bATUL FOUNDER BUDDHA TO BUDDHA

But it has to be a revolution of

I have the honour to introduce to all of you our new size magazine. We have been a bit shy the last years with our square shaped catalogue. The content grew passionately but our new size gives our handmade gift a bit more room for play. As I am proud of the team that creates our new paper jewel we always look for a subject that attracts not only the eye but also the soul of our dear readers. The theme ‘CONSCIOUSNESS’ is not that difficult to write about since I am only a few days back home from beloved Bali. Give me a bit of nature and my mind slows down, my body takes a week to arrive but after that the surf of creativity flows in as easy as the wheatgrass shots in the morning. This trip I could bring my new Buddha to Buddha Aquatic Explorer watch and test if the waterproof promise we made, was done in truth. Please check it out yourself, including the Mindstate Ring in the watch itself. For me it works... We are happy to share with you that we went over to Bali to make a short video clip about how our silver handmade friends are created. When I take people for a small tour through our atelier they leave this creative paradise speechless. Our silversmiths are wizards with their hands and we are very excited to share this online with you. Yes, now you will understand what it takes to make a piece like what you are or maybe will someday be wearing.

My love and passion for meditation and anything that has to do with consciousness is a way of life we can practice at Buddha to Buddha. The 50 kids that we support together with the Bali Children Foundation was a huge Christmas present for me. There are many parts of Indonesia where kids and families have difficulty finishing their first steps at school. Bali Children supports them with good education, afterschool Balinese dance and/or pencak silat (type of Indonesitan martial arts). Staying connected and not becoming a dropout of school is a specialty of the foundation of founder, Margareth Barry, in the north of Bali. You, as a customer, can support this too with taking a closer look at the small collection we created especially for this cause. Starting 2014, every second week I will share on Facebook a short one minute meditation. Have a look, play with it and.... also join in and practice. You can even win a half day meditation workshop for yourself together with me. That is a good kick-off for a magazine about consciousness... Of course you can see our newest play thing also online on our website. Batul Loomans.

TIME TO EMBRACE In the same manner that the traditional silversmiths who create our silver pieces by hand pride themselves on preciseness, we were determined that our premier Buddha to Buddha Watch Collection would also echo this level of supreme detail. Our two collections, named: ‘Aquatic Explorer’ and ‘Accelerator’ consist of Swiss Made robust watches for men and women made with the highest level of craftsmanship. Inspired by the enigmatic ocean and our love of change and the eternal movement that surrounds us all, they perfectly embody our free-spirited brand philosophy. This believe encompasses living consciously in the moment and fulfilling the possibilities of enjoyment. With this in mind we bring you a range of iconic watches designed to give you years of outstanding timekeeping performance.

ACCELERATOR - TACHYMETER | All models in this category are designed with the purest adrenaline seekers in mind, and have a fine balance between functionality and care-free wearing. The precise time-keeping and Tachymeter gives this part of the collection an unmistakeable identity of speed and adrenaline.

AQUATIC EXPLORER - MINDSTATE RING | The Buddha to Buddha ‘Mindstate Ring’ is a never before seen feature in the world of watches and changes the way we perceive the passing of time, reminding us to treasure each given moment. Our Aquatic Explorer watches feature emotive suggestions from us on how to spend your quality time: enjoy - embrace life - live your dreams - moment of silence- meet friends. By turning the Mindstate Ring with one of these inspiring words to a certain time of the day, you become acutely more aware of time in a positive way when the moment arrives, and set off a reaction that hopefully enriches your day-to-day experiences by that something special we call ‘mindfulness’.

“Showing up in the office, being totally refreshed and wearing comfortable shorts and flip flops.” Buddha to Buddha would not be what it is today without the passion of so many people living the brand. Each season we put the spotlight on one of them. This issue is about our man in the US, Frido van Mossel, who drives the brand forward with relentless energy, knowledge and - above all - consciousness of what we stand for. things, especially of the present moment. This definitely plays an im-

ness; being aware that you are in a certain situation, and realizing

already that that situation will change sooner or later.

