most prestigious event we play in and it's the one everyone wants to win. "Hopefully, I have got every chance. Maybe the fact I was playing on television for the first time last year didn't help. "If that happens again I am sure I will handle it differently."

Waddingham

Craig Waddingham gave a startling performance at the WEPF World Championships of three years ago. The dad of one came from out of the blue to almost snatch the title. In total, Waddingham won 11 matches, including four qualifying for the final stages at Hinckley, before losing 10-5 to Gareth Potts in the semi-finals. Now, he's back at Blackpool as a seed and determined to build on that remarkable performance. "I'd like to go two matches better this time," said the betting shop worker. "And starting from a seeded position will also hopefully help me.

Name: Karl Age: 23

O’Donoghue

O'Donoghue has been an annual visitor to Blackpool with the Irish squad for a number of years now. Last year he enjoyed his best ever individual results reaching the quarter-finals before a 9-5 defeat against Giuseppe D'Imperio. En route to the last eight he also put out local Blackpool favourite Lee Anderson and reigning European champion, Keith Brewer. O'Donoghue, a barman in Laytown, returns to the Fylde Coast in decent nick. Seeded four, he reached the final of the recent Irish Pool Championships. And that was no mean feat as the event attracted a

Name: Avtar Age: 35

Not one to lack confidence, Singh is hopeful of a best ever showing at the WEPF World Championships. "I know if I play to my potential I have got a really good chance," he confirmed. "But I think the Championships are wide open. I believe as many as 20 players have a major chance. "However, if I was to narrow it down, my money would be on Giuseppe D'Imperio. He is a fantastic player." Singh, at least, has one trophy to his name when he

"I just took it game by game last time, had a bit of rub and things fell into place. "To be honest, I haven't practiced too much recently because of work. But I will get it done before Blackpool." Waddingham, proud father of Kye, wouldn't mind some extra cash. "My girlfriend, Erica, is expecting our second on July 27 so the winners' cheque would come in handy. "She'll be coming over to support me and at least if she goes into labour early, the hospital is just round the corner."

record entry of 265 players, showing the depth of the Irish game. O'Donoghue put out top seed, Sean Hoey, in the semi-finals before losing 10-6 in the final against John Columb. "I am playing well and I am confident my game has improved from last year," he says. "These days the World Championship is wide open and everyone believes they have a chance of winning. "I'd like to think I can include myself in that number."

cues up this week. Victory over Partab Singh gave him victory in the Bristol Pool League singles final. "I've been trying for a few years to win it so I was really pleased," he added. Previous champions include Ben Flack, a winner of the last UK Tour event. In contrast, Singh suffered a 7-5 defeat to Lee Grout in the last 128 but aims for better fortune at the Worlds. When he's not involved in pool Singh works in the security business.

Other Cham con DUCKS IN A ROE-LINING UP FOR SHOT AT CHAMPION

The introduction to this feature last season suggested the 2012 event would be the most open championships for years and a year later there is every reason to believe the 2013 version is equally tough to call.

Keith Brewer

Peterborough’s John Roe came out of virtually nowhere to lift the trophy and who is to say there won’t be a repeat. Certainly the split in the game after the 2011 Worlds ensures it’s tough to call a winner but there is positive news for the future with former World Champion Phil Harrison returning for next year’s World Championships.

The Cambridgeshire window cleaner is having to sit out a year after giving up his professional status and will be back in 2014 shooting for the top prize.

Marc Fleming

Ben Flack

Ameur Abdelati Riad

So, who will be in contention? How about Keith Brewer, former singles runner-up, ex England captain and now a major player on the over 50’s circuit of which he is the current World Champion. Just for good measure the Poole based star is also the reigning European champion having seen off rivals half of his age at Blackpool earlier this year. Brewer’s win over Giuseppe D’Imperio came 14 years after his previous Euro. crown, Keith seems to be getting better with age.