After four years working in midtown Manhattan and residing in Soho I was indeed done with all the madness that comes with living in the city that never sleeps. Don’t get me wrong, I still love NYC, it’s a great city, but personally I had the need to move to a nice warm place with beautiful beaches, clear blue water and much more space. So in 2011 I relocated the company to sunshine state Florida, and have been enjoying its tranquility ever since. Now after three years in Florida I must admit that I do miss the urban life a little, but thankfully work requires me to travel a lot (for tradeshows for example) to cities like Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago and New York and I do enjoy my trips home to Amsterdam. I guess that once you get used to a traveling existence, you get a bit unresty. If I’m home for too long I have the need to travel. But then after some intensive traveling I truly enjoy coming home again to sunny Florida to go boating and waterskiing in the weekend and showing up in the office the Monday after, being totally refreshed and wearing comfortable shorts and flip flops.

I think it’s beautiful that life is a journey in which we go through different phases. In the one phase you really enjoy living in the most vibrant place ever and in the next phase you truly enjoy a more relaxed environment. The same applies of course to many other aspects in life. I’m happy with where this journey brought me so far and am really looking forward to what the future will bring. I’m conscious that there will be many changes, but always mindful and always with that timeless Batul 2cm around my wrist. Frido van Mossel

Buddha to Buddha pieces are all designed in Amsterdam and handmade by the finest silversmiths on Bali. Having worked on this beautiful island since our conception, the brand has a deep-rooted connection with the island’s people and culture. To ensure that we give back and invest in the future of the Balinese community we work with so closely, Buddha to Buddha has started a project with Margaret Barry’s Bali Children Foundation. The Bali Children Foundation’s (BCF) focus is to educate poor and remote children on Bali, with an initial aim to overcome the very high school dropout rates in rural communities at the end of Elementary school. The communities Buddha to Buddha supports include 4 villages with 57 students under scholarship. This group of villages is in rural Northern Bali, several are hard to get to, often in mountainous areas, close to the Lovina township. To assist parents keeping children at school, BCF scholarships provide school fees, school uniforms, school shoes and bags, books, stationery and a hygiene kit. The December month is a hectic month. The last month of the year often requires self-reflection and let us think about our new year resolutions. For me it was a month marked by a lot of changes and so I decided to do all of the thinking during a 7-day yoga and surf retreat in Morocco.

44.

‘Banana Village’ sounds like party’s with after party’s, trendy clubs and a lot of happy hours, but once arrived in the small fishing village of Taghazout an oasis of tranquility surprised me. A huge villa with Moroccan rugs covered all floors, the sound of thundering waves nearby and the warm scent of herbal tea welcomed me when I arrived in the evening. I also met the other 12 residents of this retreat – a great mix of lovely personalities with different backgrounds. My schedule each day included two hours of meditation & yoga early morning, followed by a hearty and healthy breakfast, before the surf instructors turned up and took the group surfing to the various spots in the area. We returned mid-afternoon, salty, sandy, windswept and sun baked ready for another two-hour session of yoga early evening. ‘Doing as much or as little as you want’ was pressed on our hearts by our hosts, which made the schedule feel slightly lighter. After all the activities we were then rewarded by an amazing Moroccan inspired vegetarian feast.

Exploring the ocean on a board and approaching the waves was a totally new experience to me. The instructors were incredibly patient and always full of praise when you finally caught that wave and stood up. The days flew by and I noticed that this holiday really changed my mindset. I’d never been particularly into yoga before I went to this retreat. To be honest, I had not been practicing any sport for years! Getting up early every morning was rewarded with a magnificent view overlooking the beach where herds of wild dogs played while the sun came up. I learned how to be more self-conscious trough meditation and yoga. The open atmosphere took me to a place where I suddenly understood why people are passionate about yoga. Clearing the mind while working with the body now has been an essential part of my life. I embraced the feeling of being revived but relaxed. ‘Do as much or as little as you want’ has become my new quote. Trying not to let the obligations of my usual life take control of my self-consciousness.