The world title is the one major prize missing from his collection and the “Brew” could definitely come to the boil in Blackpool. With the rapid growth of the World Rules game in Europe, there are several players in contention for the “World Crown”. Scotland have emerged as a major force in the sport and Pat McCarron European semi-finalist is joined by Marc Fleming and Rob Warrander the national seeds amongst the many who may be around when the trophies are handed out.

And sooner or later we are going to see 3 times former World junior champion Darren Matthew take his place in the worlds elite. Former World Master Ben Flack of England is another who has given up his professional status and is again eligible to compete in the World Championships, he is also leading the rankings on the UK tour. Let’s not forget the current World Master Jack Pople, a former European winner who could be about to move up a gear and take the World title. 12

pionship

ntenders Russell Burgess is another in a fine vein of form and very capable of having a say in the destination of the title, Wales already have Tom Price and Tom Cousins in the top 4 seeds of this years championships. The team from India have some top class players including seeded Hiten Patel and another ex-professional Partab Singh amongst others who could be involved in the televised stages. Malta have former European champion Clayton Attard in their ranks and have a very strong team in the championships of which at least 5 are capable of challenging for the title including Johan Attard, Ray Caruana and Kevin Mercieca their other seeded players.

And an overseas victory is long overdue. Australian Quinten Hann was the last winner from outside the UK or Ireland to take the trophy home in 1998. Ben Nunan reached the semi-finals in 2011 but is one of their big guns not making the trip, the poor dollar to pound exchange rate for Australians coming to Britain has resulted in a number of leading players staying at home.

However it would be foolish to write off the men from Down Under and you can bet that their squad aren’t travelling halfway round the world just to make up the numbers. Such is the cosmopolitan nature of the championships this year we just might get a surprise from one of the African contingent. They have plenty of top level players with South Africa’s J.J. Faul their seeded player who is currently based in the UK and gaining experience on the main tour, very capable of causing a few surprises at this years event.

Players from Kenya, Moroco and even Reunion Island will be very much an unknown quantity at the Championships. Reunion is a French speaking island in the Indian Ocean with a population of around 800,000. It’s a long way to come for a game of pool but their representatives are more than welcome. The Moroccans are less of an unknown quantity and are becoming regular visitors, Ameur Abdelati Riad impressed everyone at last years worlds before losing 8-4 in the last 16 to Giuseppe D’Imperio.

It promises to be a fascinating 11 days of competition with an element of surprise guaranteed at every turn. Place your bets on the identity of the new champion.

Current European champions Team Malta will be looking to flourish this year’s success by winning the world title for the first time. Finalists in 2006 Malta are fielding experienced players that won the European Title 3 times in 2002, 2008 and 2013. Clayton Attard, European Singles Champion in 2011, will be leading the Maltese team together with the highly experienced Anton Cuschieri nicknamed big Tony. European team members’ winners Mario Cutajar, Ray Caruana and Johan Attard together with Mario Brincat, Christ Tabone and debutant Jason Mifsud will offer great challenge for the title.

If the team reach the televised stages which are played on the bigger table, they will take some beating.

The team has 4 players in the last 64 of the World Singles and great things are expected in both the team and the singles events.

This is the strongest Indian team for many a year. A mixture of youth and experience. Although the team has yet to reach the televised stages of this event, India are confident that the current team have the ability to reach the final stages this year.

Australia travel to this year’s world titles with its most inexperienced side it has sent. But what it lacks in experience it makes up for in enthusiasm. Marcus Jackson will captain this year’s team and will be assisted by vice-captain Barry Kitchener. These two players will be the only players to have played on the big stage at the world titles and a lot will be expected from these two to lead from the front. There are a couple of excitement machines in this year’s team so expect big things from the Big Unit Dax Wasley, who always sports a stand out hair style to match his ability on the table. Kris Jones and Anthony Chia also have great A games and will be crowd pleaser's. Ian Chung, Dene Heremaia and Phil Thorp make up the squad and all 3 have been very successful at Australian Titles over several years and are looking forward to testing themselves at World level. Manager is again Damien Smith who will once more be looking to securing a finals spot and go further than last year’s Elimination Semi Final. You can never discount Australia whoever they send to the titles they are here to win and try and bring another teams title back to Australia.