amsterdam dance event

September 2013 saw the birth of a beautiful new collaboration between Buddha to Buddha and Amsterdam Dance Event. ADE is the biggest international club festival in the world for the whole spectrum of electronic sub-genres with 300 special events and 2,000 DJ’s over five days in 75 clubs and venues around the city. The festival features the very biggest DJ and artist names on the planet, as well as a selection of the best upcoming talent making Amsterdam one of the best and most inspiring clubbing cities in the world. Each year, the ADE attracts 300,000 festival visitors, including 60,000 tourists. Needless to say we were honoured to be a part of such an amazing event!

55.

During the ADE conference days, Buddha to Buddha founder, Batul Loomans also hosted a series of meditation workshops on the rooftop of the grand Felix Meritus building, duped ‘the Sound of Silence’. Bringing visitors of ADE from the frenzy and noise around them to a place of peace and tranquillity within, where they could get a little rest and recuperation from the beatridden chaos of the event. In a place with so much creative stimulation, silence and peace is key.

Both organisations’ creative teams worked together very closely to come up with something fresh and new with unmistakable ADE accents and the fine finishing of the artisan style of Buddha to Buddha: A sturdy vintage looking bag that combines the black and yellow trademark ADE colours with metallic studs and silver coloured logo sign that refers to Buddha to Buddha’s silver jewellery line. Exclusively available to all 1 and 5-Day conference visitors and in limited number of 500 pieces also sold through both the Buddha to Buddha and ADE website and during the ADE.

55.

Furthermore Buddha to Buddha was omnipresent at the event with large paintings from Amsterdam-based graffiti artist Ottograph decorating the conference rooms and hallways and having him also outside during the event customizing ADE backpacks with urban spraypaint logo designs. Lots of people jumped on this opportunity, such as our newly number one DJ as voted by DJ Mag Top 100 Hardwell and the always happy DJ Tommie Sunshine. However and quite deservedly so, our cheeky Mini-Shorty received the most attention of all, driven around the narrow streets of Amsterdam and placed outside the conference buildings. We are sure to see more of that little fellow next year!

OTTOGRAPH artist

Capital of Holland and creative hub Amsterdam is the source of many outspoken and artistic talent. One of them is painter and friend-of-the-brand Ottograph, an eccentric, amiable and visionary powerhouse of creativity. Ottograph began his career studying at the Rietveld art Academy in Amsterdam, but already started doing street art when he was 10 years old. Since then Ottograph has made murals in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Berlin, Antwerp, New York, Tokyo, Maui, Moskou and more! In 2013, he created some very impressive pieces of art in collaboration with Buddha to Buddha, from big, colorful wooden panels at our venue at A Day At The Park to canvas paintings for Amsterdam Dance Event and customizing backpacks with spray paint. Hailing from the same neighborhood as Batul Loomans, the creative synergy between the two definitely added some color to our world. Ottograph's distinct way of using lines and colors gives all his works, well…a clear autograph. For more information, visit his homepage ipainteveryday.com

What is your proudest achievement? Becoming a wife and mother is my proudest achievement. Close would be any custom design engagement ring, wedding band or just a special piece someone had in mind will remain a special memory. When a loving couple comes in and shares with me that they will get married and therefore want to manifest their love with a unique piece, that’s as special as it gets. (And btw, Santa does not have that in his job description ;-) ). The process of designing the rings that they will wear for the rest of their lives can take time and gets more intense with every single step. It’s so special when the wedding day comes and I imagine the moment when the groom or bride puts the ring on her life partners finger. What is the best advice you’ve been given in work or in life in general? Be open to receive, because as you receive you allow yourself to fill up and give back. Be in the flow of life. ALWAYS go the extra mile and give 1000% of yourself, the rest will irresistibly follow. What is your next goal? Together with my husband and son I finally want to visit my home town again, I haven’t made it home in a while. My dad has yet to meet my son and this trip will also give us a chance to visit the village of Koutal. The ASB foundation, which I support with all I can, tries to help the children of Koutal, a forgotten colony of lepers that was installed over 40 years ago, far away from civilization. What jewellery trends do you spot for upcoming season? At Yaf Sparkle, we are all about fun. If you put