Expect some fireworks during this year’s world championships, with many additions to the ranks in all the categories Wales will be looking to make their mark and get back to the their top 3 Position in the world. A squad rebuilding mission is well under way in the Men’s and Ladies teams with many new players keen to show their talents off.

TOM PRICE RUSSELL BURGESS KYLE EDWARDS WAYNE SMITH PAUL HAWKINS COLM EVANS ANDREW HUGHES DANNY GARSTON DAVE HUGHES

A player to be feared after reaching both semi finals of the 2012 World and European championships. Quite simply an amazing player who can beat anyone on his day. A great team performer as well after finishing top of the welsh rankings in 2012 / 2013 season.

Tom Price

retained his place in the 2013 squad with some solid performances over the season and finished 3rd in the overall rankings to gain a seeded spot in this year’s singles championships.

Kyle Edwards

Having just won the Belgium open for the 2nd year running and the top of the European averages this year Russell is certainly “on-Form” and could be one to watch for this year’s singles title. One of the PFW’s longest serving squad players, experience is Russell’s strong point and he is sure to make a significant contribution to this year’s team effort.

Russell Burgess

Captain of the men’s team and also known as the “rhino”, Wayne will guarantee some noise and banter during the championships. Wayne we like to call “super glue”, he keeps the team well bonded and ensures the squad stick together, whether playing or managing Wayne will sure let some steam off should Wales bring the World title home to go with their European championship title for 2011.

Wayne Smith

Like Darren, Patty has been part of our set up since a very early age and is also a multiple World Champion at both Junior and Under 21 Level. Current Scotland Captain and regular in the squad since leaving u21's. Patty must be another contender for the singles this year after a good run at the Euros. Tom Price...... Has excelled again this year and Wales are proud of his achievements. Tom won his first PFW men's tour in 2011 and also made the PFW squad in the same year. He was part of the PFW team that narrowly lost to Ireland in the European Championships final by 8 - 7 and in doing so was the Welsh player of the tournament. Tom has great ability and can beat anyone on his day. Tom also reached the SKY SPORTS televised stages of the 2012 World Singles in Blackpool and lost to the eventual winner, look out Tom Price is back to have another go at the title this year.

Another player who came through this year’s trials to earn a spot in the world team. One of the most solid players you will meet, and a match for any player on his day.

Having missed out on the Team event due to our stringent qualification process Marc will be competing in both The World Singles and The World Masters. He will be a serious threat to all if bringing his 'A' game to Blackpool especially if he can make it through to the televised stages on the bigger table.

Marc Davis

The last of the 4 players in our squad that have came through the ranks of the SEPF from Junior Level. Marc is currently number 1 seed on our International Ranking list and the level of consistency he has shown over the last few years since stepping up from the under 21's is quite remarkable. Fearless at the table and possesses unbelievable natural talent.

Marc Fleming

This will be Mark's Second vist to The Worlds after finishing joint top of the rankings at the Euros. Mark's commitment over the last year is incredible. 2012 Ladies World 8 Ball Pool Champion

Sue Thompson 22

Ladies Seeds for the World Championships 2013 Name: Emma Seed: One

Cunningham

Emma Cunningham is back as top seed for 2013 despite suffering her worst ever performance at last season’s World Championships. The Northern Ireland born cue queen was again expected to challenge for a title she's won on two occasions. Instead, Cunningham came a cropper in the last 32, beaten 6-5 by Sharon Wright. However, defeat was no disgrace as Wright reached the final before succumbing to Sue Thompson. And most girls have come off second best against Thompson.... until this year. The defending champion announced her retirement after lifting the trophy in 2012, giving Cunningham and others a belief, it may be their year. Indeed, it's been Cunningham’s misfortune trying to win trophies in an era when Thompson has dominated.