on a piece of jewelry and it makes you wanna

your appearance. It ages beautifully and the

that can be worn in so many different ways. As much as Statement pieces are in and out so fast, I see more pieces that are able to come together as statement and decomposed into simpler more delicate day to day styles. More and more stackables, weather bracelets or rings. Jewelry that tells a story. How did you come across Buddha to Buddha and what is your take on the brand? Having managed a National Jewelry Brand based in Sohofor close to 15 years, I had on many occasions received the requests for Bold, with great weight to them, unique pieces of Silver jewelry that did not cost an arm and a leg. Many of our customers somehow got their hands on Buddha to Buddha while traveling or came from countries or cities where it was available and showed me what they meant. I researched the brand and just loved what I saw and the amazing price point! It was like a dream come true! When I opened my own store it was at the forefront of our design to bring BTB to NYC. I just know that there is a great market for it. I love that the brand has a heart and soul, it’s strong, bold, very unique in its exceptional craftmanship 66.

BARRY: MARIA PENDANT BTB.M.R.CH.05 WATCH SASKIA LEATHER BRACELET 66.

Imitation handbags, watches and also jewellery have been around for quite some years now. Buddha to Buddha has recently been added to the long lists of brands that are being copied along the line of Tiffany & co, Cartier and Swarovski. Not only is the jewellery imitated but also the packaging and warranty cards. Buddha to Buddha would like to address this problem so less people will be victimised by these false promises.

Authorised dealers The quality of the fake duplicates is in no way to be compared to the craftsmanship of the original pieces so be warned. We advise you strongly to only buy Buddha to Buddha items from authorised dealers. For a list of all our official points of sale you can check our website: buddhatobuddha.com/shopfinder Real or fake? Buddha to Buddha only sells the highest quality 925 silver with perfect finishing and we do not allow for anything less. Shops, webshops and online marketplaces that offer ‘Buddha to Buddha-like’, Buddha to Buddha Style’ or ‘silver-plated Buddha to Buddha’ are just not selling you the real deal. Buddha to Buddha jewellery is all handmade in Asia. Every piece is crafted by a silversmith. Imitation Buddha to Buddha products are usually developed in China under poor circumstances. The items are made from alpaca with only a silver coating. Therefore they feel heavier, the silver may change colour or even detach from the fake product. Secondhand If you want to buy a secondhand piece online, please do so cautiously. Have a good look at the available pictures from the seller and when in doubt always ask for more. If you only receive pictures that come from the original Buddha to Buddha website, view this as suspicious and same goes for blurry photos. Demand the original purchase receipt or a copy from their point of sales. Your help is greatly appreciated You can help us pinpoint the people in the wrong. If shops in your neighborhood sell copies of our jewellery, with or without the Buddha to Buddha logo or refer to our brand in any way, please inform us. We hope to safeguard the exclusivity of our collection so that you, as our client also reap the benefit of this. In short If an offer or advertisement is too good to be true, then it probably is. Always keep in mind: In case of doubt, DON’T do it. We advise you to buy your items from authorised dealers only. For a list of points of sales, please check our website: buddhatobuddha. com/shopfinder

Launch A new baby is born watches

November 2013 saw the birth of a long-wanted Buddha to Buddha child: our premier watch collection. We were so excited that the Accelerator and Aquatic Explorer watches saw daylight for the first time after 2 years of intense pregnancy, that we wanted the whole world to know. The result: a night to remember during which group meditations, cool sounds, Indonesian dance and sealing friendships were part of the celebration and the 23 different watches as well, of course.