Name: Barbara Seed: Two

Taylor

Barbara Taylor is on the rise; certainly in the WEPF World Championship rankings. One of eight ball pool's most durable and engaging characters, the long-serving England international is seeded two this year, a jump of one position on 2012. Taylor reached the last 16 12 months ago but was disappointed by her eventual 6-2 exit against English rival, Emma Wilkinson. However, Wilkinson is a fine player as she demonstrated by securing a first ever European singles title earlier this year. Taylor is a previous European champion and also runner-up to friend and former England captain, Jackie Baker. But this year's event wasn't her finest hour, beaten in the preliminary round by experienced Welsh rival, Collette Henriksen. However, she did get her hands on a trophy as a member of England's victorious ladies squad.

Name: Jackie Seed: Three

Baker

Lives: Milton Keynes Nickname: Emz, Wookie

But the Newry raised star has proved a match for the former Scottish international. In 2005, she became the youngest ever recipient of the title, beating Thompson in the final. And while it was a long time between titles, Cunningham finally triumphed again in the ladies singles final of 2011, beating Australian Renata Delahunty 8-2. Cunningham made her World Championship debut back in 2003 when remarkably she reached the last four. In 2004, she progressed to the final but couldn’t stop Thompson lifting the trophy. Despite Thompson’s dominance, Cunningham is only one of four girls to have won the ladies world title since 1993. In addition to her World 8-Ball Singles crowns, Cunningham is also a former winner of the the World Masters. Sister Mary is also a useful pool player and has represented Northern Ireland.

Lives: Rainham, Kent Nickname: Babs

Taylor has been a World Championship regular for more years than she probably cares to remember! And the tournament has provided plenty of highs and lows. Indeed, she suffered the contrasting emotions in the same match. The occasion was the 2008 ladies singles final. Delight at qualifying for her first individual showpiece turned into disappointment as local star Lynette Horsburgh waltzed off with the spoils. The Kent stalwart also progressed to a last two shootout of the 2010 World Masters only to lose 6-4 to Michelle Brown. However, Barbara has numerous world titles to her name as one of the pillars of the all-conquering England ladies team. And it's a good bet she will be at the business end of the Championships once more this year. Other titles on her CV include 2005 Home Internationals and 2002 and 2006 National Ladies singles.

Lives: Gravesend Nickname: Betty Boop

Jackie Baker admits her 17th successive World Championship appearance will provide mixed emotions. It's the first time in nearly two decades the Kent based cueist won't be taking part in the ladies team championship after announcing her international retirement earlier this year. “I didn’t intend playing at the Worlds,” she explained. “But when I found out I was seeded, I couldn’t really turn down the chance. After winning the team title on 11 occasions, many of them as captain, Baker admits it will feel strange competing as an individual.

"Most girls will tell you the most important thing is the team and anything that happens in the singles is a bonus," she explained. "So, it will be sad in that way I won't be part of it again. "But I am looking forward to just playing singles with the pressure off." Baker has yet to get beyond the quarter-finals despite her outstanding team record. However, Baker and the rest are boosted by Sue Thompson's absence. "It will certainly open it up for the rest of us because she has dominated. "In fact, I think it's going to be open championships for a long time."

Name: Lynette Seed: Four

Country: Blackpool Nickname: Spinney

Horsburgh

Lynette is one of only two girls in the field to have been crowned world champion. And she’s also back in her home town as a seed for 2013. So, will it be ‘Spinney’s year again as it was in 2008? Despite now only competing in local events since becoming a mum two years ago, Horsburgh is still a force to be reckoned with. In fact, last year she came within a couple of wins of two major titles, losing 7-5 to Sharon Wright in the World Championship and 6-5 in the World Masters final to Sue Thompson.

23

Thompson later described their match as the highest standard game of her career. Juggling family and working life - Horsburgh is a BBC journalist - she made an early exit from this year's European Championships but beaten by winner, Emma Wilkinson. The Scottish international also finished top of the team averages. Horsburgh currently mixes practice with doing joint pool exhibitions with partner Karl Boyes and as a result misses this year’s World Masters because of a prior engagement. And her tip for the title:”Emma Wilkinson is a very exciting prospect and looks like filling her boots,” she predicts.

NAME ON TH

NO THOMPSON THROWS LA Nicole Fielding (Australia)

So, there’s one very familiar face missing from the 2013 World 8Ball Pool Championships - that of last years ladies singles winner, Sue Thompson.

‘Super Sue’ said a teary farewell to the sport after last season’s 8-3 Blackpool triumph over first time finalist, Sharon Wright. Victory brought Thompson an astonishing 11th singles crown.

Emma Wilkinson (England)

A long-standing back complaint was the chief cause of her decision to quit the sport and one she hasn’t reversed during the intervening 12 months.

So, Thompson’s trophy is up for grabs. Elsewhere in this programme, the top four seeds have been highlighted and it wouldn’t be stretching the imagination to suggest the winner will come from that quartet.

Laura Pearce (Wales)

However, this year’s tournament is the hardest one to predict since the event began in Manchester more than two decades ago.

The sad demise of the UK Ladies Tour after last season’s final event means one of the form guides has been removed. It’s certainly ironic that Thomp-

Kim O’Brien (Ireland)

son, who dominated the Tour as she dominated the World Championship, quits and the Tour folds behind her.

So, who is going to emerge from the shadows to threaten the top four?

Sadly, two Blackpool regulars and two leading seeds, Rachel Tucker and Carly Smith are missing this year for personal reasons.

However, Welsh hope Laura Pearce is most certainly in town and looking to build on her encouraging performances of the past two seasons. Unfortunately for Pearce, she’s been handed a really tough opening draw. Her opponent Emma Wilkinson is the reigning European champion, beating Emma Cunningham in the process. "I'm looking at the future now, and I’ve taken my first step by winning the Europeans,” she said after her Euro success over Michelle Rooney. “The next step is to win the Worlds.” Blackpool beware!

Wilkinson from Sunderland cued her way to the world quarters in 2012 before losing to former world champion, Lynette

Certainly, there are plenty of girls who could make out a case for winning. Sharon Wright toppled the likes of Kim O’Brien, Australian Suzanne Bussanich and Lynette Horsburgh last year before tripping up against Thompson.

Collette Henriksen, nicknamed the ‘Smiling Assassin ‘and Sharon Dickson are former semifinalists with Dickson also capturing the World Masters.

first ever Ladies Day at the Crucible back in April.

The Aussie girls are something of an unknown quantity at this year’s championship and that might just prove to their advantage. Rarely do you find a bad Aussie sportsman or woman so watchout for the likes of Sue Coulthard, Christina Sarmento and Nicole Fielding!

Other hopefuls include Michelle Rooney, seeded 12 and representing Northern Ireland. Rooney collected ranking points in 2010 and 2011 so shouldn’t be discounted.

ADVERT

Henriksen enjoyed an excellent run to the European Championship quarter-finals earlier this year. She knocked out England pair, Barbara Taylor and Jackie Baker, both seeded for the World Championship, before losing to another seed, Emma Cunningham.

Number nine seed and Ireland’s O’Brien rarely has a bad game. She was European champion three years ago at the expense of Carly Smith. And what about former ladies snooker star, Katie Henrick, for a shot at the title?

Henrick from Kent hasn’t forgotten her large table roots and gave coaching lessons during the World Snooker Championship’s

Sharon Dickson (Wales)

Sharon Wright (England)

She showed her ability by reaching the European final only to lose to in-form Wilkinson. Susan Collins is another looking to replicate her Euro form.

The Scottish star reached the last four, dropping just two frames between the last 32 and the semis before coming unstuck against Rooney.

Collette Henriksen (Wales)

It promises to be a fascinating tournament so who is your money on?
